Abstract:
For the first time in world practice, the monograph examines topical issues of physico-chemical treatment of man-made waters using combined flotation equipment, including flotation combines for various purposes. Much attention is paid to the extraction of metals from man-made waters. The basics of ion flotation used to extract valuable metal ions are considered in sufficient detail. It is shown that the use of flotation combines makes it possible to significantly increase the extraction of various pollutants from man-made waters, and with reduced energy and material costs. Local content policies for extractive industries have attracted increased interest. Local content requirements are often included in legislation or contracts. Such efforts may be constrained by low capacity of potential suppliers, low skills, and the general business environment. A number of extractive industry companies have introduced supplier development programmes that attempt to reduce the constraints and skill gaps. Government industrial policies on local content vary: some prescribe quantitative targets for local content, while others focus on improving skills and raising the capacity o

Although neuraxial analgesia is available to the majority of parturients in developed countries, alternative neural blocks for labour analgesia are needed for medical, individual, and institutional reasons. Paracervical and pudendal blocks are usually administered transvaginally by an obstetrician. An injection of 0.25% bupivacaine using a superficial technique into the lateral fornixes gives rapid pain relief and has been found to have no negative effect on either fetal oxygenation, or maternal and neonatal outcomes. In this chapter, we will present the technical aspects of atomistic spin dynamics, in particular how the method can be implemented in an actual computer software. This involves calculation of effective field and creation of neighbour lists for setting up the geometry of the system of interest as well as choosing a suitable integrator scheme for the SLL (or SLLG) equation. We also give examples of extraction and processing of relevant observables that are common output from simulations. Atomistic spin dynamics simulations could be a computationally heavy tool but it is also very well adapted fo

Media coverage and scholarly research on digital surveillance has focused primarily on the USA and Europe. Everyone knows about Cambridge Analytica’s social media surveillance; Edward Snowden’s revelations of the West’s mass internet and phone surveillance; and Pegasus Spyware’s mobile phone surveillance of activists, journalists, judges, and presidents across the world. Comparatively little is known about the millions of dollars now being spent on digital technologies for use in the illegal and illegitimate surveillance of citizens in Africa. This chapter examines Google's aims to dominate the global market for information services and data. Drawing from the suggestion that “information is the new oil of the Internet and the currency of the digital world,” it explores how Google's various endeavors seek to control each facet of the data market: data production, data extraction, data refinement, data infrastructure and distribution, and demand. It shows that there is no equivalent company that has ever been capable of dominance in each facet of the oil economy to the extent that Google leads in the data economy. The chapter also dis

Abstract:
This chapter examines Edmund Burke’s arguments on the Anglo-Indian trade and the British rule in Bengal. In contrast to the culturalist interpretations of Burke’s position on the British Empire, the chapter brings Burke’s political economic writings to bear on his efforts to maintain the empire in India while expunging its illiberal economic aspects. Behind Burke’s attempt to reform the Indian administration and impeach Warren Hastings, it is argued, was the East India Company’s systematic violation of the liberal economic principles that defined the British character as a commercial society.

How did Europeans achieve global dominance and continue to satisfy their ever-growing needs? How do we explain the effects this has on the rest of the world? In his magnum opus, published here in English for the first time as an open access book, world-renowned critical development scholar Benoit Daviron blends Braudelian history and a food systems approach to show how biomass--as the metabolism of societies and as a source of matter and energy--explains key historical phases of Western capitalist hegemony and the transitions between them. Australia has the third largest marine estate in the world, extending from the tropics to Antarctica and including vast areas of the Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans. We have a good reputation for management of our marine estate but there is still much to understand about how our actions affect the oceans, including through climate change, fishing, resource extraction, shipping, and recreation and tourism.
Our oceans are tremendous resources, culturally, socially and economically, and are repositories for incredible biodiversity. Oceans provide food and energy and influence weather an
