Abstract:
Issues of formalising and interpreting epistemic uncertainty have always played a prominent role in Artificial Intelligence. The Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory of partial beliefs is one of the most-well known formalisms to address the partial knowledge. Similarly to the DS theory, which is a generalisation of the classical probability theory, fuzzy logic provides an alternative reasoning apparatus as compared to Boolean logic. Both theories are featured prominently within the Artificial Intelligence domain, but the unified framework accounting for all the aspects of imprecise knowledge is yet to

Clustering large data sets has become very important as the amount of available unlabeled data increases. Single Pass Fuzzy C-Means (SPFCM) is useful when memory is too limited to load the whole data set. The main idea is to divide dataset into several chunks and to apply fuzzy c-means (FCM) to each chunk. SPFCM uses the weighted cluster centers of the previous chunk in the next data chunks. However, when the number of chunks is increased, the algorithm shows sensitivity to the order in which the data is processed. Hence, we improved SPFCM by recognizing boundary and noisy data in each chunk a

The work described in this thesis stems from the idea that expert systems should be able to accurately and appropriately handle uncertain information. The D-S theory is reviewed in some detail; including its approaches to representing concepts, to representing belief, to combining belief and to per

The heterogeneity of the environments as well as the diversity of patients' needs and profiles are major constraints that challenge the spread of ambient assistive living (AAL) systems. AAL environments are usually evolving by the introduction or the disappearance of sensors, devices and assistive services to respond to the evolution of patients' conditions and human needs. Therefore, a generic framework that is able to adapt to such dynamic environments and to integrate new sensors, devices and assistive services at runtime is required. Implementing such a dynamic aspect may produce an uncert

Recent advances in the miniaturization, functionality, and integration of integrated circuits and packages, such as the system-on-package (SOP) methodology, require increasing use of microvias that generates vertical signal paths in a high-density multilayer substrate. A scanning projection excimer laser system has been utilized to fabricate the microvias. In this thesis, a novel technique implementing statistical experimental design and neural networks (NNs) is used to characterize and model the excimer laser ablation process for microvia formation.

Cett
