Abstract:
The kinetics of oxidation of coumarin (see Equation (1)) and four substituted coumarins, viz. 7-methoxycoumarin, 7-ethoxycoumarin, 7-hydroxycoumarin and 7-nitrocoumarin, to the corresponding o-hydroxycinnamic acids by chloramine-B (CAB) have been studied at 298 K. Under comparable experimental conditions, the reaction rate shows a first-order dependence each upon [CAB]o and [coumarin]o, and individually less than unit order dependence on [H+] and [Cl-]. Addition of benzenesulfonamide retards the reaction rate and the dielectric effect is positive. Variation of ionic strength of the medium does

Abstract:
The design of novel antityrosinase agents appears extremely important in medical and industrial sectors because an irregular production of melanin is related to the insurgence of several skin-related disorders (e.g., melanoma) and the browning process of fruits and vegetables. Because melanogenesis also involves a nonenzymatic oxidative process, developing dual antioxidant and antityrosinase agents is advantageous. In this work, we evaluated the antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibition ability of two new bishydroxylated and two new monohydroxylated derivatives of (1E)-2-(1-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)

This review focuses on the ability of some natural antioxidant molecules (i.e., hydroxycinnamic acids, coumarin-3-carboxylic acid, quercetin, luteolin and curcumin) to form Al(III)- and Fe(III)-complexes with the aim of evaluating the coordination properties from a combined experimental and theoretical point of view. Despite the contributions of previous studies on the chemical properties and biological activity of these metal complexes involving such natural antioxidants, further detailed relationships between the structure and properties are still required. In this context, the investigation

Molecular packing patterns are crucial factors determining electron/energy transfer processes that are critical for the optoelectronic properties of organic thin film devices. Herein, the polarization-selective ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) mixed frequency ultrafast spectroscopy is applied to investigate the relative molecular orientations in two organic thin films of 7-(diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (DEAC) and perylene. The signal anisotropy changes caused by intermolecular energy/electron transfers are utilized to calculate the cross angles between the electronic transition dipole m

Abstract:
Esculetin, a bioactive 6,7-dihydroxy derivative of coumarin, possesses pharmacological activities against obesity, diabetes, renal failure, and cardiovascular disorders (CVDs). Platelet activation plays a major role in CVDs. Thus, disrupting platelet activation represents an attractive therapeutic target. We examined the effect of esculetin in human platelet activation and experimental mouse models. At 10–80 μM, esculetin inhibited collagen- and arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation in washed human platelets. However, it had no effects on other agonists such as thrombin and U46619. Esc

Coumarin derivatives have proven beneficial biological activities, but the mechanism of their radical scavenging potency is not fully understood. In this study, the antiradical capacity of two newly synthesized 4,7-dihydroxycoumarin derivatives: (E)-3-(1-((3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)amino)-ethylidene)-2,4-dioxochroman-7-yl acetate (A-3OH) and (E)-3-(1-((4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)amino)ethylidene)-2,4-dioxochroman-7-yl acetate (A-4OH) towards HO• were examined by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT).
