Scammacca, Ottone. "Mining risk assessment at the territory scale : development of a tool tested on the example of gold mining in French Guiana." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université de Lorraine, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LORR0281.
Full textMining can be the source and target of opportunities and threats of different natures exceeding the mine-site perimeter, affecting the socio-ecological system where mining is performed and leading to social tensions and entrepreneurial risks for mining companies. Hence, a mining project is a matter of land-planning rather than a simple industrial object. Nevertheless, current mandatory risk and impact assessment methods are often performed on one project at a time, sometimes neglecting the cumulative dimension of risks, the great variability of coexistent mining activities, and the socio-ecological vulnerability in which mining is performed. This thesis proposes an approach to develop and compare, based on the assessment of their risk, different potential scenarios for land-planning strategies in mining territories. This approach is operationalized through the development of a framework via its application on French Guiana gold mining sector. Here, gold mining involves a great variety of forms and techniques in a very sensitive socio-ecological context. Five territorial mining scenarios (TMS) involving different mine-types (e.g. legal artisanal, medium, large scale mining, illegal mining) are developed for the same amount of gold production. For each TMS, two types of risk scenarios are distinguished whether they concern the normal or accidental (e.g. dam failure) functioning of the mining project(s). Risks are assessed through a GIS-based approach that consider the socio-ecological vulnerability of the territory where the mines are located. The TMS are finally weighted, discussed and compared based on a global risk score. Despite the reliability of its results, this thesis provides an original and adaptable approach for the rapid comparison of mining strategies at the territory level, based on risk assessment. Further developments need to be achieved in order to optimize and improve the proposed approach and its application to the selected case-study (e.g. integration of the uncertainty analysis, better probabilistic models, data availability, GIS-automated tools)
Traore, Tiemoko. "Exploitation aurifere et mutations sociales en milieu rural : cas des mines d'or de Morila (commune rurale de Sanso)." Thesis, Tours, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016TOUR2008.
Full textThe interaction between those who define themselves as indigenous and non·indigenous stands out overtly in rural Sanso commune due to the discover and exploitation of a gold mine from 2000. We chose this site because it is considered exemplary both for its high gold production and for its development projects implemented by the mining company. Since its commissioning, Morila gold mine has extracted more than 200 tons of gold and contributed up lo 1,000 billion CFA francs in the national economy (customs duty. dividend taxes,). But if you exceed the posted showcase figures, social complexity, frustrations and daily questioning of the inhabitants of Sanso more than one third of the local population complain about the high cost of life, access to health care problems, drinking water. overstaffing in school classes, upheavals, environmental changes. Installation of non-native (regional, national and international) made numerous changes that affect social relationships such as kinship systems, alliance strategies and the rules of power. Our research has focused on interactions between natives and non-natives. Traditional social attitudes. political or experienced daily movements in favor of the generalization of a unique way of life inspired by other referential. It would. however. be wrong to think that people in the rural community of Sanso passively undergo transformations imported from outside. They involved in changes that affect the area. According to their practices and representations, they orient indeed local transformations, in a way not always expected by the Stale or mining jurisdictions such as deforestation resulting in the: destruction of wildlife habitats and the transformation of the traditional hunting for lucrative purposes. Based on the three priority areas identified by the Malian government and the direction of Morila SA, our analysis thus includes changes to both desired and undesired. which took shape al the option of development of Morita SA mine in the rural town of Sanso. Our problem is summarized in the following question: What are the changes caused by the demographic imbalance between the inhabitants from the commune and those who came to settle there since the operation of the mine? What were the implications of these changes on the socio-economic conditions of the rural commune of Sanso? More specifically, this research analyzes the interactions between indigenous and non· indigenous in a context of modernity. So as to relate as more specifically as possible the changes, document analysis, in-situ observation and interviews arc the three pillars of our methodology
Aubé, David. "Les dynamiques de la résistance écologique : le cas d’une compagnie minière canadienne dans la vallée de Siria au Honduras." Thèse, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/3519.
Full textThis research deals with a phenomenon growing in interest in Latin American studies: natural resources exploitation from foreign companies and the growth of local resistance movements against the implementation of these companies. Going away from the general emphasis put on the birth of these movements, transformations due to the impact of time are instead measured and analyzed. The specific case of Goldcorp Inc. a Canadian mining company exploiting gold in the Siria Valley, Honduras, illustrates perfectly many tactics used by a rural population in an extensive battle and who wishes to resist to a multinational company that have more social, economic and politic power. Therefore, the resistance movement’s dynamics illustrate the changes in its primary form after the arrival of new local and international actors. Identities, build with the beginning of the mining exploitation, are also in play within the groups that are clashing in the region. Moreover, the study of a movement close to the end of its life demonstrate the need to redefine the notion of resistance in order to move away from the purely active form of it and include as well the discursive and moral aspects in its definition.
