Abstract:
Our contribution tackles the problem of learning to understand anaphoric references in the context of robotic machine learning; e.g. Get the large screw. Put it in the left hole. Our solution assumes the probabilistic theory of learning spelt out in earlier publications. Associations are formed probabilistically between constituents of the verbal command and constituents of a presupposed internal representation. The theory is extended, as a first step, to anaphora by learning how to distinguish between incorrect surface depth and the correct tree-structure depth of the anaphoric references.

ABSTRACT In this paper, a method is proposed for extracting fracture parameters in isotropic material cracking via a stable generalized/extended finite element method. The numerical results of the stress intensity factors and scaled condition number of the system matrix are presented and compared with different enrichment schemes or those reported in related references. The good agreement and convergence of the results obtained by the developed method with those obtained by other solutions or enrichment schemes proves the applicability of the proposed approach and confirms its capability of efficiently extracting fracture parameters in isotropic materials.

Full text
Abstract:
In today's highly competitive, volatile and increasingly global manufacturing environment, manufacturing companies are increasingly aware of the need for agility and effectiveness at the supply-chain level, rather than simply at company level. Business Process Re-engineering and the resulting emphasis on core competence has influenced a move towards de-centralisation, flatter organisation structures and increased use of "outsourcing". It has been said that it is now supply-chain versus supply-chain and that this poses both opportunity and threat for SMEs. While some work has been done in relation to developing the concept of integrated supply-chains, relatively little has been published with respect to the concept of "Extended Enterprise (EE)", the "highest' 'level of inter-enterprise integration. This thesis provides a thorough review of literature with respect to supply-chain integration and Extended Enterprise. Current practice is evaluated on the basis of the literature review and an analysis of a questionnaire and some Case Study companies. A detailed description of Extended Enterprise is provided and a conceptual reference model is developed, with the aim of providing a strategic planning tool, which will help organisations to identify the extent to which they operate as part of an EE. The model is intended also to help organisations in their evolution towards more effective operation within EE. One of the key characteristics/enablers of EE is stated as the existence of an organisational structure, which supports the effective identification, rationalisation and deployment of core competence within an EE. An approach based upon the concept of a "Process Breakdown Structure" is introduced and is evaluated in the context of a Case Study Company.

MacFadden, James. "Computational methods for incompressible fluid flows, with reference to interface modelling by an extended finite element method." Thesis, Swansea University, 2006. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42810.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis an implicit Semi-Discrete Stabilized eXtended Finite Element formulation has been successfully developed and implemented for laminar Newtonian incompressible fluid flows. In doing so we have contributed to the research into the field of incompressible fluid flows, multiphase flow and fluid-rigid body interaction. The fluid flows are governed by the incompressible viscous Navier-Stokes equations, using a Finite Element formulation to model the fluid behaviour numerically. A Semi-Discrete time integration scheme was implemented, discretizing in space, leaving the system of ordinary differential equations to be integrated in time. Initially the classical Galerkin method is used to formulate the boundary value problem from the governing equations, however stability issues due to incompressibility and dominant advection terms force the implementation of the stabilized formulation, i.e. SUPG/PSPG. This approach gives greater flexibility in choice of velocity/pressure interpolations, such as equal order functions. The time integration schemes (Generalized alpha method and Generalized Midpoint rule) were compared and contrasted, with the Generalized alpha method demonstrating improved convergence. The highly nonlinear form of the governing equations required an implicit iterative solver and the Newton-Raphson procedure was chosen. Several tests were performed throughout the formulation of the boundary value problem to validate the implementation. The result, a robust, efficient and accurate unsteady incompressible Newtonian fluid formulation. extended FEM was introduced by adding terms to the FEM formulation in a Partition of Unity framework. With the addition of complex solution procedures X-FEM was implemented and tested for multiphase and fluid-rigid body interaction, demonstrating the attractive qualities of this method.

Full text
Abstract:

Sensor fusion deals with the merging of several signals into one, extracting a better and more reliable result. Traditionally the Kalmanfilter is used for this purpose and the aircraft navigation has benefited tremendously from its use. This thesis considers the merge of two navigation systems, the GPS positioning system and the Saab developed Synthetic Attitude and Heading Reference System (SAHRS). The purpose is to find a model for such a fusion and to investigate whether the fusion will improve the overall navigation performance. The non-linear nature of the navigation equations will lead to the use of the extended Kalman filter and the model is evaluated against both simulated and real data. The results show that this strategy indeed works but problems will arise when the GPS signal falls away.

Abstract:
The Roman Catholic Church, the Methodist Church, and the Church of England recently introduced a service of 'extended communion',which is the distribution of previously consecrated elements by lay-people to congregations, in the absence of a priest This has been a highly controversial service, many theologians being against it, while at the same time policy-makers having to introduce the service. It is justified in part by reference to patristic precedent and to pastoral need, which raises significant theoretical questions about the relationship of theory and practice. This thesis analyzes the introduction of this service, particularly in relation to the changing context for the church, and the declining numbers of clergy. Policy-maker's assumptions are identified as hypotheses to test The research then conducts a small-scale qualitative research project in the Diocese of Oxford to uncover and evaluate significant issues in practice. This part of the thesis, tests the ten hypotheses previously identified, and discovers and evaluates the development oflocal theology, previous research not having included this level of theological debate. 32 interviews in six parishes were conducted, as well as observational research and documentary analysis. The research challenges the assumption that extended communion is primarily a rural phenomenon, and the evidence uncovered suggests that the principal usage is clergy cover, whatever the espoused theory. This gap between theory and practice is developed into a methodological debate about the relationship between empirical research and theological enquiry. A model is created which gives a priority to revelation, but acknowledges its interpretation as provisional, and allows a challenge to theology from empirical findings.

Torla, Areej. "The application of Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the extended continential shelf, with special reference to Malaysia." Thesis, Brunel University, 2013. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/14240.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to clarify the ambiguity in the law relating to the extended continental shelf in Article 76 of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Another aim was to study the application of the law in a more focused part of the world, the region of East Asia, and in particular, Malaysia. The study also sought to propose solutions to issues relating to the extended continental shelf. The history of the law relating to the continental shelf, the codification of the law, and the enforcement of the law by the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf is presented. Besides that, Article 76 was also thoroughly discussed in order to identify the problems involved. Besides that, the two biggest issues which determine the outer limits of the continental shelf are examined. These are issues relating to ridges and submarine elevations and the application of the foot of continental slope provisions. The study examined the problems involved with the legal and scientific interface found in Article 76 and addressed them by referring to the legislative history of Article 76, State practice and the practice of the Commission. The continental shelf in the East Asian region is also analysed in order to provide an overview of the continental shelf issues in the region. Special reference to Malaysia is made as a State that has made a submission on its outer limits of the continental shelf. A thorough analysis was made based on the findings made in this study. This study also explored possible solutions to the continental shelf issues discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ultrafast imaging of isolated objects with nanometric spatial resolution is a great challenge in our time. The lensless imaging techniques have shown great potential to answer this challenge. In lensless imaging, one can reconstruct sample images from their diffraction patterns with computational algorithms, which replace the conventional lens systems. Using ultrafast and coherent light sources, such as free electron laser and high order harmonics, one can investigate dynamic phenomena at the femtosecond time scale. In this thesis work, I present the lenless imaging experiments using XUV radiation provided by a laser driven high order harmonic beamline. The manuscript is composed of an introduction, a chapter of theoretical background, three chapters of main research work and a general conclusion with perspectives. The first part of this work concerns the development of the harmonic beamline to optimize the illumination condition for lensless imaging. The second part concentrates on the imaging techniques: the Coherent Diffraction Imaging (CDI), the Fourier Transform Holography (FTH) and the Holography using extended references (HERALDO). The reconstructions have achieved 78 nm spatial resolution in case of CDI and 112 nm resolution in case of HERALDO, both in single-shot regime corresponding to a temporal resolution of 20 fs. The third part presents the first physical application on the harmonic beamline using the lensless imaging. Samples with magnetic nano-domains have been studied with sub-100 nm spatial resolution, which paves the way for ultrafast magnetic dynamic studies. At the end, single-shot 3D imaging and further beamline development have been discussed

Nieto, Mauricio. Exploration, Religion and Empire in the Sixteenth-century Ibero-Atlantic World. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463725316.

Abstract:
The Iberian conquest of the Atlantic at the beginning of the sixteenth century had a notable impact on the formation of the new world order in which Christian Europe claimed control over most a considerable part of the planet. This was possible thanks to the confluence of different and inseparable factors: the development of new technical capacities and favorable geographical conditions in which to navigate the great oceans; the Christian mandate to extend the faith; the need for new trade routes; and an imperial organization aspiring to global dominance. The author explores new methods for approaching old historiographical problems of the Renaissance — such as the discovery and conquest of America, the birth of modern science, and the problem of Eurocentrism — now in reference to actors and regions scarcely visible in the complex history of modern Europe: the ships, the wind, the navigators, their instruments, their gods, saints, and demons.

Spencer-Hall, Alicia. Medieval Saints and Modern Screens. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462982277.

Full text
Abstract:
This ground-breaking book brings theoretical perspectives from twenty-first century media, film, and cultural studies to medieval hagiography. Medieval Saints and Modern Screens stakes the claim for a provocative new methodological intervention: consideration of hagiography as media. More precisely, hagiography is most productively understood as cinematic media. Medieval mystical episodes are made intelligible to modern audiences through reference to the filmic - the language, form, and lived experience of cinema. Similarly, reference to the realm of the mystical affords a means to express the disconcerting physical and emotional effects of watching cinema. Moreover, cinematic spectatorship affords, at times, a (more or less) secular experience of visionary transcendence: an 'agape-ic encounter'. The medieval saint's visions of God are but one pole of a spectrum of visual experience which extends into our present multi-media moment. We too conjure godly visions: on our smartphones, on the silver screen, and on our TVs and laptops. This book places contemporary pop-culture media - such as blockbuster movie The Dark Knight, Kim Kardashian West's social media feeds, and the outputs of online role-players in Second Life - in dialogue with a corpus of thirteenth-century Latin biographies, 'Holy Women of Liège'. In these texts, holy women see God, and see God often. Their experiences fundamentally orient their life, and offer the women new routes to knowledge, agency, and belonging. For the holy visionaries of Liège, as with us modern 'seers', visions are physically intimate, ideologically overloaded spaces. Through theoretically informed close readings, Medieval Saints and Modern Screens reveals the interconnection of decidedly 'old' media - medieval textualities - and artefacts of our 'new media' ecology, which all serve as spaces in which altogether human concerns are brought before the contemporary culture's eyes.

Abstract:
AbstractThis review will be concerned with our knowledge of extended matter under the governance of strong interaction, in short: QCD matter. Strictly speaking, the hadrons are representing the first layer of extended QCD architecture. In fact we encounter the characteristic phenomena of confinement as distances grow to the scale of 1 fm (i.e. hadron size): loss of the chiral symmetry property of the elementary QCD Lagrangian via non-perturbative generation of “massive” quark and gluon condensates, that replace the bare QCD vacuum. However, given such first experiences of transition from short range perturbative QCD phenomena (jet physics etc.), toward extended, non perturbative QCD hadron structure, we shall proceed here to systems with dimensions far exceeding the force range: matter in the interior of heavy nuclei, or in neutron stars, and primordial matter in the cosmological era from electro-weak decoupling (10−12 s) to hadron formation (0.5 ⋅ 10−5 s). This primordial matter, prior to hadronization, should be deconfined in its QCD sector, forming a plasma (i.e. color conducting) state of quarks and gluons: the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP).

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper examines the practices of translation in the 1551 Atlas of ‘Alī al-Sharafī of Sfax (d. after 1579). Drawing on conceptual frameworks from translation studies, linguistics, and other disciplines of textual and historical analysis, we argue that the iconographic and textual elements of the atlas –such as calendrical tables, qibla charts, knot patterns in frames, and depictions of flags and banners in sectional charts– reflect a quest for ways to culturally adapt map-making practices that were shared across the Mediterranean realm. As such, the product in question cannot be fully understood through the lens of traditional dichotomies such as Islamic vs. Christian or European vs. Middle Eastern or North African, as its cultural references and semiotic repertoire extend beyond subregional and confessional demarcations.

Abstract:
Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes are a class of manufacturing processes in which parts are fabricated in a layer-by-layer fashion. The layer-by-layer fabrication method creates layer-to-layer dynamics. Implementing process control that neglects the layer-to-layer dynamics can lead to process instability. While repetitive process controllers which utilize only layer-to-layer feedback are a viable method, their usefulness is limited in that they are not well-suited for tracking non-periodic layer-domain references. However, since the entire reference signal is typically known a priori in AM process fabrications, a predictive control methodology can be useful for controlling fabrications in which the reference signal is non-periodic. In this paper a model predictive control formulation is extended to two-dimensions and utilized for repetitive process control Simulation results comparing open-loop and controlled fabrications for a Laser Metal Deposition process are given.

Abstract:
The quasi-orthogonal surface method of calculation of three-dimensional flow of references (1, 2, 3) is extended to take account of the influences of upstream and downstream flow and to include various losses in the impeller. By this method, the three-dimensional flow distribution of two impellers were calculated and the results were compared with experimental data. It was found that the calculation results of the present method which takes account of the gradient of entropy and the upstream and downstream conditions are in closer agreement with the experimental results than the previous method.

Full text
Abstract:
Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) susceptibility of bottom mounted instrument (BMI) nozzles in the South Texas Project reactor vessels was considered low due to the Tcold temperature of the bottom head. During a routine bare metal visual inspection of the Unit 1 bottom head in April 2003 small boric acid deposits were identified at the location where two of the BMI nozzles penetrated the bottom surface of the vessel head. Subsequent nondestructive examination showed three cracks in one of the nozzles two crack in the second nozzle and no cracks in the other 56 nozzles. The nondestructive examinations showed that both leaking nozzles had an axial crack in the nozzle base metal extending from above the J-weld to below the J-weld. One of these cracks extended nearly through-wall while the other did not extend through wall. A boat sample removed from one of the leaking nozzles confirmed the presence of a PWSCC crack in the nozzle base metal and the presence of welding defects at the tube to J-weld interface which could be responsible for initiating the cracks. This paper summarizes the field inspections and laboratory investigations and briefly descries the repair method. See References 1 and 2 for additional information.

In 2018 26th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone26-82631.

Abstract:
Nuclear reactor codes require validation with appropriate data representing the plant for specific scenarios. The thermal-hydraulic data is scattered in different locations and in different formats. Some of the data is in danger of being lost. A relational database is being developed to organize the international thermal hydraulic test data for various reactor concepts and different scenarios. At the reactor system level, that data is organized to include separate effect tests and integral effect tests for specific scenarios and corresponding phenomena. The database relies on the phenomena identification sections of expert developed PIRTs. The database will provide a summary of appropriate data, review of facility information, test description, instrumentation, references for the experimental data and some examples of application of the data for validation. The database has expandable platform and will accommodate different types of reactors and thermal-hydraulic tests. The current database platform includes scenarios for PWR, BWR, VVER, and specific benchmarks for CFD modelling data and is to be expanded to include references for molten salt reactors. There are place holders for high temperature gas cooled reactors, CANDU and liquid metal reactors. This relational database is called The International Experimental Thermal Hydraulic Systems database – TIETHYS and currently resides at Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the OECD and is freely open to public access. Going forward the database will be extended to include additional links and data as they become available. The organizations conducting thermal-hydraulic tests are encouraged to submit their test data for inclusion in database for wider exposure and for preservation. https://www.oecd-nea.org/tiethysweb/

In ASME 2018 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2018-84460.

Full text
Abstract:
In new design of heat exchangers with high turbulence intensity and low pressure drop in the shell side, parameters or structures beyond the standards may be adopted and failure risk due to fluid induced vibration can increase. As pitch ratio is related with some significant parameters, the range of pitch ratio determines whether the FIV calculation could be established. In this research, FIV of heat exchangers with pitch ratio beyond the standards was investigated on mechanisms such as vortex shedding, turbulent buffeting and fluid elastic instability. Both theoretical and numerical methods have been applied during the study to get parameters beyond the pitch ratio range. Parameters related to pitch ratio such as additional mass coefficient Cm and damping ratio ζ were extended, and then verified by experiments. Calculating cases on several conditions were accomplished as well as comparation with literatures. The results and methods could be guidelines for the design of new type of heat exchangers and references in the amendment of relevant standards.

Abstract:
Abstract Prediction of carbon monoxide (CO) emission is critical in gas turbine combustion. Compact yet accurate reaction mechanisms are required to predict CO with reasonable computing cost. This study uses SHERPA optimization algorithm to optimize the kinetic rate parameters of a 3-step methane-air global reaction mechanism for improved CO predictions. DARS is used as the chemical kinetics solver. Freely propagating laminar flame and constant pressure reactor solutions with GRI-Mech 3.0 reaction mechanism are used as references for optimization. Tradeoffs in the choice of solution techniques and solver settings for fast and accurate design runs are discussed in the paper. Optimization results and their interpretation for improving the design study is also presented. The optimal results show significant improvements in predictions compared to the baseline case. The workflow and best practices presented in this paper may be extended to optimize global reaction mechanisms for any given range of operating conditions.
