'Storytelling. Pasifika stories told with context, complexity and completness. Just another side to the theme of this book on better reporting of race and ethnicity' - The Authentic Voice. 'The word 'neutrality occurs when we talk about the Red Cross. It often means a 'no comment'. But this journal on 'communication' is an eye opener and full of interesting comments. Its editorial notes that in a time of conflict, the sender's message is printed as information and that of the opponent as propaganda. It could be expressed as 'the first casualty when war comes is truth.'' - International Review of the Red Cross. 'Geoffrey Cox's many dramatic eyewitness accounts of the bitter battles for demoracy and survival in the dommed city are a living example of the journalism maxim 'first draft of history'. His vivid reportage provided the foundation for this classic account of one of the critical periods of the war, Defence of Madrid. The book was written in a two-month period after the Republicans' successful defence of the city.' -Defence of Madrid.

Abstract:
Electronic resource usage has proved as one of the best decision making tools in the library setups. Electronic resource usage in relation to the political disturbance can act as one of the tools to highlight the impact of political disturbance on educational setups in general and the electronic resource usage in particular. The study takes a serious look in the electronic resource usage in Kashmir and the impact of unrest on it. The paper highlights a relational platform between education and conflict studies. How conflict affects the electronic resource usage in a conflict zone has been highlighted in the study. Transaction logs in the form of COUNTER Report deliberating the usage of Project Muse journal titles at University of Kashmir were analyzed to know the extent of usage of e-resources by the academia of Kashmir during the time of conflict from a time period of January 2008- December 2010. Peace has a great role to play in the development of any community from every aspect. Political disturbance hampers the educational sector to a greater extent. The usage logs helped to reveal the actual picture of academic behaviour of Kashmiris in the time of conflict. The study clearly reflects that political disturbance has a negative effect on the educational sphere in general and electronic resource usage in particular. The study was confined to the analysis of the transactions logs generated from Project Muse at University of Kashmir. The study can lay a base for the policy makers associated with education to take some immediate and curative steps that can control the devastating effects on the academia caused because of frequent disturbances in the valley of Kashmir. The study is an eye opener for the academicians and the policy makers in Kashmir. The study will be helpful in visualizing the utility of log analysis in reflecting the ill effects of political disturbance on academic circles. The paper is first of its kind trying to link education and conflict studies of a politically simmering area, Kashmir. The research can further be extended to analyze the impact of political normalcy on the academia of Kashmir. How normalcy acts as an indicator of enhanced e-resource usage can be studied.

Abstract:

The conflict of interest amongst the professionals like client and contractor project managers, site engineers, quantity surveyors and designers/architects play crucial roles for the unethical practices and consequently these practices have adverse impact on the product quality, faith of clients and investors’ confidence in the construction industry. Hence, this research is aimed at examining the common forms of unethical practices among professionals in the construction industry as well as uncovering the factors that have encouraged these practices. This study depends on the questionnaire survey amongst professionals of the construction industry. The survey is conducted to recognise the view of key stakeholders from different perspectives of the affected parties on the concept of business ethics in the building and construction industry, which has key contribution on the national economic growth of the developing countries. The survey concludes that untimely legal action including changing project manager’s responsibility and delays in payment processes are key ethical practices from owner/client aspect, while contractor’s unethical practices are under bidding, bid cutting and shopping, bid rigging and over billing. But from the consultant aspect; lack of supervision, poor monitoring and taking bribes under different pretend are found to be the encouraging factors for unethical conducts in the construction industry. It is also found that accepting the bribes, gifts and conflicts of interest are the most common forms of unethical practices. The findings from the study are expected to help as an important eye opener to policy makers and regulatory agencies in detecting and preventing unethical practices. In conclusion, avoiding the conflict of interest and promoting the ethic codes to professionals will help to restore the investor and people confidence, faith of the clients and improve the quality of buildings and infrastructures. The study recommends that promoting awareness regarding the values of ethical behaviour at different forum and ensuring the effective punishment for unethical activities at different stages of project life cycle might reduce the unethical practices in the construction industry.

Journal of Advanced College of Engineering and Management, Vol. 3, 2017, Page: 55-77

Abstract:
The Communist University of Workers of the East (Kommunisticheskii Universitet Trudiashchikhsia Vostoka, KUTV) was opened in early 1921 in Moscow with the aim of training national cadres for work in party and government bodies in the Soviet and foreign East. The press organ of the KUTV was the academic research journal “The Revolutionary East”, publishing articles on Oriental Studies by the country’s leading scientists. Formally reporting to the Russian Communist Party of Bolsheviks, KUTV in fact carried out all of its multifaceted work under the leadership of Comintern. For this reason, the documents of Comintern are of great importance for the study of KUTV history. With an eye on the upcoming 100th anniversary of the university, this article aims to study the contingent of Turkish students who studied there in 1921–1938. The author analyses memoirs and analytical works that impacted the Turkish leftist movement. Graduates of KUTV retained their memories of the days spent in Moscow, their living conditions, organization of classes, recreation and internships. The article attempts to reconstruct the names and individual episodes of the activities of Turkish students. Along with the poet Nazim Hikmet, many major leaders of the leftist movement and of the Turkish Communist Party (TCP) were also alumni and teachers of Communist university. However, ideological differences within the TCP itself and the severe consequences of political persecution by the Turkish government crushed the development of the communist movement in the country. After returning to their homeland, part of the KUTVovites were arrested and imprisoned for a long period, another part abandoned socialist ideas, and some even joined the Kemalist camp.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to do a contrastive analysis of the dominant errors of Communication Arts 2 students’ use of cohesive devices in English essays. Its four specific objectives are (1) to know the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of academic program, age, available English reading materials and references at home, first language, gender, length of stay in college, number of English courses taken in college and types of school the respondents graduated from; (2) to determine the dominant errors the respondents commit in the use of cohesive devices in essay; (3) to reveal if there is a connection between the respondents’ profile and their use of cohesive devices; and (4) to design an instructional material that will help improve the students’ writing performance. The respondents in the study included fifty-three (53) freshmen college students aged 16-29, taking different academic programs. All of them were enrolled in Communication Arts 2 at STI College for the academic year 2013-2014. They were composed of 37 male students and 16 female students. The research findings are as follows: Academic program of the respondents. The majority of the respondents are HRS students that are 20 out of 53 or 37.7%, followed by 14 (26.4%) BSIT students. Whereas, the least frequency is accounted for is BSCS with only 3.8%; Age. The study reveals that 13 (24.5%) of the respondents are 17 years old; 12 (22.5%) of the respondents are 19 years old; 7 (13. 2%) of the respondents are 18 years old. The least age brackets are 16, 26 and 29 years old. These only accounted for 1.19% of the respondents; Available English reading materials and references at home. The study reveals that 36 (67.9%) of the respondents have a dictionary at home; (66%) of the respondents have a magazine at home; 31 (58.5%) of the respondents have a newspaper at home. Whereas, only 6 (11.3%) of the respondents have a thesaurus at home; Gender. There are more males than females among the respondents in this study. 37 (69.8%) of the respondents are males while 16 (30.2%) are females; First Language. The study reveals that 48 (90.6%) of the respondents use Tagalog as their first language; 3 (5.7%) use Bisaya as their first language; 1 (1.9%) uses Maranao as his first language; 1 (1.9%) uses Waray as his first language; Length of stay in college. The study reveals that 17 (32.1%) of the respondents have been staying in college for 3 semesters and 16 (30.2%) of the respondents have been staying in college for 2 semesters. Only 3 (5.7%) respondents have been staying in college for 7 semesters and 3 (5.7%) have been staying in college for 8 semesters; the Number of English courses taken. The study reveals that that 21 (39.6%) of the respondents have taken two (2) English courses and 18 (34.0%) of the respondents have taken one (1) English course. Only 1 (1.9%) respondent has taken five (5) English courses; Types of school the respondents graduated from. The study reveals that 32 (60.4%) of the respondents graduated from public high schools, while 21 (39.6%) graduated from private high schools; The study reveals that 51 (96.2%) of the respondents committed error in using reference; 43 (81.1%) of the respondents committed error in using conjunction; 15 (28.3) of the respondents committed error in using lexical cohesion; 7 (13.2%) of the respondents committed error in using ellipsis; 2 (3.8%) of the respondents committed error in using substitution. Thus, errors in using references and conjunction are frequently committed by the respondents. In addition, the study reveals that there is no statistical connection between the respondents’ demographic and scholastic profile (academic programs; age; gender; first language; length of stay in college; a number of English courses taken in college; type of school they graduated from) and their use of cohesive devices. The study also reveals that except for thesaurus and lexical cohesion there is no statistical connection between the respondents’ available English reading materials and references at home and the errors committed in the use of cohesive devices. The following inferences are made in the light of the above-mentioned findings: The analysis of the data shows that the respondents’ profile does not affect their writing performance. That means students commit mistakes in the use of cohesive devices regardless of their academic program, age, first language, gender, length of stay in college, number of English courses taken in college, and types of school from which they graduated from. In addition, the available English reading materials and references at home such as a dictionary, journal, newspaper, textbook, and magazine do not have a significant connection with the respondents’ errors in using cohesive devices. However, the findings reveal that there is a significant connection between the respondents with a thesaurus at home and the errors they committed in their essays; All the errors made in learning the L2 could be attributed to ‘interference’ by the L1. Contrastive Analysis could not predict all learning difficulties, but was certainly useful in the retrospective explanation of errors; Differences between two languages affect the way a person produces in the target language because differences among languages cause learning difficulties, and on the other hand, similarities among languages make for ease of learning; The researcher realized that a well-designed instructional material can be used to help improve the students’ writing performance. The following recommendations were made due to the abovementioned findings and conclusions: The Instructors should use supplementary writing materials. They may adapt existing ones or design new ones. The Library should include supplementary writing materials for the students to help and motivate them in writing. The Textbook Authors should adapt their production of English textbooks in order to address the extensive writing materials and activities of the students. The Instructional Designers should include more exercises in the syllabi they make to help the students improve their ability to properly use cohesive devices in writing. The School Administrators should consider this study as an eye-opener regarding the need to raise the level of teaching effectiveness of the faculty, students’ academic performance, and sufficiency in writing materials. The Future Researchers could use error analysis in the use of cohesive devices to make their study profound and wider in scope.

Abstract:
The 2015 publication of Nick Sousanis’s graphic dissertation, Unflattening, opened doors for artist-scholars who challenge conventional research methodologies by producing graphic dissertations, graphic research, and comics-based publications in academic, scientific, and medical journals. Unflattening came out one year after I began a PhD program in cultural studies at the University of California, Davis, with a proposed graphic dissertation of my own. In this essay, I will discuss how my intended project, a graphic narrative about my maternal grandmother and her experiences of the Second World War in Germany, became a graphic memoir—an intersectional feminist Bildungsroman that explores themes of transgenerational memory, displacement, and childhood sexual abuse. As an astute scholar in my cohort put it, “You’ve found a new way of ‘doing’ psychology and history.” How is the very particular kind of subjectivity, a seeing from the ground up, or from a “snail’s eye view,” engendered by the comics form, useful for contemporary decolonial scholarship? In addition to writing about my graphic memoir, Queen of Snails (forthcoming by Graphic Mundi, an imprint of Penn State University Press in 2022), I will interview Kay Sohini, a PhD candidate at Stonybrook, about Unbelonging, her graphic dissertation in progress, Helen Blejerman (Lulu La Sensationelle, Presque Lune Editions, 2014), and Sarah Lightman (Book of Sarah, Myriad Press and Penn State University Press, 2021). How has the process of creating their graphic narratives changed their approaches to research? What have they learned by employing drawing and writing in crafting works that include autobiographical elements? How might some of these processes be useful to scholars seeking to unpack intersectional issues of transgenerational trauma, misogyny, and racism?

Abstract:
‘Jane Austen practising’ Virginia Woolf Three notebooks of Jane Austen's teenage writings survive. The earliest pieces probably date from 1786 or 1787, around the time that Jane, aged 11 or 12, and her older sister and collaborator Cassandra left school. By this point Austen was already an indiscriminate and precocious reader, devouring pulp fiction and classic literature alike; what she read, she soon began to imitate and parody. Unlike many teenage writings then and now, these are not secret or agonized confessions entrusted to a private journal and for the writer's eyes alone. Rather, they are stories to be shared and admired by a named audience of family and friends. Devices and themes which appear subtly in Austen's later fiction run riot openly and exuberantly across the teenage page. Drunkenness, brawling, sexual misdemeanour, theft, and even murder prevail.

Abstract:
This book tells the story of how a cadre of dedicated, iconoclastic scientists raised the awareness of a long-recognized preference for publishing positive, eye-catching, but irreproducible results to the status of a genuine scientific crisis. Most famously encapsulated in 2005 by John Ioannidis’s iconic title, “Why Most Published Research Findings Are False,” awareness of the seriousness of the crisis itself was in full bloom sometime around 2011–2012, when a veritable flood of supporting empirical and methodological work began appearing in the scientific literature detailing both the extent of the crisis and how it could be ameliorated. Perhaps most importantly were a number of mass replications of large sets of published psychology experiments (100 in all) by the Open Science Collaboration, preclinical cancer experiments (53) that a large pharmaceutical company considered sufficiently promising to pursue if the original results were reproducible, and 67 similarly promising studies upon which an even larger pharmaceutical company decided to replicate prior to initiating the expense and time-consuming developmental process. Shockingly, less than 50% of these 220 study results could be replicated, thereby providing unwelcomed evidence that John Ioannidis’s projections (and others performed both earlier and later) that more than half of published scientific results were false and could not be reproduced by other scientists. Fortunately, a plethora of practical, procedural behaviors accompanied these demonstrations and projects that were quite capable of greatly reducing the prevalence of future irreproducible results. Therefore the primary purpose of this book is use these impressive labors of hundreds of methodologically oriented scientists to provide guidance to practicing and aspiring scientists regarding how (a) to change the way in which science has historically been both conducted and reported in order to avoid producing false-positive, irreproducible results in their own work and, (b) ultimately, to change those institutional practices (primarily but not exclusively involving the traditional journal publishing process and the academic reward system) that have unwittingly contributed to the present crisis. For what is actually needed is nothing less than a change in the scientific culture itself to one that will prioritize conducting research correctly in order to get things right rather than simply to get published. Hopefully this book can make a small contribution to that end.

Abstract:
Abstract Jamila Begum’s Urdu short-story “Husnara Begum” appeared in December 1915 in the Urdu journal Tehzeeb-e-Niswan, which was founded by Mumtaz Ali (1860-1935) in 1898 in partnership with his wife Muhammadi Begum (1878-1908). This story highlights the plight of an abandoned wife, whose husband deserts her and his daughter Husnara to get married to the daughter of a rich trader. This is a fictional account of the misery and struggles of a Muslim woman, who opens an elementary school to eke out her living and educate her daughter. The success of their enterprise and consequent prosperity delivers the radical message of women’s empowerment, demonstrating how education can be used as a tool to battle economic adversity. The story ends in the marriage of Husnara to a barrister as a reward for their hard-work. This woman’s narrative rewrites the traditional concept of sharafat in order to accommodate the idea of women’s economic independence. “Husnara Begum” demolishes the stereotypes about Muslim women as mere victims of Muslim patriarchy and raises the issue of women’s agency in the age of feminism. No information is available about the author of the story except that she published this short-story in Tehzeeb-e-Niswan in 1915. The translation of this story from an Urdu women’s journal is aimed at recovering the lost voices of Indian Muslim women in the early twentieth-century.

Though quality is a perception about the performance in products and services offered, it is expected to be shaped through mutual consent in the eyes of internal and external stakeholders of the institutions. Despite the different needs, social contexts and cultures of higher education institutions, general standards have been developed to guide distance education providers in their quest. This paper concentrates on external evaluation pillar of quality assurance that is accreditation according to American, European and Asian perspectives and tries to explain the shared understanding about quality in higher education in the face of cultural diversity. A case-study, the quality journey of Anadolu University, Open Education System is described as an example of different ways leading to the same target.

Abstract:
The minute you open the studio door and make eye contact with the eager I child on the front steps, you are hooked. There is something about this child that captures your attention. This child has potential talent. You know even before you have heard a note of music. Seasoned teachers have this intuitive feeling and can sense the energy and enthusiasm of these youngsters. They may be quiet and shy, yet their eyes give them away. You are eager to check out your “hunch.” After a few minutes of musical tasks in the studio, with parents sizing up the teacher-pupil possibilities, you realize you were correct. So let’s get started! Anyone who has taken music lessons remembers that very first lesson, when books are slick and new and every maneuver learned on the instrument is an adventure. The talented youngster literally takes off full speed ahead in this adventure. The journey can be exciting and rewarding, if the match of teacher and student “clicks.” In previous chapters we have described the importance of training in the lives of young, talented children, but we have not examined how this training nurtures talent. In this chapter I attempt to answer some important questions concerning training and talent development. What must we know about musical learning to match training with student reasoning abilities at different ages? Where do we begin? How can we keep a talented student comfortably challenged in the studio or classroom? This chapter will answer some of the basic questions regarding musical learning, beginning private instruction, the private studio, suitable curriculum for the young talented student, and creative opportunities that will nurture a young musician. When last we left our creative preschooler, lots of imaginative singing was taking place, with a growing sense of tonality to the “real” songs in the culture. By the age of four, the entire song is imitated. At five or six, a young singer has emerged who is comfortably learning new songs by rote. The next few years are critical in the development of musical talent. Understanding the cognitive and musical development of children at this age will help gauge musical expectations.

Abstract:
The exhibition entitled Wyspiański Unknown, opened at the beginning of 2019 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the artist is both a supplement to the earlier Wyspiański exhibition and its culmination. The last hall houses a two-level library holding nearly 600 titles from Stanisław Wyspiański’s book collection. The smooth lines of the walls of this ‘library’ are a spatial continuation of the pastel drawing Apollo (System Copernicus) hanging along the main axis. The colours used in the two joined interiors, blue and yellow, are another allusion to the design of the famous stained-glass window topping the composition. The formal inspirations for this space included Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, but also more modern edifices. In the blue and yellow room with Wyspiański’s books, the designers wanted to make visitors feel surrounded by the books and the pictures placed within a ‘ribbon’ going across the walls at the eye level. The ‘organic’ interior of the library is arranged in a cuboidal block filled with various display cases and single windows that allow seeing the interior from different levels. In the centre of the mezzanine there is a cosy area arranged to display one artefact – a diary. This last journal written by Wyspiański, placed inside a double glass showcase, seems to be levitating above the floor. The spaces enclosing the library are arranged in a more synthetic way, which continues the minimalist convention of the previous part of the exhibition and is in line with the neutral character of the white cube gallery model. On the white walls the visitors can see paintings and pastels loaned from other museums or private collections. Some of them were shown to the public for the first time at the Wyspiański Unknown exhibition. The vision of ‘Wyspiański’s library’ presented here is a combination of the historical library canons (both architectural and theoretical ones) and the contemporary aesthetics. It is an attempt to dress space with words.

Abstract:
Given the unprecedented novel nature and scale of coronavirus and the global nature of this public health crisis, which upended many public/environmental research norms almost overnight. However, with further waves of the virus expected and more pandemics anticipated. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 opened our eyes to the ever-changing conditions and uncertainty that exists in our world today, particularly with regards to environmental and public health practices disruption. This paper explores environmental and public health evidence-based practices toward responding to Covid-19. A literature review tried to do a deep dive through the use of various search engines such as Mendeley, Research Gate, CAB Abstract, Google Scholar, Summon, PubMed, Scopus, Hinari, Dimension, OARE Abstract, SSRN, Academia search strategy toward retrieving research publications, “gray literature” as well as reports from expert working groups. To achieve enhanced population health, it is recommended to adopt widespread evidence-based strategies, particularly in this uncertain time. As only together can evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) can become a reality which include effective policies and practices, transparency and accountability of decisions, and equity outcomes; these are all more relevant in resource-constrained contexts, such as Nigeria. Effective and ethical EIDM though requires the production as well as use of high-quality evidence that are timely, appropriate and structured. One way to do so is through co-production. Co-production (or co-creation or co-design) of environmental/public health evidence considered as a key tool for addressing complex global crises such as the high risk of severe COVID-19 in different nations. A significant evidence-based component of environmental/public health (EBEPH) consist of decisions making based on best accessible, evidence that is peer-reviewed; using data as well as systematic information systems; community engagement in policy making; conducting sound evaluation; do a thorough program-planning frameworks; as well as disseminating what is being learned. As researchers, scientists, statisticians, journal editors, practitioners, as well as decision makers strive to improve population health, having a natural tendency toward scrutinizing the scientific literature aimed at novel research findings serving as the foundation for intervention as well as prevention programs. The main inspiration behind conducting research ought to be toward stimulating and collaborating appropriately on public/environmental health action. Hence, there is need for a “Plan B” of effective behavioral, environmental, social as well as systems interventions (BESSI) toward reducing transmission.

Abstract:
Abstract In the fast-changing world of energy transition, The Subsurface (SS) Flare reduction project in the Gas Directorate (GD) of Petroleum Development of Oman (PDO) was kicked off beginning of 2021 to ensure continuity in growing our business and generating revenue while reducing the carbon footprint of our operations. The two main value drivers of this project were firstly to minimize HSE impact and reduce GHG emissions, in line with PDO goal towards net zero by 2050, and secondly to maximize hydrocarbon recovery. This is a first of a kind project in PDO as the GD is leading the way towards addressing subsurface flaring. We started the journey by mapping out the different flare contributors (post-frac, well testing, Flow Back Loop (FBL) units and Halite Clean out), quantifying their impact and identifying the big actors. Then, we worked with the different teams from Engineering, Well Services and Operations to build a 5-year work plan with a clear roadmap to reduce subsurface flaring by 60% in 5 years. In the first year (2021), we managed to reduce SS flaring by 37%. This reduction was accomplished by introducing two efficiency improvements which included a successful Flareless Halite Cleanout trail with a full-scale implementation plan, and the utilization of test separators in line with SMS units to verify the flared figures. This resulted in a 50% correction factor to the data on hand. Going forward, the focus will be on maturing the new technologies that will further reduce SS flare such as Green Completion, Well Head Compression (WHC) units, mobile flare gas recovery, etc. Given the complex nature of this project and the multidisciplinary efforts from Petroleum Engineers, Operations, Engineering, Well Services and New Technology, constructing a successful working plan to address this issue required effective collaboration and thinking outside of the box to find innovative solutions. As a result, we constructed a funnel of efficiency opportunities with a clear timeline including Green Completion, WHC, pre frac hook up, and mobile flare gas recovery units. Additionally organizational tools for enhancing efficiency were applied such as PPS (practical problem solving) and Goal Deployment methodologies. Such energy efficiency projects that reduce the GHG emissions with a streamlined process and identified involved stakeholders, help to better position the organizations to tackle the climate challenges. Moreover, they help to establish a better understanding of the current impact on climate and keeps an open eye for any new technology opportunity that can be materialized to reduce or eliminate GHG emissions. Abstract:
