Learning the skills to be a musician requires an enormous amount of effort and dedication, a long-term process that requires sustained motivation. Motivation for music is complex, blending relatively intrinsic and extrinsic motives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the motivation of musicians by considering how different aspects of motivational features interact. An international sample of 188 musicians was obtained through the use of an online survey. This chapter examines the implications of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for modern education. The historical antecedents of these two distinct motivational sources will be highlighted and their implications discussed within the framework of contemporary education. More specifically, the focus of this chapter is on the importance of fostering motivation among students in modern educational spaces such as: gifted classrooms, inclusive settings, and technology assisted teaching spaces. Deci and Ryan's (2000) Self Determination Theory provides the theoretical lens through which this discussion is framed. Three basic psychological needs have been highlighted and explicated. These psychological needs - competence, autonomy, and relatedness are examined as catalysts that can be used to promote and maintain motivation in modern teaching and learning spaces. Recommendations are advanced on instructional practices that educators can use to create classroom environments that facilitate motivation.

Technology acceptance model (TAM) has been the predominant model for decades to explain how and to what extent motivational factors affect technology use of people. Despite its robustness and validity for the research in educational technologies, TAM has a behaviorist nature, focusing mainly on extrinsic motivators to explain the acceptance of technology. Considering that learning requires cognitive and social immersion as well as behavioral engagement, behaviorist-oriented approach of TAM can only make limited explanation of acceptance of learning technologies. To overcome this shortcoming of TAM, a new model is proposed, the educational technology engagement model (ETEM), based upon the self-determination theory, which basically offers that both extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors affect engagement of students for learning. ETEM identifies cognitive, social, and behavioral engagement along with the perceived achievement as motivational outcomes.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine students' motivation towards Mandarin learning during COVID-19. Theoretically, motivation is considered a broad concept that aims to define why people decide to do something, how long they sustain the activity, and how much effort they will expend to pursue it. Considering that there is no single theory that can comprehensively cover the possible motives, this study investigates the L2 motivation with the self as its core, which is found closely related to three motivation frameworks: Socio-education theory, self-determination theory, and L2 motivational self-system. This study found that L2 learners of Mandarin were highly driven by intrinsic motivation such as knowledge, culture, language learning stimulation, and accomplishment. They were less likely to be motivated by external pressures such as the ought-to L2 self or introjected opinions and showed a highly self-decisive multilingual profile with a willingness to diversify their knowledge and skills. Finally, Mandarin learning had positively contributed to their overall well-being during COVID-19.
