Abstract:
To determine in influence of feeding, lighting and time of day on the copulating behavior of Panstrongylus megistus, 480 insect pairs were divided into four groups of 120 each and tested in the following respective situations: without food deprivation (F.D.), with five days of F.D., with ten days of F.D., and with 20 days of F. D. The tests were performed between 9:00 a.m. to 12:00a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with light (700-1400 lux) and in the dark (1.4-2.8 lux) and behavior was recorded by the time sampling technique. Mating spped (MS) and duration of copulation (DC) were also calculated for each situation. The maximum frequency of copulation was observed after five days of F.D., at night, in the dark (n = 16), and the minimum was observed for recently-fed pairs, at night, with light (n = 4). Males approached females more often than females approached males. MS was lowest in pairs with twenty days of F.D., at night, with light (X = 23.0 ± 16.0 minutes), and highest in recently-fed pairs, during the day, with light (X = 2.9 ± 2.5 minutes). DC was shortest in recently-fed insects, during the day, in the dark (X = 23.5 ± 6.7 minutes), and longest in recently-fed animals, at night, in the dark (X = 38.3 ± 6.9 minutes).

Abstract:
The maximum entropy principle has been earlier used to derive the Bose Einstein(B.E.), Fermi Dirac(F.D.) & Intermediate Statistics(I.S.) distribution of statistical mechanics. The central idea of these distributions is to predict the distribution of the microstates, which are the particle of the system, on the basis of the knowledge of some macroscopic data. The latter information is specified in the form of some simple moment constraints. One distribution differs from the other in the way in which the constraints are specified. In the present paper, we have derived some new distributions similar to B.E., F.D. distributions of statistical mechanics by using maximum entropy principle. Some proofs of B.E. & F.D. distributions are shown, and at the end some new results are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
In this essay the importance of social bonds when it comes to self-esteem and identity for five ex-offenders and five victims of crime has been examined. Further I wanted to understand how their self-esteem and relations have been affected by being a victim and ex-offender. The results showed that the bond to their families had been strengthened after each assault (victims of crime) or becoming sober and ending career as a criminal (ex-offenders). Exoffenders have, through the organization KRIS, received new friendships that have led to a strengthened self-esteem in each one of them. When it comes to the crime victims; selfesteem in relation to their strong social bonds has been lifted, whilst in relation to strangers it has decreased. This in turn has led to how they view themselves; ex-offenders have found a social identity that they can relate to and are pleased to have, whilst victims of crime do not feel as if their identity has changed but do admit to being more reserved than before the assault.

Abstract:
This study intends to compare victims' and the former criminal’s experiences of how the individual's identity has been shaped. The study is based on qualitative interviews with ten informants and intends to answer the question of how individuals perceive that their social ties and self-esteem has changed from being a criminal and victim. These questions are answered with the selected theoretical starting points that focus on Jenkins social identity theory. Further, Scheff's theory of social ties that are associated with feelings of shame and pride, even Johnson's theory of self-esteem is used that regulate the individual's well-being. The results show obvious differences between the victims' and former criminals experiences of crime. The social environment is considered to have a significant role in their different experiences and has particularly an impact on the individuals' identity. It may even be noted that the social ties are an important factor in an individual's well-being and has an impact on the individual's self-esteem.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the role of nationalism in the former Yugoslavia conflicts, with focus on the most involved parts: Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The conflict was characterized by extensive ethnic cleansing between all ethnic groups (Muslims, Croats and Serbs). This study looks at three different nationalism theories formulated by Ernest Gellner, Benedict Anderson and Thomas Hylland Eriksen through a case study of former Yugoslavia. When the president of former Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito died and the communism in Europe was brought to an end Yugoslavia went towards its disintegration. This is when nationalism and ethnic separatism begins. When the nationalism powers won in the elections of 1990, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence. Both republics had a Serbian minority which was in interest for the dream of creating a Great Serbia. Serbian nationalists declared their independence in these minorities and the conflicts lead to war, first between Croatia and Serbia and later in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The conflict in former Yugoslavia has its roots in various political, cultural, ethnical and religious problems. Ethnic cleansing on the civil people from all ethnic groups started and the ethnic nationalism in the conflicts led to war between three nationalities.

Abstract:
AbstractThe multidimensionality and interpersonal dimension of human sexuality make the study of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) a challenge. The aspiration to pursue a patient-centered, holistic approach collides with the need to establish commonly accepted diagnostic criteria for different disturbances in sexual functioning, involving one or multiple phases of the sexual response cycle and pain associated with sexual activity. According to recently proposed classifications, which are continuously evolving, the most relevant FSDs include hypoactive sexual desire disorder, female arousal disorder, persistent genital arousal disorder, and female orgasm disorder. The present chapter aims to provide a clinical perspective on these disorders by reviewing the most recent evidence on the pathophysiology, definitions, prevalence, leading etiologies, diagnostic tools, and key therapeutic approaches. Sexual pain-related conditions will be reviewed in another chapter. It is evident that a gender bias still exists, with prominent biological etiologies of FSDs being neglected and understudied at the expense of psychodynamic and relational determinants. Moreover, classifications should serve to advocate the advancement of our knowledge of female sexual functioning. This process goes through the practical translation of the updated nosology in a language that is intelligible to primary healthcare providers all over the world, and ultimately, to women.

Abstract:
Abstract Low Reynolds number flow (Re = 100) over a slitted 2D cylinder was examined to analyze the flow characteristics within the slit and the role it plays on the shedding frequency. The goal of this work is to explore the enhancement of the lift and reduction of the drag for energy harvesting purposes. One way of achieving this goal is by controlling the separation of the incompressible laminar boundary layer through blowing and suction. However, in this work it is passively controlled by the cylinder slit. Different slit orientation (azimuth angles: 0, π/12, π/6, π/4, 5π/12, and π/2) at 10% slit-to-diameter ratio was considered. The work was carried out numerically by seeking solution to the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. Validation was done experimentally utilizing the 2D vertical soap film tunnel available in our laboratory at Khalifa University. The visualization in soap film tunnel exploits the optical properties of soap film and relies on the wake formation patterns and the frequency at which vortices shed using well developed imaging techniques. These flow visualizations of the vortex shedding behind the cylinder with and without slit were recorded and analyzed to infer its Strouhal number (St = f.D/U). From the common Roshko’s graph (Re vs St) the Reynolds number was determined, and the film property was evaluated. Using common flow as baseline the technique can be used to validate numerous 2D-flow simulations, airfoils, bluff bodies, and even the oscillating flow around them. The details of the soap-film technique and parameters for successful experimentation are provided and demonstrated on slitted cylinder. The results are validated using numerical technique and the results from the literature.

Abstract:
Improved detection of natural gas leaks is of interest to the gas industry. At present, gas survey trucks sample the air at the street surface. The air is then fed through a flame ionization detector (FID) for the detection of methane that may have leaked from a gas line below the street. This method is relatively slow, because the truck can move only a few miles per hour, and is limited in that it cannot make remote measurements of areas that are inaccessible to the truck. Furthermore, the FID reacts to any hydrocarbon in the air, causing false alarms.

Abstract:
Low Plasticity Burnishing (LPB) is now established as a surface enhancement technology capable of introducing through-thickness compressive residual stresses in the edges of gas turbine engine blades and vanes to mitigate foreign object damage (FOD). The “Fatigue Design Diagram” (FDD) method has been described and demonstrated to determine the depth and magnitude of compression required to achieve the optimum high cycle fatigue (HCF) strength, and to mitigate a given depth of damage characterized by the fatigue stress concentration factor, kf. LPB surface treatment technology and the FDD method have been combined to successfully mitigate a wide variety of surface damage ranging from FOD to corrosion pits in titanium and steel gas turbine engine compressor and fan components. LPB mitigation of fretting induced damage in Ti-6AL-4V in laboratory samples has now been extended to fan and compressor components. LPB tooling technology recently developed to allow the processing of the pressure faces of fan and compressor blade dovetails and mating disk slots is described. Fretting induced micro-cracks that form at the pressure face edge of bedding on both the blade dovetail and the dovetail disk slots in Ti-6-4 compressor components can now be arrested by the introduction of deep stable compression in conventional CNC machine tools during manufacture or overhaul. The compressive residual stress field design method employing the FDD approach developed at Lambda Technologies is described in application to mitigate fretting damage. The depth and magnitude of compression and the fatigue and damage tolerance achieved are presented. It was found that microcracks as deep as 0.030 in., (0.75 mm) large enough to be readily detected by current NDI technology, can be fully arrested by LPB. The depth of compression achieved could allow NDI screening followed by LPB processing of critical components to reliably restore fatigue performance and extend component life.

Abstract:
Abstract A novel Flow Control Device (FCD) for Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) production wells is presented. This device increases the thermal efficiency of the process and accelerates bitumen recovery by passively increasing its flow resistance as the produced fluid's subcool decreases. Passive FCDs have been widely employed in SAGD applications to reduce the cumulative steam/oil ratio (C-SOR) and increase bitumen production. These passive devices react to density and/or viscosity changes of the produced fluid but do not select against steam. However, the novel FCD presented in this paper reacts specifically to the subcool of the produced fluid and offers a greater restriction as the produced fluid approaches the saturation curve and attains a steam component. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental data have been used to minimize frictional pressure loss through the FCD while inducing subcool choking in pressures and flow rates typical of SAGD wells. Selected test data clearly shows that the novel FCD increases its resistance sharply as the subcool approaches zero and as a steam component becomes present in the produced fluid. From initial hot water testing and extensive steam testing, a mechanistic model has been developed that uses physics and geometry to predict the performance of the device under a wide variety of thermodynamic conditions. The test data and this model were fed into numerical reservoir simulators to visualize the effects of this device in a typical SAGD completion. These simulations clearly show improved C-SOR and a more fully developed steam chamber for completions that utilize this novel FCD. The novelty of this FCD is its proactive, yet passive, means of preventing steam production in SAGD wells. By preferring more subcooled fluid – either cooler or higher pressure – steam breakthrough and hot-spotting will be prevented or controlled, downhole equipment will be protected, and the SOR will be reduced. The thorough, mechanistic model for the new FCD allows for accurate interpolation and meaningful extrapolation, along with seamless integration with reservoir simulators to evaluate deployment strategy on a case-by-case basis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Sub-Regional Representation for South East Asia (OIE SRR-SEA) implemented the Stop Transboundary Animal Diseases and Zoonoses (STANDZ) Programme funded by AusAID to strengthen the veterinary services and effectively manage the control and eradication of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar. The purpose of the study is to understand how FMD outbreaks impact smallholder farmers, both men and women, at the household and village level and how control and eradication of FMD would benefit them. Specific aims are to estimate the direct and indirect socio-economic costs associated with the outbreaks of FMD as well as of the measures taken by farmers to deal with such outbreaks and to identify issues that contributed to the socio-economic impacts of FMD outbreaks and opportunities to reduce them.
