Abstract:
‘Festivalization’—the organization of theatre cultures around the moveable feast of the festival—is a defining feature of theatre culture in an age of globalization. The effects of this phenomenon on Irish theatre have been apparent for many years, going back to the Tóstal festivals in the 1950s, which in turn evolved into the Dublin Theatre Festival, which would bring to Ireland forms of contemporary theatre practice that challenged Irish theatre-makers to explore innovative ways of creating performances. At the same time, as the ‘festival play’ and ‘event theatre’ became increasingly important to the economics of theatre, Irish productions mounted with an eye to the festival circuit came to feature more prominently in Irish theatre production, and a number of Irish companies now define themselves in relation to this new global geography. This chapter explores and assesses the effects of this important feature of contemporary theatre practice.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the multiple meanings attributed to the kōlam, a women’s ritual art in Tamil Nadu, India. Marking the transition of the private world to the wider public sphere, the author suggests that the kōlam is a sign of the woman householder’s health and therefore the health of her household. It serves as a form of ritual play, a sacred space, and an invitation to the goddess. The kōlam helps to ward off the evil eye, is a way to communicate with the divine, and is central to festivals and celebrations such as Pongal. The chapter introduces the Hindu notion that householders should “feed a thousand souls every day.” The skills involved in making the kōlam are a part of the common knowledge and are passed down through generations, representing the heart of the gift economy. Kōlams are found not only in Tamil Nadu but also throughout the world.

Abstract:
Abstract This book is the first complete bilingual edition and annotated translation of the poetry collection entitled Mystery within Words (Kuchūgen), which features 149 Chinese-style verses (kanshi) written by Dōgen Zenji (1200–1253), founder of the Sōtō Zen sect in early medieval Japan. These poems are very important for highlighting several key aspects of Dōgen’s manner of thinking and process of writing. Dōgen composed Sinitic poetry throughout all stages of his career at both Kōshōji temple in Kyoto and Eiheiji temple in the remote mountains for various purposes. These aims included reflections on meditation during periods of reclusion, commenting on cryptic kōan cases, eulogizing deceased patriarchs, celebrating festivals and seasonal occasions, welcoming new administrative appointees at the temple, remarking on the life of the Buddha and other aspects of attaining enlightenment, and offering capping phrases that help highlight prose teachings or instructions. Although Dōgen’s poetry has often been overlooked by the sectarian tradition, even though this collection was edited by the most eminent Edo period scholar-monk, Menzan, this style of writing should now be regarded in relation to the valuable roles that poetry played in the development of East Asian Buddhist contemplative life.
