Products such as headphones, music streaming platforms, and learning assessments foster a hearing-centric realization of music that places auditory senses at the forefront of musical experience. Yet within the context of Deaf culture, a linguistic minority defined by the use of sign language, music takes on new meaning as musical experience is expanded to other senses of the body. Despite this relative construction, music in Deaf culture has been subjugated to a hegemonic ideology that undermines and marginalizes Deaf experiences of sound. However, Deaf musicians have been able to work toward subverting the ideological limitations that have been placed on their music, and by extension their bodies, by adapting musical structures produced by mainstream society and realigning them toward Deaf priorities. Using ethnographic methods including artist interviews, this chapter investigates how Deaf rappers have created a style of hip hop that prioritizes Deaf experiences of sound over hearing ones and considers how, through performance, they subvert hegemonic control over Deaf musical expression and promote the inclusion of Deaf forms of musicking.

Abstract:
Abstract While extensive research has demonstrated the social, emotional, and cognitive benefits that may be associated with participatory music-making among older adults, there has been less attention paid to the actual tools (e.g., musical instruments, resources) that can provide a ‘way in’ to creative musical development in later life, and limited research has focused on the intersection between the pedagogies, tools, and contexts, and the ways in which those factors may influence creative or developmental outcomes. This chapter focuses on two community groups of novice adult music learners, where the aim was to identify the musical tools and the pedagogies that would support creative expression and musical development. The two groups used a range of instruments, including rock band instruments, percussion, and iPads, in activities that focused on learning musical concepts, creative improvisation and songwriting, and learning to perform well-loved songs. Both groups pivoted from in-person to online music-making during the global COVID-19 pandemic, when the iPads became a central tool. Data were collected through video recordings of the weekly offline music sessions, facilitator field notes, and through focus groups and interviews with group participants. The chapter will explore the following questions: What are the facilitation approaches that can support creative music-making with older adult novice musicians, within offline (in-person) and online environments? What are the learner perceptions associated with the use of different instruments, including mobile technologies (iPads), in the context of later-life creative music participation?

Abstract:
This chapter aims to provide insights into the perspectives that arose from the data collection and analysis carried out by the Norwegian team of the Erasmus+ project REACT - Rethinking Music Performance in European Higher Education Music Institutions. The data was collected through a series of small-scale studies, including REACT - network activity at the University of Agder and the Academy of Music in Oslo, and an analysis of reports following the participation of a group of fourteen music performance students in a creative ensemble project at the University of Agder. We also refer to a small curriculum study conducted at the University of Agder. The study addressed some of the educational demands that emerged from extensive international research on music performance curricula and pedagogy in Higher Music Education during the early, mid, and late 2010s. The chapter highlights novel approaches to music performance, including community-based perspectives, creative ensemble collaborations, and improvisation in students' music education. These approaches aim to address the challenges that students face when pursuing professional careers in music today. The discussion sheds light on the ways in which music education curricula can be strengthened to support students entering their professional music careers and to broaden their musical thinking, thus preparing them to become contributors in society. The chapter references the small-scale research project Music for Microsculptures, an interdisciplinary student concert that reflects the results of data analysis and aspects often commented on in research on music performance curricula in Higher Education.

When we consider the needs we may have in the field of electroacoustic music composition, a tool allowing a graphic representation of sound and musical phenomena seems interesting to develop. UPISketch is one of these tools. Part of this chapter focuses on describing the abundance of ideas that the development of such a tool can inspire. UPISketch is a subset of graphical score systems: it is positioned on the question of the graphical representation of quantitative data. It has the potential to update the breakthroughs that Xenakis made through his mathematical approach by making them newly accessible via intuitive graphic interfaces. New possibilities, not yet implemented in the software, will be evoked. Specifically, it is now possible to imagine an extension of the legacy of Xenakis's thinking on sieves and probabilities, in the graphic domain with UPISketch, in a junction that had never been realized with UPIC.

Music has been influenced by digital technology over the last few decades. With the computer, the musical composition could trespass the use of acoustic instruments demanding to musicians and composers a sort of computer programming skills for the development of musical applications. In order to simplify the development of musical applications, several tools and musical programming languages arose bringing some facilities to lay-musicians on computer programming to use the computer to make music. The field of music generation has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years, thanks to the emergence of deep learning techniques. In this paper, we present a novel music generation system utilizing a character level Recurrent Neural Network (char RNN) empowered by a hybrid architecture of Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) cells. Our system is trained on a comprehensive dataset consisting of 340 tunes represented in ABC notation, a text based format for musical compositions. By predicting the subsequent character in a sequence of ABC notation, our model adeptl

The use of the computer as a sound generator is omnipresent in current music production and ranges from music notation programs playing back samples via MIDI control to specially programmed sound synthesis programs. The term ‚computer‘ is generally understood as a complete set of hardware and software. But a closer look at this complete set is definitely worthwhile and poses some systematical challenges. In the early days of digital sound synthesis in real time, the hardware is strongly connected to the resulting sound. The control was done by means of a programming language or a specially des

Abstract:
Dance choreography for a piece of music is a challenging task, having to be creative in presenting distinctive stylistic dance elements while taking into account the musical theme and rhythm. It has been tackled by different approaches such as similarity retrieval, sequence-to-sequence modeling and generative adversarial networks, but their generated dance sequences are often short of motion realism, diversity and music consistency. In this paper, we propose a Music-to-Dance with Optimal Transport Network (MDOT-Net) for learning to generate 3D dance choreographies from music. We introduce an o
