Abstract:
Four giant volumes (plus a companion one on Humble Oil) appeared between 1955 and 1988 on the history of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) and its successor (as of 1972) Exxon Corporation. These well-documented volumes took the story to 1975. As related by the publisher and author of this book, about four years after the 1999 megamerger of Exxon and Mobil and the formation of ExxonMobil, the merged unit gave a collection of its historical files—containing some four million documents—to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History (DBC) at the University of Texas at Austin. When the document transfer was made, in 2003, William Hale, a thirty-year Exxon/ExxonMobil manager (most recently in the public relations department) suggested that it was time for a fifth volume of Exxon history. ExxonMobil's top management approved, and in 2005 the DBC asked Joseph Pratt to write it. He agreed, and the book under review, which covers the period 1973 through the merger to 2005, was written by Pratt “with the assistance of William Hale” and published by DBC.

Abstract:
As a result of Australia’s long-running drought there has been renewed community focus on water as a vital resource. In response to this and as part of ExxonMobil’s environmental performance improvement program, local water conservation teams have been established at multiple ExxonMobil Australia sites in Victoria. This has stimulated an increased focus on water as a precious resource across the entire workforce resulting in additional emphasis on pro-active planning for water conservation. In one initiative, freshwater use at Altona Refinery was reduced by one megalitre per day. This was achieved through multiple initiatives such as optimising use of standby equipment and the frequency of flushing operations. At Long Island Point, an engineering study supported by the water conservation team identified a cost effective means of ensuring that water used in the flare-stacks is synchronised with the volume of gas being processed at the flare-tip. This initiative is on track to reduce site fresh water consumption since late February 2007 by up to 55 megalitres of potable water a year. Since 2001 Longford has successfully reduced water use by 40% from 5 ML a day in 2001 to 3 ML a day in 2006. Similarly, 2006 water usage for Long Island Point was the lowest on record. Now, with water conservation teams firmly established on these and other sites and further projects yet to be implemented, water consumption is set to decline even further. Overall water saving initiatives have been aligned with increased regulatory and community expectations to reduce water usage, driven by the drought conditions.

Abstract:
This work provides financial analysis and comparison of two oil companies: Chevron and ExxonMobil, with bigger accent on practise rather than theory. It could be divided into two main parts: history and financial analysis itself. In the first part history of both oil giant was provided, from the beginning until nowadays. Second part was divided into chapters: single-criterion analysis and multiple-criteria comparison. In single-criterion analysis I applied horizontal and vertical analysis on balance sheet, income statements and cash flows statements of both companies. Then analysis of financial ratios was done: profitability, liquidity, debt, asset management, capital market and work productivity. Moreover, economic value added was calculated. In multiple-criteria comparison method of a simple division and prosperous (Tamari) and bankruptcy models (Z-score and Beerman) were calculated. In conclusion the main and the most significant results and comparison and comments were provided.

Abstract:
Corporation Social Responsibility (CSR) has been growing in its importance, which makescompanies under great pressure with the handling of CSR and making it a useful managerial tool. This thesis tries to answer the questions of whether the E.ON Group, Vestas, ExxonMobil, andthe Shell Corporation are using the appropriate CSR communication strategies, and whether ornot a company’s relative environmental friendliness affects the CSR communication strategy ofsaid company, and was written to increase our understanding of CSR communication as aconcept. We adopted an inductive stance, with a constructionist, interpretivist point of view, andso decided to perform qualitative research by way of a comparative case study. We then collected our data from the corporate websites of the two companies, and analyzed itaccording to Carroll’s CSR pyramid, Morsing’ theories on stakeholder communication strategy, and the theory on credibility as defined by Greek philosopher Aristotle. Once analyzed, wecompared the data gathered from the two companies to each other in order to draw ourconclusions. In the end, we concluded that E.ON’s and Vestas’ CSR communication strategy are quitelacking, while Shell’s and Exxon’s CSR communication strategy are quite the successes. Thisthen actually seems to answer our second question, as Shell, who is leagues less environmentallyfriendly than E.ON, devotes a lot more focus towards their CSR communication measures. Moreover, it is through our study that we have discovered a lack of academic theories or modelguiding for a successful use of CSR communication.

Abstract:
In the absence of a continued military presence in Iraq, the United States must use alternative means to achieve its foreign policy goals. Stated goals include maintaining influence, increasing stability in Iraq, Iran, and the Arabian Peninsula, and ensuring Iraq's territorial integrity. This paper suggests leveraging the power of American oil and gas firms operating in Iraqi Kurdistan given the relative ineffectiveness of the embassy in Baghdad and the hostility many Iraqis exhibit toward American diplomats. It first outlines American policy toward Iraqi Kurdistan from the end of the Gulf War to the present. Next it provides a brief overview of the current state of affairs in Iraqi politics and Iraq's oil and gas industry. Then the paper describes four specific ways in which supporting American oil and gas firms in Iraqi Kurdistan can help the United States achieve its foreign policy goals. First, it can check undue Shi'a centralization of power and keep Iraq from drifting too far into the Iranian sphere. Second, it can strengthen the Kurdish bargaining position with Baghdad and push Iraq toward resolving the status of Kirkuk and enacting a comprehensive hydrocarbons law. Third, oil and gas extraction through profit sharing contracts (PSCs) rather than technical services agreements (TSAs) would promote foreign direct investment and spur economic growth. Finally, private sector oil and gas companies could be a critical component in maintaining American influence with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Government of Iraq (GOI) through their strong local ties. The last chapter is devoted to policy prescriptions for achieving the aforementioned goals.

Marcelino, Joana Andreia Boavida. "Merger and acquisitions : the case of ExxonMobil and Anadarko." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/21037.

Abstract:
The rationale under Merger and Acquisitions (M&A) has a huge spectrum, but it is always assumed to be a way of increasing shareholders value. The recent downturn in the oil and gas (O&G) market has been creating some speculations where M&A arises as a way to join companies that together can be more efficient in handling periods of low prices. In fact, this is a great opportunity for those with solid financial positions to invest in undervalued companies, and thus, strengthen their competitiveness in the future. This dissertation focuses in assessing the potential value added from a deal between ExxonMobil and Anadarko. The former with an integrated business model and a strong balance sheet, and the latter, solely dependent on the upstream segment which means being more exposed to fluctuations in oil prices. Thereafter, an in-depth company and industry analysis is conducted in order to establish which assumptions to apply to the valuation methods. The individual and combined analysis is supported by a literature review on valuation and M&A. Based on a theoretical framework, the merged entity valuation is developed, followed by a proposed price, method of payment and acquisition strategy. Anadarko’s standalone valuation suggests that its average share price during 2015 is undervalued with 13% upside potential. Due to synergies of $33,96Bn, the proposed deal has a premium of 49% and the final suggestion being an all-cash offer.<br>Várias são as razões apontadas para justificar fusões e aquisições, mas todas têm subjacente o pressuposto da criação de valor para os acionistas.

Abstract:
Climate change denial is a widely spread phenomenon in the United States that has for decades shaped the country's response to the numerous environmental challenges it has been facing. This thesis deals with the role of the American fossil fuels lobby in the analyzed matter, as it constituted the main force behind its rise. The main goal of the thesis is to prove that the success of the climate change denial orchestrated by the fossil fuels industry was enabled by its ties to the political establishment. Moreover, it argues that this was done by using professionally drafted strategies, which turned a once-widely-accepted fact - backed by a scientific consensus - into a matter of debate, opinion, politics, ideology, and identity. In order to do that, the thesis firstly covers the historical development of the climate debate in the United Sates. It looks at the major milestones in the country's approach in dealing with the problem of the environment as well as the emergence of the climate change denial campaign itself. Secondly, it analyzes the various connections between U.S. politics, special interests, and climate science from the 1970s until the end of the George W. Bush Administration. Next, it introduces the specific tactics and methods employed by the climate change denial campaign. Moreover,...

Abstract:
Chapter 3 explores how and why poor girls and women become the means for ameliorating corporate crises and the broader problems of capitalism. It illustrates how two corporations embroiled in controversy, ExxonMobil and Goldman Sachs, reimagined themselves as benevolent yet strategic development actors committed to poor girls and women. The chapter examines how these corporations operate within the space of the Clinton Global Initiative to develop the concept of poverty as spectacle as a new way of thinking about the potential productivity of gendered, racialized, and classed regimes of representation of third world poverty and corporate benevolence that undergird the business of empowering girls and women.

Abstract:
This chapter seeks to find out whether energy corporations that operate in Nigeria provide adequate information about their corporate social responsibility, and whether these programmes are available on their managed online media platforms. For this reason, the study investigates how two energy corporations have engaged the online newsletter platform to share information concerning their CSR performance. The research employs a content analysis method. The population of the study comprises all online newsletters published by these corporations from January 2013 to August 2014. There are recognized similarities and difference in their use of online newsletters to share information concerning their corporate social responsibility to their various stakeholders. The study recommended that ExxonMobil (Nigeria) and SPDC (Nigeria) should make an effort to be consistent in their online newsletter publication. SPDC (Nigeria) should de-emphasise the frightening account of oil theft and spillage and focus more on human capacity development of persons within their host communities.

Roberts, Treacy Anne, and Natasha Theresa Gaskin-Peters. "Early Interventions for Guyanese Business Development and Optimization." In Offshore Technology Conference. OTC, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4043/31016-ms.

Abstract:
Early Intervention and Local Content Optimization Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited ("ExxonMobil"), an affiliate of Exxon Mobil Corporation, and its co-venturers Hess Guyana Exploration Limited and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited, discovered oil in the Stabroek block offshore Guyana during the first half of 2015. The success of safely drilling their first well (Liza-1), followed a history of 40 dry holes in the Guiana Basin prior to ExxonMobil beginning ultra-deepwater oil and gas exploration in 2008 (Varga et al. 2021). Guyana, with a small population of 750,000, was primarily economically focused on agriculture, manufacturing, and the mining of bauxite and gold. ExxonMobil identified the need for an early, focused, coordinated, and long-lasting approach to local content planning to provide tangible results for Guyana. Developing local businesses to actively participate in the industry and enter the supply chain while raising awareness of how the oil and gas industry operates was paramount, as was managing expectations of the Guyanese government and populace about local content. ExxonMobil recognized that the established mining sector in Guyana had the potential to provide a base of local suppliers able to transition into the emerging oil and gas sector. It subsequently undertook a number of assessments and studies on the local economy to further understand the local context. The finding of these assessments highlighted that most Guyanese companies were operating in the small local economy or working within the Caribbean region, limiting their exposure to international standards and providing little impetus to become globally competitive. Despite having technical competencies that could be utilized in the oil and gas industry, shortfalls were apparent in the areas of auditable systems, business processes, quality assurance, and safety. Closing the gaps would take time and investment, and a shift in culture in some parts. An internal assessment of ExxonMobil's supplier development programs was conducted, and a Guyana supplier development program was developed by drawing from best practices around the globe. ExxonMobil, with the support of its Stabroek Block co-venturers, took a proactive decision and devised a plan to engage an independent third party to run a "fit for purpose" enterprise development centre (EDC) to support the technical development in country through local content prior to final investment decision (FID). In order to be equipped to provide early roll out of local content development, and 6 months before FID for Liza 1, ExxonMobil released a Request for Proposal (RFP). Bidders were invited to submit proposals on how the EDC would function "fit for purpose" and compliment rather than compete with current Guyanese activities and vendors. The successful bidder, DAI Global LLC (DAI), had a proven track record of international socioeconomic project successes and was selected to form a unique and collaborative, strategic relationship with ExxonMobil. Although DAI had previous experience in nascent markets, the challenge in Guyana was to expand the Guyanese supplier base into a new sector. The global experience of both ExxonMobil and DAI worked in tandem to produce a flexible management structure with the capability to adapt to the ensuing exploration successes and expanding industry needs. Both short and long term programs would be utilized to engage businesses for the changing needs of businesses during varying developmental stages. Additionally, ExxonMobil's foresight to incorporate local content requirements and contractual use of the centre into prime contractor contracts provided support for the long-term viability of the EDC. The EDC established in Guyana was named The Centre for Local Business Development (Centre). The Centre design provides a supportive environment where seeking and acquiring information about the oil and gas sector is a comfortable experience. Inclusive of classrooms, meeting spaces, offices, and networking areas, the Centre sponsors engaging programs and provides mentorship for companies entering the industy. Drawing upon studies and data to drive the content and focus of its programs, the Centre addresses relevant needs in the business community. For example, a DAI baseline study on the international competitiveness of local businesses showed that two-thirds of Guyanese businesses were not internationally competitive and needed support with basic business systems (e.g. financial management, supply chain management and human resources). Other stakeholder focus group studies conducted by ExxonMobil determined that there was a lack of foundational knowledge about the oil and gas sector. Having access to this research pre-FID allowed for a head start on planning and enabled the implementation of a work program just 3 months after the Centre's opening.

Abstract:
Abstract Exploration in the Guyana-Suriname Basin has been a decades-long endeavor, including technical challenges and a lengthy history of drilling with no offshore success prior to the Liza discovery. The 1929 New Nickerie well was the first onshore well in Suriname, and was followed by 30 years of dry holes before the heavy-oil Tambaredjo field was discovered in the 1960s. In the 1990s, nearly 40 years after the Tambaredjo discovery, ExxonMobil utilized the 1970s-vintage, poor-to moderate-quality, 2D seismic and gravity data available to create a series of hand-drawn, level-of-maturity (LOM) source and environments-of-deposition (EOD) maps over the basin to move their exploration efforts forward. This work established the genetic fundamentals necessary for understanding the hydrocarbon system and led to negotiation for and capture of the Stabroek Block in 1999. The Liza-1 success in 2015 spurred extensive activity in the Basin by ExxonMobil and the Stabroek Block co-venturers, Hess Guyana Exploration Limited and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited (Austin et al. 2021). The collection of extensive state-of-the art seismic data has been leveraged to enable successful exploration of multiple play types across the Guyana-Suriname Basin. Further data collection, including over 2 km of conventional core and additional seismic data acquisition and processing, has enabled ExxonMobil to adopt interpretation techniques that are applied across the entire basin to characterize and understand the subsurface better. From initial hand-drawn maps to the use of advanced technology today, ExxonMobil's work in the Guyana-Suriname Basin has relied on integration of geologic and geophysical understanding as well as the ability to leverage new technology to continue a successful exploration program with 8 billion barrels discovered to date.

Abstract:
Weld procedure qualification methodologies for ExxonMobil high strain pipelines are presented. ExxonMobil has been involved in the design and construction of high strain pipelines for both onshore and offshore applications. These projects have included onshore applications involving potential seismic activity (fault displacement and soil liquefaction) as well as arctic applications that may involve displacements associated with frost heave and thaw settlement. Recent offshore installations have been designed and constructed to accommodate potential displacement caused by ice scour. Some of these installations have been designed to accommodate in excess of 3% longitudinal tensile strain demand. A critical element of the overall pipeline design is the qualification and validation of acceptable strain capacity for the pipeline girth welds. A girth weld qualification test program, based on large scale proof testing (i.e., curved wide plates) has been developed and executed.
