Abstract:
Introduction. Osteomas are a slow growing benign neoplasm of unknown etiology very rarely involving the temporal bone. They develop in the external auditory canal on squamous sections, in the mastoid, middle and inner ear. By bone composition they are divided into spongious (osteoma spongiosum) and compact osteomas (osteoma eburnum); by growth direction, into outward-growing (exosteoma) and in inwardgrowing (endosteoma); into unilateral and bilateral; by size, into small and gigantic; by surface structure, into smooth and multilobular; by number, into solitary and multiple; into symmetrical and asymmetrical. The symptoms of intracanalicular osteomas are the result of auditory canal obstruction. Diagnosis is made based on case history, clinical examination, audiological processing and radiography (temporal bone CT scan), and confirmed by histopathological examination of the bone. In terms of differential diagnosis, they must be distinguished from exostoses, bone tissue proliferation and osteoid osteomata. The progress of the disease is prolonged, as they are slow growing, asymptomatic and benign tumours. Therapy is surgical only. Case Outline. The report presents the case of a 70-year old patient with the osteoma of the right external auditory canal. In our patient, the osteoma arose in the auditory canal, the most frequent localization; it was unilateral, solitary, multilobular and compact. It was discovered accidentally, during otoscopic examination. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by CT scan of the temporal bone. We applied surgical therapy by retroauricular approach. The removed bone change was about 12 mm high, 13-14 mm deep and about 8 mm wide. Histopathological findings confirmed osteoma. Conclusion. Due to their slow growth, the rate of auditory canal osteomas develop asymptomatically for a long time without the characteristic clinical features. In most cases, they are discovered accidentally during otoscopic or radiographic examination. The method of choice in diagnosis is temporal bone CT scan. Therapy is surgical.

Abstract:
18F fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is widely used for PET CT examinations; however, positron-emitting florin generates relatively high gamma radiation (511 keV) raising occupational as well as public safety concerns. This study aimed to measure the rate of radiation emitted from patients that underwent 18FDG PET/CT examination for oncological conditions, approximately 2 hours after the procedure, before and after urination. A total of 100 patients who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT examination were included in this study. Following imaging, external radiation exposure rate was measured using proportional counter probe at 1-m distance, approximately 2 hours after the completion of imaging procedure, before and after urination. Factors effecting resulting exposure from patients were examined. The mean post-urination activity ranged between 0.2 and 6.3 μSv/h (median, 1.8 μSv/h). Presence of metastasis, tumor type and gender did not have any effect on mean post-urination activity (P>0.05 for all comparisons). Older age, greater BMI and higher administered dose were associated with higher post-urination activity (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). Findings of this study showed that 2 hours after radionuclide injection, activity rate from patients is far below the recommended limits for general population and further decreases after urination. Discharging patients at 2 hours after urination would not seem to pose radiation health risk for relatives, public or other hospital staff.

Bullock, David Grahame. "External quality assessment in clinical chemistry : an examination of requirements, applications and benefits." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 1988. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1405/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes studies of the requirements, applications and benefits of external quality assessment (EQA) of clinical chemistry laboratories. The involvement of EQA in assessing the analytical quality of results from clinical chemistry laboratories is well-established. This thesis addresses the contribution of EQA in improving clinical chemistry practice and therefore patient care rather than as a method of 'policing' laboratory performance which is the objective of many national EQA schemes. The use of EQA in the assessment of interlaboratory agreement, of analytical methods, of individual laboratory performance, and of quality control and calibration materials is discussed. Surveys are examined as a means to assess the prevailing standard of performance and determine priorities for further EQA to improve performance. The contribution of scoring systems to scheme success by making the information more intelligible to participants is described. The importance of reliable target values is shown, and the reproducibility and accuracy of consensus values in such schemes have been studied. EQA data are shown to be invaluable in providing information on the relative performance of analytical procedures, and on factors such as analyte concentration and laboratory workload which affect performance. The stepwise interpretation of the Variance Index scoring system, and the use of graphical presentations in assisting the assessment of laboratory performance are described. Finally, the use of EQA data in the study of the suitability of quality control materials is examined, with particular reference to their commutability, their use in calibration, and the effects of manufacturing procedures upon their properties. This thesis illustrates the importance of EQA to clinical chemistry practice and to patient care.

Youssef, Mohammed Ali. "An examination of the utility of Microsoft.net in intergrating ERP with external systems." Thesis, University of East London, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.532671.

Full text
Abstract:
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software systems have been gaining increasing prominence in recent times and are now regarded as one of the most important components of the corporate IT infrastructure. Indeed, in organisations where they are installed, ERP systems usually form the centre of this infrastructure. Being at the centre of a wider system consisting of several software components, ERPs usually need to be integrated with the other enterprise software solutions around them. This research examined the role that Microsoft . NET technology can play in such an integration process. This examination mainly took place through a real-life case study which involved the implementation of an integration project. The purpose of the project was to integrate an ERP system installed in a manufacturing company with an e-commerce website that was being developed to enable the company to sell its products online. The project required the two systems to be integrated so that prices on the website would be sourced directly from the ERP system and that any orders placed on the website would be sent directly into the ERP. Through the above case study, Microsoft . NET's potential role in facilitating the integration of ERP systems with external applications was analysed, resulting in a critical evaluation of the effectiveness of NET for ERP-based integration projects including conclusions on the suitability of the technology for this purpose as well as its advantages and shortcomings. In terms of research questions, the purpose of this research was to answer the following: 1) Is the Microsoft . NET platform a suitable technology to use in integrating small to mid-sized ERP systems with external third party applications and systems within an SME context? 2) How does Microsoft. NET compare with other technologies for this purpose? The conclusion that was reached was that Microsoft NET can, in fact, significantly facilitate ERP integration projects and that the technology provides several features that make it of particular use for this purpose: " Unrivalled support for Web Services and XML. "A very extensive class library providing a huge number of ready-made components. " An industry-leading development tool in Visual Studio. NET. " Inherent security features that reduce the burden on developers to secure applications. " Support for most programming languages as well as support for the use of several different languages within the same project. Furthermore, a comparison of NET with J2EE as an enabler of ERP integration with external applications reached the conclusion that NET would, in the majority of cases, constitute the better option within an SME context for the following reasons: " Faster development of projects in most cases, thereby putting less strain on the generally fewer resources available to smaller companies. " Closer integration of NET with Windows operating systems and software, with Windows being generally more popular amongst smaller companies. However, it was also concluded that in the case of ERP integration projects for larger organisations, J2EE would usually be the more suitable choice since it was found to be more suited than NET to the heterogeneous IT infrastructures generally found in such organisations. As well as evaluating NET as an enabler of ERP integration, a further contribution to knowledge that this research presented was a novel architecture that can be used to facilitate the integration of ERP systems with external applications and potentially also the integration of all of a company's systems through their ERP. This novel architecture involved using a dedicated Web Services server that would expose the functionality and data of the ERP and would constitute a central integration hub.

Gkliatis, Ioannis P. "An examination of board director's roles and the impact of the external environment and board characteristics." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/11032.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: The thesis aims to explore the roles that board directors undertake and understand whether there is an impact of the external organisational environment as well as several board characteristics on these roles. Design/ Methodology Approach: Building on existing literature a model is developed to test hypothesized relationships—i.e. directors’ roles with external environment and board characteristics. Measurements are designed—withdrawing them from the literature—to collect quantitative data from directors of UK organisations. The responses were collected from 115 directors working in UK organisations. Principal component analysis is conducted to reduce the data and propose a set of directors’ roles and correlation as well as regression analyses are utilised in order to test the hypothesised relationships. Findings: The results of the principal component analysis propose a set of six distinct roles for board directors, providing a new framework for future researchers. In addition, it is found that both the external environment and the board characteristics have some impact on what directors do, extending the limited empirical evidence found in the literature. However, the theoretical framework needs further examination and research. Limitations/Future Recommendations: The current thesis is evidenced by various limitations. Firstly, additional constructs can be added as determinants of the directors’ roles. Secondly, the response rate in the survey is low, which is regarded as a limitation, although there are limited studies offering quantitative results from board members.

Thornton, Charles D. "An examination of the impact of resources and the external environment amongst providers of UK banking services." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2012. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/11560.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis answers calls for fine-grained studies of product diversification, in this case, predominantly using the resource based view of the firm. The context is UK providers of banking services. The thesis has developed the concept of resource matching. Resource matching combines levels of: resource heterogeneity, resource similarity and difference, and the external environmental setting of the organisation with the business performance of product diversification. Resource matching significantly increases the limited conceptual underpinning of diversification RBV by adapting and developing concepts from single firm RBV literature. Two new research strategies were developed to gather data on multiple resources and external factors. One was unused due to access issues during the credit crunch. The other, which was used, utilised multiple sources of publicly available information both qualitative and quantitative. These conceptual and methodological developments offer a way to restart the research on the impact of product diversification on business performance. This research has stalled due to conflicting results and methodological issues. Twenty nine providers of banking services in the UK where examined: building societies; other providers of retail banking services; providers of investment banking services; and combined banks which offer both investment and retail banking services. This thesis found: varying amounts of resource heterogeneity, resource bundles can be constructed from publicly available external data, performance in diversification does not adhere to the previously posited curvilinear pattern but to one of the greater the product diversification the greater the business performance risk and reward, with rewards being both positive and negative, and finally the external environment does vary within the industry. The results on product diversification performance suggest of a new way of looking at product diversification which might reconcile the previous conflicting results. A modified version of the conceptual model of resource matching was developed to take account of the results. Opportunities for further work include; studying other industries and providers of banking services in other countries, refining the single industry fine grained research methods and further developing the resource matching model.

Reder, Julian Mark. "The Medvedev years : an examination of the external forces & internal dynamics affecting the Kremlin's foreign policy decisions." Thesis, University of Hull, 2013. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:7197.

Full text
Abstract:
The central question of this thesis is what forces and personal dynamics ultimately shape the Kremlin’s responses to foreign policy issues. The legacies of Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin are traced from the Soviet democratization during the 1980’s and the constitutional empowerment of the Russian presidency during the 1990’s. These two coexistent forces of empowering the average citizen in a country in which the President is the most powerful authority in decision-making are examined. The forces of the Kremlin affect the current inner circle of Siloviki, Technocrats, and Yeltsin Liberals who are integral members of the policy formulation. Vladimir Putin and his handpicked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, were now at the helm of a government with these three groups of bureaucrats from 2008 to 2012. The Medvedev presidency was confronted with challenges in the post-Soviet space, which included Georgian military operations against Russia and an anti-Russian leader in Kyrgyzstan. In addition to this, the Kremlin was faced with the decisions to enforce sanctions against rogue regimes pursuing nuclear capability, specifically Iran and North Korea. The Arab Spring of 2011 brought with it momentous change in the Middle East and the Russian Federation was forced to decide whether to consent to sanctions against the Khadafy regime in Libya and the Assad regime in Syria. The six foreign policy decisions in this thesis illuminate the Kremlin’s internal dynamics as well as the handling of the external political forces enacted by Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin. Graham Allison’s Governmental Politics Model, which analyzes foreign policy from a personal perspective of the chief decision-makers, is used throughout this body of doctoral research.

Barnett, Christina. "Towards a Model of Internal/External Motivation to Respond Without Prejudice: An Examination of White Racial Identity and Affect." VCU Scholars Compass, 2017. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5203.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study explored how White racial identity influences the relationship between affective reactions to racism and one’s internal or external motivation to respond without prejudice. The first aim was to examine the bivariate relationships between White racial identity ego schemas and affective reactions to racism. The second aim examined the bivariate relationships between affective reactions to racism and an internal/external motivation to respond without prejudice. The third aim explored whether Phase I or Phase II White racial identity ego schemas explained the relation of affective reactions to racism and internal/external motivation to respond without prejudice. PROCESS mediation models were used to assess the direct and indirect effects. Results indicated that the affective reactions “fear of others” and guilt, were related to the Phase I ego schemas, Disintegration and Reintegration. Guilt and Empathic reactions to racism were correlated with the Phase II ego schema Immersion/Emersion. The Phase I ego schemas, Disintegration and Reintegration, mediated the relation between all affective reactions and an external motivation to respond without prejudice. The Phase II ego schema Immersion/Emersion failed to mediate the relation between any of the affective reactions and internal motivation.

Nortunen, S. (Simo). "Stability assessment of isolated lateral malleolar supination-external rotation-type ankle fractures." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2018. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526217932.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Isolated lateral malleolar supination-external rotation (SER) -type ankle fractures without incongruity on the standard radiographs can be either stable or unstable depending on the status of the deep deltoid ligament. Neither clinical signs of injury on the medial aspect of the ankle nor the displacement of fibular fracture on mortise radiographs seem to predict stability. Therefore, stress testing has been adopted in clinical use. No “gold standard” method exists but the manual external rotation (ER) stress test is the most extensively studied. The ER stress test has some disadvantages, and other methods—such as gravity stress radiography and magnetic resonance imaging—have been suggested instead. However, the evidence to support the use of these methods is still insufficient. The aims of this dissertation were to assess the roles of (1) morphological factors from standard radiographs of 286 patients, (2) clinical findings on the medial side of the ankle and gravity stress radiography of 79 patients, and (3) MRI of 61 patients in evaluating the stability of the ankle mortise in patients with unimalleolar SER-type fractures with no talar shift on standard radiographs. The ER stress test result was considered to be the reference for stability throughout these studies. We found that a fracture line width < 2 mm in lateral radiographs, only two fracture fragments, and female sex are independent factors predicting a stable ankle mortise. Neither clinical signs on the medial side of the ankle nor gravity stress radiography alone predict the stability of the ankle mortise accurately. According to our MRI findings, total tears of the deep deltoid ligaments are rare, and partial tears are common in this this patient group. The reliability of the MRI assessment is only moderate. In conclusion, patients with non-comminuted fractures and < 2 mm displacement on lateral radiographs have stable ankle mortises and need no further stress testing. The gravity stress radiography is an accurate test for the evaluation of the ankle mortise stability only if the clinical signs indicate a similar result with the gravity stress radiographs. The use of MRI provides no additional benefit compared to ER stress testing for stability evaluation of an SER-type ankle fracture
MRI:n tulkinnan luotettavuus on ainoastaan kohtalainen.

Abstract:
AbstractAt the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA), the accelerator-driven system (ADS) is composed of a solid-moderated and solid-reflected core (A-core) and a pulsed-neutron generator (14 MeV neutrons) or the fixed-filed alternating gradient (FFAG) accelerator (100 MeV protons). At KUCA, two external neutron sources, including 14 MeV neutrons and 100 MeV protons, are separately injected into the A-core, and employed for carrying out the ADS experiments. With the combined use of the A-core and two external neutron sources, basic and feasibility studies of ADS have been engaged in the examination of neutronics of ADS, through the measurements of statics and kinetics parameters of reactor physics, including subcritical multiplication factor, subcriticality, prompt neutron decay constant, effective delayed neutron fraction, neutron spectrum, and reaction rates.

Abstract:
Enbridge operates the longest and most complex crude oil and liquids pipeline in the world. Enbridge Pipeline systems have operated for over 50 years and comprise approximately 15,000 kilometers (9,000 miles) of pipeline, delivering more than 2 million barrels per day of crude oil and liquids. A variety of in-service non-destructive examination (NDE) processes are available to pipeline operators to inspect for internal corrosion, external corrosion and cracks. Enbridge Pipelines have completed over 2000 excavations of in-line inspection (ILI) tool-identified defects in the past several years. Enbridge has tested and utilized various NDE techniques to assess these defects with varying degrees of success. This paper identifies how Enbridge has employed a selection of automated internal and external corrosion mapping systems and advanced ultrasonic flaw sizing techniques. The review of these processes and techniques states the author’s views of the benefits, drawbacks and application nuances.

Abstract:
Semisubmersible Vortex Induced Motions have been studied extensively at model scales, and observed under field conditions. VIM response is of particular concern in evaluations of Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) fatigue damage. Historically, most of this experimental work was done with bare models, without much effort to represent actual hull surface characteristics. In this paper, the effect of these appurtenances, tow direction and wave action is investigated. There is also an examination of vortex induced yaw response. VIM response is assessed using motion trajectories, dominant response direction, and amplitudes and periods of response. Variations in these quantities are also investigated.

Abstract:
Al - Mg alloys are extensively used as structural materials in marine applications. Sensitization has emerged as a severe concern during the operation of aluminum vessels, due to the consequent high susceptibility to Intergranular Corrosion - IGC. Herein, a detailed study of sensitization on naturally sensitized, field retrieved, Al-Mg alloy samples, is presented. Specifically, samples from four Hellenic Navy - HN high speed vessels were tested according to ASTM G67 in order to quantify their Degree of Sensitization - DoS and qualified, in terms of grain boundaries (GBs) coverage with β phase with microstructural observation using Scanning Electron Microscopy - SEM and light optical microscopy. Consequently, the correlation of DoS value to the external factors that affect it becomes possible. Remarkably, material under investigation has significantly diverse chemical composition, compared to common marine grade aluminum alloys. Ultimately, correlation of Stress Corrosion Cracking behavior with the microstructure is discussed.

"A Universal Design Method Based on Analysis for Cylindrical Shells With Nozzles Due to Internal Pressure, External Forces and Moments: Part II." In ASME 2009 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. ASMEDC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2009-78147.

Full text
Abstract:
A universal design method for pressurized cylindrical shells with attached nozzles subjected to external forces (moments) and internal pressure are presented based on theoretical stress analysis. The applicable ranges of the presented design methods are extended to d/D≤0.9 and λ=d/(DT)1/2≤12. As a first step of design the required reinforcement thicknesses both of main shell and nozzle due to internal pressure can be determined by the presented theoretical solutions. When the junctions are subjected to external nozzle loads, the next step is to determine the absolute values of dimensionless longitudinal and circumferential, normal and shear, membrane and bending stresses in the main shell at the junction subjected to internal pressure and six external nozzle load components by reading out from a number of sets of curves calculated by the present theoretical method. Then the stress components at eight examination points are calculated and superposed for the combined loads. Finally the membrane and primary plus secondary stress intensities can be calculated, respectively, to meet the design criteria.

In ASME 2012 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2012-89532.

Full text
Abstract:
Many researchers have studied the structural dynamics behavior of the blade of the horizontal axis wind turbine using different approximate theories where they considered some assumptions that other researchers ignored. In a previous study, the authors considered all the extensional, torsional and flexural loadings acting on the blade with their couplings, variable airfoil cross sections with warping effects, shear deflection, rotary inertia and with or without blade’s pretwist. That previous study was performed for the linear small displacement case. In the present study, the new contribution is considering all the inclusions of the previous study but for the nonlinear large deformation case instead of the small deformation case. To the best knowledge of the authors the simultaneous inclusion of all these factors has not been done so far. The external work that acts on the blade, the total strain energy and total kinetic energy for all the different load couplings were defined (all the important strain higher order terms are kept since large deformation is considered) and used to obtain the Lagrange equations of motion. Then the load vector R, mass and linear and nonlinear stiffness matrices were deduced from the derived Lagrange equations of motion to build the nonlinear dynamic equations of motion that was solved for the three unknown displacements in the directions of x, y and z axes and the three unknown rotations about the x, y and z axes at the required stations along the length of the given blade using the Newmark implicit iteration scheme for a 14m long pretwisted blade that has a linearly decreasing NACA4415 airfoil cross section from hub to tip.

Tucker-Blackmon, Angelicque. Engagement in Engineering Pathways “E-PATH” An Initiative to Retain Non-Traditional Students in Engineering Year Three Summative External Evaluation Report. Innovative Learning Center, LLC, July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.52012/tyob9090.

Full text
Abstract:
The summative external evaluation report described the program's impact on faculty and students participating in recitation sessions and active teaching professional development sessions over two years. Student persistence and retention in engineering courses continue to be a challenge in undergraduate education, especially for students underrepresented in engineering disciplines. The program's goal was to use peer-facilitated instruction in core engineering courses known to have high attrition rates to retain underrepresented students, especially women, in engineering to diversify and broaden engineering participation. Knowledge generated around using peer-facilitated instruction at two-year colleges can improve underrepresented students' success and participation in engineering across a broad range of institutions. Students in the program participated in peer-facilitated recitation sessions linked to fundamental engineering courses, such as engineering analysis, statics, and dynamics. These courses have the highest failure rate among women and underrepresented minority students. As a mixed-methods evaluation study, student engagement was measured as students' comfort with asking questions, collaboration with peers, and applying mathematics concepts. SPSS was used to analyze pre-and post-surveys for statistical significance. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations and focus group sessions with recitation leaders. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with faculty members and students to understand their experiences in the program. Findings revealed that women students had marginalization and intimidation perceptions primarily from courses with significantly more men than women. However, they shared numerous strategies that could support them towards success through the engineering pathway. Women and underrepresented students perceived that they did not have a network of peers and faculty as role models to identify within engineering disciplines. The recitation sessions had a positive social impact on Hispanic women. As opportunities to collaborate increased, Hispanic womens' social engagement was expected to increase. This social engagement level has already been predicted to increase women students' persistence and retention in engineering and result in them not leaving the engineering pathway. An analysis of quantitative survey data from students in the three engineering courses revealed a significant effect of race and ethnicity for comfort in asking questions in class, collaborating with peers outside the classroom, and applying mathematical concepts. Further examination of this effect for comfort with asking questions in class revealed that comfort asking questions was driven by one or two extreme post-test scores of Asian students. A follow-up ANOVA for this item revealed that Asian women reported feeling excluded in the classroom. However, it was difficult to determine whether these differences are stable given the small sample size for students identifying as Asian. Furthermore, gender differences were significant for comfort in communicating with professors and peers. Overall, women reported less comfort communicating with their professors than men. Results from student metrics will inform faculty professional development efforts to increase faculty support and maximize student engagement, persistence, and retention in engineering courses at community colleges. Summative results from this project could inform the national STEM community about recitation support to further improve undergraduate engineering learning and educational research.
