Abstract:
This study explores in depth the narratives and experience of recovery from a convenience sample of seven participants with a schizophrenia diagnosis, but now remitted (Andreasen et al, 2005). Three lifeworlds (phases) emerged using hermeneutic phenomenology: (A) Losing existential grounding; (B) Being-within-the-system (i.e. hospitalised); and (C) Outside schizophrenia. Outside has a double meaning as it both emerges from the narratives and also is an important base for existential exploration: what else needs to happen except psychiatry? Each lifeworld had a different meaning and different b

Abstract:
This thesis examines whether residing in a mobile home predicts higher rates of psychological distress. Using combined data from the General Social Survey (1994-2006), I differentiate housing into four distinct categories: mobile homes, conventional homes, apartments, and townhouses. After looking extensively at the history and experience of residing in a mobile home, particularly when viewed through a social stress theory lens, I hypothesize that mobile home residents should have higher levels of psychological distress after socioeconomic variables are controlled. While mobile home residen

This research project explored how mothers experiencing depression after childbirth perceived their mental illness. Illness perceptions were assessed across the dimensions outlined within the Self-Regulatory Model (SRM, Leventhal, Nerenz & Steele, 1984) via the use of the Revised Illness Perceptions Questionnaire (IPQ-R, Moss-Morris, Weinman, Petrie, Horne, Cameron & Buick, 2002). The psychometric properties of the IPQ-R within this clinical sample and relationships between illness perceptions, depression severity and maternal bonding were assessed. Abstract:
The decisions made by Mental Health Professionals (MHPs) are of utmost significance for providing the highest quality care to service users. The assessment of risk is one of the pivotal processes that MHPs undertake frequently, as per government policy guidelines, and in order to safeguard patients and the public. Although Risk Assessment Proformas (RAPs) consume a proportion of MHP time and resources, very little research has been undertaken to address factors that might affect their most optimal utilisation in practice. Previous literature suggests that medical decisions, like decision makin

Previous research has shown low rates of seeking professional help for mental distress in the UK Explanatory Model (EM) theory (Kleinman, 1977) can be used to understand this. The media influences EMs in the general population, while at the same time it is likely that EMs presented in the media reflect those held by the general population. Thematic analysis of 10 UK newspapers was undertaken. Eight types of portrayal of mental distress and help-seeking were distinguished as themes. EMs presented were relatively crude reflections of medical models; except for one theme which used more holistic
