Kell, Charles. "Constructing Transgression| Criminality in Experimental Literature." Thesis, University of Rhode Island, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13814402.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation examines integral, challenging contemporary poetry and fiction, and its relationship to notions of the criminal in multiple guises. The present focus on “criminal” excavates not only its literal meaning—the nature of crime, and its specific relation to penal law—but also brings to light how the “criminal” affects the construction of fiction and poetry, and the lives of various individuals (speakers) within the chosen texts. Intricately tied with the criminal are practices that transgress, and this study will also locate specific creations where poets and novelists construct transgressions that challenge contemporary ideas of narrative and poetic modes. This study argues that expanding the term “criminal” opens up not only the current field of “criminal studies,” but also examines contemporary poetry and prose. This dissertation argues that a new formulation of the criminal proliferates practices of subjectivities that are forced upon individuals and taken for granted, and that the “criminal” is intricately tied to works that transgress and experiment.

The criminal, at its most basic, involves the nature of crime; it relates to the penal law; guilty; characteristic of a criminal. Most studies of “criminality” fall under the term “prison literature,” which focuses on individuals who have been incarcerated, and subsequently chronicled their lives in writing. Other studies and novels focus specifically on the struggle of individuals in prison. These texts take incarceration as their primary focus. This dissertation looks to make a distinct break between “prison” writing and “criminal” writing, moving the focus from incarceration to other social boundaries; however, “prison” and “criminal” are two terms that often intersect and overlap. “Criminal” writing does not take incarceration as its jumping off point, though incarceration may play a role; instead, the “criminal” is a spatial way of being in the world that either marks one off from contemporary society, or borders on notions which denote one as outsider. This project looks to expand the field from literatures focusing primarily on incarceration to studies depicting acts of transgression and deviance that may not necessarily land an individual behind bars, but mark one as separate from societal norms, as an outsider. This study envisions the “criminal” as branching out from its basic definition to include a variety of ways individuals “transgress” from their present predicament. This includes but is not limited to illegal acts one partakes in but is not caught, and acts that jeopardize one’s place in society. As such, the “criminal” is opaque, nebulous, harder to pin down; it works from the periphery, the margins, interstitial spaces; whereas “prison” writing already denotes the given fact that one is or has been incarcerated, calling to mind a fixed location and trajectory.

Both poetry and fiction illustrate this branching out in similar and disparate ways, and the focus on both showcases the plurality and broad reach of these genres. The central objects of study will be a range of contemporary American poetry and fiction: James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room (1956); Rosmarie Waldrop’s Driven to Abstraction (2010); Joanna Scott’s Arrogance (1990); and C.D. Wright’s One Big Self: An Investigation (2007). These texts give voice to the myriad, opaque notions of the “criminal,” while at the same time blurring the lines of how poetry and prose function; each text, as well, marks off distinct breaks in the artists’ bodies of work. These texts transgress on multiple levels, in turn, mirroring and mimicking the slippery, proliferating term—“criminal.”

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to compare the two architectural techniques REST and GraphQL. This thesis will compare the two techniques and what defines them. A literature study and experimental study are carried out by the researchers. Four applications have been developed that include the ability to disable and to enable caching for both technologies to test the performance effect of caching. Earlier work has not covered the effects on caching related to these two frameworks. The literature study results point to that REST services are up to date and GraphQL is a technique with a shorter history, but that has declared growth in the industry and is a well suited choice for example when bandwidth matters in mobile phone applications. In the experimental study the tests showed slightly better results on average for REST API in terms of total response time (ms). Depending on the intended project there are many factors that need to be evaluated before making a decision on which framework to use.

Abstract:
In its beginnings, the French semiotic theory had as its major concern the issues of the intelligible, when Greimas proposed a generative path of meaning capable to comprise many systems of meaning. In the course of time, though, the analysts were defied by issues related to sensibility and affection, which claimed for a place in theory, through texts in which narrative was not central. Claude Zilberberg, in particular, is one of the authors who defends the primacy of the sensibility over intelligibility through the features of which came to be called tensive semiotics. Following this movement both through theory and literature, this dissertation chooses as its subject an experimental novel, Paulo Leminskis Catatau, almost considered an unintelligible work due to its non-linear narrative patterns. We aim to approach this novel through the tensive semiotics theory, proposing some ways for its reading based on the texts iterant strategies and procedures. As Zilberberg finds in Saussures syllabic model a rhythmic system which can be expanded to all semiotic domains, we can find in a novel like Catatau cells or elements which repeat in certain intervals, creating a rule, an orientation, a rhythm at least. In Catatau, this rhythm seems much more to disorganize than to organize the language. It means that its the rhythmic cell interchange that leads the reader to that effect of unintelligibility. Of course that there are more features that reinforce this effect within the novel, as we show along our work. That means that we see Leminskis novel less as a diluted narrative and more as the offspring of some experience only made possible if built upon some persons sensibility, affected by his/her surroundings. On this specific approach we find our means to make explicit the building of the text meaning, which is considered the semiotic theory main goal.

Bennetts, Alison Chantal. "Experimental investigations of paranoia : a literature review and novel research." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/417890/.

Abstract:
Paranoid experience across the population has been of increasing interest to psychological researchers in recent years. Paranoia is no longer considered a purely psychiatric phenomenon, with numerous studies demonstrating delusional ideation in non-clinical populations. Theoretical models implicate emotions and beliefs as contributory factors in the most severe form of paranoia; persecutory delusions. Chapter one investigates the contribution of experimental studies investigating anxiety and paranoia to the understanding of the theoretical models of paranoid experience. Using a systematic search strategy and narrative synthesis, the review found extensive variance in design and methodology. Whilst there is some evidence of manipulations impacting paranoia and anxiety, the literature is limited by small samples, lack of replication and weak quality ratings. Further sufficiently powered replication studies and employment of mediational and covariate analyses are required to understand the causal relationships between theoretically relevant variables. Chapter two presents an experimental investigation into the effect of mental imagery on variables relevant to models of paranoid experience. Large, significant effect sizes were found, although some analyses were underpowered. These results offer tentative support for the impact of mental imagery on factors theorised to be relevant to the experience of paranoid ideation. Theoretical, research and clinical implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Concerned with developments in contemporary innovative fiction Experimental Forms in Contemporary Fiction locates 'post- Modernist' writing largely within a North American context. William Burroughs, Ronald Sukenick, Donald Barthelme, Ishmael Reed, Robert Coover and Steve Katz are identified as the exemplary post-Modernist figures; their favoured techniques --a combination of cancellation and erasure, fragmentation and discontinuity, game and play--express an indeterminancy of meaning which places post-Modernist writing at some distance from the writing of contemporary figures like Vladimir Nabokov, John Hawkes and John Barth, who, as identifiably 'neo- Modernists', are essentially concerned with extending Modernism's restorative and paralleling features into the contemporary literary discourse. At the same time, post- Modernist fiction bears only a passing resemblence to the work of innovative contemporary British writers like B. S. Johnson, Gabriel Josipovici and J. G. Ballard, who are inclined to impose a series of disruptive forms upon mimetic substance. Uniquely post-Modernist fiction celebrates an eternity of displacement by insisting that unity, coherence and system are totalitarian concepts inimicable to the necessary free- lay of the imagination. Therefore, even as Burroughs et al express long-standing American literary concerns, post- Modernist fiction is demonstrably part of the deconstructive shift away from holistic and humanistic ideas and procedures. Post-Modernist writing, therefore, initiates a crisis within literary criticism, one which needs to be examined against the background of contemporary philosophical, cultural, and social developments.

Abstract:
By exploring previous research, this systematic literature review aims to shed light on the effectiveness of oral corrective feedback practices by teachers to students on oral proficiency with the focus on recasts and prompts. This systematic literature review also intends to shed light on the effectiveness of recasts and prompts compared with each other. This study reports on the results of 13 experimental or quasi-experimental studies that measured the effectiveness of prompts and recasts on language acquisition and the effectiveness of prompts and recasts compared with each other. In those studies, outcome measures such as grammaticality judgement tasks, oral production tasks, and written production tasks were utilized. The target structures of the included studies were different morpho-syntactical and phonological structures. The accounted findings of this study show that recasts are effective at increasing students’ oral proficiency in seven of thirteen studies and not effective in six of 13 studies. The reported results also demonstrate that prompts are effective at improving students’ oral proficiency in eight of ten studies and ineffective in two of ten studies. In eight of ten studies in which the effectiveness of prompts and recasts are compared with each other, prompts are more effective than recasts. However, recasts are more effective than prompts in two of ten studies. The reported findings indicate that the effectiveness of corrective feedback in general on language acquisition is uncertain and that prompts might be effective. In addition, the accounted results suggest that the effectiveness of recasts on improving students’ oral proficiency is doubtful. Moreover, the reported findings of this study also suggest the higher degree of efficacy of prompts over recasts.

Abstract:
This work attempts to read the Brazilian Naturalism as an important fact of this international movement and examines some of aesthetic, thematic and methodological adjustments it has been passed in Brazil. It considers that the model proposed by Emile Zola was adapted in Brazil by authors such as Aluisio Azevedo, Julio Ribeiro and Adolfo Caminha, among others. The novels written by these authors expressed the conservative economic modernization of Brazil in the late 19th century, building characters and plots that have left marks in the Brazilian literature that are deeper than is used to recognize. Novels like O cortiço, A carne e Bom-Crioulo touched on traumatic issues, such as slavery and sexuality of individuals, in a progressively bourgeois society, and meant an expressive modernization in Brazilian letters and mentalities.

Shaw, Drew Campbell. ""X-rays" of self and society : Dambudzo Marechera's avant-gardism and its implications for debates concerning Zimbabwean literature and culture." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/18469.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses Dambudzo Marechera's avant-gardism and its significance in the context of Zimbabwean literature and culture. I use the term avant-garde to describe Marechera's defiance of hegemonies, traditions, and prescriptions for writing, as well as his innovations with form and style. In the context of Zimbabwe, Marechera's avant-gardism involves a rejection of cultural nationalism, and an eschewal of traditional realist criteria for writing. The thesis locates Marechera in a socio-historical context, and in the framework of black Zimbabwean literature (written in English). It discusses his rejection of the nationalist tradition set by his literary predecessors; and it compares him with his contemporaries, Stanley Nyamfukudza and Charles Mungoshi, who also reject the concept of a 'pure', homogeneous, national culture in their writings. Marechera's writing explores new (and often taboo) subject matter, and it thus illustrates the diverse, complex nature of the Zimbabwean experience. It also abandons the unified, linear narrative; and it has been sharply censured by nationalist critics -- largely on the grounds of its transgression of traditional narrative form. Nationalist critics have tended to privilege traditional realist criteria in their discussions of Zimbabwean literature, and Marechera, as an avant-gardist, has been marginalized and denigrated for his non-conformity. In this thesis, I challenge the privileged status of traditional realism, question the prescriptions of nationalist/realist critics, and attempt to demonstrate the value of Marechera's non-realist writing. While many nationalist critics allege that Marechera's writing is 'unAfrican', I argue that it is a fallacy to assume his work is 'Europeanized' while nationalist/realist writing is not. Moreover, I contend that Marechera's avant-gardism is in direct response to a set of extraordinary socio-historical, political and cultural conditions -- which are specific to Zimbabwe. In analyzing Marechera's alternatives to realism (such as expressionism, stream of consciousness, surrealism, grotesque realism, the carnival, magical realism, and Menippean satire), I maintain that his experiments are not without strategy, but that they address pertinent literary, social, political, and cultural issues. The thesis furthermore attempts to show how the 'individualism' -- for which Marechera has been roundly condemned -- is paradoxically transformed into sharp and poignant social commentary. This is particularly evident in two texts which I focus on: "House of Hunger" -- his irreverent pre-independence vivisection of Zimbabwean society; and Mindblast, his much neglected anti-realist post-independence compilation, which I discuss in some detail.

Abstract:
Masters Degree in Applied Science
Much has been written about seated working posture - particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the furniture associated with achieving what is commonly referred to as the "German Square" postural geometry (after Mandal, 1974). The physical sciences aspects of chair, desk and associated furniture ancillary to the task required of the seated worker, have been described in the scientific literature and the standards and guideline publications of the authorities of many countries of the western world. The most important contribution of multi-adjustable furniture to the reduction of postural discomfort and musculo-skeletal complaints is recognised. As a result a variety of standards and guidelines concerning some of these aspects exists in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, United States of America, Germany, Australia and the Scandinavian countries. The International Organisation for Standardisation published document TC136/SC7 in 1978, consolidating such existing standards. Less emphasis has been placed on the interface of the information exchange and the comfort, performance and preferences of the seated worker; ie., the practically, the comfort and the intrinsic safety of the working posture prescribed by the model established by the many standards. Existing specifications and guidelines differ in their orientation towards operator performance and comfort of the operator, in as much as some purport to be "furniture standards", for example C.E.N, Comite European de Normalisation, Paris, 1980, while others purport to be "postural standards", for example, International Organisation for Standardisation document TC 136/SC7 (1978). The standards are uniform in matters of upright trunk and 90° upper and lower limb geometry, but are divided in the lineal dimensions applied to eye height above the floor, shoulder acromion to home row of keys (or pen-grip position of the dominant hand and fingers), and eye distance to copy.

Abstract: This study analyses Ana Hatherly's (Porto, 1929 - Lisbon, 2015) experimental poetry. She is a multifaceted artist who circulates in the fields of literature, the plastic arts, cinema, and literary criticism. This research initially tries to define the concept of experimental poetry and to delimit a corpus to demonstrate that, despite this designation referring to the international literary phenomenon which arose in the second half of the XX Century, it is hard to define experimental poetry with theoretical rigor. This is partly due to the multiple - almost countless - poetics which have been thus labelled (Concrete, Visual, Phonetic, Sound, Kinetic, Digital Poetry, Holopoetry, Biopoetry, E-poetry, etc.) in the last decades. Moreover, conventional criticism misunderstands the methods and experimental processes by subsuming different aesthetic manifestations under the same generalising category. Besides, the indiscriminate use of the term experimental renders it imprecise, which is to blame on critics and also on the poets' hermeticism. Consequently, poetic experimentalism has become an "elastic hypernym", a huge umbrella wielded by critics, fetishised by the logics of the literary market and by its intrinsic unfinishedness which flatly rejects fixed conceptual categorizations. Hence, the premise of this research is that unequivocal affirmations about poetic experimentalism are impossible to make, and it takes into account Hatherly's warning about the contemporary compulsion ...

This research questions how the book can be rethought through technological advances of today, contemplating the mobile device, its own culture and its features. For this matter, it studies both the book and the mobile device as medias for experimentation and artistic creation, following a path that deconstructs them layer by layer: text, paper, devices, infertace and context. Basing on practices that transgressed the limits of these means over time, like concrete poetry that overflows the word, the artist book that deny the codex and the narratives that become interactive, mobile and contextual, this theoretical study meets practice for a reconstruction proposal. From a need for experimentation and lab activities conducted during this course, finally, I, phone project is presented. Inspired by the works of Eduardo Kac and the dialogue between art and technology, this project is a propose to put togheter again the studied medias, in order to set up a new syntax, a hybrid support, the book-machine , rethinking the book for today technologies. As a result, possible paths in the area of paper computing are unfolded. In the end, this research seeks to contribute with fresh eyes and perspectives on books as art and technology, in a way that the creative process not just absorbs the contemporary advances, but also uses them to break their own limits.

Bennion, Karla Esplin. "Client Writing in Individual Therapy: A Review of the Literature." DigitalCommons@USU, 1986. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5600.

Abstract:
Client writing has been used in association with individual therapy for many years, but published research on its effectiveness is sparse. Such research could provide a potential tool for therapists, as well as expand scientific knowledge. This review includes all available reports on the topic of client writing in individual therapy. The studies fall into three general categories: the systematic, "experimental" studies; the anecdotal reports; and the didactic reports. All studies considered show some benefit from the use of client writing in therapy. Writing appears to be beneficial whether initiated by the client or directed by the therapist; beneficial to adolescents and adults of all ages; beneficial to hospitalized patients, clients in individual therapy, and to students in school counseling; beneficial with different forms of writing; beneficial with different types of therapy; and beneficial whether writing is the main focus of therapy or only an adjunctive process. However, the conclusion that client writing is beneficial is largely based on anecdotal reports from therapists who have accidentally stumbled on it. Much more systematic research is needed, beginning with a survey to determine how extensive is its use. Specific recommendations for research are made.

Abstract:
The writing style of a number of authors writing in English was empirically investigated for the purpose of detecting stylistic patterns in relation to advancing age. The aim was to identify the type of stylistic markers among lexical, syntactical, phonemic, entropic, character-based, and content ones that would be most able to discriminate between early, middle, and late works of the selected authors, and the best classification or prediction algorithm most suited for this task. Two pilot studies were initially conducted. The first one concentrated on Christina Georgina Rossetti and Edgar Allan Poe from whom personal letters and poetry were selected as the genres of study, along with a limited selection of variables. Results suggested that authors and genre vary inconsistently. The second pilot study was based on Shakespeare's plays using a wider selection of variables to assess their discriminating power in relation to a past study. It was observed that the selected variables were of satisfactory predictive power, hence judged suitable for the task. Subsequently, four experiments were conducted using the variables tested in the second pilot study and personal correspondence and poetry from two additional authors, Edna St Vincent Millay and William Butler Yeats. Stepwise multiple linear regression and regression trees were selected to deal with the first two prediction experiments, and ordinal logistic regression and artificial neural networks for two classification experiments. The first experiment revealed inconsistency in accuracy of prediction and total number of variables in the final models affected by differences in authorship and genre. The second experiment revealed inconsistencies for the same factors in terms of accuracy only. The third experiment showed total number of variables in the model and error in the final model to be affected in various degrees by authorship, genre, different variable types and order in which the variables had been calculated. The last experiment had all measurements affected by the four factors. Examination of whether differences in method within each task play an important part revealed significant influences of method, authorship, and genre for the prediction problems, whereas all factors including method and various interactions dominated in the classification problems. Given the current data and methods used, as well as the results obtained, generalizable conclusions for the wider author population have been avoided.

Abstract:
Samuel Beckett is often thought of as an experimental writer but little critical attention has been paid to the question of what the term ‘experimental’ means when applied to Beckett’s work (and arguably literature in general). One might suggest that to call Beckett an experimental writer is to identify him as a member of the avant-garde, placing his writing in opposition to more commercially-orientated, ‘mainstream’ works of literature. Alternatively, the term might be taken to highlight Beckett’s formal innovations – his capacity to change conceptions of what literature is and does. This study, though, will specify another way in which we might understand Beckett’s writing to be experimental. Drawing on Beckett’s engagement with experimental and therapeutic psychology, the study suggests that Beckett’s works might be seen as experiments in a more scientific sense. Through readings of his later works for page, stage and screen, the chapters of this study suggest that Beckett’s writing can contribute to our knowledge of psychological concepts such as perception, attention and mental imagery. Beckett’s works, I argue, might be defined as experimental insofar as they position and stimulate human bodies in ways that allow us to better understand our complex, but partial, experiences of the world.

Abstract:
This article elaborates a reading of The Fox from up above and the Fox from down below by Jose Maria Arguedas, from an anthropological perspective, making it dialogue with the genre of experimental ethnography, framed within the positivist paradigm crisis in social sciences. This book aims to describe a complex intercultural context, developing a textual formula with higher powers than the indigenous novel approach or traditional ethnographic realism. While Arguedas has no scientific pretensions, his novel opens and reflects aspects of reality using resources such as collage, myth as historical background and polyphonic perspective through the discourse of social actors within the play. This makes evidence of his training as an ethnologist who is at once literary, enrolling in the phenomenon of blurred genders and the re-figuration of social thought (Geertz 1980). It starts from the novel in its entirety and the accompanying diaries, highlighting certain passages and nourishes of theoretical perspectives relating to ethnography, demonstrating the complexity of the arguedian style, such as theoretical and epistemological questions of anthropology in the second half of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
This practice-led thesis situates the experimental novella Gaudy Bauble within the context of interdisciplinary approaches to experimentation which cross the arts, humanities, literature and sciences. The novella and thesis develop a queer avant-garde poetics and writing methodology that I have called transliteracy. Transliteracy builds on my situated and embodied writing practice as a queer identified novelist and nonnative English speaker. I have mobilised the perceived 'otherness' of English to produce narratively and linguistically experimental prose fictions (Waidner, 2010, 2011). Transliteracy develops this practice by sharing agency (the capacity to influence the narrative) across assemblages of human and nonhuman, fictional and real, material and semiotic 'actors', to use the philosopher of science Bruno Latour's (1987, 1999) term for participants in action and process. Transliteracy has allowed me to subvert normative versions of authorship, intentionality, causality, and process in Gaudy Bauble, and to produce a radically subverted version of a plot that is intelligible and captivating to the reader. Gaudy Bauble inaugurates a genre I have called agential realist fiction, which is original in its genre-bending, gender-bending, interdisciplinary and queer avant-garde orientation. The practice was further shaped according to a generative constraint, which dictated that the most marginal actors on and beyond the page were made relevant for the plot. This conceptual apparatus is also reflected in the novella's narrative as a 'not quite' detective story: Gaudy Bauble stages what happens if previously inconsequential actors are allowed to become effectual, rather than actions located within a conventional protagonist. Enacting an "insurrection of subjugated knowledges" (Foucault, 1980, p. 81) in fiction, Gaudy Bauble stages a landscape of reversed power relations, a locally subverted surface of emergence in fiction, where radically nonnormative phenomena and imaginaries can come into being. The thesis connects transliteracy to a wider political LGBTQI+ project and agenda.

The Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering (SBES) is on its 25th edition in 2011. Throughout its history, several improvements in the field of software engineering have been published and discussed. During the Symposium, the advances and researches gained voice and repercussions in the national academic environment. Understanding how software engineering research published in SBES evolved in this period is the main objective of this work. The other objectives are directly related to the first. To understand the areas of research and the methods used, and build a historical analysis of the research approaches, the unit of analysis and the type of research. This work has quantified the articles published in English, the number of references, and citations of each paper. In order to understand this evolution, it was necessary to use some widespread classifications in literature to evaluate the published works and symposia as a whole. The methodology began by reading the last 24 years of SBES and the consolidation in an extraction form. The method also includes details and examples of the criteria employed to give more quality to the process. Finally, an automated consolidation tool integrated the values found. The results show how each of the criteria described above has evolved over time, research centers which have more space in the context of SBES and also which aspects of the study in software engineering can be improved. Thus, this work assists to understand the Brazilian panorama of software engineering and demonstrates the important role of research for science advance.

Abstract:
Context: Test-Driven development (TDD) is a software development approach where test cases are written before actual development of the code in iterative cycles. TDD has gained attention of many software practitioners during the last decade since it has suggested several benefits in the software development process. However, empirical evidence of its dominance in terms of internal code quality, external code quality and productivity is fairly limited. Objectives: The aim behind conducting this study is to explore what has been achieved so far in the field of Test-driven development. The study reports the benefits and limitation of TDD compared to TLD and the outcome variables in all the reported studies along with their measurement criteria. Additionally, an experiment is conducted to see the impact of Test-driven development (TDD) on internal code quality, external code quality and productivity compared to Test-Last development (TLD). Methods: In this study two research methodologies are used specifically systematic literature review according to Kitchenham guidelines and controlled pilot experiment. In systematic literature review number of article sources are considered and used, including Inspec, Compendex, ACM, IEEE Xplore, Science direct (Elsevier) and ISI web of science. A review protocol is created first to ensure the objectivity and repeatability of the whole process. Second, a controlled experiment is conducted with professional software developers to explore the assumed benefits of Test-Driven development (TDD) compared to Test-Last development (TLD). Results: 9 distinct categories related to Test-driven development (TDD) are found that are investigated and reported in the literature. All the reported experiments revealing very little or no difference in internal code quality, external code quality and productivity in Test-Driven development (TDD) over Test-Last development (TLD). However, results were found contradictory when research methods are taken into account because case studies tend to find more positive results in the favor Test-Driven development (TDD) compared to experiments possibly due to the fact that experiment are mostly conducted in artificially created software development environment and mostly with students as a test subjects. On the other hand, experimental results and statistical analysis show no statistically significant result in the favor TDD compared to TLD. All the values found related to number of acceptance test cases passed (Mann-Whitney U test Exact Sig. 0.185), McCabe’s Cyclomatic complexity (Mann-Whitney U test Exact Sig. 0.063), Branch coverage (Mann-Whitney U test Exact Sig. 0.212), Productivity in terms of number of lines of code per person hours (Independent sample Ttest Sig. 0.686), productivity in terms number of user stories implemented per person hours (Independent sample T-test Sig. 0.835) in experiment are statistically insignificant. However, static code analysis (Independent sample T-test Sig. 0.03) result was found statistically significant but due to the low statistical power of test it was not possible to reject the null hypothesis. The results of the survey revealed that the majority of developers in the experiment prefer TLD over TDD, given the lesser required level of learning curve as well as the minimum effort needed to understand and employ TLD compared to TDD Conclusion: Systematic literature review confirms that the reported benefits of TDD development compared to Test-Last development are very small. However, case studies tend to find more positive results in the favor of Test-Driven development (TDD) compared to Test-Last development (TLD). Similarly, experimental findings are also confirming the fact that TDD has small benefits over TLD. However, given the small effect size there is an indication that (Test-Driven development) TDD endorses less complex code compared to Test-Last development (TLD).

Full text
Abstract:

The dominant theory of PTSD and, subsequently, current gold standard PTSD treatments are based on a model of dysregulated fear. However, a growing body of research suggests that other emotional responses, like shame, are important contributors to PTSD symptom maintenance. The current study sought to forward the trauma literature by using an experimental paradigm to test if trauma survivors, especially those distressed by an interpersonal (vs. non-interpersonal) trauma, experience shame in response to day-to-day experiences of fear. This experimental study used a pre-post between group design in which participants (N = 178) were randomized to receive either a fear or neutral emotion prime with postmanipulation state shame serving as the outcome measure. As predicted, the fear emotion prime interacted with PTSD symptom level to significantly predict postmanipulation state shame. Among participants who reported an interpersonal index trauma and received the fear emotion prime, those with high PTSD symptom levels reported significantly more postmanipulation shame than those with low symptom levels. Interestingly, among participants who reported a non-interpersonal index and received the fear emotion prime, those with high PTSD symptom levels reported significantly less postmanipulation shame than those with low symptom levels. Exploratory analyses did not implicate emotion regulation skill deficits in this relationship. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the relationship of shame to daily experiences of fear in the maintenance of PTSD symptoms, but further exploration into the dynamics of fear, shame, and PTSD represents a priority for the field of traumatology. This is, in part, because shame may impede the treatment and emotional processing of traumas in current gold standard exposure-based treatments.

Abstract:
The study of the new contemporary dramaturgical tendencies is not far from everything political and social which occurs in the western society. The changes produced in this beginning of the millennium due, in large part, to the clash of cultures between the new and the traditional, have led to struggles among all citizens who are linked to the culture world. For this reason, this study shows all these changes through a critical look at society, not just keeping skeptical of all this reality what surround this time, but treating in a extensive and rigorous way the topics that wraps up the new creators. To concretize these new tendencies in a single name and following the exposition throughout the work, the approach to his dramaturgy and the academic essays, Juan Mayorga has studied in his creation a critical and philosophical point of view of the society, as well as a distrust to the words and truths established throughout the tradition. Juan Mayorga has become an attractive author for academics because of his dramatic language and his staging. His work as a playwright and his recent inclusion in the Royal Spanish Academy give him a linguistic and philosophical merit that spreads out all his playwright work. The spectators who attend their theatrical events have to enter into the political-theatrical game that he proposes.

Cox, Ethan Andrew. "Second language perception of accented speech." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282887.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study addresses a core issue in the study of speech perception, the question of how stable phonological representations are accessed from an inherently variable speech signal. In particular, the research investigates the perception of accented English speech by native and non-native listeners. It is known from previous research that foreign-accented speech is harder for native listeners to process than native-accented speech. The reason for this lies in not only qualities of the input (deviation from native production norms, for example) but also in qualities of the listener. Specifically, listeners' speech perception systems are tuned from an early age to pay attention to useful distinctions in the language environment but to attenuate differences which are not useful. This quality of the listeners' speech processing system suggests that in addition to being native speakers of a language or languages, we are also native listeners. However, what is a liability for native listeners (non-native input) may be a benefit for non-native listeners. When the foreign accent is derived from a single language shared between the speaker and the listener, application of native-language processing strategies to the accented input may result in more efficient processing of the input. The experiments in this dissertation address this possibility. In an experiment involving Dutch listeners processing Dutch-accented and American English-accented sentence materials, a reaction time advantage was observed for the mutually-accented materials. Experiments testing the main hypothesis with native Spanish-listening participants showed a different pattern of results. These participants, who had more experience with English overall that the Dutch participants, performed similarly to native-listening controls in displaying faster verification times for native accented materials than mutually-accented materials. These experiments lead to the conclusion that native-like listening, as assessed by the sentence verification paradigm employed in these experiments, can be achieved by non-native listeners. In particular, non-native listeners with little experience processing spoken English benefit from hearing input produced in a matching accent. Non-native listeners with sufficiently more experience processing spoken English, however, perform similar to native listeners, displaying an advantage for native accented input.

Pieterse, Annel. "Language limits : the dissolution of the lyric subject in experimental print and performance poetry." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71855.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, I undertake an extensive overview of a range of language activities that foreground the materiality of language, and that require an active reader oriented towards the text as a producer, rather than a consumer, of meaning. To this end, performance, as a function of both orality and print texts, forms an important focus for my argument. I am particularly interested in the effect that the disruption of language has on the position of the subject in language, especially in terms of the dialogic exchange between local and global subject positions. Poetry is a language activity that requires a particular attention to form and meaning, and that is licensed to activate and exploit the materiality of language. For this reason, I have focused on the work of a selection of North American poets, the Language poets. These poets are primarily concerned with the performative possibilities of language as it appears in print media. I juxtapose these language activities with those of a selection of contemporary South African poets whose work is marked by the influence of oral forms, and reveals telling interplays between media. All these poets are preoccupied with the ways in which the sign might be disrupted. In my discussion of the work of the Language poets, I consider how examples of their print poetics present the reader with language fragments, arranged according to non-syntactic principles. Confronted by the lack of an individuated lyric subject around whom these fragments might cohere, the reader is obliged to make his/her own connections between words, sounds and phrases. Similarly, in the work of the performance poets, I identify several aspects in the poetry that trouble a transparent transmission of expression, and instead require the poetry to be read as an interrogation of the constitution of the subject. Here, the ―I‖ fleetingly occupies multiple, shifting subject positions, and the poetic interplay between media and language tends towards a continuous destabilising of the poetic self. Poets and performers are, to some extent, licensed to experiment with language in ways that render it opaque. Because the language activities of poets and performers are generally accommodated within the order of symbolic or metaphoric language, their experimentation with non-communicative excesses can be understood as part of their framework. However, in situations where ―communicative‖ language is expected, the order of literal or forensic language cannot accommodate seemingly non-communicative excesses that appear to render the text opaque. Ultimately, I am concerned with exploring the manner in which attention to the materiality of language might open up alternative understandings of language, subjectivity and representation in South African public discourse. My conclusion therefore considers the consequences when the issues opened up by the poetry – questions of self and subject, authority and representation – are translated into forensic frameworks and testimonial discourse.

Shaik, Zuleika Bibi. "Anthropology and literature: Humanistic themes in the ethnographic fiction of Hilda Kuper and Edith Turner." University of Western Cape, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/8167.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
This mini-thesis makes an argument for the significance of a female-dominated hidden tradition of experimental ethnographic writing in British social anthropology. It argues that the women anthropologists who experimented with creative forms of ethnography were doubly marginalised: first as women in an androcentric male canon in British social anthropology and American cultural anthropology, and second as creative writers whose work has been consistently undervalued in sombre scholarly circles. The study proposes that Hilda Beemer Kuper (1911-1995) and Edith Turner (1921-2016) should be regarded as significant in a still unexcavated literary tradition or subgenre with Anglo-American anthropology. It showcases the narrative craft of Kuper through a detailed textual analysis of her two most accomplished experimental ethnographies A Witch in My Heart (written in 1954, performed in 1955, and published in siSwati in 1962 and English in London in 1970) and A Bite of Hunger (written in 1958 and published in America in 1965). I highlight Kuper‟s multiple literary techniques in evoking of the fraught position of young Swazi co-wives, modern women and women accused of witchcraft in a patriarchal culture with particular attention to her gifts in creating dramatic plots, complex characters and dialogue rich in vernacular metaphor and proverbs. It then celebrates the even more experimental creative writing of Edith Turner. While Turner has sometimes been acknowledged for her hidden contributions to the co-production of her deeply loved and more famous husband Victor, she has not been given her due as an experimental ethnographer, also placing the experiences of African women centre-stage. In what she overtly advertised as “female literary style”, Turner‟s belatedly published 1987 novel The Spirit and the Drum. A Memoir of Africa is analysed with meticulous attention to the literary techniques by which she seeks to explore an anthropology of experience and empathy. These accomplished but under-acknowledged women creative writers sought to explore what they both explicitly conceived of as gestures of humanist cross-cultural engagement.

Campbell, Sam Nicole. "Blend it Like Beckett: Samuel Beckett and Experimental Contemporary Creative Writing." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3769.

Full text
Abstract:
Samuel Beckett penned novels, short stories, poetry, stage plays, radio plays, and scripts—and he did each in a way that blended genre, challenged the norms of creative writing, and surprised audiences around the globe. His experimental approach to creative writing included the use of absurdism, genre-hybridization, and ergodicism, which led to Beckett fundamentally changing the approach to creative writing. His aesthetics have trickled down through the years and can be seen in contemporary works, including Aimee Bender’s short story collection The Girl in the Flammable Skirt and Mark Z. Danielewski’s novel House of Leaves[1]. By examining these works in comparison to Beckett, this project hopes to illuminate the effects of Beckett’s experimentation in form and genre on contemporary creative writing. [1] The word ‘house’ appears in blue to honor Danielewski’s decision to have the word printed in that color each time it appears in his novel.

Abstract:
Conventional cutting fluids are known for being expensive, polluting and a non-sustainable part of modern manufacturing processes. Global industrial trends are leaning towards environmental and health friendly technologies. Cryogenic cooling is an innovative and sustainable method, capable of replacing conventional oil-based cutting fluids under various conditions. The method has already proved to have a great potential in many different machining setups, performing equally or better than conventional cooling strategies in all criteria concerning machinability. Majority of research work published about cryogenic machining has revolved around turning operations most commonly in combination with steels, nickel-based alloys and titanium-based alloys. Other machining operations, e.g. milling and drilling, are less researched leaving the field with a great amount of unexplored areas. Although the technology has been developing for more than 60 years the general knowledge on the subject among machining specialists is relatively low. The room for improvements is large and further optimization is necessary before more generalization of the technique within the industry. In the first part of this work a comprehensive state-of-the-art literature study is presented, with the main focus on turning, milling and drilling operations. Parallel to the making of the essay, a new search system within published work about cryogenic technology was designed and developed to create a database of knowledge for Sandvik Coromant in future cryogenic research. The second part of the essay covers the experimental work where tests were performed in drilling of metal matrix composite under different cooling strategies. The results revealed an advantage in the favour of CO2 cryogenic cooling concerning precision and surface finish but an obvious need for further optimization of the process was evident as well.

Abstract:
Can words create worlds? My fiction thesis, El mundo es mentira (The World Is a Lie), explores different voices and points of view to examine the ways in which they not only tell stories, but also generate spaces, atmospheres and, ultimately, worlds of their own. Moreover, the book aims to be a meeting ground where these voices dialogue with the voices of the literary tradition, reinterpreting and rewriting it. This collection was conceived as an experimental laboratory as well: it is comprised by short and micro-stories which question and challenge conventional forms of storytelling by incorporating poetic, memoiristic and essayistic devices.

Traub, Courtney Anne. "Romanticising crisis : digital revolution and ecological risk in late postmodern American fiction." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2015. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:adb4eb33-9053-402c-8322-bd55c915077f.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis probes how recent experimental American "crisis fictions" from authors including Mark Z. Danielewski, Kathryn Davis, and Evan Dara reformulate transatlantic Romantic literary debates about technological and environmental change. Arguing that such texts extend previously theorised ties between Romanticism and postmodernism, it identifies enduring ties between late-postmodern accounts of crisis and those of Romantic predecessors. Responding to the upheavals of digital revolution and ecological risks, these texts, published between 1995 and 2012, inventively engage several linchpin constructs in transatlantic Romantic writing: chiefly, the imagined supersession of subjective and temporal boundaries; a sense that the natural and non-human world is of crucial importance; and a reliance on idioms of sublimity to suggest the unrepresentability of the aforementioned crises. Although numerous critics have traced similarities between Romantic and postmodern modes, this thesis considers those resonances as deeper questions of cultural and literary history. It proposes to more carefully historicise the Romantic intellectual heritage in late postmodernism, identifying intermediating moments that inform contemporary accounts of crisis. It unearths how late postmodern technocultural and environmentalist imaginaries were always already Romantic. Deeply informed by countercultural, mid-century American movements and ideas that themselves drew significantly from transatlantic Romanticism, contemporary figurations of upheaval, syncretically figured in mid-century publications such as the Whole Earth Catalog, are indebted to both Romantic and neo-Romantic heritages. This thesis additionally argues that the digital revolution and unprecedented environmental crisis act as pressures on postmodern literary practices from the mid-1990s onward. Digital speeding and a looming sense of ecological risk register as even earlier crises than the terrorist attacks of "9-11", requiring a recalibration of what the postmodern might mean and do. Crucially, in their preoccupation with embodied realities and environments, including natural ones, the contemporary narratives examined here diverge from the assumption that the natural world bears little importance in postmodern fields of representation. Finally, many recent literary experiments figure themselves as materially participating in the technological and medial systems they respond to; formal experimentation is, accordingly, another centre of interest. This research examines how select texts deploy formal strategies to "materially instantiate" Romantic ideas, to borrow Katherine Hayles's term. Although numerous critics have suggested that Romantic discourse permeates digital cultural imaginaries, existing scholarship devotes little attention to how formal experimentation intersects with narrative strategies.
