Abstract:
The article presents the methodology of organizing educational activities to study a writer’s biography with the help of facilitation approach. A key aspect of the paper is the group work model, i.e., “The World Café” which allowed the authors to process and comprehend a large amount of information about F.M. Dostoevsky, share it with students, and plan further work on the study of his creative writing. In addition, the article identifies important concepts in the comprehension of the first part of the posthumous biography “The materials for the biography of F.M. Dostoevsky”. The compiler of the biography was O.F. Miller, a professor of literature in St. Petersburg University (Russia), critic, publicist, and a famous educator of the 19th century. Interestingly, “Materials for the biography of F.M. Dostoevsky”, published in 1883, were not fully republished and did not receive sufficient scientific understanding until 2010, even though the work of O.F. Miller remained the main source the experts studying F.M. Dostoevsky. Of much importance is the fact that some parts of “Materials for the biography of F.M. Dostoevsky” appeared on the Internet only after 2012. This paradox highlights the importance of the research describing the biography. In 2010, the personal history “Materials for the biography of F.M. Dostoevsky” became an integral part of the academic thesis by K.A. Okisheva “F.M. Dostoevsky and O.F. Miller: the history of relationships”. Our present study highlights the importance of biographies for the education of young generations. Our major concern is the methodology, according to which personal history’s information serves as an essential part of roundtable discussions which simultaneously target the acquisition of F.M. Dostoevsky’s biography and innovative classroom activities.

Abstract:
The paper discusses F.M. Dostoevsky’s attitude towards the Crimean military campaign (1853–1856) and his understanding of the deep meaning of the armed conflict between Russia and the alliance which included the British, French, and Ottoman Empires, as well as the Kingdom of Sardinia. It is argued that F.M. Dostoevsky may be called a “child of the Crimean campaign,” even though he did not participate in it personally, as he remained, all through those months, first a convict and then an exile. However, it was the Crimean campaign that stimulated him to ponder about Russia’s position in the world and about Russia’s geopolitical interests. The Crimean campaign was also well “remembered” by many characters in F.M. Dostoevsky’s novels. The central theme of the paper is the destiny of the three poems that Dostoevsky wrote during his exile in the town of Semipalatinsk. In those poems, the author pointedly presented his evaluation of the events which formed and defined the basis of his worldview. It is sometimes claimed that the main purpose of writing those poems was just pragmatic, allegedly caused by the plight of the author and his desperate desire to come back to literature at any cost. In this paper, this claim is refuted. Especially emphasized is F.M. Dostoevsky’s later avowal that at the very time of the military confrontation he, even though a convict, wished Russia’s victory and not Russia’s defeat. Next, the paper analyses the utterances about the Crimean war by some like-minded contemporaries of F.M. Dostoevsky (the poets F.M. Tyutchev and A.N. Maykov, the historian N.Ya. Danilevsky) as compared with positions of intellectuals and politicians in Europe. F.M. Dostoevsky rejects the assertion that Russia suffered a humiliating defeat in the Crimean war, an assertion that was firmly rooted in the public consciousness and, for many years, taken almost as a universally recognized truth.

Abstract:
Background The continuous establishment of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations across multiple generations has led to the limited impact of soil phosphorus (P) on tree growth. This challenge poses a significant obstacle in maintaining the sustainable management of Chinese fir. Methods To investigate the effects of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the growth and physiological characteristics of Chinese fir under different P supply treatments. We conducted an indoor pot simulation experiment in the greenhouse of the Forestry College of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University with one-and-half-year-old seedlings of Chinese fir from March 2019 to June 2019, with the two P level treatment groups included a normal P supply treatment (1.0 mmol L−1 KH2PO4, P1) and a no P supply treatment (0 mmol L−1 KH2PO4, P0). P0 and P1 were inoculated with Funneliformis mosseae (F.m) or Rhizophagus intraradices (R.i) or not inoculated with AMF treatment. The AMF colonization rate in the root system, seedling height (SH), root collar diameter (RCD) growth, chlorophyll (Chl) photosynthetic characteristics, enzyme activities, and endogenous hormone contents of Chinese fir were estimated. Results The results showed that the colonization rate of F.m in the roots of Chinese fir seedlings was the highest at P0, up to 85.14%, which was 1.66 times that of P1. Under P0 and P1 treatment, root inoculation with either F.m or R.i promoted SH growth, the SH of R.i treatment was 1.38 times and 1.05 times that of F.m treatment, respectively. In the P1 treatment, root inoculation with either F.m or R.i inhibited RCD growth. R.i inhibited RCD growth more aggressively than F.m. In the P0 treatment, root inoculation with F.m and R.i reduced the inhibitory effect of phosphorus deficiency on RCD. At this time, there was no significant difference in RCD between F.m, R.i and CK treatments (p < 0.05). AMF inoculation increased Fm, Fv, Fv/Fm, and Fv/Fo during the chlorophyll fluorescence response in the tested Chinese fir seedlings. Under the two phosphorus supply levels, the trend of Fv and Fm of Chinese fir seedlings in different treatment groups was F.m > R.i > CK. Under P0 treatment, The values of Fv were 235.86, 221.86 and 147.71, respectively. The values of Fm were 287.57, 275.71 and 201.57, respectively. It increased the antioxidant enzyme activity and reduced the leaf’s malondialdehyde (MDA) content to a certain extent. Conclusion It is concluded that AMF can enhance the photosynthetic capacity of the host, regulate the distribution of endogenous hormones in plants, and promote plant growth by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. When the P supply is insufficient, AMF is more helpful to plants, and R.i is more effective than F.m in alleviating P starvation stress in Chinese fir.

This article presents an overview of the works of scientists and critics about the life and work of F.M. Dostoevsky. Fyodor Dostoevsky's personosphere occupies a special place in the Russian national-cultural space; his novels reflect the national reality and convey the national values of Russian people; his characters symbolize the national Russian character. The high frequency of the manifestation of the conceptual category of extremes in various spheres of the individual personosphere of F.M. Dostoevsky is revealed: in the facts of Dostoevsky's biography and their reflection in the writer's works; Russian language culture is reflected in the creative method of F.M. Dostoevsky; in the character and actions of F.M. Dostoevsky's characters as frequent images of the writer's personal personosphere; when describing extreme situations in the life of characters in works of fiction; when reflecting the Russian character, Russian linguistic culture through Dostoevsky's characters (which also confirms that the manifestation of extremes is characteristic of Russian linguistic culture).

Abstract:
This thesis F. M. Dostoevsky: The Idiot deals with the life of the author with an emphasis on his work, which is always current, because it concerns itself with increasingly vital topics related to human life. The thesis also deals with issues that are key to understanding Dostoevsky and his perception of the world and discusses the previous staging of the play in the Czech Republic, focusing on the work of the director Miroslav Krobot. Primarily, however, this thesis represents a detailed analysis of Dostoevsky's The Idiot and a detailed analysis of the individual dramatic characters within the play, with a focus on their internal processes and relationships, which are then expressed through costume.

Den, Heijer Francois Malan. "Development of an active pitch control system for wind turbines / F.M. den Heijer." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/2635.

Full text
Abstract:
A wind turbine needs to be controlled to ensure its safe and optimal operation, especially during high wind speeds. The most common control objectives are to limit the power and rotational speed of the wind turbine by using pitch control. Aero Energy is a company based in Potchefstroom, South Africa, that has been developing and manufacturing wind turbine blades since 2000. Their most popular product is the AE1kW blades. The blades have a tendency to over-speed in high wind speeds and the cut-in wind speed must be improved. The objective of this study was to develop an active pitch control system for wind turbines. A prototype active pitch control system had to be developed for the AE1kW blades. The objectives of the control system are to protect the wind turbine from over-speeding and to improve start-up performance. An accurate model was firstly developed to predict a wind turbine’s performance with active pitch control. The active pitch control was implemented by means of a two-stage centrifugal governor. The governor uses negative or stalling pitch control. The first linear stage uses a soft spring to provide improved start-up performance. The second non-linear stage uses a hard spring to provide over-speed protection. The governor was manufactured and then tested with the AE1kW blades. The governor achieved both the control objectives of over-speed protection and improved start-up performance. The models were validated by the results. It was established that the two-stage centrifugal governor concept can be implemented on any wind turbine, provided the blades and tower are strong enough to handle the thrust forces associated with negative pitch control. It was recommended that an active pitch control system be developed that uses positive pitching for the over-speed protection, which will eliminate the large thrust forces. Keywords: pitch control, wind turbine, centrifugal governor, over-speed protection, cut-in wind speed, blade element-momentum theory, rotor, generator, stall, feathering.

Abstract:
The aim of my work is to show the results of my research about the influence exerted by the Tacitus' Annals on the composition of Dostoevsky's novel The Devils. This research is part of the debate on the relations between Dostoevsky and Classical literature raised by V. Ivanov, L. Shestov, S. Bulgakov, N.Berdjaev. This field of study has been recently renewed, among the others, by T. Molchukova and Hyung Goo Lee as regards the passion of the novelist to the Homeric epics, by T. Popovich and G. Rosenshield on the similarities with Aeschilean and Sophoclean tragedy, by V. Dudkin on the similarities with Aristophanean comedy and by D.H.Larmour concerning Orpheus' myth and Foma Fomich. An aspect which has not been really taken into account by the critics is the connection between Latin historiography, in particular Tacitus, and the works of Dostoevsky. However, in his Diary of a writer (1876) Dostoevsky draws an immediate link between lawyer V. Spasovich (the model for the character of Fetyukovich) and the Tacitean Vibulenus. The passion of the Russian writer for Tacitean historiography derived not only from a direct reading of Tacitus in French translation with facing Latin text, but also from the mediation of N. Karamzin’s and A.S. Pushkin’s works. This work proposes an analysis of The Devils highlighting how Dostoevsky's style reveals the influence of the Annals in the narrator's delineation of characters and plot development, in order to address fundamental issues such as the role of the usurper and suicide. My purpose is to demonstrate that the dialogue between the Russian intelligentsia and Tacitus, begun by Karamzin and Pushkin, finds in Dostoevsky its ultimate fulfillment.

Abstract:
Could one consider the Pilos episode narrated in the Book IV of Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War, an Athenian reversal (peripéteia)? An assumption, whose provocative tone, would imply to the mythical categories in the episode the artistic moulding of Thucydides narrative. The mythistorical passages of the work, as interpreted by Francis M. Cornford are, therefore, a consequence of the tragic theory of human nature, which Thucydides would have taken from Aeschylus, and where Tyche, Ate, Apathe, Elpis and Hybris would represent the beginning of Athens political doom. Thucydides writing style, intentionally an objective journal of the war, ended up being similar to the dramatic one. But how could one accept this possibility, if in Thucydides Prologue he states the absolute exclusion of the fabulous ( ) from his narrative? In which sense can the concept of mythôdes be taken as the one of mthos. In the memorization of the human actions Thucydides history turns to the fragility of this humanity, revealing the face of its own tragic condition.

Zeschky, Jan Frederik. "Unlocking the psychology of character : imagery of the subconscious in the works of F.M. Dostoevskii." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/827/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines imagery of the subconscious throughout the works of Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevskii and how it can be used to analyse the psychology of his characters and the author himself. While studies exist on the role of, for example, dreams in Dostoevskii’s works, this thesis aims to comprehensively examine the author’s experience and use of subconscious phenomena as a whole, and their most important role in his texts: their effect on the characters who experience them. In each chapter, one form of this imagery in Dostoevskii’s works is explained and analysed with respect to individual characters or themes, and then Dostoevskii’s own experiences of the relevant subconscious phenomenon are explored. Chapter 1 looks at imagery arising through characters’ daydreams, while the author’s recurrent theme of childhood memories is also analysed as a type of nostalgic daydream. Chapter 2 examines the ‘greyer’ area of dreamlike reality, which in itself operates at two poles: confusion between dream and reality; and reality so intense as to appear unreal. The role of the ‘unreal’ city of St Petersburg is also analysed, as well as Dostoevskii’s narrative mode of ‘fantastic realism’. Chapter 3 looks at characters’ hallucinations, while Chapter 4 focuses on the character of Goliadkin in Двойник and his decline into split personality. Chapter 5 analyses the imagery of dreams, be they of anxiety and warning, of catharsis and peripeteia, or those featuring Dostoevskii’s recurring motif of the ‘Golden Age’ of mankind. The final chapter differs slightly in form by focusing on the overarching condition of epilepsy. Analysis of the author’s principal epileptic character, Prince Myshkin in Идиот, reveals the ‘deepest’ point of subconscious imagery, the ecstatic aura. Upon examining the condition’s recorded effects on Dostoevskii, epilepsy is ultimately discerned as the origin of many of the author’s experiences of subconscious phenomena and, in turn, the imagery of the subconscious used in his works. Moreover, experiences of subconscious phenomena are found to be a vital source of literary inspiration and motivation for Dostoevskii; so the correlating imagery of the subconscious is thus able to reveal fictional characters’ deepest drives and can be used as a means to glean vital, otherwise unseen, insights into their psychology.

Abstract:
A software package has been created and has been developing for a number of years, the work of textologists studying the handwritten archive of F.M. Dostoevsky. The portal "Archive of F.M. Dostoevsky" combines the results of several projects using a single primary data array – digital copies of pages of nineteen handwritten notebooks of F.M. Dostoevsky with corresponding text transcripts (more than 3000 pages). Software interpretation of text markup allows you to interactively identify layers of author's edits. Currently, work is underway to create a corpus of graphic samples, software solutions have been implemented that provide online tools for creating, web publishing and flexibly displaying a library of graphic samples. The database of graphic samples is being updated, the possibilities of viewing and filtering materials are being developed. The results of the work will provide a basis for further research work.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to determine the features of the structure and functioning of the fear motive in F.M. Dostoevsky’s “fantastic story” “The Dream of a Ridiculous Man” and in A. Petrov’s cartoon of the same name. The report first examines the images, details, etc., with which the fear motive is created in the story, and then analyzes the ways of embodying this motive and transmitting a certain frightening atmosphere in the cinema. There is revealed and determined the ontological significance and the main character of fear in the “The Dream of a Ridiculous Man”, which, in our opinion, manifests itself in the fundamental nature and primacy of this feeling in human nature. It can be observed in the transition from the dream world, not defiled by the fall, to the terrible reality of St. Petersburg, described in the story. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that a comprehensive analysis of the fear motive in the story of F. M. Dostoevsky and the peculiarities of the interpretation of this motive in the animated film by A. Petrov has not been carried out before. The study revealed, firstly, a number of repetitive means by which the fear motive is formed in both works (and their functions were determined), and secondly, there was noted the originality of the representation of the analyzed motive in the cinema.

Abstract:
The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) was a core partner on the Population Council’s Evidence to End FGM/C: Research to Help Girls and Women Thrive—a UKAID-funded research program to help end female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) within one generation. Their role was to build the consortium’s capacity for research utilization and to develop innovative tools and products to improve how researchers communicate their findings about FGM/C to key decisionmakers. This reference guide aims to help researchers, advocates, program managers, and policymakers understand, interpret, and use the latest FGM/C data.
