In this paper, the method of generalized quasilinearization has been extended to reaction diffusion equations. The extension includes earlier known results as special cases. The earlier results developed are when (i) the right-hand side function is the sum of a convex and concave function, and (ii) the right-hand function can be made convex by adding a convex function. In our present result, if the monotone iterates are mildly nonlinear, we establish the quadratic convergence as in the quasilinearization method. By considering John Cage's re-phrasing of 'responsibility' as 'response-ability', and thus foregrounding political engagement as requiring aesthetic capabilities and sensibilities, alongside Victor Burgin's extended explorations of the specificities of both making and viewing an artwork, the introduction undertakes two key functions. Firstly, it sets out the context for the book, which concerns Burgin's sustained reading of Barthes, begun in the 1960s, and how we understand images/imaging/Image. Secondly, in dialogue with this context, the chapter establishes the key operative themes and terms operative in the book as a whole. In attempting to set out its theoretical underpinning, the chapter ranges over issues of the political aesthetic, spatial/temporal ethics, the generative capacities of visualisation technologies, and contemporary spectatorship, particularly in relation to contemporary art.

According to the World Health Organization, sexual health as a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in the context of sexuality, excludes the mere absence of disease, dysfunction, or infirmity. Thus a woman’s sexual function encompasses many areas; the construct of a normal function as a quality of life indicator often but not always conforms to the sexual response cycle, which is an endogenous process contributed by hormonal, vascular, neuronal, and psycho-emotional factors. Clinical and scientific evidence abounds about the physiological role of sex steroids viz. oestrogen, testosterone, and also progesterone in facilitating and maintaining the woman’s sexual parameters. The neurophysiology extends from the central and peripheral nervous systems to the targeted genital structures resulting in coordinated vascular and non-vascular smooth muscle relaxation, to be accompanied by pelvic vasocongestion, vaginal lubrication, and labial and clitoral engorgement. Any detrimental impact on this normal cycle of concerted responses can result in a functional impairment or ‘female sexual dysfunction’ (FSD). Sexual changes, psychogenic or organic, are common in women at any age; such complaints are frequently accompanied by quality-of-life concerns, varying levels of personal distress, anxiety, depression, and also fertility concerns in younger women. With FSD as a medically diagnosable entity, fewer drugs have met the safety and efficacy criteria for global approval and clinical utility. In order to appreciate the diverse range of FSD and the extent of its physical, physiological, and psychological implications, it is important to understand the fundamentals as well as the changing paradigms in a woman’s sexual functioning.

This chapter analyzes how Yemeni American women’s everyday space-making practices in Hamtramck blur the lines between public and private, complicating mainstream modes of organizing space and scrambling the ideological correlates associated with these two discursive realms. The chapter discusses how Yemeni women across generations choreograph the gendering of space within homes, streets, neighborhoods, mosques, and schools, enriching their lives with social, cultural, spiritual, and economic exchanges. The chapter shows how areas in Yemeni homes, such as women’s living rooms, sometimes function as semi-public spaces open to an extended and loosely bounded set of non-kin visitors during times set apart for sociability and religious instruction. The chapter includes a discussion of how women-only spaces in mosques reproduce or echo some features of home-based gender norms. In secondary schools, Yemeni female youth sustain or modify community-based gender separation practices to establish comfortable spaces for themselves in an ethnically and racially mixed context.

This chapter argues that the concepts of body schema and body image can deepen our understanding of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) and can advance our conception of the physiotherapeutic process. Experiences of agency and body ownership are closely connected to body schema and body image and relate directly to the self-experiences of individuals with MS. The chapter argues that the concept of self-pattern provides a way to integrate these different factors. Sensorimotor disturbances in persons with MS compromise body schema and can disrupt various elements of their self-pattern, including pre-reflective experiential, reflective, extended, and intersubjective factors. On this view, movement analysis, handling skills, and clinical reasoning within physiotherapy can be recontextualized. Specificity is particularly important in this context, as sensorimotor functions are cornerstones of intentionality and an individual’s perceptions of affordances in daily life and are not merely neurophysiological processes, as conceived in traditional views on physiotherapy.

The chapter explores the ways in which the cognitive processing of sound is a multimodal task that extends into the world via language, technology, and actions. The main source of information in this study consists of cognitive metaphors reflected in written accounts, but the chapter also outlines nonlinguistic realizations of sound quality such as visual metaphors (e.g., graphical user interfaces) and enacted metaphors (e.g., bodily actions). The transition from analog mixing boards to digital ones that maintain the actions and look of the first-generation models is explored in the context of the SIGNAL FLOW metaphor. Finally, the schematic function of force metaphors in sound production is covered.

Abstract:
Chapter 17 argues for an experiential concept of temporality that takes Kantian subjectivity as its point of reference. Drawing on Bachelard’s phenomenology of duration, it makes a case for temporal experience as fundamentally subjective and exploratory, but historically contingent. Placing the aesthetic experience of music in this context, it argues for a large-scale notion of “rhythmicized duration” as form that affords extended scope for the aesthetic experience of temporality. Finally, the author argues that aesthetic concepts of temporality, duration, and rhythm are subject to change, development, and displacement, and as a result have functioned both normatively and metaphorically in different historical periods. It suggests that there are distinctly different aesthetic experiences of time, and that this is reflected in the fact that historical paradigms of temporal experience in music shift, which in turn serves to shape our experience of rhythm as structured duration.
