This publication introduces a hitherto unknown text by Alexey Remizov, previously not included in bibliographic references. Remizov’s “Explanatory Dictionary,” published under the pseudonym “Vasily Ilmenev” is a review of the first volume of the Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language edited by D.N. Abstract:
The article is devoted to the definition of distinguishing features of encyclopedic and linguistic dictionaries. Using the example of analyzing the definitions of the term physical geography “equator” in explanatory and special dictionaries, as well as in school textbooks on geography, it was revealed that at present there is a tendency to increase the level of eccyclopicity of linguistic explanatory dictionaries.
