Abstract:
This paper explores the questions of how economic theory can be used to design and interpret experiments and how experimental results can be used to construct and interpret economic theories. The relationship between economic theory and experiments is modeled and illustrated with examples from both theoretical and experimental work. The emphasis is on combing theory and experiment to the benefit of both.

AbstractAs in other sciences, an economic experiment is an artificial situation created by a researcher for the purpose of answering one or more scientific questions. Experiments of various types are used in economics to understand the causes of poverty and how it might be alleviated. The methods can identify causal relationships between variables and thereby isolate factors that can lead to poverty as well as to document the behavioral consequences of poverty. Experiments can also be used to provide test beds for proposed policies to alleviate poverty. This essay describes a variety of ways i

Abstract:
Experimental economics has been developed in relatively recent years. Thanks to its power to bridge economic theory and observation, the experimental method has become increasingly widespread in the last two decades. As we know, economic theories are devised to explain economic activities and have traditionally been evaluated with statistical data from existing "atural" markets. Although econometricians can deal with the effects of interrelated variables of interest, natural data often fail to have "critical tests" of theoretical propositions and sometimes do not satisfy assumptions in the ec

The rise of behavioural economics has prised loose the abstract constructs of subjective expected utility theory, beliefs and utility functions, bringing them to life as separate, measurable objects. The first of these objects, beliefs, forms the common thread that connects the chapters of this dissertation, binding the pieces into a coherent whole. The central themes explored in the three chapters of this dissertation include belief formation, the measurement of beliefs, and the mapping from beliefs into behaviour. Chapter 1 offers an overview of the three papers. Chapter 2 studies the descri

Human behavior is incredibly complex, but it drives how our society functions. Economists have recently taken greater interest in understanding the decisions that people make, rather than prescribing optimal actions to take. The first two chapters of this dissertation contribute to the field of behavioral economics by using incentivized and unambiguous settings to determine if people base their decisions, in part, on sunk costs. Though standard economic theory would insist that sunk costs do not matter, I find that, at least in small stakes, sunk costs have about 10% the effect on decisions as

There was a time when the conventional wisdom was that, because economics is a science concerned with complex, naturally occuring systems, laboratory experiments had little to offer economists. But experimental economics has now become a well-established tool that plays an important role in helping game theory bridge the gap between the study of ideally rational behavior modeled in theory and the study of actual "real-world" behavior of agents. Although it has older antecedents, experimental economics is a fairly new line of work, having originiated more or less contemporaneously with game the

Behavioral biases often lead to suboptimal decisions, a vulnerability that extends to policymakers who operate under conditions of fatigue, stress, and time constraints and with significant implications for public welfare. While behavioral economics offers strategies like default adjustments to mitigate decision-making costs, deploying these policy interventions is not always feasible. Thus, enhancing the quality of policy decision-making is crucial, and evidence suggests that targeted training can boost job performance among policymakers.
