Abstract:
AbstractEyelid malposition is a challenging problem faced by surgeons. Given the delicate nature of the eyelid and its complex anatomy, eyelid repair requires both a comprehensive understanding of eyelid anatomy along with thorough presurgical planning and surgical execution. A wide range of options is available for eyelid reconstruction but the location and extent of the deformity often dictate the type of repair. This article is a review of commonly encountered forms of eyelid malposition. Relevant reconstructive techniques and current evidence-based methods of reconstruction are discussed i

Purpose Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer of the eyelid, showing an increasing incidence in the white population. The authors studied the clinical characteristics and the treatment results of BCC of the eyelid in southwestern Finland during 1977–1997. Methods The authors reviewed the case records of 191 patients with BCC of the eyelids treated at the Turku University Eye Clinic during 1977–1997. The mean follow-up period after the treatment was 8.6±5.2 years. Results The 191 patients had altogether 194 BCC tumors of the eyelid with the mean diameter of the tumor being s

Previously used upper and lower eyelid adhesion methods are ineffective for patients with severe cicatricial contracture, and ectropion can easily recur. This study aimed to retrospectively examine upper and lower eyelid adhesions using an orbicularis oculi muscle flap and verify its stability. Background Loss of vision and other ocular defects are a concern with eyelid burn sequelae. This most commonly progresses from eyelid contracture to cicatricial ectropion and lagophthalmos. When left untreated, these may lead to exposure keratitis, ulceration, infection, perforation, and loss of vision. In the case of full-thickness eyelid burns, release and grafting are required. However, there is a paucity of studies on outcomes in eyelid burn surgery treatment, despite concern for permanent ocular damage or loss of vision. Background: There have been few articles on the vertical dimension of the Asian upper eyelid, the eyelid crease segment, and the upper palpebral segment. The eyelid crease height manifests differently depending on whether it is closed (on extreme downgaze), open, or on upward gaze. Methods: The central vertical dimensions of Asian upper eyelids were measured, together with the upper palpebral segment and eyelid crease height when present.
