Abstract:
The present scale of labor migration of highly qualified specialists determines the necessity to study the essence and consequences of this social phenomenon. The author offers the sociological interpretation of the concept ‘expat’ and explains its meaning in the empirical study of the adaptation of Russian-speaking expats in the Middle East countries. The relevance of the research in this region is determined, on the one hand, by the attractiveness of the Persian Gulf countries for professional and labor migration, and, on the other hand, by the lack of applied research aimed at considering the peculiarities of adaptation of Russian-speaking specialists and their families to the life in the Arab country. The data were gathered in the survey/interview of specialists and their family members ( n = 50/14) living in the countries of the Middle East. The results indicate that the expats migrate by their own will or by the invitation of the host party through the selection process in English. Expatriates and their families do not experience special difficulties in the adaptation to new living conditions, strive to maintain the traditions of their culture, and actively interact with representatives of the diaspora. In general, expats are satisfied with professional activities, self-realization, and living conditions. However, their family members practically do not work in their specialty though most of them got higher education. The expat family members are mainly employed in the service sector, and their children study in American and English schools and communicate regardless of nationality. Social-cultural adaptation of children is quite successful due to the available conditions - social (parks, playgrounds, beaches) and social-cultural (respectful and friendly attitude).

Abstract:
Background Assignment of expiry date to homeopathic medicines is a subject of important concern to its pharmacists and practitioners. This study compares the regulatory framework for the expiry of homeopathic medicines in four countries: Brazil, Germany, India and the United States. Findings Different or no expiry periods are variously followed. Whereas Germany, with some exceptions, employs a maximum expiry of 5 years for both potencies and finished products, Brazil adopts a 5-year expiry for finished products only, potencies used in manufacture being exempted from an assigned expiry date. In India, all homeopathic medicines except dilutions and back potencies have a maximum of 5 years' shelf-life, including those supplied to consumers. In the United States, homeopathic medicines are exempted from expiry dates. Comments There is neither a rational basis nor scientific evidence for assigning a short (3–5 years) expiry period for homeopathic medicines as followed in some of the countries, particularly in light of the fact that some studies have shown homeopathic medications to be effective even after 25 years. Homeopathic ultra-dilutions seem to contain non-material activity that is maintained over time and, since these exhibit different chemical properties compared to the original starting material, it is quite possible they possess properties of longer activity than conventional medicines. Regulators should acknowledge this feature and differentiate expiry of homeopathic medicinal products from that of conventional drugs.

The expiry dates printed on the merchandise have a distinct background, font, alignment, and color in comparison with the available handwritten digit datasets. In this paper, an expiry date dataset is used, and also a convolutional neural network (CNN) model is proposed to recognize expiry dates out of images. This model may be employed together with our previously proposed smart expiry architecture to get an automated notification to the smartphone for the foods which are expiring soon. The suggested deep learning model is tested and has a classification accuracy of 90%.

Abstract:
Purpose The paper aims to study how global pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer have managed the challenges of pharmaceutical patent expiry. Design/methodology/approach A case study method was applied. The best-selling brand drug over the past 10 years – Lipitor – was chosen as the case target. Findings For dealing with this, this paper describes all the details of the corresponding strategies of Pfizer before and after patent expiration of Lipitor. Before patent expiry, Pfizer undertook the activities of direct-to-consumer marketing, pricing strategy for competition, legal delay and me-too drug R&D. After patent expiry, Pfizer chose to carry out continuous marketing for brand, rebate strategy, authorized generics and change to over-the-counter. In addition, diversity and globalization strategy was applied before and after patent expiry. Research limitations/implications This research provides strong implication for managing pharmaceutical products before and after patent expiry. Practical implications It is strongly recommended for both brand and generic drug companies to design strategies to meet the challenges of pharmaceutical patent expiry. Social implications For the global pharmaceutical market, a conclusion can be drawn that, nowadays, the “patent cliff” is the most significant factor influencing decision-makers to consider futuristic policies. Further, it is also a considerably effective solution for reducing health-care costs for policymakers. Originality/value This paper contributes to the field of patent expiry management in high-tech industries such as pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article offers a new perspective on contemporary ‘whiteness’ in Africa by looking at the ambiguous ways in which it affects everyday life in and around the labour compounds of a multinational timber firm in the Congolese rainforest. As a foreign investment enclave, the logging concession is home to a small isolated community of European expatriate men whose ‘white’ faces evoke a set of ambivalent memories of colonial exploitation in the area. Through a carefully contextualized understanding of how these contemporary expats are perceived in the labour compounds and how they construct their own racialized male selves, this article pushes the discussion on whiteness in Africa beyond the conventional analysis of (post-)settler identities and whites of African nationalities. It argues that, as a permanent fixture in the present neoliberal moment but also as an uncanny repetition of a colonial past, the European loggers construct and embody very specific ‘expat’ masculinities whose internalized dynamics of self-exoticization make them ‘African’ in their own right. Mobilizing the problematic trope of ‘darkness’, both in expat self-making practices and in popular narratives about their presence, this article illustrates how whiteness in Africa comes in many shades.

Abstract:
We consider series solutions for the location of the optimal exercise boundary of an American option close to expiry. By using Monte Carlo methods, we compute the expected value of an option if the holder uses the approximate location given by such a series as his exercise strategy, and compare this value to the actual value of the option. This gives an alternative method to evaluate approximations. We find the series solution for the call performs excellently under this criterion, even for large times, while the asymptotic approximation for the put is very good near to expiry but not so good further from expiry.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a deep learning solution for optical character recognition, specifically tuned to detect expiration dates that are printed on the packaging of food items. This method can be used to reduce food waste, having a significant impact on the design of smart refrigerators and can prove especially useful for persons with vision difficulties, by combining it with a speech synthesis engine. The main problem in designing an efficient solution for expiry date recognition is the lack of a large enough dataset to train deep neural networks. To tackle this issue, we propose to use an additional dataset composed of synthetically generated images. Both the synthetic and real image datasets are detailed in the paper and we show that the proposed method offers a 9.4% accuracy improvement over using real images alone.

Abstract:
Abstract To assess a possible role in tumor progression, the occurrence and type of K- and N-RAS mutations were determined in purified tumor cells, including samples from patients with premalignant monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), multiple myeloma (MM), and extramedullary plasma cell (PC) tumors (ExPCTs). Immunophenotypic aberrant PCs were flow sorted from 20 MGUS, 58 MM, and 13 ExPCT patients. One RAS mutation was identified in 20 MGUS tumors (5%), in contrast to a much higher prevalence of RAS mutations in all stages of MM (about 31%). Further, oncogene analyses showed that RAS mutations are not evenly distributed among different molecular subclasses of MM, with the prevalence being increased in MM-expressing cyclin D1 (P = .015) and decreased in MM with t(4;14) (P = .055). We conclude that RAS mutations often provide a genetic marker if not a causal event in the evolution of MGUS to MM. Surprisingly, RAS mutations were absent in bone marrow tumor cells from all patients with ExPCT, a result significantly different from intramedullary MM (P = .001). From 3 of 6 patients with paired intramedullary and extramedullary PCs and identical immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (IgH) sequences, RAS mutations were identified only in extramedullary PCs, suggesting a role for RAS mutations in the transition from intramedullary to extramedullary tumor. Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to validate Ozdemir and Cizel’s (2007) model of expatriate management. The researchers tested the framework developed initially by Ozdemir and Cizel (2007) by relating the four stages of the expatriation process with the performance and commitment of expatriate managers. Design/methodology/approach The research population consists of expatriate managers from five Anglo-Saxon countries. A total of 110 surveys were collected. However, due to missing data and internal inconsistencies (i.e. random answering), six surveys (5.5%) were deleted resulting in a sample size of 104. Findings Ozdemir and Cizel’s four-stage process model (2007) has been established as a valid, useful model for creating an expatriation management system. Few expats interviewed indicated their selection was systematized or that they received training in advance of the assignment. Families of these expats received even less consideration despite the fact that many expat failures result from family failure to adapt to the new culture. Very few companies managed the repatriation process at all. Given the substantial correlations between components of Ozdemir and Cizel’s model and performance and commitment, these finding are no less than troubling. Originality/value As companies are becoming increasingly international, the number of expatriates working around the world is growing. While the management of expatriates has been studied extensively in North America and Europe, research into the expatriate process in the UAE is still in its infancy. The present study endeavors to begin to fill this research gap.

Abstract:
Introduction:The workplace holds a rapidly deployable, self-sufficient field hospital including a medicine cache valued at $80,000. The cache is rotated through the affiliated hospital pharmacy when they have less than 12 months to their expiry. Rotations are done regularly due to the short expiry dates of stock coming from suppliers. A senior pharmacy technician is employed two days per week at a cost of $13,024.80 per annum to manage this cache.Aim:To demonstrate the associated cost savings of employing a pharmacy technician to manage a medication cache. Methods:Every month, the technician extracts items with less than a year expiry from the stock control system and compares these dates with that of the stock held in the pharmacy. All items with a better expiry date are rotated as long as there is sufficient turnover to ensure use before its expiry. Automatic recording occurs of items rotated, items discarded, and their costs are used as key performance indicators (KPI).Results:Over a 12 month period, $52,803 worth of stock was rotated. On average, 48 lines and 7,619 individual items were rotated monthly with a value of $4,061.83 (range $0-$8,820 per month). During this period, there were 2 months where no rotations occurred due to staff changeover and annual leave. 10 lines of medicines at a value of $4,041 were discarded over this time period. The two main reasons for discarding were that the medicine was not a pharmacy item or was not used in a large enough quantity to allow rotation.Discussion:The equivalent of four times the technician’s wage was saved over 12 months. This illustrates striking cost savings gained by efficient, timely rotations and the cost benefits of employing a technician.

Abstract:
Two dominant images of migrant professionals, also known as “expats”, have long been common, in the social sciences: on the one hand, they were described as super-mobile individuals, who easily move between places with no time frame in mind, with the openness to engage with diversity; on the other hand, more recent studies challenged the idea of “expat” cosmopolitanism, and investigated the boundaries constituted by these people in the course of their everyday life. The present paper brings to the fore the complexity of these individuals’ and their families’ experiences of international mobility from a combined socio-cultural psychological and sociological perspective. We draw on qualitative research conducted in Switzerland in order to reflect on the role of family in the way these people make sense of diversity across time and space, make and un-make symbolic boundaries between themselves and others, and understand their own and their familiars' transformation.

It is also regarded as high quality vanilla. The main concen for Indonesian expoters is to fulill the continuity of the supply for the quality as demanded. This study aims to analyze: (1) the effects of acreage and yields on supply and production of Indonesian vanilla; (2) the exports of Indonesian vanilla to Germany and the U.S.; (3) the domestic pices and export prices of Indonesian vanilla. This study used secondary data, time series rom 1975 to 2000 both national and intenational data. Econometric analyses using 2SLS was used in this study. The results are as follow: (1) the wages have negative effects on the acreage, in the shot run the acreage does not respond to wage changes; however, in the long run it does respond to wage changes; (2) the domestic prices positively affect on the yields, however, yields do not respond to price changes; (3) the previous expots affect on the current exports to Germany and the U.S., it shows that there is a cetain relationship between Indonesian expoters and German and the U.S. importers; (4) the expot pices weakly transmit to farmer level prices, moreover, intenational prices strongly transmit to the expot prices. It is shown by the absence of the effects of the expot pices on the domestic prices. Meanwhile intenational prices highly affects on the export prices; (5) the efforts to develop vanilla industry in Indonesia are concentrated on increasing quality of Indonesian vanilla, the addition of the acreage should consider the expot demand; (6) <br /><br />competitiveness of Indonesian vanilla should be maintained and improved to sustain and gain the market share.<br /><br />Key words : Vanilla, Java vanilla, Indonesia, expot, supply</p>
