Abstract:
The quest to build anthropomorphic machines has led researchers to focus on knowledge and the manipulation thereof. Recently, the expert system was proposed as a solution, working well in small, well understood domains. However these initial attempts highlighted the tedious process associated with building systems to display intelligence, the most notable being the Knowledge Acquisition Bottleneck. Attempts to circumvent this problem have led researchers to propose the use of machine learning databases as a source of knowledge. Attempts to utilise databases as sources of knowledge has led to the development Database-Driven Expert Systems. Furthermore, it has been ascertained that a requisite for intelligent systems is powerful computation. In response to these problems and proposals, a new type of database-driven expert system, Cogitator is proposed. It is shown to circumvent the Knowledge Acquisition Bottleneck and posess many other advantages over both traditional expert systems and connectionist systems, whilst having non-serious disadvantages.

Abstract:
An expert system has been constructed for the purpose of assisting in the design and analysis of direct gain passive solar environments. This system has been constructed for the use of senior undergraduate architecture students in a computer-based design studio. The primary use of the system is in the role of an educational tool which generates design recommendations from user input and predicts some physical characteristics of the environment.The system is applicable to passive solar environments with vertical, south-facing glazing. The system incorporates three models. The first model represents an attached sunspace with no thermal mass storage. The second model represents a direct gain living space. The third model represents a direct gain living space integrated with thermal mass storage. The third model allows the use of floors, ceilings, and walls as mass for thermal storage. Four representative mass materials (concrete, adobe, common brick, and dense concrete masonry) have been included for comparison purposes. Four representative sub-climates are also incorporated into the system: cold / arid, hot / arid, hot / humid, and cool / humid. For educational purposes, the system makes separate calculations for identical structures based on models for inhabited and uninhabited cases.The system incorporates scientific and mathematical relationships as well as rulesof thumb which have demonstrated their applicability to passive solar design. The system performs calculations based on work by Balcomb, et al. [5, 9], and Duffle and Beckman [1], to estimate environmental temperature swings, total solar energy input, and thermal absorption by mass storage elements. The system also utilizes models based upon work by Mazria [4] to recommend glazing areas. Recommended glazing areas are calculated from user input variables such as structure type, site latitude, and floor area.The system's ease of use allows it to be adapted for various classroom goals, and its generalized nature permits the instructor to adapt it easily into different areas of architectural design curricula. The system is written for use with the CLIPS expert system shell.

This thesis implements the expert system technology in broadband network cable plant design to provide an automated design tool for the design engineer. Under this scheme, the knowledge of the cable plant design engineer can be captured and adapted into a manageable form. The various processes of this system include design rule checking, automatically blueprint layout, signal quality analysis and report generator. As we know, the broadband cable plant design shares 50% of the installation budget at the same time, it is a critical issue in the reliability, the extendability, and the manageability of the network system. It is important that the design can be verified before beginning installation. This is the goal of broadband cable plant design expert system tries to address.

Abstract:

Application of artificial intelligence (Al) has been a topic of interest among researchers for the past decade or more. Years of research in the commercial application of Al, availability of hardware support for Al application and affordability of software and hardware has generated a lot of interest in this field and brought this technology within the reach of micro-computer based users. The commercial impact of AI is due to expert systems (ESs). ES technology is a collection of methods and techniques for constructing human-machine systems with specialized problem solving expertise.

This project explores the application of ESs in landscape architecture by developing a prototype ES and testing implications of its use with designers while working on a hypothetical problem in a studio environment. The development process helps identify the typical difficulties of such an application, to uncover technical problems, and to identify areas needing further research.

The project aims at building an ES that provides very limited preliminary data and design guidelines to initialize the design process and keeps track of the most fundamental issues necessary for planning, thus acting as an expert and assistant simultaneously. The idea is to explore the possibility of applying ESs to facilitate the design process so that designers may concentrate on other important aspects of design which include intuitive judgement about qualitative aspects.

Abstract:
This study proposes an Architectural Expert System (AES) to act as a design partner for architectural designers. Architectural designers are faced with a very complex task of searching a solution space, which is a labyrinth of several domains ranging from social to cultural, and from aesthetic to scientific. With the number of domains come a number of experts of that domain. After progressing through tedious analytical procedures involving the physical principles in architecture, and applying the knowledge of experience, the experts are able to convert the raw data into useful design guidelines.

Research in the field of artificial intelligence has developed techniques which can capture such expertise in a computer program, which then emulates the expert. This technology is know as Expert System (ES). This study has used this technology to develop a system to aid architectural design. An AES model is derived from literature review. As the nature of a system based on this model is complex and would require custom built software, an alternative is developed based on the derived model. Based on this alternative, a prototype is developed for energy audit and energy conservation by capturing the expertise of an energy conscious design expert. This prototype module is one component of the sub-system of AES and provides an example for further modules. Various areas such as design, architecture, artificial intelligence and expert systems technology, and energy conscious design and energy conservation converge, and become parts of this study.

A multi-level modular control scheme to realize integrated process monitoring, diagnosis and control for intelligent machining is proposed and implemented. PC-based hardware architecture to manipulate machining process cutting parameters, using a PMAC interface card as well as sensing processes performance parameters through sampling, and processing by means of DSP interface cards is presented. Controller hardware, to interface the PC-based PMAC interface card to a machining process for the direct control of speed, feed and depth of cut, is described. Sensors to directly measure on-line process performance parameters, including cutting forces, cutting sound, tool-workpiece vibration, cutting temperature and spindle current are described. The indirect measurement of performance parameter surface roughness and tool wear monitoring, through the use of NF sensor fusion modeling, is described and verified. An object based software architecture, with corresponding user interfaces (using Microsoft Visual C++ Foundation Classes and implemented C++ classes for sending motion control commands to the PMAC and receiving processed on-line sensor data from the DSP) is explained. The software structure indicates all the components necessary for integrating the monitoring, diagnosis and control scheme. C-based software code executed on the DSP for real-time sampling, filtering and FFT processing of sensor signals, is explained. Making use of experimental data and regression analysis, analytical relationships between cutting parameters (independent) and each of the performance parameters (dependent) are obtained and used to simulate the machining process. A fuzzy relation that contains values determined from statistical data (indicating the strength of connection between the independent and dependent variables) is proposed. The fuzzy relation forms the basis of a diagnostic scheme that is able to intelligently determine which independent variable to change when a machining performance parameter exceeds control limits. The intelligent diagnosis scheme is extensively tested using the machining process simulation.

This thesis implemented a prototype of an expert system shell for support of engineering design activities in the way of logic programming. The development of the system is based on the theoretical framework for knowledge-based system design and the formal modeling concepts. Under the above methodologies, two knowledge representations, production rule system and system entity structure, are incorporated into the knowledge base for figuring design structures. Here the production system scheme is employed for synthesis of design models represented in the system entity structure. The whole system is coded in Turbo Prolog and a specific domain knowledge, namely a local area network, is currently used as a testbed environment.

An information center (IC) is described as an organization designed to help end users help themselves. ICs are expected to provide several services to end users. The services can be summarized as: consultation, distribution and trouble-shooting. The research is focused on a specific consultation activity: software selection. Providing support for selection and evaluation of software for users constitutes 91.5 percent of a typical IC's daily workload. In the last decade, ICs have proved successful in managing software resources for organizations. The initial success of ICs has increased user expectations and demand for the services offered but, because ICs are considered cost centers in most organizations, there is growing pressure for them to accomplish more with fewer resources. The research hypothesis is that the knowledge and methodologies of IC consultants, concerning software selection, as well as relevant institutional policies, can be represented in a knowledge base. A knowledge-based system ICE (Information Center Expert) to assist users with software selection has been developed and evaluated in the study reported here. The development of ICE used two main design criteria: maintainability and transportability. Maintainability was defined as the ability to support frequent updating of the software supported by an IC. This is important because new software tools are introduced in the market at a very rapid rate; to stay competitive an IC must be able continually to adapt to this dynamic environment. Transportability was considered necessary to make ICE usable in many different ICs, each supporting a different set of software. The transportability feature allows different ICs to individualize the system to meet their own site-specific needs. Validation studies were conducted to test the appropriateness of the recommendations made by ICE, using "blind" validation procedures in which scenarios (in case form) were presented to consultants. The cases were selected to represent problems frequently taken to an IC. Two sets of solutions, those offered by consultants and those provided by ICE, were then presented to experts who were asked to judge the appropriateness of each solution to a case without knowing its source. To test the comparative advantages of using ICE or IC consultants to obtain assistance with software selection a laboratory experiment was conducted. A hypothetical construct called "Consultation Effectiveness" was used, which included measures for "user satisfaction" with the process, as well as measures for the "task basis" and the "recommendation basis" for evaluating a consultation session.

Expert system technology has produced systems that perform heuristic classification. These systems solve problems of a type determined by the knowledge engineer and the expert at system design time. A "true consultant" on the contrary, applies domain knowledge to solve a problem not previously seen. For example, a graphic design consultant must accept the statement of almost any problem from a client and turn it into a visual design. This thesis reports the successful construction of the first such true consultant for a well-understood domain: the visual design task of chart construction. The system leads a client in a dialogue to define a problem in the client's terms and then maps the problem representation into a knowledge base for constructing charts. Extensions of the technology reported in this thesis may aid the creation of a new class of expert systems.

Abstract:
The design of reinforced concrete beams involves the selection of design parameters such as beam dimensions and reinforcement details which result in a safe and economical section. This process of design consists of three stages: preliminary design, structural analysis, and detailed design which includes the selection of dimensions, reinforcement, and stirrups. The design process is an iterative one where considerable judgement and experience are required. This is an ideal situation for the application of expert system technology. A knowledge based expert system called BEAMDES was developed for the flexure design of reinforced concrete beams in accordance with ACI 318-83 specifications. The expert system was developed using the micro-computer based expert system shell, Insight 2+. BEAMDES can be used to design both rectangular and tee sections. The beams can be simply supported, cantilevered, or continuous. The results obtained from BEAMDES were tested against several example problems for both supported and continuous beams. It was found that the designs recommended by the system were similar to those of the examples.

Effective resource management requires tools and decision aides to help determine users' needs and appropriate assignment. The goal of this research was to design, implement, and test technological tools that, even in a dynamic environment, effectively support the matching of users and resources. The context of the investigation is the Information Center, the structure used to manage and control the computing resources demanded by end users. The major contributions of the research lie in two areas: (1) the development and use of a knowledge acquisition called Resource Attribute Charts (RAC), which allow for the structured definition of the resources managed by the IC, and (2) the design, implementation, validation, and verification of the transportability of Information Center Expert, a system that supports the activities of the IC personnel. Prototyping, the system development methodology commonly used in software engineering, was used to design the general architecture of the knowledge acquisition tools, the knowledge maintenance tool, and the expert system itself. The knowledge acquisition tools, RAC, were used to build the knowledge base of ICE (Information Center Expert). ICE was installed at two corporate sites, its software recommendations were validated, and its transportability from one location to another was verified experimentally. The viability of a rule-based consultation system as a mechanism for bringing together knowledge about users, problems, and resources for the purpose of effective resource management was demonstrated.

"A Single Function Agent (SiFA) is a software agent, with only one function, one point of view, and one target object on which to act. For example, an agent might be a critic (function) of material (target) from the point of view of cost. This research investigates the possibilities and implications of the SiFA concept, and analyzes the definition language, negotiation language and negotiation strategies of the agents. After defining a domain-independent set of agent types we investigated negotiation, analyzing which pairs/groups of agents have reason to communicate, and what the information passed between them should be, as well as what knowledge was needed to support the negotiation. A library for the CLIPS expert system shell was built, which allows development of SiFA based expert systems from domain independent templates. We will present two such systems, one as implemented for the domain of ceramic component material selection and the other (in development) for simple sailboat design. The effect of negotiation on the design process and the results are discussed, as well as directions for future research into SiFAs."

This report addresses the research applied towards the automation of the engineering design process, in particular the structural design process. The three important stages of the structural design process are: the specifications, preliminary design and the detailed design. An iterative redesign architecture of the structural design process lends itself to automation. The automation of the structural design can improve both the cost and the reliability, and enhance the productivity of the human designers. To the extent that the assumptions involved in the design process are explicitly represented and automatically inforced, the design errors resulting from the violated assumptions can be avoided. Artificial Intelligence (AI) addresses the automation of complex and knowledge-intensive tasks such as the structural design process. It involves the development of the Knowledge Based Expert System (KBES). There are several tools, also known as expert shells, and languages available for the development of knowledge-based expert systems. A general purpose language, called LISP, is very popular among researchers in AI and is used as an environmental tool for the development of the KBES for the structural design process. The resulting system, called Expert-SEISD, is very generic in nature. The Expert-SEISD is composed of the user interface, inference engine, domain specific knowledge and data bases and the knowledge acquisition. The present domain of the Expert-SEISD encompasses the design of structural components such as beams and plates. The knowledge acquisition module is developed to facilitate the incorporation of new capabilities (knowledge or data) for beams, plates and for new structural components. The decision making is an integral part of any design process. A decision-making model suitable for the specifications extraction and the preliminary design phases of the structural design process is proposed and developed based on the theory of fuzzy sets. The methods developed here are evaluated and compared with similar methods available in the literature. The new method, based on the union of fuzzy sets and contrast intensification, was found suitable for the proposed model. It was implemented as a separate module in the Expert-SEISD. A session with the Expert-SEISD is presented to demonstrate its capabilities of beam and plate designs and knowledge acquisition.

Abstract:
A memory based expert system(JANUS) has been designed to interpret facial expression in terms of the signalled emotion. Janus accepts a geometric description of the face obtained from measurements on a digitised full face photograph and returns the appropriate emotion label. An intermediate representation in terms of verbal face actions(eg. . mouth open,eyes closed)is also used. A production rule system converts the geometric description to verbal form, while a dynamic memory interprets the face actions in terms of emotions. Following the work of Schank(1982)and Kolodner (1984),the dynamic memory is structured as a tree of packets, storing, in Janus, typical facial expressions connected by links to atypical but related face expressions previously encountered. This enables new input to be channelled along the appropriate path to an interpretation based on previous experience. The system is capable of learning new emotion labels and associated face actions for use in subsequent interpretations. A prototype system has been developed on a SUN 2/MJN/120 system using POPLOG.V alidation studies suggest that the interpretations offered by Janus are generally consistent with those of human expert.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the applicability of model reference adaptive control to the control of robot manipulators under a wide range of configuration and payload changes, and a comparison of the performance of this technique with that of the non-adaptive schemes. The dynamic equations of robot manipulators are highly nonlinear and are difficult to determine precisely. For these reasons there is an interest in applying adaptive control techniques to robot manipulators. In this work, the detailed performance of three adaptive controllers are studied and compared with that of a non-adaptive controller, namely, the computed torque control scheme. Computer simulation results show that the use of adaptive control improves the performance of the manipulator despite changes in the payload or in the manipulator configuration. Making use of these results, a rule-based controller is developed by dividing a given manipulation task into portions where a particular adaptive control scheme, based on a specific linearized subsystem model, performs best. This strategy of selecting the proper controller during each portion of the overall task yields a performance having the least deviation from the desired trajectory during the entire length of the task.

"In order to succeed in today’s global, competitive market, manufacturing industries need continuous improvements in their multi-disciplinary design processes. These improvements should result in expending fewer resources on the design process while achieving better quality and more environmentally friendly products. The current approach for improving design processes is mostly based on intuitive observations followed by incremental changes to the existing methodologies. However, today’s fast-paced world needs rapid incorporation of new technologies and methods into design methodologies. Recent advances in the application of Artificial Intelligence to design Multi-agent Design Systems in particular-provide an opportunity to accomplish this goal. The inter-disciplinary collaboration between Computer Science and Engineering Design provides the means to develop systematic and holistic approaches for constructing superior design methodologies. An innovative approach has been developed that is based on simulating the design process using a multi-agent system that mimics the behavior of the design team. The multi-agent system implements a knowledge-based model of design in which highly specialized knowledge from expert sources is applied to synthesize a design. The multi-agent system activates the pieces of design knowledge when they become applicable. The use of knowledge by agents is recorded by tracing the steps that the agents have taken during a design project. Many traces are generated by solving a large number of design projects that differ in their requirements. A set of design methodologies is constructed by using inductive learning techniques to generalize the traces generated. These methodologies then can be used to guide design teams through future design projects."

Distributed intelligence systems are starting to gain dominance in the field of large-scale complex systems. These systems are characterized by nonlinear behavior patterns that are only predicted through simulation-based engineering. In addition, the autonomy, intelligence, and reconfiguration capabilities required by certain systems introduce obstacles adding another layer of complexity. However, there exists no standard process for the design of such systems. This research presents a design methodology focusing on distributed control architectures while concurrently considering the systems design process. The methodology has two major components. First, it introduces a hybrid design process, based on the infusion of the control architecture and conceptual system design processes. The second component is the development of control architectures metamodel, placing a distinction between control configuration and control methods. This enables a standard representation of a wide spectrum of control architectures frameworks.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the part of computer science concerned with designing computer systems, that is, systems that exhibit the characteristics we associate with intelligence in human behavior--understanding language, learning, reasoning, solving problems, and so on. Many believe that insights into the nature of the mind can be gained by studying the operation of such programs. The AI concept has formed the basis for developing the computer-assisted creativity techniques called The Computer Consultant (TCC), and The Idea Machine (TIM). TIM has, so far, been applied to topics in the engineering and "hard sciences" fields. In this study these techniques are presented/reviewed in detail and the research concentrated on the expansion/development of a methodology for computer—assisted creativity. This research will help in further evolution of TIM into a richer process for idea generation and general problem solving, and in enhancing the application capabilities. This is done by: (1) expanding the conceptual and ideas data bases from which analogies can be drawn; (2) conducting comprehensive trials with TIM to establish its strengths and limitations; and (3) doing research on techniques for the screening and packaging of ideas techniques. Rural road projects are an important part of rural development programs in the Third World countries. For some years the construction of such road projects, funded in part by international donor agencies, has been a subject of some controversy. Most policy makers in the developing or underdeveloped countries support the practice of expanding the rural dirt (unpaved) roads rather than spending limited resources on maintenance. Some donor agencies are now inclined to only support maintenance-biased road projects. A similar situation arose in Pakistan where the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) proposed to fund a road resources development project in the Sind Province. This real life situation is selected as a basis for developing a road resources management model, and generating ideas using TIM. These ideas are screened and packaged to be used in revising the model for further trials. The application of TIM to this problem from the civil engineering field results in some useful outputs. This study provides a good basis for further enhancing TIM capabilities.

"Design is a very complicated and ill-defined problem solving activity. Routine parametric design is a more restricted and well-defined version of design problems. Even this restricted version requires many different kinds of expert knowledge and the ability to perform a variety of tasks. One approach to solving this restricted version is to use Single Function Agents (SiFAs), each of which can perform a very specialized task, from a single point of view. The ability to represent expertise with different points of view is very important in design. These different points of view usually cause conflicts among agents, and these conflicts need to be resolved in order for the design process to be successful. Therefore, agents need to be capable of detecting and resolving these conflicts. This thesis presents a model of conflicts and negotiations in the SiFA framework. Some extensions to the present state of the SiFA paradigm are introduced. A hierarchy of possible conflicts is proposed and the steps of the negotiation process are discussed. The ability of agents to negotiation in order to resolve conflicts makes SiFA-based design systems more versatile, less brittle, and easier to construct and maintain. Also, the extended SiFA paradigm, where agents have negotiation capabilities leads to many interesting directions for further research. "

Cette thèse est relative au domaine de la conception en génie mécanique et plus particulièrement à l'intégration des connaissances de fabrication dans un système de conception. Ce type d'intégration nécessite la mise en place de modèles de pièce bien différents des modèles CAO traditionnels. Le modèle de description de pièces que nous proposons est base sur deux types d'entités : les peaux, représentatives des surfaces fonctionnelles composant les pièces et les squelettes représentant les flux de matière entre les surfaces fonctionnelles. A partir de la description minimale des pièces mécaniques en peaux et squelette, nous faisons intervenir les connaissances des experts en forge et en usinage tout au long du processus de conception. Notre travail montre que les connaissances de fabrication interviennent très tôt dans le processus de conception. Il démontre aussi que l'intervention simultanée d'experts de différents métiers permet de diminuer les incohérences de conception, de limiter les retours arriére et de simplifier les processus de fabrication. La validation de notre approche est réalisée par une maquette informatique construite à l'aide du générateur smeci et par des exemples de conception

This project focuses on a prototype system architecture which integrates features of an event-driven gate-level simulator and features of the multiple expert system architecture, HEARSAY-II. Combining artificial intelligence and simulation techniques, a knowledge-based simulator was designed and constructed to model non-standard circuit behavior. This non-standard circuit behavior is amplified by advances in integrated circuit technology. Currently available digital circuit simulators can not simulate this behavior. Circuit designer expertise on behavioral phenomena is used in the expert system to guide the base simulator by manipulating its events to achieve the desired behavior.

Resumo: O processo de conformação plástica através da trefilação a frio de barras de aço tem como principal dificuldade o projeto da ferramenta. Ainda hoje, projetistas lançam mão de ábacos e tabelas colecionados ao longo do tempo através dos sucessos e insucessos experimentais. Tais informações, normalmente, ficam restritas às empresas ou aos poucos técnicos, dentro das suas bibliotecas particulares, onde, devido à dificuldade de acesso às informações práticas para projetar ferramentas e processos mais complexos, a fabricação de perfis trefilados tem perdido espaço para outros meios produtivos, por vezes, mais onerosos. Assim, este trabalho compila ábacos e tabelas presentes em projetos de ferramentas para trefilação ¿ seja através das experiências próprias, seja dos resultados herdados de outros técnicos ¿ e também, o escasso material bibliográfico sobre o assunto, organizando um banco de dados para a modelagem de um método que auxilie assertivamente as tarefas do projeto para ferramentas para trefilação a frio de barras de aço, utilizando-se de programas comerciais de computador. Cabe salientar que o sistema não é definitivo, dessa forma, o programa fonte é aberto e detalhado para que seja analisado e melhorado, sendo indicados os pontos de atenção onde devem ser inseridas ou modificadas informações, tornando o acesso amigável para aderência às particularidades do processo onde for aplicado
Abstract: The process of plastic conformation by cold drawing of steel bars has it's main difficulty in the tool design. Even today, designers have abacuses and tables built over time through the successes and failures experimental. Such collections of information, usually, are restricted to companies or few technicians within their private libraries Due to the difficulty of access to practical information to design tools and more complex processes, the manufacture of cold drawn profiles has lost ground to other, sometimes more expensive, productive means. This work compiles abacuses and tables collected in my 30 years in cold drawing tools' design - either through my own experiences, either from inherited results of the private collections of other technicians - and also, the scarce bibliography about the subject, organizing a database for modeling a method that assertively assists the project tasks for cold drawing steel bars tools, using commercial software. The system is not final, thereby the program has open source and detailed for to be analyzed and improved, being indicated the points where must be inserted - or changed - information, making friendly access to the particularities of the production process where it will be applied
