Abstract:
The deepened financial integration of EDEs has heightened their susceptibility to global financial shocks and increased the instability in their credit, assets, and currency markets. It has led to significant loss of autonomy over monetary policy and the entire spectrum of interest rates. At the same time, these countries are said to have become more resilient because they have adopted more flexible exchange rate regimes, accumulated large stocks of international reserves, and reduced their exposure to the exchange rate risk by shifting from foreign currency to local currency debt. The fundamental practical principles applied to any radiation protection problem are discussed. Types of radiation that may be encountered include α‎-particles, β‎-particles, γ‎-rays, neutrons, X-rays, or a combination. Each presents its own particular practical problems in terms of radiation protection, and the properties and practical principles that should be considered for each are outlined. The framework required to manage radiation protection and the practical techniques important in restricting exposure are discussed. The practical control measures of time, distance, and shielding that

Over time, organs may lose their ability to adapt to the oxidative stressors from internal and external environments. Exercise and other lifestyle factors may slow the effects of aging. This chapter focuses on changes in three organ systems: skin, vision, and hearing. Alternative recommendations are given for preventing or delaying age-related skin conditions, eye diseases, and hearing loss. Topics covered are melanoma, skin cancer, sun exposure, xerosis, pressure ulcers, cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and presbycusis. Mock case studies are provided to further explain risk factors.

Operational risk is the ‘risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people, and systems or from external events’. Banks are required to control their operational risk exposure. This chapter discusses the three approaches Basel 2 offers to determine operational risk: the basic indicator approach, the standardized approach, and the advanced measurement approach (AMA). The first two mechanisms which Basel provides for calculating operational risk eschew the analysis of operational risks themselves, and operate on a percentage of lead indicator basis. Personal dose monitoring provides the important check and reassurance that radiation doses to those working with radiation are at a level that complies with dose constraints. The quantity which is relevant to external personal monitoring is the personal dose equivalent Hp(d) defined by the ICRU. Values at different depths d are equated to effective dose or doses to the skin or eye lens. This chapter contains the basic information that the radiation protection practitioner needs on personal monitoring, and the requirements for running a personal dose-monitoring service, including dosimeter cali

Following the administration of a radiopharmaceutical, the patient is essentially a mobile source of radiation. The hazards from the patient are contamination from radioactive tissue/body fluids, and exposure to the radiation emitted from the patient. These hazards present a risk to the patient due to self-absorbed radiation, healthcare workers, other patients, members of the public, family members (including the foetus), colleagues at work, and carers. This chapter presents the methodology used for assessing the doses to patients and critical groups, and discusses its limitations. It consider

In radiation poisoning, a distinction between exposure and contamination should be made. Decontamination by removing clothes, washing of skin, and removal of debris can remove up to 90% of external contaminated radiation. Treatment of acute life-threatening injuries takes priority over treatment of radiation poisoning. Triage of severely exposed patients can give an indication of dose and severity of the radiation dose absorbed. Survival is related to dose absorbed. Identification of the radiation source should be made by the radiation characteristics to determine the shielding necessary for p

Scope This NACE standard is a guide for selecting corrosion resistant materials for the supply, storage, pumping, and injection of water encountered in oilfield operations where external or subsea exposure to saltwater is not a consideration. These recommendations are also applicable to metals used in conjunction with carbon dioxide injection. Special metallic materials are required for many water handling systems; however, a thorough evaluation of the water in each operation should be conducted to determine if such materials are required. Nonmetals are not covered in this standard, but where
