Introduction It is undisputed that the silicon became the material most widely used in electronics in recent decades[1,2]. The qualities of silicon are well known, from its abundance and low cost to its ability to easily combine with oxides, so that the material has become essential in integrated electronic circuits and CMOS technology. A step further, though, is the idea of integrating electronics and photonics on the same silicon-based technology[3]. However, new strategies are needed to overcome the two principal obstacles of a possible bulk Si photonics: the indirect band gap and the band

Abstract:
There is considerable evidence of the need for a semiconductor technology which exceeds the limitations imposed by silicon across a wide spectrum of industrial applications. Wide bandgap semiconductor, such as silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN) and diamond, offer the potential to overcome both the temperature and voltage blocking limitations of Si. SiC is nowadays the most attractive candidate, offering significant potential advantages at both high temperature and high voltage levels whilst benefiting from tractable materials technology. Moreover, SiC is the only that can be thermall

Abstract:
In nature, mineral-forming organisms achieve outstanding control over the assembly and properties of minerals. Understanding interactions during biomolecule-mediated synthesis is key to addressing the challenges that arise when designing new materials and synthesizing superior nanostructures, especially under aqueous conditions. The studies of peptide-mineral interactions presented in this thesis aimed to identify the peptide-surface affinity and its binding mechanism(s) as well as the effect of peptides on mineral formation by in vitro studies. The minerals; crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) and a

Abstract:
The tendency towards cost reduction in the photovoltaic industry has led to the development of the so-called thin film silicon technology. Among the different possible morphologies, a material that presents very promising features is nanocrystalline silicon (nc Si:H), which consists in an aggregate of crystallites with sizes in the order of few tens of nanometers embedded in an amorphous matrix. The deposition technique used at Universitat de Barcelona to grow nc-Si:H solar cells is Hot-Wire Chemical Vapour Deposition (HWCVD), which features several advantages in comparison with Plasma Enhanc

Abstract:
Silicon nanocrystals embedded in silicon nitride have received attention as promising materials for optoelectronic applications. More specifically, band gap engineering of novel materials based on silicon nanocrystals has been proposed for possible application in an all-silicon tandem solar cell within the field of `third generation' photovoltaics. Such an application would require nanocrystals to exhibit quantum confinement whereby the optical and electrical properties of a film could be tuned by controlling the size of these `quantum dots'. This thesis investigates the correlation between th
