Full textBased on a research carried out in the Brazilian mining sector, the text argues for the necessity of a better integration in work systems of the proposals made in order to contribute to prevent health, safety and welfare for employees.Facing with deleterious effects on health in numerous situations, one tempting way of action is to reduce these effects through normative prescriptions. However, such an approach can be ineffective due to its difficulties to take into account the work activities and the issues of production. Prevention then can fail, due to its disconnection with the industrial strategies. The article examines the introduction of a technical solution ("humidification"), whose the purpose was to prevent the emergence and multiplication of pneumoconioses in the mining sector in Brazil. Most of the companies in the field gave up on humidification. However, the research showed that certain companies adopt successfully the humidification techniques. In these companies, a process named “systemic appropriation” appears as being at the core of the success. The central idea is that the introduction of a novelty generates a process during which an individual produces the resources for the effectuation of its own activity (“individual appropriation”), but there is the need of a propagation process within a network of interdependent actors: the other actors of the network must take this change into account at the level of their own activities. Based on this analysis, the text will make proposals to accompany and support such an efficient propagation process within work settings

Full textCoal was known in Vietnam from early on, but it was during the colonial period that it was subjected to systematic exploitation. The French were interested in these mineral resources of Vietnam before the colonial conquest. After the establishment of French protectorate in Tonkin and in Annam in 1883-1884, coal mining grew quickly as a result of influx of capital and introduction of technics from France and became one of principal industrial activities in Tonkin. The colonial authorities strongly supported the “mise en valeur” of colony by French capitalism. Nevertheless, it was not easy even for the biggest French companies to organise a new production activity in a country hardly industrialised. Whereas Hòn Gai colliery succeeded in overcoming financial, commercial and industrial difficulties and to make sizeable profits, most other mining enterprises did never provide enough returns to capital employed and even some of them ended in total failure. In particular, mining companies had great difficulty in recruiting workers and retaining them to mines, working conditions of which were particularly harsh. High mobility characterised workforce of mines and delayed thus formation of class consciousness among mine workers. The general strike of Hòn Gai workers in november 1936 witnessed however emergence of a new social class, whom Vietnamese communist activists sought to make revolutionary vanguard against colonialism and capitalism

Full textSeabed mining is no longer considered as feasible. This dssertation is an attempt to challenge this opinion. In roder to give responses to every objection raised, a multi-disciplinary approach was needed, and a joint-venture agreement was set as a final objective in order to test whether the suggested legal and economic responses were "competitive" when compared to land-based exploitations. This dissertation concludes that a decision must be made repidely, but does not demonstrate that seabed mining will soon begin

Full textControl of mineral ressources is a major stake for seigniorial power which, not only gives it economical wealth, but some status as well. In the Dauphiné, mining of precious metals first began at the end of IXth century or the begenning of Xth century in L'Argentière (Hautes-Alpes, France). It's also with these mines that the Counts of Albon, futur Dauphins, start to appropriate their lands'mineral resources thanks to two similar donations from emperor Frederick I in January and July 1155. Non-precious metal such as iron, although very important in medieval society, are thus mined from an early stage in the Dauphiné mountain, particularly around Allevard (Isère), with the Counts of Albon progressively taking control of these mines. At the same time, the castles implantation, which has multiplied starting around the year One thousand, reflects the gradual takeover of locals lords and contribute to their control of the territory. The castle, beyond its military purpose, is a multifonctional building, particulary since the creation of princely states and the development of their administration. It constitues a true representative of countal authority that can keep a close watch over and protect the territoryut also to administrate it, particularly regarding mining. However, the links between castles and mining facilities are not always visible, and they often depend on the type of mineral deposit (precious or not), the degree of control over the territory or its topography. In Brandes (Oisans, Isère) or L'Argentière, both silver-bearing sites, the castles were respectively abandoned with the end of mining at the beginning of XIVth century, and divided between two vassal families close to Counts of Albon, clearly illustrating the links for the counts between mines and castles. This is however not the case in iron-bearing territories where castles have another use than protecting and supervising mining production. The establishment of a new mining policy by the Dauphins, after the great crisis in the mid XIVth century, disrupted castel fonctions : it no longer has a role in mining exploitation, whether of precious metals or not

Full textThe Central African Republic has been experiencing sociopolitical and military crises for several decades. Those reached their peak in 2013 when clashes between the Séléka, a rebellion in the north and the AntiBalaka, a group of local militias, arose. The state no longer has control over the entire territory which is fragmented and held by armed groups. Presenting the casestudy of West Central African Republic, this thesis shows that armed conflicts have profound implications on people's relations to resources and territories. These conflicts also tend to destroy some economic activities such as cattle farming and artisanal mining. Not only it induces the reorganization of the production areas of pastoral and mining resources, but it also triggers a tendency for a decentralized access to resources via weapons. Such armed control impacts actors, networks and marketing flows. Our works focus on the dynamics of West Central Africa during the period 20132017. They are essentially based on a case study at the scale of the pastoral area of NiemYellewa, which shows how resentments between the dominant groups and power struggles between local leaders and the armed groups looking for resources, aggregate to generate, maintain and perpetuate a local conflict

Full textThe goal of this research is to evaluate the effects of the Meadowbank goldmine on the relationship occurring between the Inuit community of Qamani’tuaq, in Nunavut, and its territory. Territory is the social and historical construction of a space which derives meaning through the everyday experience and the collective memory. The results show the existence of various socioeconomic impacts, both positive and negative, resulting among others from new jobs and from impact on caribou. The construction of a private road and the imposition of rules of usage present a contradiction between two kinds of territoriality. However, the specific Inuit way of being connected to the land continues to be expressed. Most Inuit show their ability to take advantage of the new situation in order to maintain their activities on the land. Also, the specific experiments of workers at the mining camp testify the close link between place, community and history.

Full textThe Gardanne coalmine, is accompanied by an important seismic activity : 50 to 80 microseisms per day, inducing sometime dangerous rockbursts. The microseismic registering that was placed 1977, is aimed at forecasting and prevention. Based on classical seismograms analysis, a methodology is developed with this database. It consists of demonstration of the existence of different types of mechanisms, and their identification. This methodology allows the identification ofshear-fracture, the rupture of rock behind the face and complex mechanisms for with numerical models where necessary. We although observe that events associated with different mechanisms have different spectral analysis. But it was not possible to define simple discrimination types
