A study was conducted to investigate the communication process through which the extension workers of Benue Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (BNARDA) disseminate improved farm practices to rural women farmers. A total of 250 women farmers who were in contact with the extension services were randomly selected and interviewed. The results showed that 90% of them recognized personal contacts, group meetings of farmers, and method-and-result demonstration sites as channels through which they communicated with the extension workers. Classical cadherin adhesion molecules are key determinants of cell–cell recognition during development and in post-embryonic life. A decisive step in productive cadherin-based recognition is the conversion of nascent adhesions into stable zones of contact. It is increasingly clear that such contact zone extension entails active cooperation between cadherin adhesion and the force-generating capacity of the actin cytoskeleton. Cortactin has recently emerged as an important regulator of actin dynamics in several forms of cell motility. We now report that cortactin is recruited to cell–cell adhesi

The adhesion strength of a contact between a rotationally symmetric indenter and an elastic half-space is analysed analytically and numerically using an extension of the method of dimensionality reduction for superimposed normal/tangential adhesive contacts. In particular, the dependence of the critical adhesion force on the simultaneously applied tangential force is obtained and the relevant dimensionless parameters of the problem are identified. The fracture criterion used coincides with that suggested by Johnson. In this paper, it is used to develop a method that is applicable straightforwa

In this work, we investigate the extension of the Lawn and Evans indentation fracture model, developed primarily for microscale contact, to nanoscale contacts. Systematic nanoindentation fracture experiments are performed on Si (100) using a sharp diamond cube corner (radius, r = 32 nm) indenter as a function of load, load cycles, contact dimension, and contact separation. Atomic force microscopy is used to image and measure contact deformation and fracture. The experimental results show that the threshold load for fracture was 290 μN, which is lower than previously reported. Adjacent indents

In the method of dimensionality reduction (MDR), contacts of three-dimensional bodies are mapped to the contact problem with a one-dimensional elastic or viscoelastic foundation. This is valid for the normal contact, the tangential contact and the normal contact of viscoelastic bodies. For the above classes of contact problems, several examples are considered and discussed in detail. This includes: (a) Fretting wear for arbitrary histories of loading (for simultaneous oscillations both in normal and horizontal directions); (b) Frictional damping under the influence of oscillations in normal an

Abstract:
During the last years the Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) technique was applied by many researchers for the calculation of the deformations in contact problems. The use of conventional convolution algorithms however led to the inclusion of a periodicity error that proved hard to correct. The correction procedures that had been suggested so far, involved the extension of the calculation grid and thus negated any time gains that the FFT would provide. In order to overcome the lack of accuracy of the current FFT methods, a new method for the calculation of deformations for line contacts was develop

The Middle and South Forks of the Ogden River bisect the quadrangle and are important watersheds and recreational areas to the communities of Ogden Valley and the Wasatch Front. The towns of Huntsville and Eden are just west of the quadrangle, unincorporated communities with year-round residents are present throughout the quadrangle, and numerous summer-cabin communities are present in the eastern part of the quadrangle. During deglaciation, ice retreat impounded northeastern drainage forming local ice-contact lakes and areas of subaerial glaciofluvial outwash. The current report presents a state-of-the-art review of fatigue and fracture technology, as it applies to seam-welded pipe. This review places the MAT-8 fracture model in context with pre-existing technology.
