Abstract:
Abstract In the 1990s, after a series of experiments, the behavioural psychologist and economist Daniel Kahneman and his colleagues formulated the following peak-end evaluation rule: the remembered utility of pleasant or unpleasant episodes is accurately predicted by averaging the peak (most intense value) of instant utility (or disutility) recorded during an episode and the instant utility recorded near the end of the experience (Kahneman et al 1997 Q. J. Econ. 112 375–405). Based on this rule, we propose a mathematical model for the time evolution of the experienced utility function u = u ( t ) given by the scalar differential equation u ′ ( t ) = a u ( t ) + b max { u ( s ) : s ∈ [ t − h , t ] } + f ( t ) ( * ) , where f represents exogenous stimuli, h is the maximal duration of the experience, and a , b ∈ R are some averaging weights. In this work, we study equation ( ∗ ) and show that, for a range of parameters a , b , h and a periodic sine-like term f, the dynamics of ( ∗ ) can be completely described in terms of an associated one-dimensional dynamical system generated by a piece-wise continuous map from a finite interval into itself. We illustrate our approach with two representative examples. In particular, we show that the utility u(t) (e.g. ‘happiness’, interpreted as hedonic utility) can exhibit chaotic behaviour.

The presence of magnetic moments in uranium atoms in some of U 2 TSi 3, UTSi and U 2 T 3 Si ( T is a 3d, 4d or 5d transition element) compounds is discussed in terms of the hybridization of s, p, d and f atomic orbitals. The hybridization strength in these ternary series of isostructural compounds was calculated using the semiquantitative band structure approach of Straub and Harrison. The prediction criterion for the presence of magnetic ordering, comparing the band width with a critical energy, seems to hold. The dominant influence of fd hybridization effects in the change of magnetic properties inside an isostructural group is in evidence.

Abstract:
In the automotive industry, the use of stamped aluminium alloy components has become a very common occurrence. For the appropriate design of these components, it is necessary to know how the manufacturing process affects the material properties. In the first place, high plastic strains ( ε p ) can be generated during the stamping process, which can result in a change in the residual stress and mechanical properties in the plastically deformed areas. Furthermore, if a last coat of paint that is usually subjected to a thermal cycle, characterized by temperature ( T ) and exposure time ( t ), is applied, it can also influence mechanical behaviour. Consequently, this paper studies how both processes affect the mechanical behaviour of an aluminium alloy of the 5000 series, commonly used in these types of components. In particular, the mechanical properties such as the yield stress at 0.2% ( σ 0.2 ), the ultimate tensile strength ( s u t ) and the engineering strain at break ( e f ) have been analysed. To achieve this, a response surface technique, based on the design of experiments, has been used. The response surfaces obtained allow for the prediction of mechanical properties σ 0.2 , s u t and e f for any combination of values of t , T and ε p .

AbstractGiven a regular supercuspidal representation $$\rho $$ ρ of the Levi subgroup M of a standard parabolic subgroup $$P=MN$$ P = M N in a connected reductive group G defined over a non-archimedean local field F, we serve you a Rodier type structure theorem which provides us a geometrical parametrization of the set $$JH(Ind^G_P(\rho ))$$ J H ( I n d P G ( ρ ) ) of Jordan–Hölder constituents of the Harish-Chandra parabolic induction representation $$Ind^G_P(\rho )$$ I n d P G ( ρ ) , vastly generalizing Rodier structure theorem for $$P=B=TU$$ P = B = T U Borel subgroup of a connected split reductive group about 40 years ago. Our novel contribution is to overcome the essential difficulty that the relative Weyl group $$W_M=N_G(M)/M$$ W M = N G ( M ) / M is not a coxeter group in general, as opposed to the well-known fact that the Weyl group $$W_T=N_G(T)/T$$ W T = N G ( T ) / T is a coxeter group. Along the way, we sort out all regular discrete series/tempered/generic representations for arbitrary G, generalizing Tadić’s work on regular discrete series representation for split $$(G)Sp_{2n}$$ ( G ) S p 2 n and $$SO_{2n+1}$$ S O 2 n + 1 , and also providing a new simple proof of Casselman–Shahidi’s theorem on generalized injectivity conjecture for regular generalized principal series. Indeed, such a beautiful structure theorem also holds for finite central covering groups.

Abstract:
Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the use of two new drugs, namely Bedaquiline (Bdq) and Delamanid (Dlm), for treatment of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB). One of the concerns raised with the use of these drugs was QT-interval prolongation. This condition could be serious and life threatening. Hence, knowing the magnitude and its management is very important. This case series identifies the incidence and discusses the management of clinically significant QT-interval prolongation amongst a cohort of patients who have been on these medicines. Materials and Methods: Patients with reports of high grade QT-Interval prolongation (i.e. Grade-3 and Grade-4) were identified from the cohort of 265 patients enrolled on bedaquiline and/or delamanid and discussion is made on the pattern, severity and management of each cases identified. Results: Only 4 (1.5%) out of all 265 patients enrolled on Bedaquiline and/or Delamanid have developed high grade QT-Interval prolongation. And all are managed without permanent discontinuation of both drugs. Conclusion: The Incidence of clinically significant QTcF-interval prolongation among DR-TB patients taking bedaquiline and /or delamanid in Lesotho is low. And almost all cases can be managed with more frequent Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring and management of other possible causes of QT-interval prolongation without the need to stop one or both drugs permanently.

Abstract:
A series of VCV nonsense syllables formed with 23 consonants and the vowels //, /i/, /u/, and // was presented on videotape without sound to 5 hearing-impaired adults and 5 adults with normal hearing. The two-fold purpose was (a) to determine whether the two groups would perform the same in their identification of visemes and (b) to observe whether the identification of visemes is influenced by vowel context. There were no differences between the two groups either with respect to the overall percentage of items correct or to the visemes identified. Noticeable differences occurred in viseme identification between the /u/ context and the other 3 vowel contexts; visemes with // differed slightly from those with // and /i/; and there were no differences in viseme identification for // and /i/ contexts. Findings were in general agreement with other studies with respect to the visemes identified, provided it is acknowledged that changes can occur depending on variables such as talkers, stimuli, recording and viewing conditions, training procedures, and statistical criteria. A composite grouping consists of /p,b,m/; /f,v/; /θ,ð/; /w,r/; /t∫,d,∫,/; and /t,d,s,k,n,g,l/.

Abstract:
Intensive research has been devoted to the family of closed-cage carbon nanostructures since the discovery of buckminsterfullerene in 1985.1 Endohedral metallofullerene La@C60, with La inside the cage void space, was already detected the same year and La@C82 was isolated few years later.2 During the last two decades, many different M atoms have been encapsulated inside carbon cages of different sizes, in particular those metals of the lanthanide series.3 More recently, the first metallofullerene containing an actinide, Th@C82, was isolated and characterized.4 Later, other mono-actinidofullerenes as non-IPR U@C80, Th@C80 and U@C76; or IPR U@C82, U@C84 and U@C86 have been also characterized.5 In these actinide endofullerenes, the actinide tends to act with oxidation state +4, which involves an important metal-cage interaction with significant covalent contributions. Consequently, the predictions made by the ionic model are less reliable than for lanthanofullerenes. We here analyze in detail this actinide-cage interaction focusing on symmetry aspects of the cage patterns that mostly stabilize the internal actinide. References Kroto, H. W.; Heath, J. Abstract:
Introduction: In inflammatory bowel disease uncontrolled inflammation may play a role in the early progression of systemic atheromatosis with increased cardiovascular risk. Endothelial dysfunction is mediated by pro-inflammatory cytokines but also by an increased level of CRP which is involved in the expression of adhesion molecules and atheroma plaque rupture. Tailored treatment with better control of the ulcerative colitis and endoscopic healing might result in decrease risk of atherothrombotic events. Aim: We decided to use a well-established method (vascular Doppler ultrasound with media-intimate index measurement) to detect an increased incidence of endothelial lesions as predictors of early atheromatosis in patients with ulcerative colitis treated with biological or conventional therapy. Material and methods: We prospectively analyzed 25 patients with RCUH with a mean age of 40 years, 16 with biological treatment. The Student t test, the Mann Whitney U test and the ANOVA test were used to compare continuous variables. Results: A discriminant analysis was performed with the presence of atheroma plaque as a dependent variable and several predictor variables, such as age, triglycerides, cholesterol of patients with ulcerative colitis. Univariate ANOVA analyzes revealed that the presence or absence of atheroma plaque differs in the variables predicting the age, INR and ecoIMT of patients with ulcerative colitis (in the age of patients (F = 8.511, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.014) Patients ‚INR (F = 50,437, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.001) and Patients’ ecoIMT (F = 7,398, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.020) In another analysis of discriminatory function s -introduced the predictor variables specific to measuring the evolution of ulcerative colitis, respectively Mayo and Mayo E (age (F = 0.8511, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.014), INR (F = 50.437, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.001), ecoIMT (F = 7.398, df = 11, p = 0.020) and Mayo (F = 14.885, degrees of freedom = 11, p = 0.003). Conclusions: Age, endoscopic activity, and INR were correlated with predictive ultrasound changes for atheromatosis. Strengths are the prospective nature of the study and weaknesses are the limited number of patients and the fact that most patients were in remission and treated with biologicals, which could create bias in the sense of reducing the atherosclerotic risk directly correlated with active inflammation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the intensifying global issue of food insecurity within our country and the contributing factors thereof. It investigates the role architecture can play as a systemic tool (in the form of a gastronomic quarter) to facilitate the re[grow]th of a highly contested site. By identifying and drawing from global and local issues, new solutions, developed through the integration of socio-economic systems, act as points of acupuncture. These points aim to improve contextual conditions through food network empowerment. Through a newly informed architectural approach various people within society are enabled through local means of support. It is food and the accessibility thereof that forms the basis of the socially inclined space. Local support is essential for community growth and empowerment, which in turn, positively impacts the overall urban fabric through the provision of a more inclusive environment.

This study proposes a measurement and assessment model for the construction productivity of freeway reconstruction project, according to on the previous studies of Thomas and the characteristics of the freeway reconstruction project. The model is used on the cases of the freeway No. 1 reconstruction projects and No. 2 new construction project in Taiwan to realize and compare their respective influence factors of the construction productivity. When the model evaluates the threshold construction productivity of the embankment in the cases, the estimate values for the reconstruction projects and the new construction project are 0.048~0.052 MH/ M 3 and 0.025 MH/ M 3 , respectively. In addition, the influence factors in the reconstruction projects and between the reconstruction projects and the new construction project are introduced, leading to the arrangement of improvement methods. The results based on this study can support the use of the model to various constructions to completely establish the threshold construction productivity in construction engineering for the further use of the cost analysis and construction management. The working content factor in the model, however, should be further studied in a future to obtain a better result.

Abstract:
AbstractGiven a stationary continuous-time process f(t), the Hilbert–Schmidt operator Aτ can be defined for every finite τ. Let λτ,i be the eigenvalues of Aτ with descending order. In this article, a Hilbert space $$\mathcal {H}_f$$ ℋ f and the (time-shift) continuous one-parameter semigroup of isometries $$\mathcal {K}^s$$ K s are defined. Let $$\{v_i, i\in \mathbb {N}\}$$ { v i , i ∈ ℕ } be the eigenvectors of $$\mathcal {K}^s$$ K s for all s ≥ 0. Let $$f = \displaystyle \sum _{i=1}^{\infty }a_iv_i + f^{\perp }$$ f = ∑ i = 1 ∞ a i v i + f ⊥ be the orthogonal decomposition with descending |ai|. We prove that limτ→∞λτ,i = |ai|2. The continuous one-parameter semigroup $$\{\mathcal {K}^s: s\geq 0\}$$ { K s : s ≥ 0 } is equivalent, almost surely, to the classical Koopman one-parameter semigroup defined on L2(X, ν), if the dynamical system is ergodic and has invariant measure ν on the phase space X.

Abstract:
Our starting point is not hidden, nor is it far off. It is not an extreme place like Mono Lake or Freswick Castle, but it is a central concept expressed on a single page. The periodic table is the center of chemistry, and therefore of this book. You can spot it at a distance from its vaguely cathedral-like shape. You can see the chemical symbols that it contains on magnets and T-shirts and restaurant signs. Its regular columns are not quite symmetric, but that is because it has been twisted out of its natural shape by the contingencies of history. Rearrange it just a little and a simple mathematical pattern appears. To see this pattern, imagine that the periodic table is made out of beads on an abacus, arranged in the familiar U shape. Then push all the beads to the left: … Row 1 = H- He Row 2 = Li- Be- B- C- N- O- F- Ne Row 3 = Na- Mg- Al- Si- P- S- Cl- Ar Row 4 = K- Ca- Sc- Ti- V- Cr- Mn- Fe- Co- Ni- Cu- Zn- Ga- Ge- As- Se- Br- Kr Row 5 = Rb- Sr- Y- Zr- Nb- Mo- Tc- Ru- Rh- Pd- Ag- Cd- In- Sn- Sb- Te- I- Xe … By row, there are 2, 8, 8, 18, and 18 elements. The pattern continues in the rows below, but it is obscured by the fact that on most tables 14 elements have been moved out of the sixth and seventh rows. On the table here I have put them where they belong. These rows have 32 elements each. This can be simplified even more. The rows increase, first by 2, then by 6 more (2 + 6 = 8), then by 10 more (2 + 6 + 10 = 18), then by 14 (2 + 6 + 10 + 18 = 32). The series 2, 6, 10, 14 is the doubles of counting up by odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7. Put another way, each row is equal to 2n + 1 with n = integers from 0.

Abstract:
Both for Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, and Józef Tischner, freedom is a key matter. However, freedom must be e x p e r i e n c e d ; it is not revealed in objective metaphysics or in science. For Wojtyła, it is an experience of the moral a c t : freedom is a condition and in-gredient of the moral act and responsibility for it. It enters into the composition of the essential structure of the person, which means “self-restraint,” or shaping oneself through free choices. Freedom has the power to create man through itself: referring to others in morality, I at the same time refer to myself, deciding who I will be. This existential weight of freedom – responsibility for oneself before others, God, and oneself – is the price of freedom which, let us add, is inevitable. Even the rejection of freedom or resignation from it is still an expression of freedom. For Wojtyła, freedom shapes man through an instinc-tive, completely not induced reference to the truth about values. However, in this reference and in acting the subject is dependent only on itself. The weight of the action, whose truth we decipher in our conscience, is what most impresses Wojtyła. The lack of a need for the concept of grace in this vision is striking. The subject is independent, autonomous, and thus responsible. With regards to this point, Wojtyła is close to Thomism and its respect for the innateness of creation. For Tischner, freedom is key and is also an innate value that is experienced. Its essence is above all freeing, liberating; thus Tischner does not hesitate to discern it in extra-moral phenomena such as dancing, which liberates beauty, and even extra-human ones, such as the beauty of an elk jumping across a brook. Beauty and good require freedom. However, the true liberation of freedom is opening oneself to the freedom of the other in encoun-ter, as thanks to this I can enter into a relationship of love and fidelity; I can s a c r i f i c e myself and through this fulfill the highest act of freedom, an act that is not induced by pre-established responsibility for the other, as in Levinas’ philosophy. Although it is not induced, this act assumes in an essential way the relationality of the subject and at the same time its finiteness.

Abstract:
We investigated the pharmacokinetic parameters and their inter individual variations of a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) derivative (CY 216, Fraxiparine R, Choay). In a cross-over study, 100 anti Xa IC u/kg were injected in 12 healthy volunteers, either by IV or SC route, at one week interval. The pharmacological effects were followed on 12 serial citrated samples for 24h: - anti factor Xa (AXa) activity (chromogenic assay calibrated against CY 216); - APTT and thrombin clotting time prolongation. The main pharmacokinetic parameters (elimination half-life (T|); clearance (cl); distribution volume (Vd); bioavailability F (SC/ IV)) were calculated from the anti Xa activity curves using con-, ventional methods. The results (mean, range) indicated below confirm some classical properties of CY 216: poor anticoagulant effect (APTT-TT), even after IV injection, longer half-life than . standard Heparin (SH), distribution volume similar to plasma volume, excellent bioavailability of the drug.We also emphasize important inter-individual variations between volunteers, as known for the pharmacological effects of SH in vitro and ex-vivo. From those results it could be assumed that, as for SH, close monitoring of treatment with LMWH would be suitable with higher dosages, after validation of the correlations between those biological tests and clinical results.* anti Xa IC u : anti factor X activated Institut Choay unit.

Abstract:
According to the Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory of human development ([1][2][3][4][5]), the development of each individual cannot be observed without considering its relationship with the development of other people and, above all, with the environment in which they live. The ecological orientation of Bronfenbrenner with respect to human development is therefore based on the interest in the progressive adaptation between an active organism that grows and its immediate environment: the individual-environment interaction that is determined by the relationships existing between the different environmental situations and the individuals present in that context is fundamental. Consequently, the ecological environment that is considered relevant to development processes is not limited to a single environmental situation but includes the interconnections between multiple environmental situations and the different influences of each individual. The evolution of the Internet-based technologies has brought to the development of solutions that have profoundly changed the way we live, including education. The advent of social media and social networks represents a milestone in the history of Internet, opening up to profound reflections on the "virtualization" of relationships, their growing importance in everyday life, and their role in education. Many authors argue that the Internet and the social media should no longer be considered as a tool to connect to a virtual reality that is separate from the real world, but as a place in which users live daily ([6][9][11][10]); consequently, they constitute one of the environmental situations mentioned by Bronfenbrenner. However, the risks deriving from the use of social media have been widely discusses in the literature ([7][8][12]). Adolescents are more exposed to the social media threats, since they are unable to perceive the profoundly different dynamics that govern offline and online networks. In this paper, having in mind the Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory of human development, we argue that the progressive adaptation of students to social media should be considered as a process of their growth and development. Furthermore, we analyze some corrections to be introduced in the educational paths of adolescents necessary to reduce the threats deriving from the use of social media and social networks in education. Abstract:
A 67 year old male with IgA myeloma has been investigated for a severe deficiency of plasma vWf/F. VIII but normal platelet vWf/F. VIII. He has no personal history nor family history of bleeding problems. He was initially investigated for a prolonged APTT of 43 secs. (25-40) obtained in a preoperative clotting screen. During this investigation he was found to have IgA myeloma. In retrospect, an APTT prior to uneventful coronary artery bypass surgery two years previously had been prolonged. Routine investigation has shown that platelet count and bleeding time have been repeatedly normal. Plasma F. VIII:C is 0.08 u/ml., F. VIII:Cag 0.07 u/ml., vWf:Ag 0.05 u/ml. and ristocetin cofactor 0.05 u/ml. In contrast, platelet values for vWf:Ag of 53 units/109 platelets and F. VIII:Cag of 176 units/109 platelets are within the normal ranges for our laboratory. The platelet lysate vWf multimer pattern is also normal. Patient's plasma shows inhibitory activity against vWf:Ag but not against either F. VIII:C or ristocetin cofactor activity. When patient plasma is incubated for 60 mins at 37°C with vWf and analysed by crossed Immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) for vWf:Ag, a double arc precipitin line is observed with marked retardation of the first arc. A similar vWf:Ag CIE double precipitin arc is seen following the infusion of cryoprecipitate. T 1/2 for F. VIII:C and vWf:Ag are both reduced following the infusion of cryoprecipitate - F. VIII:C 2 hrs, vWf:Ag 3 trs. No secondary rise in F. VIIIrC is seen at 24 hrs. Despite severe deficiency of plasma vWf/F. VIII, this man does not have a clinical bleeding tendency. We postulate that his plasma vWf/F. VIII deficiency is the result of complexing of his IgA myeloma protein with vWf, resulting in premature clearance of the vWf/F. VIII complex. This case further emphasizes the role of platelet associated coagulation factors in maintaining normal haemostasis.

Abstract:
A graceful labelling of a tree T is an injective function f: V (T) → {0, 1, . . . , |E(T)|} such that {|f(u)−f(v)|: uv ∈ E(T)} = {1, 2, . . . , |E(T)|}. A tree T is said to be 0-rotatable if, for any v ∈ V (T), there exists a graceful labelling f of T such that f(v) = 0. In this work, it is proved that the follow- ing families of caterpillars are 0-rotatable: caterpillars with perfect matching; caterpillars obtained by identifying a central vertex of a path Pn with a vertex of K2; caterpillars obtained by identifying one leaf of the star K1,s−1 to a leaf of Pn, with n ≥ 4 and s ≥ ⌈n−1 2 ⌉; caterpillars with diameter five or six; and some families of caterpillars with diameter at least seven. This result reinforces the conjecture that all caterpillars with diameter at least five are 0-rotatable.

Abstract:
A plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) Mj, 50 kd is normally found in plasma at low concentrations. Plasma levels increase sharply upon stimulation of endothelial cells with endotoxin or monokines and activated platelets secrete significant quantities of PAI-1. It is possible that high levels of PAI-1 may be achieved at the local sites of intravascular thrombi. Semipurified PAI-1 was therefore prepared from human platelets to study its affinity for fibrin (F). Approximately 50% PAI-1 adsorbed to F monomer immobilized on sepharose and desorbed under conditions of acidic pH and high ionic strength suggesting hydrogen bonding as the mode of interaction. Wells of 96-well microtiter plates were each coated with 50 yg [125I] plasminogen (P)-free fibrinogen and clotted with thrombin in the presence and absence of different concentrations of PAI-1. After extensive washing of the wells, they were incubated with 5 mU of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and 5 mU of P for 6 h. Appropriate calibration curves utilizing different concentrations of t-PA and different concentrations of PAI-1 added to the supernatant rather than to F established that 8-15% of 21-166 mU PAI-1 incorporated into crosslinked (XL) F or noncrosslinked (NXL) F. Incorporated PAI strikingly inhibited fibrinolysis (FL). Percent inhibition of FL of XL or NXLF (Mean±S.D., N=5) plotted in the presence of 166, 83, 42 and 21 mU of PAI were: 83±3.3, 59.5±1.8, 29.7±5.2 and 15.2±6.14 for XLF and 78±5.3, 31±8.1, 14.5±10.5 and 0 Tor NXL F. As demonstrated by radioautography on SDS PAGE PAI-1 incorporated into F readily formed complexes with [125I] urokinase (u-PA). In these experiments, no evidence for crosslinking of PAI-1 into F has been obtained to date. In experiments utilizing agarose immobilized proteins, it was evident that not only F but also fibrinogen binds PAI-1; PAI-1 associated with F as well as fibrinogen is capable of forming complexes with [1251] u-PA.In contrast, fibronectin, collagen, gelatin and albumin did not bind PAI-1. Thus, PAI-1 in analogy with alpha-2 plasmin inhibitor may modulate physiological fibrinolysis through incorporation into fibrin.

CY222 given iv in doses (a) 5000 IC (Institute Choay)u bolus+1500 ICu/hr (b) 10000 IC bolus (c) 10000 ICu bolus+ 1500 ICu/hr (d) 15000 ICu bolus+1500 ICu/hr (e) 20000 ICu bolus (f) 20000 ICu bolus+1500 ICu/hr produced a dose related increase in anti-factor Xa levels (measured with CY222 as standard) and suppression of FPA levels. Dose (f) did not alter KCCT, produced FPA levels that were statistically indistinguishable from those of the UFH regime (indicating comparable anticoagulant effect), but had anti-factor Xa Levels (ICu) that were 2-3 times those of UFH. All samples were also assayed against the proposed LMWH Standard. Plasma levels of CY222 were then found to be 2-3 times lower, so that dose (f) had very similar anti-factor Xa levels to those of UFH. Clinically, doses <c), <d), (e) and (f) were all effective, although increasing amounts of fibrin were visible in the dialyser circuit with decreasing dose. T t is concluded that CY222 has comparable anticoagulant effect to UFH when present at similar anti-factor Xa concentration (measured against the LMWH Standard). CY222 may prove to be an effective alternative to UFH for use in haemodialysis.

Abstract:
A computational framework is proposed to path follow the periodic solutions of nonlinear spatially continuous systems and more general coupled multiphysics problems represented by systems of partial differential equations with time-dependent excitations. The set of PDEs is cast in first order differential form (in time) u˙ = f(u,s,t;c) where u(s,t) is the vector collecting all state variables including the velocities/time rates, s is a space coordinate (here, one-dimensional systems are considered without lack of generality for the space dependence) and t denotes time. The vector field f depends, in general, not only on the classical state variables (such as positions and velocities) but also on the space gradients of the leading unknowns. The space gradients are introduced as part of the state variables. This is justified by the mathematical and computational requirements on the continuity in space up to the proper differential order of the space gradients associated with the unknown position vector field. The path following procedure employs, for the computation of the periodic solutions, only the evaluation of the vector field f. This part of the path following procedure within the proposed combined scheme was formerly implemented by Dankowicz and coworkers in a MATLAB software package called COCO. The here proposed procedure seeks to discretize the space dependence of the variables using finite elements based on Lagrangian polynomials which leads to a discrete form of the vector field f. A concurrent bifurcation analysis is carried out by calculating the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix. A hinged-hinged nonlinear beam subject to a primary-resonance harmonic transverse load or to a parametric-resonance horizontal end displacement is considered as a case study. Some primary-resonance frequency-response curves are calculated along with their stability to assess the convergence of the discretization scheme. The frequency-response curves are shown to be in close agreement with those calculated by direct integration of the PDEs through the FE software called COMSOL Multiphysics. Besides primary-resonance direct forcing conditions, also parametric forcing causing the principal parametric resonance of the lowest two bending modes is considered through construction of the associated transition curves. The proposed approach integrates algorithms from the finite element and bifurcation domains thus enabling an accurate and effective unfolding of the bifurcation and post-bifurcation scenarios of nonautonomous PDEs with the underlying structures.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to evaluate blood coagulation changes in Ph positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph + CML) patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT), T-depleted with the monoclonal antibody Campath 1, and to find a possible correlation between changes of procoagulant proteins, physiological inhibitors and venoclusive disease (VOD). VOD is a major complication in, the early period following BMT.Out of 13 patients, two of them developed VOD. Von Willebrand Factor Antigen (vWF:Ag), Factor VII antigen (F.VII:Ag), Plasminogen antigen (PLG:Ag), Factor V activity (F.V:C), Antithrombin III activity, Protein C antigen (PC:Ag) and fibrinogen activity (FG) were evaluated in all patients following sampling times: day 10 (before conditioning regimen), day 0 (day of BMT), day + 10 (after BMT), day + 28 (median day of engraftment) and day + 60 (after BMT).PLG:Ag, F. VII:Ag and PC:Ag levels decreased significantly (p values < .05, < .025, < .001 respectively). In particular, in 5 patients whose PC:Ag levels dropped below the limit considered at risk for thrombosis (< 60 U/dl), two of them developed VOD. vWF:Ag, F. V:C and FG increased significantly (p values < .04, < .05, < .05 respectively). Antithrombin III activity did not change significantly throughout the period of observation. In conclusion, the reduction of PC, PLG and the contemporary rise of vWF and FG can increase the risk of developing thromboembolism in the early stage following BMT.

Abstract:
A unique sequence is required in heparin for binding to antithrombin III (AT III) and eliciting anti-factor Xa activity. We have previously synthesized a pentasaccharide containing all the structural features of this sequence. It binds to AT III with the same affinity as high affinity heparin. The complex thus formed has a high anti-factor Xa activity. We have now synthesized a new series of α-methylated pentasaccharides which better mimic the naturally occurring configuration at C1 of the reducing-end glucosamine unit. The synthesis of the inactive pentasaccharide II allowed us to confirm in this series the essential role of the 3-sulfate group borne by glucosamine unit F. Wehave also particularly addressed the still unanswered question regarding the role of the 2-sulfate group borne by iduronic acid G and of the 6-sulfate group borne by glucosamine unit H. Pentasaccharides III and IV elicit the same anti-factor Xa activity which is substantially decreased as compared to I. A similar decrease has been recently reported for pentasaccharide V (T. Beetz & C.A.A. van Boeckel, Tetrahedron Lett., 1986, 27, 5889). We therefore conclude that the presence of both these sin fate groups is required for full expression of the antifactor Xa activity.

Abstract:
In separate series of YT-700 engine tests, direct comparisons were made between the forward-facing labyrinth and dual-brush compressor discharge seals. Compressor speeds to 43 000 rpm, surface speeds to 160 m/s (530 ft/s), pressures to 1 MPa (145 psi), and temperatures to 680 K (765°F) characterized these tests. The wear estimate for 46 hr of engine operations was less than 0.025 mm (0.001 in.) of the Haynes 25 alloy bristles running against a chromium-carbide-coated rub runner. The pressure drops were higher for the dual-brush seal than for the forward-facing labyrinth seal and leakage was lower-with the labyrinth seal leakage being 2½ times greater-implying better seal characteristics, better secondary airflow distribution, and better engine performance (3 percent at high pressure to 5 percent at lower pressure) for the brush seal. (However, as brush seals wear down (after 500 to 1000 hr of engine operation), their leakage rates will increase.) Modification of the secondary flow path requires that changes in cooling air and engine dynamics be accounted for.
