The variation of interfacial tension of a solution with surfactant concentration in bulk can be used, in conjunction with the Gibbs adsorption equation, to probe the behaviour of adsorbed surfactant monolayers. An adsorption isotherm equation expresses the relationship between bulk and surface concentrations of surfactant, and is used to determine thermodynamic quantities of surfactant adsorption. The variation of the surface pressure of a surfactant monolayer with the surface concentration is described by a surface equation of state, which reflects something of the nature of a monolayer. The way in which inorganic electrolytes modify the adsorption and monolayer behaviour of ionic surfactants is explained, and adsorption from surfactant mixtures is also introduced. In the Appendix, the discussion is extended to the treatment of adsorbed monolayers as two-dimensional solutions of surfactant with solvent molecules, rather than as two-dimensional gases.

This chapter presents the results of growing GeMn nanocolumns on Ge(001) substrates by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The samples have been prepared by co-depositing Ge and Mn at growth temperature of 130°C and Mn at concentration of ~6% to ensure the reproduction of GeMn nanocolumns. Based on the observation of changes in reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) patterns during nanocolumn growth, surface signals of GeMn nanocolumn formation have been identified. Structural analysis using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show the self-assembled nanocolumns with core-shell structure extend through the whole thickness of the GeMn layer. Most of nanocolumns are oriented perpendicular to the interface along the growth direction. The nanocolumn size has been determined to be about 5–8 nm in diameter and a maximum height of 80 nm. A phenomenological model has been proposed to explain the driving force for self-assembly and growth mechanisms of GeMn nanocolumns. The in-plane or lateral Mn diffusion/segregation is driven by a low solubility of Mn in Ge while the driving force of Mn vertical segregation is induced by the surfactant effect along the [001] direction.

In efforts to increase and extend production from oil and gas fields, as well as to keep wells operational, petroleum engineers pump a wide variety of fluids into the subsurface. Fluids are injected into petroleum reservoirs for a number of purposes, including: • Waterflooding, where an available fresh or saline water is injected into the reservoir to displace oil toward producing wells. • Improved Oil Recovery (IOR), where a range of more exotic fluids such as steam (hot water), caustic solutions, carbon dioxide, foams, polymers, surfactants, and so on are injected to improve recovery beyond what might be obtained by waterflooding alone. • Near-well treatments, in which chemicals are injected into producing and sometimes injector wells, where they are intended to react with the reservoir rock. Well stimulation techniques such as acidization, for example, are intended to increase the formation's permeability. Alternatively, producing wells may receive “squeeze treatments” in which a mineral scale inhibitor is injected into the formation. In this case, the treatment is designed so that the inhibitor sorbs onto mineral surfaces, where it can gradually desorb into the formation water during production. • Pressure management, where fluid is injected into oil fields in order to maintain adequate fluid pressure in reservoir rocks. Calcium carbonate may precipitate as mineral scale, for example, if pressure is allowed to deteriorate, especially in fields where formation fluids are rich in Ca++ and HCO3- and CO2 fugacity is high. In each of these procedures, the injected fluid can be expected to be far from equilibrium with sediments and formation waters. As such, it is likely to react extensively once it enters the formation, causing some minerals to dissolve and others to precipitate. Hutcheon (1984) appropriately refers to this process as “artificial diagenesis,” drawing an analogy to the role of groundwater flow in the diagenesis of natural sediments (see Chapter 19). Further reaction is likely if the injected fluid breaks through to producing wells and mixes there with formation waters. There is considerable potential, therefore, for mineral scale, such as barium sulfate (see the next section), to form during these procedures.

In this study, nucleate pool boiling of surfactant solutions are investigated. The surfactants chosen for the study are an ionic sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), nonionic ECOSURF™ EH-14, and nonionic ECOSURF™ SA-9. It is observed that adding a small amount of surfactant alters the water boiling phenomenon considerably. Boiling curves for different concentrations are shifted to the left.
