Abstract:
We investigated whether participation in extracurricular sports promotes the life satisfaction of Chinese adolescents and tested the mediating effect of academic stress and the moderating effect of extraversion in this relationship. We conducted a survey with 1,608 Chinese adolescents to assess their participation in extracurricular sports and their levels of extraversion, academic stress, and life satisfaction. The regression analysis results indicate that extracurricular sports participation positively influenced life satisfaction through the mediator of academic stress. The moderated regression analysis results reveal that high extraversion strengthened not only the direct effects of extracurricular sports participation and academic stress but also the indirect effects of extracurricular sports participation and life satisfaction. These findings indicate that participation in extracurricular sports chiefly promoted life satisfaction in Chinese adolescents indirectly by reducing their academic stress, subject to the moderating effect of having an extraverted personality. Thus, increasing the time students spend on participating in extracurricular sports can help to enhance their life satisfaction.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to examine the role of school-based extracurricular initiatives in facilitating immediate and long-term positive impact on physical activity, healthy behavior, and obesity in children. A critique of the role of various sports-related initiatives that have been developed to address the obesity epidemic currently facing children within the United States is provided, with a specific emphasis on intramural sports as a preferred mechanism to encourage long-term involvement in sport and physically active pursuits. The article presents support for the notion that a physical education curriculum that includes intramurals before, during, and after school can help children learn the skills to enjoy participation in a variety of sports designed to facilitate lifelong active living.

Abstract:
Despite the undeniable educational potential of extracurricular sport, the individual and social values attributed to them are not inherent in its practice. It is educators, whose attitudes, disposition and personal vision of extracurricular sport determine how it is implemented. For this reason, this study analysed the opinions and perceptions of future physical education specialists about the objectives of extracurricular sports, with the aim of identifying the main shortcomings and divergences between theory and practice. Three hundred and twenty-eight students of physical education from three different degree programmes, 104 women and 221 men, aged between 17 and 38 years, were surveyed. Although the majority of students considered socialising, educating in values, inclusion, developing motor skills and promoting healthy habits to be fundamental objectives of extracurricular sport, a high percentage of students recognised the importance of values related to competitiveness. It was also found that the students´ academic training was associated with their view of extracurricular sport. A discrepancy between the ideal goals of extracurricular sport and those underlying current practice was perceived by the students. It was concluded that it is essential to improve the training of those agents who interact directly with children in order to transform extracurricular sport to guarantee its contribution to children´s holistic development and a thorough education in values.

Abstract:
Youth sporting activities have been explored as a way to impact positive personal transformation and development, glaringly demonstrated by world-wide investments in public policies, programs, and projects. We studied positive effects of participation in sports on the developmental assets of 614 adolescents (13.1 ± 1.7 years) actively engaged in extracurricular sport programs targeted at socially disadvantaged youths, from five municipalities across five states of the southern, south-eastern and north-eastern regions of Brazil. Participants responded to a developmental assets questionnaire designed to capture sociodemographic and human development data. Multilevel logistic regression was used to explore associations between years of participation in sport and human development indicators, controlling for age and sex. Our results showed that the quality of the young people’s support network and duration of program participation positively influenced sport participation, which, in turn, was associated with willingness to learn. A strong association was also observed between sport participation and developmental assets. Thus, we offer new evidence of a relationship between positive development and environmental factors in which individual and contextual forces can be aligned, and we provide new reference data for developing countries.

Abstract:
This study investigated whether parental participation in organized and unorganized physical activity (PA) was associated with children’s participation in extracurricular sport. The sample comprised 834 parents and their children (aged 6–10 years), living in central Portugal. Questionnaires assessed parental PA (organized and unorganized) and extracurricular sport participation in children (number of sports and frequency of participation). Multinomial logistic regression was applied to assess associations between parental and child physical behaviors. Having both parents active was significantly associated with frequent participation in more sports both in girls and boys but a strong relation according to gender was found. The odds of boys practicing more than one sport and more times per week were higher if they had an active father. Girls with physically active mothers, particularly with mothers practicing organized PA in a regular way, were engaged in more sports and practiced sport more times per week. The type of PA practiced by the parents was not related to boys’ participation in sport. Future interventions should be family-based and focus on the promotion of higher levels of parental PA, including organized, in order to improve their children’s active behaviors.

Abstract:
Studies of the effects of students playing sports in high school vary but results are mostly positive. This qualitative case study examined the perceptions of 15 teachers at a small rural Iowa high school to assess how they viewed the effects of sports participation on student athletes in the classroom and why the setting experienced a decline in participation numbers. The framework that drove this study was based on Pajares's concept that teacher expectations may influence students and their academic performance and behaviors. The data included individual interviews from 15 teachers and teacher/coaches who had a minimum of 5 years teaching experience and had student athletes in their classrooms. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed for emergent themes. Findings revealed that increased academic performance, learned leadership traits, and teamwork were the perceived benefits to sports participation. Missed class time and stressful time requirements on student athletes were the perceived detriments. Findings also indicated that a need for more cohesiveness better and communication between teachers and teacher/coaches, and a need for higher eligibility standards for student athletes to participate in athletics. These findings were used to develop a policy recommendation project that will update and overhaul the district's current athletic eligibility policy. This project will enable more students to participate in athletics and remain eligible for sports participation and additional tutoring. Social change could result from increased participation in athletics, improved academic performance, and greater cohesion among teachers at the school.

Abstract:
Up to now, Artistic Gymnastics (AG) was a sport only known and practiced by only a small minority of Brazilians, this situation has been changing by the popularity of our athletes in international Olympics. Knowledge and understanding of motivation in AG may help professionals to develop a better and more stimulating program and make this experience even more meaningful and joyful to the learners, minimize dropouts and increase the popularity of this activity. We interviewed coaches and their female students ageing from 11 to 17 years and we analyzed the girls motivation to practice AG in the schools and the strategy used by coaches to stimulate and to maintain their interest. We verified that there are many reasons that work for the starting and remaining in this particular sport, which may have an intrinsic or extrinsic origins. Motivational strategies used by coaches were relatively effective. However, we suggest that the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors would be considered and the coach-practitioner communication be intensified in order to meet the needs and expectations of the learners

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyse the meaning attributed to practice, described by Futsal Coaches involved in the extracurricular environment of private schools in the city of Ribeirão Preto - SP. It is estimated that in Brazil about 20 million people practice futsal on unofficial way and about 300 thousand athletes play futsal with some kind of formal link to sport institutions. The option of investigate coaches was due to their relevance, because they occupy a central role in the process of sports training. The Grounded Theory, which is a qualitative research methodology, was applied for the analysis of responses of semi-structured interviews with seven futsal coaches on private high schools extracurricular sport activities. The results indicated that coaches justify different goals when teaching futsal: to teach values, to stimulate the development of a students sports culture, to stimulate the pursuit of a sports career and the formation of competitive teams capable of winning formal games and scholar tournaments. The results also indicated that the coaches agency are influenced by the hegemonic model of high performance sports. The modus operandi described by them to select students for the formal competition games, the valorisation of the victory, and the behaviour in the bench, closely resemble the one observed in the environment of the high-performance sports. Therefore, it was observed a predominance of the use of the official meaning of sports practice reproduced in the school extracurricular environment. Such reproduction is causing unequal participation of students in formal school games and tournaments. It was concluded that this extracurricular school environment of sports practices needs to undergo a process of resignification, to favour a larger participation of all students who are interested in some sports

Also limited is an understanding of the different types of extracurricular participation and how various activities may manifest within the relationship. The purpose of this study was to examine the link between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment, with social capital, parental expectations, and academic achievement presented as mediators. Additionally, the present study will explore socioeconomic differences in the proposed relationships. The sample consisted of 5,239 ninth through twelfth graders from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple-group SEM were used to test pathways. Extracurricular participation was categorized into sports participation, non-sport participation, mixed participation (including both sport and non-sport), and no participation. Social capital, a latent factor, was measured by the latent variables of family and school capital. Various indicators of family closeness and inclusion of school culture from survey items operationalize social capital. Parental expectations, another latent factor, was measured by one survey indicator using the question of how disappointed would your resident father and mother be if you did not graduate from college. Academic achievement was measured by grade point average and calculated by the average of self-reported grades in four subjects: English, math, social studies, and science. Educational level attained used seven levels ranging from less than 8th grade to beyond a Bachelor degree. Gender, race, and parent education were also included as covariates. Social capital, parental expectations, and high school academic achievement were all shown to be mediators between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment. However, social capital's impact on educational attainment was indirect through GPA rather than direct. Sport showed better capacity to strengthen social capital than non-sport. However, non-sport participants achieved higher high school GPA than sport participants. On average, students involved in both sport and non-sport activities had more positive effects on all model variables than students involved in sports only. Results for socioeconomic comparison showed some evidence for the benefit of sport participation directly on educational level for low-income students. Practically speaking, the conclusion of the study is that students need to participate in a combination of activities that include both sport and non-sport to improve their chances of educational attainment.

Abstract:
Extracurricular activities are a cornerstone of the successful application to study medicine. Competitor candidates will all have the same impeccable grades and when it comes to differentiating between academically qualified candidates, admissions committees will always defer to those with diverse and interesting extracurricular interests. This chapter is dedicated to extracurricular options available to the applicant, including sports and music, uniformed youth groups, school activities, and community projects. It highlights the invaluable and relevant skills that participation in such activities can help develop. The chapter also offers advice to applicants on how they should choose where to spend the time they’re not using to study.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 investigates the previously unexplored history of extracurricular youth mobilization among the Vojvodina’s ethnic Germans during the interwar period. It traces the many specifically “German” youth organizations that flourished as Yugoslav German cultural organizations like the Kulturbund, local pro-Reich Erneuerer, Third Reich teachers, Hitler Youth agents, Yugoslav sports groups, and both local and “reichsdeutsche” Catholic and Protestant agencies entered the youth mobilization race, attempting to imbue young Donauschwaben with specific notions of “Germanness.” As the chapter indicates, the initial organizational plurality and relative indifference to exclusivist national causes “from below” shifted towards the late 1930s: by 1940, over 90 percent of Yugoslavia’s young Donauschwaben had joined the local pro-Nazi Deutsche Jugend, creating a formidable army of potential home and battle front recruits ready and willing to fight for Hitler’s Reich.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews various conceptualizations of problematic Internet use and Internet addiction, patterns of use, and related therapeutic interventions. Youth are vulnerable to engaging in problematic Internet behavior. The term “Internet addiction” is often used to describe extreme instances of such behavior, but there is a lack of consensus on its definition and assessment. This chapter presents survey data from a sample of 629 U.S. adolescents that was used to examine various social, parental, and health-related correlates of problematic Internet use. Findings indicated that heavy Internet use was associated with increased stress and socializing with friends, and negatively related to parental monitoring and participating in sports and other extracurricular activities. Although correlational, these data indicate that youth who engage in problematic Internet use have a less favorable home and school environment.

Abstract:
This book calls for a revolution on today’s campus in curriculum (more humanities), in teaching methods (more independence for students), and in extracurricular activities (more opportunities for leadership). This chapter makes six recommendations to colleges, and one to college parents. First, bring the goals of students and faculty into alignment. Second, recognize that every teacher teaches ethics. Third, stop teaching altogether if your teaching style makes students passive. Fourth, replace professionally coached teams as much as possible with student sports clubs, and let the students hire their own coaches. Fifth, give students time for extra-curricular activities. Groups that discriminate by race or sex should be discouraged. Sixth (which sums up the first five), trust students to make good decisions for themselves. Finally, parents should let their college-age children grow up.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 shows how campus geographies expose students to different models of success (or not) and shape their strategies for attaining that success. Play Hard students learn early not to prioritize academic outcomes above friendships and social life but rather to focus on building powerful networks with more affluent friends through parties, team sports, and Greek Life. Work Hard students, by contrast, remain in more class-segregated spaces, meaning they have less exposure to peers with upper-class habituses. They prioritize building their formal resume, connections with faculty, and having high grade point averages, which guide their decisions both academically and in terms of the kinds of extracurricular opportunities they seek out. Multisphere students rely on both academic and network strategies and seem to be comfortable navigating each, while Disconnected students struggle to locate a clear and consistent route toward post-college success and plan to rely on themselves.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter summarizes the lessons learned from studying the stories of school desegregation in Mississippi. In organizing the book with separate chapters on black parents, superintendents, principals, and teachers, this study hoped to capture the nuances of how school desegregation was accomplished, fought for, resisted, and doomed in differing ways in different parts of the state. The inclusion of the role of sports, band, the prom, cheerleading, and student government during the school desegregation process is a reminder that educational reformers cannot ignore the importance of the informal curriculum, the hidden curriculum, and the extracurricular of schools. Meanwhile, the chapters on protests and private schools illustrate two primary ways in which people responded to this monumental cultural change that threatened the status quo: they resisted in various ways through conventional methods of protest, and they formed a countermovement that sought to retain the tribalism to which they clung and around which their identities were built.
