Abstract:
Traditionally, most research in NLP has focused on propositional aspects of meaning. To truly understand language, however, extra-propositional aspects are equally important. Modality and negation typically contribute significantly to these extra-propositional meaning aspects. Although modality and negation have often been neglected by mainstream computational linguistics, interest has grown in recent years, as evidenced by several annotation projects dedicated to these phenomena. Researchers have started to work on modeling factuality, belief and certainty, detecting speculative sentences and hedging, identifying contradictions, and determining the scope of expressions of modality and negation. In this article, we will provide an overview of how modality and negation have been modeled in computational linguistics.

Abstract:
Language is not only from words, but also meaning behind those words. In discourse, there are two components: intra linguistics and extra linguistics. Intra-linguistic component means discourse build from word to word, phrase to phrase, sentences to sentences, paragraph to paragraph at the end it becomes discourse. Extra linguistics competences have some components, settings, purposes, and others component when the text is composed. I will explain how to teach discourse in teaching reading. First, teacher gives questions to open the class; the question should open students' background knowledge about subject at that day. At that stage, teachers should try to raise students' curiosity at that topic. Teachers should ask students opinion about the topic. After that stage, the teacher gives students an up-to-date material close to students' real life. In this stage, students read it by scanning and skimming. The next step, teacher asks students to analyze structure (grammar), vocabulary, and how author developing ideas their composition.

Abstract:
This article examines the interrelated concepts of text and discourse in linguistics, highlighting their distinctive features, theoretical foundations, and methodological approaches. Drawing on definitions from leading scholars—T. A. van Dijk, V. E. Chernyavskaya, A. A. Kibrik, V. Maas, and N. D. Arutyunova—it delineates discourse as a dynamic, context-bound communicative event encompassing extra-linguistic factors (intonation, gestures, cultural knowledge) that extend beyond the static product that is text. The discussion outlines key parameters of discourse—coherence, extra-linguistic context, and communicative purpose—and contrasts two principal research orientations: text analysis (structural units) and discourse analysis (participants, goals, context). It surveys major analytical frameworks including systemic-functional grammar, pragmatic macro- and micro-structures, conversation analysis, cognitive models, and critical discourse analysis. The article also reviews contributions from Uzbek linguistics, illustrating how scholars integrate these global theories within local research on dialogic interaction, corpus methods, and socio-pragmatic dimensions. By synthesizing diverse perspectives, the study underscores discourse as a multifaceted phenomenon essential for understanding language as both process and product, and for exploring how linguistic activity reflects and shapes cognition, society, and culture.

Taking into account recent data on linguistics of production and comprehension in aphasia, a protocol was executed including the several types of implicatures. The protocol was applied to 90 subjects classified according to the localization of cerebral lesions, as shown by CT. Results are discussed in report to clinical manifestations of brain lesions, as aphasia, apraxia, agnosia, and intelligence and pragmatics disturbances. Discussion supports the impression that there is a mechanism that correlates extra-linguistics contexts with the 'said' at the right hemisphere.

Gamification, the use of game-based principles to promote learning (Kapp 2012), allows instructors a pathway through which they can maintain curricular rigor while simultaneously fostering strong work habits and soft skill development. In this paper I describe my own experience of gamifying an online linguistics undergraduate course as I sought to combat engagement challenges such as spotty attendance and assignment procrastination. By implementing a gamified bonus level in the course, I was able to reimagine the traditional notion of extra credit in a way that incentivized self-regulation and engagement without creating a high amount of grade inflation in the process. Unlike traditional extra credit which advantages high-performing students, the bonus level sought to provide equity to the lower-performing students at a regional university with a predominant first-generation population.

Abstract:
Text Linguistics and Textuality
In this article, it is a question of textual linguistics. Meanwhile, first are numerous theoretical works on textual linguistics. This will help us to define and characterize their particularities. It is therefore advisable to give a slightly broader overview of the terms and concepts of textual linguistics. In this article we want to deal more systematically and in more details with the text sentence. We will clarify the question of what a text is and what features characterize texts. We will first consider the concept of textuality, the criteria are also described. Next, we deal with the terms text type and text typology. After presenting some basic notions of text linguistics, let's try to summarize the main points of this article. As a young discipline, text linguistics belongs to applied linguistics. The article focuses then upon theoretical considerations on text linguistics, i.e. basic concepts, points of view of linguists. In doing so, we focus on textuality criteria, which play an extremely important role in text analysis. So here lies the presentation of textuality criteria, so that we rely on some well-known linguists, notably Beaugrande&Dressler (1981) who, in their influential Introduction to Textual Linguistics, have proposed a text definition in which they classify texts using seven criteria from the so called non-texts. Texts are situational and culturally shaped acts of communication that have both extra-linguistic and intra- linguistic characteristics. These are closely related. Text types are also considered in this work. Accordingly, it could be stated that text linguistics has emerged as a modern scientific discipline in order to capture and describe the subject of study "text" in its content and formal aspects, but also shown the difficulty of an exact concept of text type, especially in the pre- theoretical use of this term.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper investigates how pragmatics can be deployed to interpret non-standard usages in the context of the English language users. There are two important linguistics keys to interpreting meanings in English: pragmatics and grammatical competence. For effective communication, a decoder must be competent at the two levels. Many researchers in Nigeria have agreed that, Nigerian English has come to stay, therefore, we need to look beyond the grammatical rules and deploy a method of interpreting non-standard usages in the messages of these people. Decoding a message does not rely only on the linguistics or signs, there are extra linguistic properties that help the addressee to infer meanings from the message of the speakers which can be drawn from pragmatics. Pragmatics and grammar work hand in hand to provide meanings during an interaction.

Abstract We review some of the main goals of theoretical linguistics in the tradition of Generative Grammar: description, evolvability and learnability. We evaluate recent efforts to address these goals, culminating with the Minimalist Program. We suggest that the most prominent versions of the Minimalist Program represent just one possible approach to addressing these goals, and not a particularly illuminating one in many respects. Some desirable features of an alternative minimalist theory are the dissociation between syntax and linear order, the emphasis on representational economy (i.e. Simpler Syntax) and an extra-grammatical account of non-local constraints (e.g. islands). We conclude with the outline of an alternative minimalist perspective that we believe points to more satisfactory accounts of the observed phenomena.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the effects of environmental degradation on humanity, linguistics, knowledge, and culture. This study employs a tripartite theoretical framework to analyze L?mnso’ proverbs: Structural Linguistics, Semiology, and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Basing its analysis on thirty-nine L?mnso’ proverbs, the study rigorously demonstrates that the extra-linguistic and sociological variables in the data contribute to the process of signification—or meaning generation—in language at both denotative and connotative levels. The paper reveals that geographical environmental degradation has devastating consequences for humanity, linguistics, knowledge, and culture. It argues that environmental degradation is a long-standing concept in African societies, particularly in the Nso’ community, dating back as far as the Nso’ people, their language (L?mnso’), and their culture. Furthermore, by presenting fresh and reliable evidence, the study establishes that language is intrinsically linked to environment, knowledge, and culture. Its key contributions include: 1. Highlighting a previously neglected aspect of linguistic studies—the relevance of geographical environment to meaning generation and effective communication. 2. Proposing that game reserves and forest reserves should serve not only as touristic sites but also as knowledge-based, linguistic, and cultural laboratories.

Abstract:
This study considers the effects of deictics, which are among the expressions called, in recent linguistics, and particularly cognitive pragmatics, ‘procedural’ expressions, in poetic expression in the first person. It examines a variety of examples drawn primarily from the early modern period (Scève, Ronsard, Du Bellay, Muret's and Belleau's commentaries on Ronsard), but with several modern points of comparison (Keats, Mallarmé). The article studies, in particular, the question of extra-textual reference in poetry and poetic commentary, arguing against an anachronistic understanding (based in nineteenth- and twentieth-century ideas about authorship) of the forms of early modern poetic reference and of the varieties of first-person action early modern poetry can instantiate.

Abstract Agreement is among the most widely-researched issues in theoretical linguistics. In this introduction, we critically review some of the key issues, focussing on typological approaches to agreement, the role of agreement in establishing and maintaining reference, and the emergence of agreement diachronically. We point to the interplay of semantic, pragmatic and syntactic factors in shaping the way agreement systems function, and emphasize the need for more usage-based research in understanding the impact of extra-syntactic factors. We also argue for greater attention to lesser-researched languages, particularly those where features other than person are central in agreement relations. Finally, we offer a short synopsis of the contributions to this issue.

The phenomenon of gemstone or in Indonesia known as “batu akik” happened greatly in the early to the middle of 2015 and has become attention among the people in Indonesia. Although it cannot be identified precisely when the phenomenon of people massively wearing and collecting gemstones has begun, this study aims to present an early review of this phenomenon seeing from linguistics study. This study revealed three linguistics points regarding to this phenomenon. First, from several vocabulary of “batu”, most of them have the same phonetic form, that is [batu]. Second, the variation of “batu” vocabulary experienced changes in bilabial sound from /b/ to become /w/; extra aspirated voice [Bh] in phoneme [b]; and bilabial phoneme /b/ becomes dorsa velar /k/. Third, this study reveals that people’s interest in wearing and collecting gemstone all over Indonesia happened as the result of cultural similarity which lies in vocabulary “batu” that exists almost in all tribes, regions, and cities in Indonesia. Keywords: gemstone, local language, linguistic comparison

The study is conducted on the basis of the theory of linguistic culture and focuses on the interrelation between language and culture. The author emphasizes the significance of extra-linguistic factors in coining new phraseological units, which are viewed as translators of the national linguistic picture of the world. The article also examines lexical and stylistic features of phraseological units with a “Sea” component in English. The research reveals national and cultural traits reflected in phraseological units of this kind. The article is dedicated to the perspectives on the development of contemporary English phraseology, some phraseology studies implemented by modern linguists are analyzed. New tendencies, such as cognitive linguistics, and comparative and typological research of English phraseology, are described in the article. The trends mentioned above are quite up-to-date for contemporary linguistics and are aimed at solving language as well as human cognition problems.

Rezetko and Young’s Historical linguistics and Biblical Hebrew: steps toward an integrated approach brings variation analysis to bear on the question of the periodisation of Biblical Hebrew. However, this methodology is at best microdiachronic, dealing with variation in synchronic terms. In order to answer the question they pose, a language with a history as long as Biblical Hebrew requires macrodiachronic techniques which look at real linguistic processes. Several such processes are discussed in this paper, and though they collectively converge in pointing to a late date for Qoheleth, they are insufficient to establish a linguistically-based entity “Late Biblical Hebrew”. At the present time, one can at best apply this term in a non-linguistic sense to the Hebrew of those books known on extra-linguistic grounds to have been chronologically late.

Abstract:
Abstract The article presents a Preliminary Pragmatic Model (PPM) with the practical levels of pragmatic features. Poetry translation pose great difficulty in retaining the ‘extra-linguistic features’ of the source text and target text. When placing more emphasis on linguistic features, ‘extra-linguistics’ are ignored by the evaluators. This lack is largely due to the non authentication of pragmatics of the languages involved and the non-development of ‘extra-linguistic’ parameters for evaluation. Focusing on this fact, the study takes pragmatic as the common denominator between poetry and translation, and develops a pragmatic model. The model adopts the concept and objective from the prominent Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) model of Juliane House, and the two models of Hossein Vahid Dastjerdi and his team: (a) Practical Model for Translation Analysis and Assessment of Poetic Discourse, and (b) Semiotic Model for Poetry Translation. The model is an extended part of Vahid’s model with pragmatic (features) layering. The article is prefaced with a brief description of the pragmatic features and functions to explain how and why it matters to compare poetry translation. Later, the effectiveness of the model is tested with a randomly-selected short poem by Gulzar and its English translation by Nirupama Dutt. Gulzar is an Indian poet writing in Hindustani (a mix of Hindi and Urdu). Versing mostly in free style, he makes his poems pragmatically poignant with unusual imagery. Evaluating his poems through the model verifies its working. The findings (tabulated, compared, and discussed) show literal translation of metaphors that becomes displaced as well as losing the sense in the poem. Thus, the translation misses the pragmatic force of Gulzar’s philosophy and does not achieve dynamic equivalence. The study recommends the application of pragmatic procedure for evaluation of poetry translation and offer new possibilities in translation research.

This article addresses the issue of developing and using students’ workshops in English. In the article, such workshops are defined as the fullest form of peer-teaching in which one or several students (workshop organizers) guide their group-mates in performing extra-linguistic learning activities conducted in the target language. The research describes workshops as one of the most efficient ways of involuntary (subconscious) target language acquisition achieved through extra-linguistic practical (experiential) activities performed by way of communication in the language to be learned. The article reports the results of a comparative experimental study in which students of a non-linguistic major (Psychology) and students majoring in English as a foreign language on which their career option (Applied Linguistics) is based were practicing workshops in English in their mandatory classes on that language. The results of the experimental study clearly demonstrate and prove that workshop practice was quite successful in both cases not only in what concerns the involuntary (subconscious) development of learners’ target language communication skills. No less evident was the development of some of the students’ psychological qualities (emotional intelligence) important for their further studies and professional careers.

Combining folk linguistics and feminist theories, the study utilises interview and survey data for content analysis. The study finds that the main characteristics of speech viewed as “gay” – e.g. high pitch, atypical intonation patterns, nasality, non-canonical /s/ quality, use of affective adjectives – align with the speech stereotypes associated with girls and young women. The article suggests that, even though the attitudes explicitly communicated by the participants are mostly neutral, the language features associated with gay men show a strong relation to extra-linguistic gay stereotypes.

Research is based on the perspectives of linguist Nihad Al-Mousa in re-reading the grammatical heritage, with the goal of drawing a true picture of grammatical theory among Arabs for its revival, and its contribution to nourishing the absent modern linguistic lesson, in the context of linguistic theory and global grammar. I've discussed two topics: the depiction of Arabic in American linguistics as it seemed to Nihad, and how he exposed its flaws; and how it overlooked essential components of Arabic linguistic theory that linguistics should be aware of and benefit from. The second is sociolinguistics, that demonstrated extra elements and external factors associated with linguistic content and grammatical structures. The approach evolved as a direct response to the previous approaches, which focuses with Linguistic discours on analyzing structures in their formal (internal), component in the interpretation functional aspect in its external dimension (context), in order to illustrate it in the Arabic language lesson, and to nourish modern linguistic attention to it, believing that the grammatical heritage reveals a deep understanding of the role of language in shaping society.

Classifying toponymic nominations, one must consider the multifaceted (intra- and extra-linguistic) principles of allocation of toponymic units. This article examines the classifications of foreign authors, proposed in various historical periods, personifying views on the problems of typologization of toponyms.

Abstract:
As its title, Semantics: Meaning in Language, indicates the focus of this book is on context-less meaning (“narrow semantics”), for all that the intention is to throw light on issues of language use. Two main approaches are discussed in detail. The first has its origin in the philosophy of language, and is concerned with the extra-linguistic relations between units of language and items in the world; key concepts are reference, denotation and truth. The second originates in linguistics and concentrates on intra-linguistic relations such as antonymy and synonymy. However, at many points the question arises whether these approaches to narrow semantics need to be supplemented by pragmatics.

Abstract:
The study of evaluation, affect, and subjectivity is a multidisciplinary enterprise, including sociology, psychology, economics, linguistics, and computer science. A number of excellent computational linguistics and linguistic surveys of the field exist. Most surveys, however, do not bring the two disciplines together to show how methods from linguistics can benefit computational sentiment analysis systems. In this survey, we show how incorporating linguistic insights, discourse information, and other contextual phenomena, in combination with the statistical exploitation of data, can result in an improvement over approaches that take advantage of only one of these perspectives. We first provide a comprehensive introduction to evaluative language from both a linguistic and computational perspective. We then argue that the standard computational definition of the concept of evaluative language neglects the dynamic nature of evaluation, in which the interpretation of a given evaluation depends on linguistic and extra-linguistic contextual factors. We thus propose a dynamic definition that incorporates update functions. The update functions allow for different contextual aspects to be incorporated into the calculation of sentiment for evaluative words or expressions, and can be applied at all levels of discourse. We explore each level and highlight which linguistic aspects contribute to accurate extraction of sentiment. We end the review by outlining what we believe the future directions of sentiment analysis are, and the role that discourse and contextual information need to play.

Mediante los resultados del análisis de 20 documentos del siglo XVI, este artículo muestra que la unión y separación de palabras en la escritura no sólo se debe a los tipos de letra utilizados en su época, sino a marcadas influencias lingüísticas, principalmente fonológicas. Proponemos aquí que en la escritura del español novohispano convergieron por igual motivaciones lingüísticas como extralingüísticas. Through the results of the analysis of 20 documents of 16th Century, this article shows that union and separation of words is not only due to the kind of writing used in that time, but due to remarkable linguistics influences, phonological ones mainly. We propose that in writing in Spanish from that age linguistic and extra linguistic influences converged.

Within the framework of this approach linguistics and jurisprudence become equivalent and equal factors in building a concise picture of the target subject — the system of the legal concepts and legal terminology of a foreign language. In the opinion of the authors this should be viewed as an important didactic goal of international lawyer training, i.e. training a professional who is not only able to fluently use foreign terminology, but, having thoroughly understood the respective extra lingual realia, contribute to a true dialogue of cultures vital to modern social interaction.

Comparisons of dictionary meanings use the lens of semantic-lexical relationships. Analysis of relationships between dictionary meanings and the socio-religious situation considers extra-linguistics factors, including the dictionary users’ profile. Positively verified consistency between the dictionary meaning and the Greek socio-religious situation will mean that the monolingual dictionary preserves and shapes the status of a specific religion in Greek society.

Abstract:
Abstract Forensic Phonetics is an important application of Linguistics that has emerged as a discipline over the last decade. This paper describes a Forensic Phonetic experiment which investigates the nature of within- and between-speaker variation in the acoustic characteristics of the word hello in demonstrably similar-sounding voices. The nature of within-segment variation is determined in repeats of the same word said under different prosodic conditions in order to exclude as much of the linguistically determined variation as is consistent with the realities of the forensic situation, thus providing a good estimate of variation associated with speakers. Intonationally varying tokens of the naturally produced single word utterance hello from six adult Australian males are compared with respect to fundamental frequency, and to centre frequencies and bandwidths of the F-pattern below 5 KHz. This comprises the first five formants and extra resonances, including a possible singer’s formant and tracheal resonance. Results show that between-speaker acoustic differences are pervasive, though not ubiquitous. Magnitudes of between-speaker differences are presented for all parameters, and their forensic significance evaluated. ANOVA and chi-square tests show that even similar-sounding voices differ significantly in their acoustics, especially centre frequencies of F2-F4, formant bandwidth, and incidence of extra resonances. Simulated forensic conditions show that some of these differences are not realistically demonstrable. Nevertheless, there remain sufficient significant differences to distinguish 13 out of 15 pairs: a value of 13% for the denominator of the associated Bayesian Likelihood Ratio for the prosecution hypothesis. Directions for future research are indicated.

Abstract:
There remains to be a scarcity of pragmatic studies that rely on analysis tools in the literary dimension. It is also deemed not too important to relate the linguistics field to understanding the beauty and metaphoric meanings in the literature. This study describes the metaphors in emotive phrases from a pragmatic stylistic standpoint and their pragmatic connotations. This study identified symbolic utterances of a novel's emotive terms. Thus, this study relied on novel excerpts with metaphorical emotive word meanings. Sindhunata's Gramedia Pustaka Utama book Anak Bajang Menggiring Angin provided source data. The data were collected by observation and then analyzed using distributional analysis. The extralinguistic dimensions of this study were analyzed via a contextual method, especially the extra-lingual equivalent method. This study found anthropomorphic, abstract, and animal imagery analogies. The collected data shows that metaphors have four pragmatic meanings: connotative, emotive, introspective, and collocative. Understanding these meanings is not just confined to a purely literary perspective, as literature and language are like two-sided coins; one field cannot be separated from the other. So, there will be more literary studies with an interdisciplinary perspective on literature and linguistics in the future.

Abstract This article adopts an interdisciplinary approach to integrate insights from cognitive psychology and Cognitive Linguistics into translational inquiry by modeling the translator’s operations as alternating between System 1 and System 2 thinking. We analyze trainee output to investigate translatorial decision-making in scenarios employing instances of basic cross-linguistic asymmetry in the partitioning of conceptual material. The objective is to better understand the role that automaticity plays in those contexts: how pronounced it is, how it influences translation output, and to what extent the skill of monitoring it can be regarded a component of translation competence. The study also tests, in one condition, whether the translator trainer can induce System 2 processing in trainees by issuing extra pre-task instruction, thereby helping optimize their performance.

The cultureme is a concept that could encapsulate the great subtlety of traductologyrelated issues. A complex concept, the cultureme stems from the variety of phenomena and realities it designates. It features in the metalanguage of translation theorists and translators, derived from the need to reconsider, from the perspective of translation theories, certain aspects traditionally researched and studied by linguistics (such as connotations, semantic fields, etc.) in order to shape the critical apparatus appropriate to this process. Since they refer to an extra-linguistic context, to a situation, culturemes can be historical, cultural, literary, etc. The stake of this article is to demonstrate the existence and functioning of the linguistic culturemes, illustrated in the paper, with examples from grammatical categories specific to the Slavonic languages.

Abstract:
Mech (Bodo) is one of the regional Bodo dialects and it falls under the group of Western Bodo Dialect. The dialect is mainly spoken in Darjeeling, AlipurDooars, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts of North Bengal of West Bengal (India). As a dialect, it has been maintaining some linguistic variety in different levels of linguistics. This variety can be displayed by comparing with standard form of Bodo spoken in Kokrajhar district and its adjacent areas of Assam, India. There are some examples in Mech, where extra sounds are found inserted in the beginning of words without changing the structure of word and the meaning. For example, the word ɔkha (rain) of standard Bodo is termed as nɔkha (rain) in Mech. Here, an extra sound nasal alveolar voiced consonant /n/ has been inserted in the beginning of word in Mech. Likewise, some examples of elision are also present in this dialect. For example, the word barsin (jump upon) used in standard Bodo is termed as basin (jump upon) in Mech. In this example, trill alveolar voiced consonant phoneme /r/ has been found deleted from the medial position of word. The main purpose of this paper is to observe and show up the prothesis and Elision present in Mech Dialect.

The purpose of this article is to describe creative transformations of fixed expressions found in “Szkło kontaktowe” broadcast on the TVN24 information channel. The presented sample of research material, collected in 2020-2022, consists of 20 items. Linguistic analysis of the collected SMS texts included reconstruction of stem strings in investigated phrases. It also aimed at determining types of structural and semantic transformations and analysis of their extra-linguistic context (textological perspective). Description of the material is predominantly based on theoretical assumptions of standard and pragmatic phraseology. Additionally, some tools of cultural linguistics have been applied, particularly elements of reconstruction related to the linguistic picture of the world, which allows for the reconstruction of a fragment of the contemporary social and political reality reflected in the SMS comments of viewers.

Abstract:
This paper introduces my concept of cognitive equivalence (cf. Mandelblit, 1997), an attempt to reconcile elements of Nida’s dynamic equivalence with recent innovations in cognitive linguistics and cognitive psychology, and building on the current focus on translators’ mental processes in translation studies (see e.g. Göpferich et al., 2009, Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, 2010). My approach shares its general impetus with Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk’s concept of re-conceptualization, but is independently derived from findings in cognitive linguistics and simulation theory (see e.g. Langacker, 2008; Feldman, 2006; Barsalou, 1999; Zwaan, 2004). Against this background, I propose a model of translation processing focused on the internal simulation of reader reception and the calibration of these simulations to achieve similarity between ST and TT impact. The concept of cognitive equivalence is exemplarily tested by exploring a conceptual / lexical field (MALE BALDNESS) through the way that English, German and Japanese lexical items in this field are linked to matching visual-conceptual representations by native speaker informants. The visual data gathered via this empirical method can be used to effectively triangulate the linguistic items involved, enabling an extra-linguistic comparison across languages. Results show that there is a reassuring level of inter-informant agreement within languages, but that the conceptual domain for BALDNESS is linguistically structured in systematically different ways across languages. The findings are interpreted as strengthening the call for a cognition-focused, embodied approach to translation.

AbstractThe visual social semiotic approach, based on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics (SFL), is widely used in studies on multimodal texts. As SFL is a framework focusing on the functions of language, several SFL categories are re-conceptualized in visual social semiotics to handle the analysis and interplay of extra-linguistic features; other categories, however, are excluded. A consequence is that any insights offered by these excluded categories in multimodal texts remain obscured. This paper focused on one such category, theme, as a generator of expectations. It analyzed the thematic structure of twenty homepages to show that the different SFL themes are applicable and evident in such multimodal texts. It underscores the importance of theme as a point of departure of any discourse, textual or otherwise, allowing us to form expectations about how the rest of the discourse may be acceptably developed.

Abstract:
The personal names of Poles in the far Eastern Borderlands is an issue relatively underexplored in onomastics. The anthroponymy of the inhabitants of Latgale developed in complicated historical, socio-political, and cultural-linguistics circumstances, so describing the functioning of onymic units, mainly from the perspective of determining their origin, requires special caution. These assumptions of an intra- and extra-linguistic nature became the starting point for the analysis of source material taken from Daugavpils’ house residents registration books from 1945–1991. With regard to place-based surnames with the suffix -ski/-ska (-skiĭ/-skaia) and its variants, the emphasis is put on the etymological aspect and the recorded linguistic forms. Apart from the typical difficulties associated with the interpretation of this type of surnames, other circumstances should also be taken under careful scrutiny when examining the Daugavpils’ material. These include: 1) equal consideration of place names (as potential etymons) from the entire area of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, 2) establishing correlations between surnames and toponyms – phonetically similar, but with different linguistics features, caused by the influence of Polish, East Slavic languages, and the Northern Borderland dialect, 3) paying special attention to the alternation of forms resulting from the russification of surnames and the influence of local linguistic peculiarities and idiolectal factors.

Abstract:
Extra-terrestrial beings always have the potential to alter ‘the world as we know it.’ Whenever they appear in film or television, there is a debate about the possibility that we have, as human beings, to communicate with them. Linguistics and semiotics become keyelements in our attempt to bridge the cultural gap. Be it through mathematics, music or technological gadgets, these films only mimic the uncertainty that arises from all types of interculturalcontact. The fear is always the misinterpretation that can turn a ‘We come in peace’ into a fully-fledged war.
This article starts from a general review of 138 films from the decade 2007-2017 to recognize the main points present in their narrative, which shows that hostile conflict remains the main theme. Then it provides an interpretive analysis of the films to describe the type of communication fears that exist incontemporary films, taking a special look at Avatar (Cameron, 2009), Arrival (Villeneuve, 2016) and District 9 (Blomkamp, 2009) as the main representations of our current understanding of communication difficulties. The humanization of extra-terrestrial beings to establish communication with them becomes an inverse representation of the dehumanization of the other, the enemy, as depicted by certain sectors of society and a few recently elected governments, with whom it is difficult to establish mechanisms of communication and dialogue.

Abstract:
Summary:The current paper investigates the three-dimensional meaning potential of the Late Latin narrative tenses. The grammatical categories ‘tense’ and ‘aspect’ are hypothesized to express meaning on the three metafunctional levels posited by Systemic Functional Linguistics. Combinations of their ideational and textual dimensions can be used to classify the various ‘traditional labels’ proposed in the literature on the Latin tenses. Interpersonal meaning, however, gives rise to an extra possibility to account for tense usage by referring to a number of perspectives from which the author invites his audience to experience the narrated events. An author like Gregory of Tours may avail himself of these perspectives to influence his audience in taking a stance on the events. The ultimate tense selection depends on a hierarchy of metafunctional considerations the author may have. The current paper also briefly discusses some of the morphological developments reported in the literature on the Latin tense system.

In this Project we try to control our media player using hand gestures with the help of OpenCV and Python. Computer applications require interaction between human and computer. This interaction needs to be unrestricted and it has made it challenging to traditional input devices such as keyboard, mouse, pen etc. Hand gesture is an important component of body languages in linguistics. Human computer interaction becomes easy with the use of the hand as a device. Use of hand gestures to operate machines would make interaction interesting. Gesture recognition has gained a lot of importance. Hand gestures are used to control various applications like windows media player, robot control, gaming etc. Use of gesture makes interaction easy, convenient and does not require any extra device. Vision and audio recognition can be used together. But audio commands may not work in noisy environments.

At the same time, according to the latest trends in linguistics, in the present analysis I have also looked at extra-linguistic aspects (logical, psychological, cognitive, cultural etc). My research reveals that the antonymic opposition in phraseology is not to be overlooked, but, on the contrary, that a lexicographic database of phraseological antonyms becomes a necessity.

Specifically, results reveal that Instagram imagery prioritizes emotional engagement over concrete information, promoting instant gratification and escape through highly positive, visually appealing positive expectations about leisure experiences of passive contemplation and extra-ordinary, peaceful solitary fruition of nature. This emphasis impacts digital literacy and fosters a consumerist mindset within neoliberal societies, highlighting the necessity for a systematic and critical engagement with visual narratives.

The subject of this research is the application of corpora in teaching foreign languages. Prevalence of discursive practices and in-depth study of discourse marked the emergence of studies with cognitive-corpus focus; therefore, we are currently witnessing global coverage of corpus linguistics – both, substantively and methodologically – various professional and scientific zones in the area of humanistic research and other. The authors touch upon the question on the role and place of corpus linguistics in modern science, and support an opinion that corpus linguistics is meant to become a foundation for the new cognitive in its essence linguistic theory. The research methodology is structure on the interaction of such modern approaches as corpus-based and corpus-driven. Using these methods, the students take on the role of researcher-experimentalists, by means of corpora and in the process of performing specifically developed corpus-based tasks, conduct their own minor linguistic research. The authors’ special contribution consists in substantiation and generalization of theoretical experience of the forerunners in light of analysis of the direct and indirect application of corpora not only in teaching source language, but also computer linguodidactics; as well as description of such application from the perspectives of corpus-driven and corpus-based approaches for their future implementation into the educational process.
