Taking advantage of the data from Academia Sinica’s Taiwan Education Panel Survey (TEPS), this thesis investigates whether participating in extra-curricular activities affects senior high school students’ academic performance. The main finding is that participating in extra-curricular activities is beneficial for adolescents’ academic performance. There were 12,711 effective samples. They are verified by Descriptive Statistics, Crosstab, and Hierarchical Regression. The major finding is that compared with those who don’t spend time on extra-curricular activities, participating in extra-curricular activities regularly is positively associated with significant improvement in academic performance for high school students. Other minor findings include: (1) Adolescents who are girls are more likely to participate in extra- curricular activities. Those who live in townships are more likely to participate in extra- curricular activities, and those whose fathers are highly-educated are more likely to participate in extra- curricular activities. (2) Girls are more likely to be interested in arts clubs, followed by academic clubs. Boys choose sports clubs more, and arts clubs are their second choice. Senior high school students in villages and townships are more interested in sports clubs, while those from metropolis tend to participate in arts’. Adolescents whose fathers are highly-educated are interested in arts’ and academic activities and least interested in sports’. (3) Students participate in extra-curricular activities regularly every week --- girls more than boys, public school students more than their private counterparts. Those whose fathers are highly-educated participate in extra-curricular activities more regularly. (4) Different extra- curricular activities have different impact on academic performance.

The purpose of this study was to explore the current situation of extra curricular activities participation and emotional intelligence of elementary school students in grade 5-6. Furthermore, to compare the differences among them. Questionnaire survey was administered in this study. With the research instrument of ”Emotion Management Questionnaire of Children”, the subjects of this research were 437 grade fifth-sixth-grade school students in one of the public elementary school in Taipei City. The statistical methods included descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA. And, the major findings were summarized as follows: 1.The participation rate of two major extra curricular activities - sports and music were more than half(51.7%), and sports participants were nearly twice times of music participants. Average participation frequency were more than 4 hours per week, and average seniorities were around 2.7 years. 2.Boys preferred sports activities, compared to girls. In light of fathers’ job, the difference were also significant for activities participation and frequency. Students whose fathers with professional jobs showed in medium or high participation frequency, and those with technical jobs showed in no or low participation. The results from mothers’ job analysis were likewise. 3.The emotional intelligence of grade 5-6 school students were good. The girls perform better than boys, except emotion effectiveness. In light of father’s job, the difference in emotional intelligence of school students were also significant, semi-technical job was the worst. The results from mother’s job analysis were similar on “awareness” and “overall emotional intelligence”. 4.For Boys, the ability ”awareness” were better for sport activities participants than no sports participants. For girls, the ability “emotional effectiveness” for sports activities participants were better than music activities participants and no participants. And, in terms of sports participation, the ability of “responsive”, “emotional effectiveness” and “overall emotional intelligence” for participants were better than no participants. The conclusions of this research were generalized as follows: First of all, more than half of grade 5-6 school students participated in extra curricular activities. Sports activities were popular, it was helpful for the SH150 program recently required by the Ministry of Education, since the emotional intelligence of sport participants were better than others. Secondly, program participation and school students’ emotional intelligence were significantly different according to parents’ jobs. Family styles, economic situation and time distribution are key points to improve activity participation. Finally, from the observation of sport and music activities participation, the strategy of program management stratgy and curricular design concepts would affect students’ participation. The researcher put forward following suggestions: 1.The school could provide multi-dimensional extra curricular activities for students, especially for those students whose parents has different occupations. 2.The administration organizations of education could combined the learning resources to improve the participation of school students. 3.For the future studies, increasing the variety of different socioeconomic research objects were sugguested.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between vocational students’ participation in extra curricular activities and their academic achievements. The methodology used in this study was questionnaire survey. The population of the study was the full time student at vocational high school in Taiwan in 2004. The samples consisted of 1200 students who were selected by disproportional stratified cluster random sampling techniques. The total number of usable sets of instrument was 1003 and the rate of the usable returned was 83.6%. The research instrument was the self developed questionnaire which was revised by scholars and tested by item analysis and faction analysis. The overall Cronbach α was .9472.Based on the statistic analysis and study results, the findings are summarized as follows: 1. The associations students participate in most often are in connection with sports. The associations which students participate have the least interest in are related to volunteer work and academic research. 2. Vocational students only attend club activities in prescribed time. They do not spend extracurricular time on them. 3. There are distinguished differences among this variable— gender, time spent on club activities and the number of activities in a week. 4. In terms of gender, girls take more enthusiastic attitude toward the club activities than boys. In terms of grades, the higher grades students are in, the higher expectations they place on the wishes to be club leaders. 5. Parents’ education background and family economy do not cause any effect on the degree of students’ participation. 6. There are no distinguished differences between parents’ education background and the following factors—moral, academic, practical and physical achievements. 7. There are obvious differences between students’ family economy and their moral, academic and physical achievements. However, family economy doesn’t have notable effect on their interpersonal relations, thinking models, and leisure learning. 8. In terms of the whole achievements, vocational students whose parents possess college degrees have better achievements. 9. This study shows a distinguished correlation between students’ participation in school associations and their academic achievement. The Pearson factor was .780. That is, the more time students are engaged in club activities, the higher academic achievements they have. Based on the study result, some suggestions are proposed to be the reference materials of administrative organizations, schools, teachers, students, and further research.

This study aims to investigate the influence of extracurricular activities (henceforth: EA) on people who are making career choices, specifically for those anticipating the contents of new jobs as the extension of EA. In this study, three qualified participants were invited to share their stories of career as extension of EA, and each narration was recorded via semi-structure questionnaire with in-depth interview. Later, each narration was transcribed and then was analyzed under the “holistic-content” narrative approach. It is discovered that three participants share identical background factors as follows, revealed in the narrative data: (1) They chose a major as to meet social expectations. (2) EAs offer unlimited space for self-exploration. (3) Career exploration is processed unobtrusively and naturally. (4) Career crucially extends from the memories of unforgettable events of extra-curricular activities. The triggers for three participants to choose an extracurricular-activity-extended career are given as follows: (1) EA experiences provide alternatives for career choices. (2) A turning point occurred in EA leads to abandon their original believes and thoughts. (3) Experiences of EA help to develop their life philosophy and perspectives. (4) A brave new choice needs strong supports from behind. It is further found out that participants with fruitful EA experiences possess two major attitudes toward their life and career: (1) They believe that it is the EA experiences that enlighten the core belief of their own. (2) They are satisfied with the current life and job, despite the fact that they are continuingly facing new challenges and difficulties. Finally, this study offer suggestion to student affairs offices, college students, professional helper and further researches and present my reflections.

This work is about a study case which took place in 2008 with basic students. The methodology has a quality approach. The data were the inquiries to students and teachers. The results allowed us to realize that the development of such activities changed the time in children`s lives, it reduced their free time, their family time, their study time, their behavior and school results, found in less concentration and attention. This way students see these activities as an amusement time which they enjoy because of the relationship with his mates, teachers, and clerks, and they which to enclose other activities, mainly in their free time. Their teachers feel they are motivating and interesting, although not in appropriate time. Nominal teachers feel them as a source of better school results, upsetting behaviours but good in developed activities.

Full textOne of the paradigms of information and knowledge society focuses on mobilizing key skills related to the acquisition of reading skills, writing, calculation but especially of reflexivity, or as categorizes António Firmino da Costa (2003), operative skills, selforiented and relational skills. One of the most relevant skills is literacy, by the applicant need of individuals in interpreting written materials in a multiple set of situations in the quotidian, intensified by the emancipation of Information and Communication Technologies. Literacy has been treated in a conceptual and methodological level in order to define the reading skills, writing and numeracy skils, effectively driven by the adult population, in order to resolve problems successfully in everyday life. For Philippe Perrenoud (2003), competence is treated as a process of mobilization or activation of resources- "knowledge, skills, strategies- in various types of situations and especially in problematic situations." There is therefore the link between knowledge, learning and experience on use. The competence approach has penetrated the school fabric through the need to give meaning to learning acquired in school, focusing on practice, the ability to act and action contexts. The Curriculum Additional activities are treated legally and inserted into school curricula as a way of integration contexts that favor the action of the students. They are treated as enriching sources of knowledge and mobilization skills valued by the school, particularly in achieving high academic performance and building a more positive direction in relation to the school. In this way, we intend to understand the types of access to ACC and how they can mobilize the academic performance of students, to the point where they feel more integrated into the school environment. Methodologically it was used a case study at a upper secondary school in the region of Lisbon, achieved through a quantitative research, by applying questionnaire surveys to students to obtain information about the socio-economic statute, the various types of practice in ACC and the degree of satisfaction with the school. The main conclusion was that students that are maintaining an active practice in ACC have high levels of school performance, such as high levels of satisfaction related to various aspects of the school.
