Abstract:
The birth and development of performers' rights was initially witnessed in the twentieth century. Domestic laws and international conventions were drafted and implemented in various countries and the international community. Nigeria has followed a similar trend in the development of performers' rights by providing provisions protecting these rights. Equally, Nigeria has signed and ratified international treaties providing for the protection of performers' rights. However, there are issues relating to performers' rights that have not been given consideration. A broader system of protecting traditional performances with spiritual and social components is required. Purely spiritual festivals such as the Oro festival is guided by custom which must not be disregarded as a means of protection. Only worshippers or devotees are allowed to be a part of the festival. Strangers and women are forbidden to see the procession and when or if they do, the consequences are grave. Conversely, the Eyo, Atilogwu, Tengra and Osun Oshogbo festivals are spiritual festivals with social components that are not rigidly protected by custom, neither are the performances considered for protection in related rights in Nigeria. Such performances are littered on the internet by those who attend the festivals from various parts of the world. While the extent to which performers are protected in the Copyright Act of Nigeria should be commended, more should be done.

Abstract:
Although festival organizers have significantly increased their adoption of green practices, there has been relatively little research on the pro-environmental decision-making process in festival settings. Drawing from the value-belief-norm-theory, the purpose of this study is to investigate the pro-environmental decision-making processes of attendees of eco-friendly food festivals. A structural analysis of responses collected from 601 surveys revealed that affective triggers and personal norms played critical roles in the development of respondents’ pro-environmental intentions in festival settings. This study provides discussions and implications for research and practices related to green festivals.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, festivals, especially music festivals have become important vectors for promoting their host cities. Festivals are complex phenomena with high economic and socio-cultural impact. High CO2 emissions and huge resource consumption are commonly related to the festivals’ negative environmental impact. Ensuring the suitable amount of water for a large-scale event is essential for both the audience experience and the city residents, especially when their access to water is hindered by excessive water usage for the festival. Therefore, an accurate estimation of water consumption during festivals is a prerequisite for rigorous water planning. In the Covid-19 world, due to the worsening crisis of resources and to the increasing pressure exerted by audiences asking for more eco-conscious events, festival organizers are called to get together with other stakeholders and re-examine the water management issues. Water companies have already started to embrace digital solutions. Their further implementation will result in a large amount of environmental data that could contribute to a paradigm shift concerning festival sustainability. The present paper was conceived around this topic, with the goal of increasing the awareness of all the actors involved in festival operational processes. Outcomes of a desk research and a case study focused on the UNTOLD and Electric Castle music festivals are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract India is a country where every religion and community celebrates their culture. Festivals have an important role in Indian culture and are celebrated whole-heartedly by the citizens. Most of these celebrations culminate to causing pollution especially noise pollution due to festivities and rituals. One such festival is Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav which is magnificently celebrated in Maharashtra state of India. In the present study, noise pollution levels during Ganeshotsav at famous community pandals in Mumbai city were monitored in the year 2020. Noise level data was analyzed based on indices such as L 10, L 50, L 90, noise pollution level (LNP ) and noise climate (NC). Comparison of noise levels was carried out for the collected data during Ganesh Chaturthi in the previous years of 2018 and 2019. The city witnessed simple festival celebration in eco-friendly manner leading to significant decrease in noise levels due to CoVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic situation is an eye-opener for the city administration with demonstration in reduction of noise pollution. Many aspects of the pandemic can be carried forward in making new guidelines and policies to curtail pollution and eco-friendly celebration of festivals.

Abstract:
Festivals and ceremonies are part and parcel of African culture, usually in all its pump, merriment and pageantry. However, with the increasing wave of criminal activities in Nigeria especially in Edo state, festivals and ceremonies are being redefined and conceptualized in practice. Only recently a new festival ‘Festival of Curses’ was brought to the fore in combating crime in Edo state. The study therefore seeks to explain the festival as a traditional mechanism in crime control, the nature of the festival, the factors that led to its emergence in the 21st century, the level of acceptance and its impact in reducing criminal activities in the State. The study employed principally secondary literature and in-depth interviews among a cross section of the Bini. Major findings revealed that immediately after the festival of curses, a lot of criminals in the state besieged the Bini Monarch’s Palace to confess their atrocities; and pleaded for forgiveness. There was an overwhelming acceptance of the festival irrespective of the people’s religious affiliations to Christianity and Islam as a result of the potency and sudden drop in crime during the period. The study concludes that the festival should be taken as a mechanism of crime control and policing in Nigeria.

Abstract:
PurposeThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has once again brought to our attention one of the three main pillars of sustainability–the environment. It has also brought into sharp relief the fragility of the live music festival sector, whose success hinges fundamentally on the capacity for both travel and mass gatherings to occur. Considering this intersection of environmental sustainability and the live music festival sector, this paper–which reports on events occurring long before the global pandemic took hold–examines the ways in which eight Australian folk and world music festivals successfully engage in eco-friendly and pro-environmental practices and educational activities at their events. Findings from this research will assist industry practitioners in being able to engage in similar practices at their events, as well as further academic understandings of the relationship between the environment and the live music sector, and the role of environmental communication practices within this.Design/methodology/approachThis study engaged an exploratory research design using interviews to gain an insight into the perceptions of eight live music festival promoters regarding their patrons' on-site eco-friendly behaviours and engagement with the eco-friendly initiatives at their events.FindingsSocial support within the on-site festival community (applied here through the notion of a sense of communitas), coupled with the provision of eco-friendly initiatives and effective environmental communication approaches, were key pivot drivers to support patrons' pro-environmental behaviours. Engagement with environmental authorities and experts during the festivals was found to validate their eco-friendly approaches.Originality/valueThis paper provides details of, as well as insights into, the success of the eco-friendly and pro-environmental education practices engaged at select world and folk music festivals in Australia. It broadens and builds upon existing understandings of environmental communication practices.

Abstract:
Through the ages, man has recorded his personal life experiences and sojourns in drawings, paintings, artefacts, sculptures, weaving, drama, music, songs, festivals and other forms of art. These expressions form part and parcel of the cultural heritage of mankind, and in many ways help to articulate human history, norms, customs and way of life. To the Edo society, festivals constitute an essential appendage to their accomplishments. These festivals are usually celebrated with music and dance, which provide entertainment throughout the period of the celebrations. Apart from their entertainment value, festivals provide an opportunity for the memories of our forebears to re-assert themselves in the consciousness of the people, with the hope of leaving the world a better place. Festivals also form a part of the heritage of humankind and have traditionally been passed on for posterity. These festivals constantly remind people of their past which is usually compared with the present so as to ascertain whether communities are progressing or not and to document other dynamic changes. Furthermore, festivals enable celebrating communities to devise programmes to improve the areas in their culture where these have been neglected. The main focus of this study is on the music and associated ceremonies enacted during the royal Ugie (festival) of the Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba of the Benin kingdom. There are cycles of Ugie rituals held periodically within the confines of the Benin royal palace. Some of these ceremonies are of a private nature, while others are public. During these Ugie ceremonies, the palace is always the centre of ritual activities aimed at the well-being and prosperity of the Omo N’ Oba and the Edo people.

Abstract:
The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival leaves an indelible impression on any brave soul who ventures into the chill, dark November nights across its ten days, a rite of passage challenging conceptions of the stuff music is made of. Now in its thirty-ninth year, this is one of the more established contemporary music festivals, yet it never fails to provoke and stimulate, a snapshot of current musical preoccupations. The first weekend traditionally showcases a selection of significant works, setting the tone for the subsequent week, and 2016 was no exception. Jennifer Walshe and the Arditti String Quartet opened the festival in a ‘declaration of love to life on earth’. EVERYTHING IS IMPORTANT (2016) is an eco-treatise on the bombardment the world is suffering – a torrent of visual and vocal disturbance with the arch-complexist Arditti gamely along for the ride, a playful synergy of theatre, voice and string quartet, preparing us for what was to come over the next few days.

Eco festival is social interaction for building eco society through entertainment activities and preservation of eco environment. Eco festival applying regional eco asset is incresead as regional festival is getting more, but the program of eco festival is getting more umiformly. This study aims to suggest direction and plan of culture-art for eco festival using characteristics of space. Eco-friendly culture events at eco part similar to Ansan Reef Wetland are analyzed as case studies. Since eco park is not park categorization of part by law, many local government entitled ‘eco park’ indiscreetly, thus culture events at eco parks have character as local festival. Major contents are planed based on characteristics of main visitors group and eco-environment, and theme of event by supervised organization. Fall festival at Ansan Reef Wetland has basic direction for event: space usage to minimize harm eco-environment, focus on hearing as theme of festival, collaboration with culture-art organization, and participation of local artists. To preserve core value ‘ respect to eco-environment and enjoyment of art and culture’ for eco-environment, basic direction should be kept as below. First program of event should focus on unique differentiation of eco-environment. Second artists and experts specialized for eco-environment should be taken part in. Third healthy of hybrid between eco and culture-art with collaboration of organizations. Fourth eco-friendly visitors activities guideline should be made and be noticed to visitors.

This study aims to determine the role model of local community participation in the post-pandemic Rinjani geopark sport tourism festival. The pandemic has caused a shift in tourism to focus on Nature, Eco, Wellness, and Adventure (NEWA). For this reason, the local community of Sembalun Village, a key gateway to an arduous trek up Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara Province, initiated a sport tourism event due to the natural resource potentials. Hence, this qualitative descriptive research unveils several motivations that underlie the festival's implementation, including economic, cultural, and natural environmental factors—a role model for local community participation based on these driving factors with a Bottom-Top approach.

Shakespeare in Yosemite, founded in 2017, consists of an annual outdoor production of Shakespeare in Yosemite National Park on the weekend closest to World Earth Day and Shakespeare’s birthday. The productions are site-specific and heavily adapted for a general audience; admission is free. In this article, the co-founders describe the origins and aims of the festival within the contexts of applied theatre, eco-criticism and the American tradition of free outdoor Shakespeare. In describing the festival’s inaugural show – a collage piece that counterpointed Shakespeare’s words with those of early environmentalist John Muir – we make the case for leveraging Shakespeare’s cultural currency to play a part (however small or unknowable) in encouraging environmental awareness and activism.

Abstract:
Introduction: Firework-related ocular injuries are an important cause of preventable ocular injuries and are common during the festival season. Despite the strict legislation in Nepal, the use of a firework is still commonly used during Tihar and Chaath festivals. Objective: To evaluate demographic distribution, mode, causative firework, type of fireworks-related ocular injuries, and visual outcome at a tertiary eye hospital in Eastern Nepal. Methods: This is a hospital-based prospective interventional study. All the patients with firework-related injuries who attended the emergency and outpatient department of SCEH, Lahan, during or within 1 month of the festival season (Tihar and Chaath puja) were included in this study. Results: Total of 65 eyes were included. The left eye was involved in 49.1%, 82.5% were males. Mean age of the patients was 15.3±14.7 years (range 5yr – 75yr). Children less than 16 years were predominantly involved (77.2%). Firecrackers (56.1%) were the most common type of fireworks causing injury. The closed globe injuries were more (78.5%) compared to open globe injuries (21.5%). Surgical management was done in 50.9% of cases. Following management visual acuity of most patients improved. Only 8 eyes (12.3%) had visual acuity less than 3/60 after management compared to 28 eyes (43.1%) at the time of presentation. Conclusion: Firework related ocular injuries are important causes of preventable blindness. A combined approach of public awareness about the possible dangers, preventive measures, early treatment by trained primary ophthalmic care, and implementation of strict legislations are essential to reduce blindness due to this preventable cause.

Abstract:
Few studies of African ritual and festival performance have been written from a theatrical perspective, and Sam Ukala believes that the richness of such events has yet to be fully explored by African dramatists – while most of the western paratheatrical experiments derived from them have been influenced more by anthroplogical models than aesthetic principles. In pursuit of a dramaturgical approach to the study of African rituals and festivals, he focuses on the role and nature of impersonation in these events, and examines the relationship between the forms, objectives, and contexts of the performances and the kinds of impersonation to be found in them. Distinguishing between the western actor and the African role-player, and between ‘intense impersonation’ and possession, he suggests also some generic parallels between western theatre and African performance. Sam Ukala is a Professor of Drama and Theatre Arts at Edo State University, Ekpoma, Nigeria. A theatre director and playwright, his published plays include The Slave Wife, The Log in Your Eye, Akpakaland, The Trails of Obiamaka Elema, Break a Boil, and Two Plays: The Placenta of Death and The Last Heroes. In 1998–99 he was resident writer and director at Horse and Bamboo Theatre in the United Kingdom, where, with Bob Frith, he wrote and directed Harvest of Ghosts, a first experiment with wordless visual theatre, an extension of his preoccupation with ‘folkism’, a dramaturgy based on folk compositional and performance aesthetics formulated in his article in NTQ47 (August 1996).

Condet area has close links with Betawi Cultural civilization in Jakarta. In 1976, Condet Area was designated as a Cultural Heritage but the status was later revoked in 1988 because it was considered to limit the development of the Area. Condet area returned to attention after the issuance of the Governor of DKI Jakarta Province No. 881 of 2019 which stipulated the development of tourism in the form of the development of Betawi cultural arts, agro-tourism and ecotourism in Condet Area. The problems found are existing uniqueness scattered in the Ciliwung Condet area such as Betawi homes, Ciliwung Condet Community, Salak Gardens and festivals in the area that can be the main attraction but have not been fully utilized and facts that have occurred when the Condet Area became a cultural heritage considered limiting the development of the Area and the use of road bodies as the location for the Condet Festival. This study aims to determine the potential and problems that exist in the Ciliwung Condet Area, determine the things that support the Area to become a tourist destination and to propose the arrangement of the Area as a tourist destination. The arrangement can carry an eco-cultural concept, which is a concept that combines ecological and cultural aspects of a landscape to create a site. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach, one of which was through in-depth interviews described using descriptive methods. The results of this study are in the form of a master plan for the arrangement of the Ciliwung Condet Tourism Area. Keywords: Ciliwung Condet Area; Cultural Heritage; Riverfront; Tourism Destination Planning AbstrakKawasan Condet memiliki keterkaitan erat dengan peradaban Budaya Betawi di Jakarta. Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to (1) reexamine academic achievement motivation orientations within the context of instrumental music, and (2) examine relations among achievement motivation orientations, self-concept in instrumental music, and attitude to band in relation to teachers' ratings of performance achievement and effort, and students' grade level, gender, instrument, self-reported practice time, and selected music experience variables. Participants ( N= 300) were band students (Grades 7-12) in four school districts. Data were gathered concerning students' (a) motivation orientations (mastery, intrinsic, individual, cooperative, ego, competitive, approach success, avoid failure), self-concept, and commitment to band; (b) instrument, grade level and gender, practice time per week, and experience in private lessons, solo festival, and all-county band; and (c) performance achievement and effort as rated by their teachers. Results indicated that ratings of performance and effort were most strongly correlated with self-concept and intrinsic motivation, respectively. Practice time was most strongly correlated with intrinsic motivation. Factor analysis revealed three factors of motivation: Learning/Task Orientation, Performance/Ego Orientation, and Individual Orientation. The factors essentially replicated those found in a general academic achievement setting. Learning/Task Orientation was positively correlated with practice time, ratings of performance and effort, solo festival and private-lesson experience, and grade level. Performance/Ego Orientation was negatively correlated with grade level and solo festival ratings. Individual Orientation scores were positively correlated with ratings of performance and effort and solo festival ratings. Differences by gender and instrument group were nonsignificant. Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The source value of Adam of Bremen’s description of the pre-Christian sacrificial ritual at Uppsala is hotly debated. Some scholars emphasize that it rests on the account of an eye-witness, others that it is a compilation of Christian stereotypes of pagan cult in general. The aim of the present study is to find out what derives from genuine sacrificial cult among the Svear and what is drawn from Christian polemics. A critical analysis of Adam’s text is presented, and the sparse information from other sources on Scandinavian ritual practices is discussed. However, the essential thing is to compare with sacrificial texts, especially inscriptions, from the religions of ancient Europe and western Asia. It is shown that some details in Adam’s description may derive from oral tradition by local informants. Föreliggande studie granskar kritiskt innehållet i Adams notiser.

Abstract:
The focus of Wien Modern 2014, according to Artistic Director Matthias Lošek, is best summarised with the two English words ‘on screen’. In his editorial forward to the programme book, Lošek communicated the thinking behind the festival and explained that ‘“on screen” engages with the interface between film/television and contemporary music’. Perhaps it is no surprise, then, that the majority of events in the festival, which ran from 29 October until 21 November 2014, had a strong visual element. This precedence of the visual in a major contemporary music festival brought to mind a review of this year's Darmstadt courses: ‘Das Auge hört mit’, a reviewer of Darmstadt 2014 concluded in the latest issue of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, ‘the eye listens in’. The world, it seems, is not as we were taught: German-speaking Central Europe, for some the Mecca of absolute music, is looking elsewhere. How could this be?

Abstract:
This article explores the work that female archivists undertake today. It is based upon a series of six interviews—conducted largely in Europe in 2015—with noted female archivists, curators, and programmers. Through conversations with Bryony Dixon (British Film Institute), Giovanna Fossati (EYE Film Institute, Amsterdam), Karola Gramann (Kinothek Asta Nielsen, Frankfurt), Mariann Lewinsky (Il Cinema Ritrovato, Bologna), Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi (EYE Film Institute, Amsterdam), and Meg Labrum (National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra), it argues that women have a disproportionate impact upon the programming of silent film at festivals. It also suggests that there is a growing public that is attracted to festivals such as Il Cinema Ritrovato precisely because these festivals give us access to a vision of film history and feminism that we cannot find in traditional history books. Finally, it asks how these women work and, specifically, how the change to digital has impacted archival outreach and access today.

Abstract:
This article is about audiences’ reactions to plays at the 2013–14 Roverman Festival of Plays at the Ghana National Theatre. Using a modified version of Willmar Sauter's ‘Theatre Talks’, questionnaires and participant observation, I sought to ascertain what audiences at this festival made of two of the plays presented to them:What's My Name?andThe Day Dad Came. Audiences identified and discussed endemic corruption and domestic violence in ways that showed their keen engagement with and interpretation of the plays and their eagerness to take what was presented to them and make it their own. The discussion also reveals the audiences’ interest in the aesthetic qualities of the plays, which they shared in surprising detail. I argue that the personality of the director–playwright, Ebo Whyte, frames the audiences’ appreciation of the plays.

Abstract:
During the world-famous Holi festival, people throw and smear each other with a colored powder (Holi color, Holi powder, Gulal powder). Until now, adverse health and environmental effects (skin and eye irritation, air pollution, and respiratory problems) have been described in the available literature. However, the literature lacks data on the flammable and explosive properties of these powders during mass events, despite the fact that burns, fires, and explosions during the Holi festival have taken place many times. The aim of the article is to present the fire and explosion parameters of three currently used Holi dust and cornflour dust types as reference dust. The minimum ignition temperature of the dust layer and dust cloud, the maximum explosion pressure and its maximum rate of growth over time, the lower explosion limit, the limit of oxygen concentration, and the minimum ignition energy were determined. Tests confirmed that the currently available Holi powders should be classified as flammable dusts and low-explosive dusts. The likelihood of a fire or explosion during mass incidents involving a Holi dust-air mixture is high.

Abstract:
This paper is study about the intersection between yak herding and tourism. The main focus is on how the concepts of yak festival and gothstay are transforming the conventional notion of animal husbandry, in particular yak herding, in the eastern high mountain region of Nepal. It is based on ethnographic study among the yak and urang herders in the region. Triangulation methods i.e., observation, interview, household survey and GIS were used. The yak festival and the concept of gothstay are giving new meaning, value and symbol – something different from the customary usage – to yak and yak herding. The concept of yak-tourism is not only a connection of yak and yak herding with tourism, but also gendering of the yak through language, image and form in public spaces. Thus, the rational, instrumental and conventional way of describing of yak is not sufficient in the context of livestock tourism. Moreover, the concept of gothstay is transforming the traditional notion of goth; i.e., from herders’ place to touristic site for learning about Himalayan pastoral culture and lifestyle. It would be a potential alternative of livelihood source for the Himalayan herders who have very limited options for making a living.

Visible or Invisible Games? A Critique on the Future of the World GamesAs the crowded calendar of world sport and the increasing competition between sporting festivals is likely to affect more second-tier global sporting festivals than the Olympic Games (Cashman 2004, p. 134), this paper attempts to answer a few questions concerning the future of the World Games, i.e. a multi-sport mega event. The first and primary question is whether it is worthwhile to host the World Games. In this paper reasoned justification will be provided with a critical eye. Furthermore, questions will be raised about the when and particularly about the where. The content of the World Games' programs will be briefly discussed and critically evaluated as well. As an example the author will use the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for discussion.
