Abstract This study addresses the issue of politeness in compliment responses (CRs) among Iranian female university students. Using naturally occurring talk, 235 compliment-response exchanges were recorded during focus group interviews. The findings revealed that to mitigate impoliteness the interviewees displayed five extreme culture-specific politeness strategies as (1) tarof, (2) shekasteh-nafsi, (3) hyperreciprocation, (4) sha’n, and (5) double positive response. In female-female CR exchanges, interviewees attempted to foster a good impression by resorting to politeness strategies of tarof

Speech etiquette, or the order of verbal behavior, expresses respect or politeness in a group and is realized through vocabulary, form, style, intonation, pronunciation, and discourse. The Korean culture of politeness is one of the unique traditional features of Korea and an important characteristic of Korean society. Korean speech etiquette has many generalizations and manners shaped by Confucianism, as Confucian society perceived humility and consideration for others as important values in building social contacts. However, changes in family life in Korea after the 1960s affected the everyda

The Korean language has a complex honorific system that reflects the social dynamics between speakers, listeners, and referents. Korean honorifics include address terms, sentence endings, honorific words, and the subject honorific suffix -‍si‍-. In principle, the suffix -‍si‍- should be used only with human subjects; however, in actual communication, it is often used with non-human subjects. This so-called ‘misuse’ is especially common in service sectors, where businesses aim to show extreme politeness to customers. Abstract In accordance with numerous studies highlighting aspects of political and parliamentary discourse that concern the rhetoric of political combat, verbal attacks and offensive language choices are shown to be rather common in the context of a highly adversarial parliamentary system such as the Greek. In the present study, however, the analysis of excerpts of parliamentary discourse addressed to women reveals not just aspects of the organization of rival political encounters but, as far as female MPs are concerned, aggressive and derogatory forms of speech that directly attack the gender

Abstract In this study we contrast metaphors and metaphorical stories in President Trump’s 2017 inaugural address with those of former President Barack Obama’s first inaugural address. We draw on the concept of ‘rhetorical confinement’ (Patterson, 2011) to show how the contrasting life trajectories of the two leaders are reflected in the contrasting themes and tone established by their metaphorical language. We argue that Obama’s rhetorical tone, including his use of metaphors, was at least in part a response to the compound constraints of race and class. In contrast, Trump’s rhetorical tone a

Most research studies of news assume a bias toward the extreme, the unusual, and the new. However, much of the content of newspapers consists of the routine and the predictable. Using a collection of articles from the New York Times sampled from 1852 to the present, this paper examines news about one subject, national holidays, with a view to explaining the pragmatic functions of such formally unnewsworthy articles. In the national holiday news cycle, the newspaper first announces or forecasts the observances, and after they have taken place the public response is evaluated for enthusiasm and

Badiou’s relationship to Derrida is complex, ambivalent, at times distinctly fraught, and often—despite an impeccable politeness of phrasing—somewhat impatient in tone. All the same it doesn’t exhibit anything like the pattern of routine inter-generational conflict that has characterised so many episodes of post-war French in-tellectual history. Thus it bears no resemblance to those acts of barely concealed parricidal intent by which Sartre ousted the dominant currencies of pre-war (whether rationalist or Bergson-influenced) thought, or the structuralism of Lévi-Strauss, Althusser and company

Abstract This chapter examines the role of honor culture in Alexander Hamilton’s life, shaping his political views, legal practice, and personal conduct. It explains how dueling enforces honor and distinguishes between gentlemen of extreme politeness, like James Madison, and gentlemen of the sword, like Hamilton and Aaron Burr. The chapter traces how honor disputes unfold, detailing the failed negotiations that led to Hamilton’s fatal duel with Burr in 1804. It presents the duel’s setting, sequence, and Hamilton’s decision not to fire at Burr. Finally, the chapter analyzes the duel’s aftermath
