Full textThe purpose of this thesis was to examine the risk of hazardous air pollutantsthat employees at the harbor may be exposed to and assess whether anyexposure limits might be exceeded, and to review if the security measures taken,can be improved. The results of the study show that there is some risk ofexposure for those working in the harbor from both the cargo, diesel exhaustand residues from fumigants in the containers. The operations when the truckdriver is inside the forklift is considered relatively protected from both particlesand gases, but there are other tasks where the worker is not as protected.Measurements of nitrogen dioxide showed that exposure to diesel exhaust forthe employee who opened the containers during the days that the measurementswere performed did not exceed some critical values, but was slightly higherthan for the driver who was sitting in the forklift. Whether the exposure to dust,from the cargo, constitutes a risk for health effects is impossible to determinewithout a thorough risk assessment, where measurements of dust can give anindication of how risky the situation is for the exposed workers.The organization should implement safer practices and implementing measuresthat motivates employees to use existing protective equipment. This applies notonly for exposure to diesel exhaust and dust from loading and unloading ofgoods, but also at the opening the doors on the containers in which residues offumigants, in which some are suspected to be carcinogenic, can remain in thecontainer.Conclusions: Conduct a thorough risk assessment and identify potential health riskswith air pollution. Establish written work instructions where potential hazards exist. Install ventilation in the warehouses, which is controlled by the levels ofnitrogen dioxide, to ensure that high levels of diesel exhaust does notoccur. Need to increase motivation for safety and the use of protectiveequipment. Implement procedures to comply with the legislation for the managementof dust and gases that applies to carcinogens substances.

Full textPresentation and aim: Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are used in many materials and products. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are the most well known and because of their structures, similar to that of PCB, they have been proposed to possibly affect health and environment. Occupational exposure has been an issue for years and this study investigated BRF in aircraft maintenance. The aim of this study was to assess the presence and levels of BRFs in dust, air and blood (serum) and compare the results with different references. Method: Dust and air were sampled in different phases of the work with the aircraft and analysis of a spectrum of BFR was performed. In addition, serum from employees was sampled and analyzed for the presence of PBDEs. Result: PBDEs and other BFRs were found in dust and air samples at high concentrations. Serum concentrations in the technicians were slightly higher to those observed in the general Swedish population and in the same magnitude as some highly exposed occupational references. Years of work, age or time spent in the aircraft before giving blood seems not to have an impact on the level of BFRs in serum. Conclusion: This study shows high concentrations of BFR in dust and air in the aircraft and the concentrations of PBDEs in serum were high compared to most reference groups. To minimize the risk for exposure, it is important to focus on industrial hygiene improvements to minimize the amount of dust in working areas. The personal hygiene and use of personal safety equipment can also be improved and the routines should be described and included in the appropriate documentation regarding work environment.

Full textDetta examensarbete undersöker hur man kan förbättra exponeringen av produkter inom detaljhandeln för kläder och presentartiklar. Syftet är att utreda och testa hur ljuskällor och olika ljusriktningar påverkar hur produkter upplevs avseende exponering. Frågeställningarna är: I vilken utsträckning påverkar ljusnivån i kombination med bakgrunden på butiksinredningen om en produkt upplevs mer eller mindre attraktiv? Vad kan vi rekommendera för att göra exponeringen av produkter mer attraktiva? I dagsläget har butikerna utifrån våra iakttagelser relativt höga ljusnivåer när man exponerar produkter på vertikala ytor. Vi har tittat på energimyndighetens rekommendation för att se vad de anser är viktigt när man skall utforma en butiksbelysning. Denna rekommendation behandlar enbart livsmedelsbutiker och det finns inga rekommendationer för detaljhandeln när det gäller exponering. De metoder vi använt i arbetet är intervju, experiment och ljusmätningar. Intervjuerna gjorde vi med butikspersonal från sju olika butiker i Jönköpings centrum. Detta gjorde vi för att bilda oss en uppfattning om hur butiker arbetar med belysning och butikskoncept. I vårt experiment byggde vi upp fem olika testmiljöer med fyra likadana objekt i varje miljö men med olika ljussättningar. Där fick våra informanter utvärdera hur de olika objekten upplevdes genom att de fick skatta sina upplevelser i en enkät. Här testade vi hur ljus från olika ljuskällor fungerar ihop med olika bakgrunder och objekt. De objekt som användes i experimentet var glas, metall, betong och textil. Ljusmätningarna använde vi för att se samband mellan de uppmätta värdena och om de stämde överens med resultatet från experimentet. Utifrån våra resultat kan vi se att metallhalogen har förmågan att lyfta fram textil samt att den bidrar till att skapa fräscha och ljusa intryck av produkter. Halogen bidrar till att skapa lugnare och ett mer lågmält intryck i en butiksmiljö. Med mörka bakgrunder får man fram tydliga kontraster till ljusa och färgstarka föremål. Vitare bakgrunder återkastar ljuset bättre vilket gör att man skapar liv i glas och metallföremål i kombination med metallhalogen. Vi kan dra slutsatsen att ljusnivån inte påverkar hur attraktiva produkter upplevs utan att detta beror på ljusriktning, färgtemperatur, effekt och ljuskällans färgåtergivningsförmåga i kombination med olika bakgrunder.

Full textAbstract To know how you can affect and attract the customers with the help of exposure can be of great meaning for the stores and store managers. With a constantly growing competition in all businesses, the struggle of every single customer gets more evident. So the need appears for the stores to know in which way they can communicate with their customers to get the response that they strive after which is to create a purchase with the help of store communication. The stores can reach several purposes with its communication towards customers. Amongst these is to get new customers, to increase the purchases of the already existing customers etc. Because of these reasons the focus in this essay has been to examine how the stores use special exposure as a part of the communication the store has with the customers and also whether the customers are affected and attracted by special exposure in stores. To gather empirical data for the essay an interview with a decorator that works in a bigger clothes chain has been used. An interview with a focus group where the people were between 19-49 years old both females and males has also been used to be able to among other things look at the effect of special exposure on the customers. The essay shows that special exposure is actively used by the store in their try to communicate with the customers with the help of their assortment. To know what it is that attracts and affects the customers is however more difficult to demonstrate because there are so many different elements like for an example gender, age etc. that can effect if one person regards a certain special exposure as attractive and inspiring or not. The people that were interviewed in the focus group were affected by commercial in the media and also recommendations from family and friends when they wanted to make the decision for which store they want to shop at. However you cannot show by the help of this examination if special exposure being observed is leading to purchasing or not. A further examination would be necessary to with a greater assurance be able to demonstrate the results of special exposure plus to try to resolve what the elements are that determines for the customer if the exposure is perceived as attractive and inspiring.

Full textLarge retail chains use visual merchandising to create their windows displays. They based their studies on research and conceptual literature that establish the rules and guidelines for how a storefront should be designed in an attractive and effective way to attract attention and convey the store's image. This report examines the importance and use of this type of literature and theories of the smaller privately owned stores. The guidelines for this report are based on the question: In what way is the design of the windows display regarding smaller stores different from the theory? The repeating pattern of the authors of the literature is about color, light, clustering, minds, and shop window primary attributes. These theories are focusing on creating a well structured and well planned exposure for contributing to store profitability in the best way. From the scientific and relevant literature has the material to the interviews being created. The interviews were conducted with selected respondents for the subject, four in number, which participated on a voluntary basis. The result shows that there are many differences between theory and practice of the smaller stores. The smaller stores use their own taste and liking, and find their inspiration from sources other than the used literature. In addition to the differences between theory and practice is the report aiming to find the characteristics of smaller stores designing windows compared with retail chains. Knowledge and awareness is a relevant question regarding the staff and shopowner to the smaller stores, which this repport also is aiming to investigate.

Full textThe crew's working as a mariner means many different tasks and challenges but few think about the effects of the indoor environment on the human health. Now when the new SECA regulations are in force vessels has been forced to convert to new low- sulphur fuel and this can lead to a positive change in the vessels indoor environment. Exposure and levels of air pollutants in indoor environment have been studied onboard the icebreaker Oden. Investigations were performed once during the vessel’s operation on heavy fuel oil (HFO) and once with marine diesel (MD) as fuel. Concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including benzene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were measured with personal and stationary diffusive samplers. The crew's perception of air quality was studied by a questionnaire survey with regard to the general acceptability of air quality, odor, and air characteristics such as fresh, clean, dry or moldy, and thermal comfort. The general acceptance of the air quality was very high; 0.8 and 0.9 in the workplaces and in cabins, respectively, on a scale from -1 to 1. The decrease in personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide and benzene was statistically significant. Difference between the concentrations of volatile organic compounds was not statistically significant. The indoor air quality has improved in several aspects after the fuel conversion. The results from the questionnaires show that the crew was overall satisfied with their indoor environment. The results of the measurements show a decrease of substances after the conversion.

Full textMarknaden för fysiska butiker står inför utmaningar då många istället väljer att handla online. I och med denna konkurrens har det blivit viktigare för fysiska butiker att sticka ut, särskilt genom butikskommunikation som innebär butikernas visuella kommunikation mot kunderna. Butikskommunikation beskrivs som något som rör reklamåtgärder som skyltfönster, ljud, ljus, produktexponeringar och färgscheman som butiker anammar för att kommunicera sina produkter. Butikskommunikation har visat sig ha stor inverkan på människors uppfattning om en butik. Det kan ifrågasättas om effekterna av butikskommunikationen på människor skiljer sig beroende på om exponeringen gäller kläder för vuxna eller barn. I och med att Hbtq1 personer får ta mer plats i samhället tenderar gränserna för könsnormer att bli suddiga, men trots detta verkar klädföretag fortfarande dela upp kläderna mellan könen. Syftet med uppsatsen har därför varit att undersöka hur ett butikskoncept för barnkläder kan utöka konceptets mervärde med hjälp av könsneutral butiksexponering. Detta uppnåddes genom en exprementiel kvalitativ metod som genomfördes genom intervjuer och observationer med föräldrar till barn mellan åldrarna 0-7. Två teoretiska modeller användes; SOR-modellen som användes för att förstå kundernas handlingar i butikerna och kommunikationsmodellen som användes för att förklara hur butiker kommunicerar sitt budskap till sin målgrupp. Studien visade att den största svårigheten i den könsneutrala frågan ligger i att förbättra samhällets acceptans av det. Det är omvärldens motreaktioner till barnens kläder när de avviker från det stereotypa som orsakar föräldrars avstånd från en fullständig acceptans av ett könsneutralt tänkande.

Full textExamensarbetet är en del i ett större projekt, ORTO - Optimerad Resurseffektiv Tillverkning av Ortoser. Vid tillverkning av ortopedtekniska hjälpmedel används idag många olika metoder för att tillverka individanpassade produkter. Processer, metoder och material kan variera beroende på vilken slutprodukt det är som ska tillverkas. Det finns ingen fullständig kunskap om hur detta påverkar personalen som tillverkar hjälpmedlen och användare på lång sikt ur ett hälsomässigt perspektiv. Syftet med arbetet var att kartlägga tillverkningsprocesserna för ledade och oledade gjutna ankel-fot-ortoser som är gjorda framförallt av kolfiberkompositmaterial, för att identifiera exponeringen av farliga material och ämnen som kan leda till eventuella hälsoproblem. För att besvara frågeställningarna har teori om processkartläggning samlats in och observationer i form av videoinspelningar och intervjuer har utförts på Borås Ortopedteknik för att kartlägga nuläget. Processkartläggningen syfte var också att identifiera potentiella emissionskällor där exponering för farligt material förekom. Teori och forskning om dessa material har samlats in om dess potentiella hälsopåverkan. Exponeringstiderna vid emissionskällorna har sammanställts genom videoinspelningarna, där det i nuläget bedömdes finnas fyra stycken emissionskällor i form av torra kolfiberband, gjutning med polymetylmetakrylat, slipning och limning. Exponeringstiderna och emissionskällorna har analyserats och jämförts med teori och forskning för att granska om det var någon hälsorisk. Diskussionen har framförallt handlat om hur bearbetningen av farliga material kan komma att påverka personalen som tillverkar hjälpmedlen hälsomässigt och hur exponeringstiderna kan reduceras. Slutsatsen är att vissa emissionskällor löper större risk att påverka personalen negativt och åtgärder i form av nya arbetssätt och metoder eller ombyggnationer kan vara av värde att analysera vidare. Även förebyggande åtgärder som att följa föreskrifter skulle vara aktuellt för att minska exponeringen av farliga material. Praktiska förslag ges på vad som skulle kunna förändras. Exempel på detta kan vara att installera en spegellösning i dragskåpet vid gjutningen eller att se över rutiner och arbetssätt vid slipningen och att följa föreskrifterna från arbetsmiljöverket.

Full textThe shop window is an opportunity for companies like Telia to promote their message, products and services. A previous study has shown that only a small number of consumers actually notice the window in the Telia store in Karlstad. The question is how Telia and other companies can communicate in the shop window in a more efficient way. We observed our respondents in a lab environment where we let them look at different variations of Telia's shop window. The aim was to find out the impact of using faces in this type of marketing communication and if actual placement of images and texts are significant.The practical purpose was to see what was first identified in the shop window and what respondents could recall from what they were exposed to. The theory in this paper will form the basis to explain the psychological aspects that come into play when we receive information from texts and pictures, but also when we look at faces.Our investigation is partly based on previous studies on the left and right brain, and the role they play when we receive information. In order to conduct the investigation, we used eye-tracking devices supplemented with questionnaires. The survey shows that the use of faces in marketing is something that draws a lot of attention to itself. We also found a significant difference in how respondents drew attention to the left and right side of the shop window.

Full textTo stand out on the market and from the competitors it’s important to know how to work effective by presenting and alert the customer on the range. When working with exposure it’s good to think about how the store in a good way can use the range, area, design factors and exposure techniques. The range can sell itself if the store has a visually attractive merchandising. The report is intended to determine how exposure in store can make costumers aware of the range when working with the area, design factors and exposure techniques. The study is a qualitative study with an individual interview and two observations. The interview is with a visual merchandiser and the observations are with a large store and a small store. All units belong to the clothing industry. It has also been 15 interviews with costumers about what they noticed in the visual merchandiser’s store. The visual merchandiser work in a chain business and the observed stores belong to both a chain business and a single store. This is to get useful knowledge and deeper understanding of the practical work of a decorator and see how the two stores of various sizes work in the visible environment and to see what the costumers get aware of. The results show that exposure is something all the stores work with effective and it’s hard to see only one right way. The most similarity was between the two chains, which clearly showed a red thread of the visual and "silent" communication. Similarities of all the stores were that they had white and black as base colors, used special exposure, they had a podium and used a shopwindow. The results of interviews with consumers revealed that many consumers have already decided to visit the store before they are outside the store. The shopwindow was an area that all but one noticed, but it was only a third part that said that it was the determining factor to the visit. Many noticed the podium first at the entrance which is one of the a-sites. The inspiration and possible purchases were from different eye-catcher in the store, that different from other interior elements. The signs that the costumers noticed was mainly those who are perceptually attractive, there was no one who had communicated with the staff beyond any purchase at pay desk.

Full textAbstractChronic pain causes great suffering for the individual and burden society economically. The aim of this study was to examine whether an exposure in vivo treatment inspired by Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for people with chronic low back pain was feasible and whether the treatment had effect on pain-related problems. The design was a single case experimental design, which is a widely used design to test new therapy methods. The study consisted of six participants, all with high levels of pain catastrophizing, something that in the literature been linked to poor treatment outcomes. The treatment was inspired by DBT and divided into three phases: an initial validation phase, a second phase for skills training and a third exposure phase. The results were promising: five out of six participants had improved in all primary outcome measures. Three out of six participants had improvements in all primary and secondary outcome measures. Future replications are warranted.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine the impact that idealised body images found in media have on the body-image and wellbeing of young men and women. The study was carried out using questionnaires based on the BAQ and HAD scales to examine the participants' views of themselves as well as symptoms of anxiety and depression. Time spent by the participants using different kinds of media, as well as their degree of social support, was used with the purpose of examining relations and differences in body-image between men and women. The questionnaire contained advertising images to examine whether short time exposure had any impact on the participants. In order to determine this, one half of the questionnaires contained idealised body-images, whilst the other half contained images without human objects. The results showed a clear difference between men and women. Women had a more negative body-image than that of men. There was also a clear relation between the level of anxiety and depression symptoms to be found. Participants with higher levels of depression and anxiety often had a more negative body-image. In the case the relation between of short time exposure and body-image, no significant relations were found, which indicates that the participants\2019 body-image and levels of anxiety and depression thus seem to be similar both before and after the study was conducted.

Full textAbstract The purpose of this master thesis was to investigate the occupational health effects concerning nanoparticles of colloidal silica at a Swedish company that conducts chemical production. The study was performed at a company that manufactures a product, Product A, whose raw material, Raw material B, contains the concerned nanoparticles. The goal was to reduce health risks and to promote a good working environment. Methods used included literature studies, studies of safety data sheets, assessment of earlier measurements taken by the company, interviews and observations as well as a risk assessment method and tool. A research study about the potential health concerns regarding nanoparticles of colloidal silica indicated a cytotoxic effect on tested human alveolar epithelial cells. Although these were the findings of this study, it was also noted that too little data was present in order to be able to make any conclusions on effects of human exposure. One study showed that it was possible for nanoparticles to penetrate the skin. Other studies did not indicate adverse effects. In summary, there is too small an amount of data and knowledge gaps exist around health the effects. Therefore it is reasonable to apply the precautionary principle. Interviews with the workers and observations of the operations showed that the manufacturing process to a large extent was a closed process and that the workers’ exposure of nanoparticles mostly occurred when; transferring the product to transportation containers, cleaning, changing of filters and sampling of the product. A risk assessment of the working environment in the production of Product A was performed. Due to previous precautionary measures taken by the company it was not likely that any larger exposure was present. A number of additional measures were developed and prioritized in order to further reduce the workers’ exposure risks and promote a good working environment. The most important measure was to reduce the spillage of concentrated Product A and dilute Raw material B. Several of the measures were non-costly and quick to implement.

Full textPurpose – The increasing usage of Internet has led to a variety of guidelines on how to utilise and assess the human factor in the best way for internet usage, however, disregarding research in the field. Furthermore, graphic profiles have in a way been cemented in a pre- internet world, which has led to a situation where many organisations have missed the opportunity to attract a lot of target groups, by raising the graphic profile and building mutually advantageous and interactive relations. With this as a background, the aim of this study is to elevate the awareness of how graphic profiling may emit humanity in a digital world. Therefore, the purpose of this study is: To increase the knowledge about how graphic profiles can radiate humanity in the digital world. In order to find the purpose of this study, the purpose has been broken down to a research question that goes: How are human emotions portrayed in graphic profiles exposed in the digital world? Method – To be able to answer this question three methods have been used, namely a review of relevant literature in the field, a survey and group interviews in the form of focus groups. The methods used include quantitative as well as qualitative data as well as primary and secondary studies. The literature review aimed at collecting facts in the field to serve the research undertaken to this date. The survey comprised of a comparison of fonts to be able to identify the emotions these fonts emitted. The interviews with the focus groups were a way of investigating the different participants emotions faced with five different graphic profiles and the elements they contained. Findings – The empirical data and the literature review resulted in a variety of data describing human reactions and emotions towards graphic profiles. These data was then used to prepare a model that comprised concrete information when trying to incorporate a human emotion within a graphic profile. This model include aspects and guidelines for photography, icons, colours, typography and tone of voice on how to interact with people in a better way in this new digital world. For example, photographs should be simple, dynamic and rich in contrasts where existing light is desirable. The results of this study are considered being useful for advertising agencies in their work with digital graphic profiles that covet a human touch. The results are hopefully also useful for digitalizing brands generally, where a human touch is desirable. Limitations – Within the focus groups there was a notable difficulty in creating discussions regarding perceived emotions for each of the elements, which resulted in a discussion upon the graphic profiles generally. Furthermore, the focus groups could only meet once and discuss, due to lack of time. Hence, impact from the interviewer and the context of situation may have influenced the results. Since colours – as anthropology has shown – are perceived in different ways in different cultures, this study is confined to a Swedish perspective.

Full textThe main purpose of this study was to measure and evaluate the air quality onboard two Swedish ships, and compare the results with the exposure limits laid out by the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) and the Swedish population’s exposure to various substances. The results of this study were also meant to be helpful to form new advice and recommendations to minimize exposure and also to provide material for future studies. During approximately one week onboard the two ships data were collected using passive samplers to register levels of benzene, nitrogen dioxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The results indicated that the air quality onboard the two ships were generally good. All measured concentrations were well below safety applications and it did not differ very much neither between ships nor compared with the Swedish population’s exposure. In conclusion, Swedish sailors onboard Swedish ships are not in greater danger of toxic air pollutants onboard compared to when they are at home.
