This chapter offers an overview of the book’s concerns, which are centred on the relationship between the tragic protagonist and the listener or onlooker who stands as witness. In Euripides, Phaedra’s anguished disclosure of her feelings to the Nurse, and the Nurse’s troubling reaction to what she hears, veering between extreme horror and too-familiarising rationalisation, are the starting-point for thinking about the difficulty of communicating tragic experience, which by its nature verges on the unspeakable, and so of finding good witness. The concept of good witness is extended to other terms: finding someone to tell one’s story; hospitality to the alien or stranger; and the ‘holding’ of another’s experience epitomised in the mother’s relation to the child, as in object relations theory (esp. Donald Winnicott). The dual obligation both to enter into the extraordinariness of the protagonist’s experience and to ground it in a world shared in common is discussed in relation to the theatrical representation of madness, particularly in Shakespeare, and to the distinctive resources which theatre can bring. Such witness is expressed as a particular kind of grieving, whose relation to adequate representation is glossed with reference to Gillian Rose’s concept of ‘inaugurated mourning’.

This chapter examines Volkhovskii’s early life from his birth in 1846 down to his third arrest in 1874. Volkhovskii was born into a comparatively impoverished noble family in modern-day Ukraine. He was at a young age scarred by seeing the harsh treatment of the serfs on his grandfather’s estate, which prompted his sympathy for the plight of the Russian people, and he was while still a teenager already well-versed in the ideas expressed in radical literature (both legal and illegal). He initially came under police supervision in 1866, in part because of his role in running a student organisation suspected of fostering Ukrainian national sentiment, before being arrested two years later for his part in setting up the Ruble Society that sought to build closer links between the intelligentsia and the peasantry. Volkhovskii was eventually released without charge, but within a few months he was arrested again, in part because he was suspected of having ties to Sergei Nechaev, the enfant terrible of the mid-nineteenth-century Russian revolutionary movement, whose sadism and penchant for melodramatic pronouncements alienated many of his fellow revolutionaries. Volkhovskii was again acquitted, after two years in prison, subsequently moving south to Odessa where he established one of the most active groups that made up the Chaikovskii movement. Volkhovskii’s group was extremely well-organised, insisting on the complete commitment of its members, and directed much of its attention to agitation among urban workers rather than the peasantry. Volkhovskii believed for a short time in the late 1860s that a successful revolution could be brought about by a small group committed to seizing power to bring about social and economic revolution. He was, though, for the most part convinced that real change would only come about through a programme of agitation designed to foment a radical outlook among the Russian narod.

From this point Nāgārjuna’ offers a theory of the relationship between emptiness, dependent origination, and convention and argues not only that these three can be understood as corelative, but that if conventional things (or emptiness itself) were nonempty, the very nihilism with which the reificationist opponent charges Mūlamadhyamakakārikiāwould ensue. This tactic of arguing not only against each extreme but of arguing that the contradictory extremes are in fact mutually entailing is, as we have seen in earlier chapters, a dialectical trademark of Nāgārjuna’;s philosophical method. This chapter discusses the addition of nucleophilic reagents to aldehydes and ketones. In the series formaldehyde–acetaldehyde–acetone, reactivity to nucleophiles decreases in that order. The electronic factor here is deactivating, but slight, because the additional Me groups are not attached directly to the carbonyl carbon. They are largely insulated from it by saturated carbon atoms. The chapter then considers high degrees of hydration at equilibrium, which generally result when the carbonyl group has strong electron-withdrawing substituents attached, and in extreme cases it is the hydrate which is the familiar form of the carbonyl compound. It also looks at hemiacetal and hemiketal formation; cyanohydrin formation; bisulfate addition; the Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley reaction; the Cannizzaro reaction; and reaction with Grignard reagents.
