Abstract:
Three successive experiments, of similar design, were carried out during 1986–88 at Mount Derrimut, Australia. Mature Merino ewes were mated to Poll Dorset rams and then allocated to either a control group (C) or a treatment group (R). Ewes from each treatment were slaughtered 60, 70, 100 or 140 days post-conception and the development of their foetuses was compared in terms of body size and muscle characteristics. In Expts 1 and 2, some ewes were allowed to lamb and the progeny in each group were slaughtered after reaching a body weight of 35 kg, for comparison of growth rates, muscle charact

Abstract:
Two experiments examined the effects of different stocking rates in spring, and hence the availability of annual pastures, on changes in liveweight and wool production in Merino wethers (Experiments 1 and 2 respectively: age 5 and 2+-year-old; liveweight 63.8 0.64 (s.e.m.) kg and 43.8 0.34 kg; condition score 3.9% 0.14 and 3.l 0-08). In Experiment 1, stocking rates were 8, 16, 24, 32 and 40 sheep/ha from 8 August, 1989 f9r 122 days; Experiment 2 involved an additional stocking rate of 48 sheep/ha from 23 August, 1990 for 98 days. Crown division, tissue culture, and culm cuttings are methods for propagating purple fountain grass [Pennisetum ×advena Wipff and Veldkamp (formerly known as Pennisetum setaceum Forsk. Our objective was to quantify the impact of propagation daily light integral (PDLI) and root-zone temperature (RZT) on root and culm development of single-internode purple fountain grass culm cuttings. Before insertion into the rooting substrate, cuttings were treated with a basal ro

The aims of the present study were to establish a suitable criterion for estimating the vitamin E requirement for young pigs, and to investigate the influence of dietary fats on the requirement of this nutrient. In Expt 1 weaned pigs were given a semi-purified diet supplemented with 0,20, or 100 mg DL- α-tocopheryl acetate/kg. Pigs in Expt 2 were fed on diets containing 10 g sunflower oil (SO) stripped of vitamin E/kg in diets 1 and 2, 100 g SO/kg in diets 3 and 4, and 100 g tallow/kg in diet 5. Diets 2, 4 and 5 were supplemented with DL-α-tocopheryl acetate at 20 mg/kg for 0·28 d and 50 mg/kg

SummaryWeaned lambs of mean weight 25 kg were offered a diet of mature oaten hay or hay supplemented with a pelleted mixture of oat grain and sunflower meal (2:1), at one of three rates, for 86 days. The effect of the supplement on the voluntary intake of hay was measured during the first 20 days when feed was offered twice daily (Expt 1), after which the effects on ruminal and post-ruminal digestion were investigated under continuous feeding conditions (Expt 2).In Expt 1 the first increment of supplement increased the total intake of organic matter (OM) but increasing the supplement further,

AbstractTo investigate whether oral intake of highly branched α-glucan isomaltodextrin (IMD) could stimulate ileal glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion, we examined (1) the digestibility of IMD, (2) the digestion and absorption rates of IMD, in rat small intestine and (3) portal GLP-1 concentration in rats given IMD. In Expt 1, ileorectostomised rats were given a 3 % IMD diet for 10 d. Separately, a 16-h in vitro digestion of IMD, using porcine pancreatic α-amylase and brush-border membrane vesicles from rat small intestine, was conducted.
