Abstract:
We construct an infinite word w over the 5-letter alphabet such that for every factor f of w of length at least two, there exists a cyclic permutation of f that is not a factor of w. In other words, w does not contain a non-trivial conjugacy class. This proves the conjecture in Gamard et al. [Theoret. Comput. Sci. 726 (2018) 1–4].

Abstract:
A laboratory experiment was conducted at Department of Seed Science and Technology, UAS Raichur to estimate ABA content in foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) using Phytodetek ABA Test Kit. ABA estimation in millets is helpful to trace out the reason behind the dormancy in millets and is less explored. Nine genotypes were studied in the present investigation. Among the foxtail millet genotypes, the highest dormancy duration of 35 days was observed in two genotypes viz., DHFt-4-5 and DHFt-5-3 and slight dormancy was noticed in the genotype DHFt- 35-1. The genotype DHFt-35-1 recorded lowest ABA concentration of 3.199 pmol/g f. w. followed by genotypes DHFt-2-5 and DHFt-2-5-1 (3.266 and 3.291 pmol/g f. w. respectively). Highest ABA concentration was found in DHFt-5-3 (3.404 pmol/g f. w.) followed by DHFt-4-5 (3.396 pmol/g f. w.). Thus it was concluded that ABA in millet seeds makes them ‘climate smart crops’ and during the climate change regime, it is only millets that can ensure India’s food and nutrition needs in future.

Abstract:
Seven healthy male volunteers exercised on a cycle ergometer at 50 +/- 5% VO2max for 180 min, on three occasions during which they ingested either water only (W), [13C]glucose (G), or [13C]fructose (F) (140 +/- 12 g, diluted at 7% in water, and evenly distributed over the exercise period). Blood glucose concentration (in mM) significantly decreased during exercise with W (5.1 +/- 0.4 to 4.2 +/- 0.1) but remained stable with G (5.0 +/- 0.4 to 5.3 +/- 0.6) or F ingestion (5.4 +/- 0.5 to 5.1 +/- 0.4). Decreases in plasma insulin concentration (microU/ml) were greater (P less than 0.05) with W (11 +/- 3 to 3 +/- 1) and F (12 +/- 4 to 5 +/- 1) than with G ingestion (11 +/- 2 to 9 +/- 5), and fat utilization was greater with F (103 +/- 11 g) than with G ingestion (82 +/- 9 g) and lower than with W ingestion (132 +/- 14 g). However F was less readily available for combustion than G; over the 3-h period 75% (106 +/- 11 g) of ingested G was oxidized, compared with 56% (79 +/- 8 g) of ingested fructose. As a consequence, carbohydrate store utilizations were similar in the two conditions (G, 174 +/- 20 g; F, 173 +/- 17 g; vs. W, 193 +/- 22 g). These observations suggest that, during prolonged moderate exercise, F ingestion maintains blood glucose as well as G ingestion, and increases fat utilization when compared to G ingestion. However, due to a slower rate of utilization of F, carbohydrate store sparing is similar with G and F ingestions.

Abstract:
In the Book of Daniel human kingdoms are presented in the context of bistory, especially in the four-kingdom schema (Dan 2 and 7) which depicts the rise and fali of kings and kingdoms. The theme of Dan 1-6 is that human kingdoms are transitory. Gentile kings bring about their downfali by arrogance and idolatry (i.e. Dan 5). The ultimate kingdom will be set up by God. In the Book o f Daniel the kingdom o f G od provides the frame for human bistory. In the end God will establish his kingdom, but for the time being He bas given dominion over the earth to worldly kings. From this perspective, earthly monarchs must recognize God as a sovereign over human kingdoms. If pagan kings do it, the kingdom is restored to them (i.e. Dan 4); if they refuse, the royal power is taken away from them (i.e. Dan 5). In the apocalyptic visions (Dan 8-12) this situation is completely different. Human kingdoms revolt against God. Ali visions contain a review of history prior to Antiochus Epiphanes, focus on his career and predict his fali caused by divine power. Antiochus Epiphanes is portrayed as a symbol o f evil because o f his rebelii on against God, revealed in the desecration of the tempie and the persecution o f the faithful Jewś. As a result, pagan kings and kingdoms will be annihilated and God will show his power.

The origin and evolution of contact (W UMa) binaries are discussed with the help of the braking law of eq.(1). Best observationally justified parameter-values in (1) for W UMa, CV and LMXB binaries are: α ≈ 1.5, γ = 2 and f computed from eq.(2). A semi-empirical relation (eq.(5)) between the scaled magnetic torque and the fractional X-ray luminosity is proposed. Abstract:
Assessment of the long-term impact of fertilizers and other management factors on crop production and environmental sustainability of cropping systems in the semi-arid Canadian prairies is needed. This paper discusses the long-term influence of N and P fertilizers on crop production, N uptake and water use of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and the effect of the preceding crop type [flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) and fall rye (Secale cereale L.)] on wheat grown on a medium-textured, Orthic Brown Chernozem at Swift Current, Saskatchewan. We analysed 36 yr of results (1967–2002) from eight crop rotation-fertility treatments: viz., fallow-wheat receiving N and P (F-W, N + P), three F-W-W treatments fertilized with (i) N + P, (ii) P only, and (iii) N only; two other 3-yr mixed rotations with N + P (i) F-flax-W (F-Flx-W) and (ii) F-fall rye-W (F-Rye-W); and two continuous wheat rotations (Cont W), one receiving N + P and the other only P. Growing season weather conditions during the 36-yr period were near the long-term mean, but the first 22 yr were generally drier than normal while the last 14 yr (1989–2002) had average to above-average growing conditions. This was partly responsible for grain and N yield being greater in the latter period than in the first 22 yr. The 36-yr average response of wheat grown on fallow to P fertilizer was 339 kg ha-1, while the response to N fertilizer over this period was only 123 kg ha-1. The 36-yr average response of wheat grown on stubble to N was 344 kg ha-1 for F-W-(W) and 393 kg ha-1 for Cont W. Neither flax nor fall rye influenced the yield response of the following wheat crops. Annualized grain production for F-W (N + P), F-W-W (+ N) and F-W-W (+ P) rotations were similar (1130 kg ha-1 yr-1); this was about 15% lower than for F-W-W (N + P), 40% lower than for Cont W (N + P), and 5% lower than for Cont W (+ P). Annualized aboveground N yield for Cont W (N + P) was 57% higher than for Cont W (+ P). Regressions were developed relating straw to grain yields for wheat, flax and fall rye. The amount of NO3-N left in the soil was directly related to amount of N applied and inversely to N removed in the crop. Thus, F-(W)-W (+ N) left about 28% more NO3-N in the rooting zone than F-(W)-W (N + P), while F-W-(W) (N + P) left 20% more than F-W-(W) (+ P), and Cont W (N + P) left 39% more than Cont W (+ P). F-Rye-W (N + P) left much less NO3-N in the soil than any other fallow-containing system and similar amounts to Cont W (N + P). In this paper, we characterize those A for which ∥A∥E,F are determined by their actions on decreasing sequences, where E and F are suitable normed Riesz spaces of sequences. In particular, our results can apply to the following spaces: ℓp, d(w, p), and ℓp(w). The results established here generalize ones given by Bennett; Chen, Luor, and Ou; Jameson; and Jameson and Lashkaripour.

Abstract:
Society’s desire to sequester C in soils, thereby reducing the net loss of CO2 (a greenhouse gas) to the atmosphere, is well known. It is also accepted that the choice of appropriate agricultural management practices adopted by producers will affect this goal. However, quantification of the extent and rate at which it can be achieved is uncertain. A crop rotation experiment that was initiated in 1957 on a thin Black chernozemic clay soil at Indian Head, Saskatchewan, was managed using conventional tillage until changed to zero tillage in 1990. Soil was sampled (0- to 7.5- and 7.5- to 15-cm depths) in May 1987 and 1997 to determine the effects of treatments on soil organic C (SOC) and total N. The rotations were: fallow-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (F-W), F-W-W, continuous wheat (Cont W), legume green manure (GM)-W-W, and F-W-W-hay (legume-grass)-hay-hay (F-W-W-H-H-H). The monoculture cereal rotations were either fertilized with N and P based on soil tests or unfertilized, while the legume systems were both unfertilized. There was also a F-W-W (N+P) treatment in which the straw was baled and removed. When the experiment was changed to zero tillage management in 1990, the fertilizer protocol was changed to satisfy the “moist soil” criteria. Consequently, higher rates of N and P were added thereafter to the fallow crop, resulting in a positive yield response of wheat grown on fallow, where before there was no response to fertilizer. Over the 10-yr period (1987-1997) fertilized soil gained C and N, but unfertilized soil did not. For example fertilized F-W, F-W-W and Cont W gained about 4, 5 and 2 Mg C ha–1 in the 10-yr period. During this period, C emissions from manufacture and transportation of N fertilizer was 0.28, 0.53 and 0.90. Mg ha–1 for these three rotations, respectively. These results suggest that without adequate fertility, conversion to zero tillage may not always result in an increase in soil C or N. By 1997, fertilizer increased soil C and N in F-W-W and Cont W, and soil C and N were greater in F-W-W-H-H-H than in GM-W-W and lowest in F-W-W (all unfertilized). Straw removal had no significant effect on C or N. The analysis showed that C inputs from crop residues was the main factor influencing SOC changes. Abstract:
Abstract This paper reviews application of the Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) to sardine (Sardinops sagax) off southern Australia between 1995 and 2019. Coefficients of variation (CVs) of estimates of spawning biomass (SB) were reduced from 23–59% to 8–12% by: (i) estimating mean daily egg production (P0), spawning fraction (S), and sex ratio (R) from all historical data rather than annually; and (ii) combining batch fecundity (F) and female weight (W) into a single parameter, relative fecundity (F′ = F^/W). Total daily egg production was estimated most precisely from annual estimates of spawning area (A) and estimates of P0 obtained from historical data. Both S and R were estimated most precisely from historical data. Estimating W and F from historical data did not increase precision. F′ had lower CVs than both W and F, and was stable across years and a wide range of W. Findings demonstrate that A can be converted into a precise estimates of SB using estimates of P0, S, R, and F′ obtained from historical data. However, the possibility that DEPM parameters may change in the future cannot be discounted. Future monitoring should include annual estimation of P0 and periodic (e.g. 3–5 years) re-estimation of adult parameters.

PROTECTION OF VICTIM’S RIGHTS IN THE POLISH PENAL LAWSummary The World Victimology Society was formed in 1979. That event greatly influenced the development of a study o f a victim and also initiated the movement for the wronged. Victim surveys conducted on the basis of self reporting enabled to define the concepts o f primary and secondary victimization. The surveys confirmed the fact that the implementation of an injured party protection is still inadequate. That subject matter was taken up by the VI Congress of the United Nations in 1985. The U N proclaimed the Declaration of Basic Laws for Victims of Crime and Abuse o f Authorities. In the part devoted to victims of crimes it lists four fundamental rights:a) a right of access to an administration of justice;b) a right to restoration;c) a right to compensation;d) a right to aid.The document also indicates the possibility to use mediation, arbitration, or conciliation and also the Polish legislator perceives the new trends o f punishment policy expressed in progressive regulations. As distinct from the hitherto role o f an injured party as a witness in his own case these regulations aim at securing an effective influence of an injured party on the course o f proceedings and a possibility to satisfy his claim.Currently, one o f the aims o f the Penal Code is an obligation to compensate for damages and to redress an injury sustained by an injured party. It is on the list of means of punishment together with a sanction imposing a payment to an injured or to the public purse and a pecuniary performance (article 39, point 5 of the Penal Code). It may not only complement a punishment, but also be its alternative. An obligation o f a perpetrator of an offence to redress an inflicted damage should also serve the appeasement of conflicts resulting from an unlawful conduct. It also allows a release on probation and an extraordinary mitigation of penalty. Therefore it serves a number of penal functions: o f compensation, resocialization, and education.

Abstract:
Objective To determine which mode and potency of electrocoagulation, using a modern electrosurgical generator, yields the smallest unobstructed area of the Fallopian tubes. Methods In an experimental study, tubes from 48 hysterectomies or tubal ligation were evaluated. Tubes were randomly allocated to one of the following groups: group A) 25 W x 5 seconds (n = 17); group B) 30 W x 5 seconds (n = 17); group C) 35 W x 5 seconds (n = 18), group D) 40 W x 5 seconds (n = 20); group E) 40 W x 5 seconds with visual inspection (blanch, swells, collapse) (n = 16); group F) 50 W x 5 seconds (n = 8). Bipolar electrocoagulation was performed in groups A to E, and monopolar electrocoagulation was performed in group F. Coagulation mode was used in all groups. Digital photomicrography of the transversal histological sections of the isthmic segment of the Fallopian tube were taken, and the median percentage of unobstructed luminal area (mm2) was measured with ImageJ software (ImageJ, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA). The Kruskal-Wallis test or analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for statistical analysis. Results Ninety-six Fallopian tube sections were analyzed. The smallest median occluded area (%; range) of the Fallopian tube was obtained in the group with 40 W with visual inspection (8.3%; 0.9–40%), followed by the groups 25 W (9.1%; 0–35.9%), 40 W (14.2; 0.9–43.2%), 30 W (14.2; 0.9–49.7%), 35 W (15.1; 3–46.4%) and 50 W (38.2; 3.1–51%). No statistically significant difference was found among groups (p = 0.09, Kruskal-Wallis test). Conclusion The smallest unobstructed area was obtained with power setting at 40 W with visual inspection using a modern electrosurgical generator. However, no statistically significant difference in the unobstructed area was observed among the groups using these different modes and potencies.

This study aimed to incorporate the herbal essential oils (Ziziphora tenuior L. (Z. tenuior), Ferulago angulata (F. angulata), and Bunium persicum (B. persicum)) all in three levels (5, 7, and 10% w/w) and tertiary butyl hydroquinone (100, 200, and 300 ppm) to evaluate the oxidation stability of Iranian animal oil (IAO). Z. tenuior, F. angulata, and B. persicum (5, 7, and 10% w/w) and tertiary butyl hydroquinone (100, 200, and 300 ppm) were added to IAO. The physicochemical properties and color analysis, and sensory characteristics (odor, taste, rancidity, and overall acceptability) of the treatments were investigated on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28. The results showed that increasing the amounts of Z. tenuior, F. angulata, and B. persicum was associated with reducing acid, peroxide, and thiobarbituric acid values. It also lowered brightness and yellowness while the oxidative stability of the IAO significantly was increasing. It was concluded that the incorporation of B. persicum had the highest effectiveness regarding the proposed criteria with the least effect on sensory properties.

Abstract:
Lipid classes and fatty acid compositions of the farmed (F-C. gigas) and wild (W-C. gigas) pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, in Nha Trang, Vietnam were investigated for the first time. The results indicated that the lipid classes and fatty acid components of these oysters were insignificantly different. The total lipid of both studied oysters included six lipid classes, namely phospholipid (PL), sterol (ST), free fatty acid (FFA), triacylglycerol (TG), monoalkyldiacylglycerol (MADG), and hydrocarbon-wax (HW) in which TG and PL were dominated with the values of 48.4%, 41.8% for TG and 19.0%, 20.3% for PL in F-C. gigas and W-C. gigas, respectively. The fatty acids (FAs) content of F-C. gigas and W-C. gigas was similar. The saturated fatty acids (SFAs) content was 48.2% in total fatty acids (TFAs) of the F-C. gigas and 44.7% in TFAs of W-C. gigas, in which 16:0 was dominated in SFAs of both oysters with the value of 24.2% in F-C. gigas and 22.0% in W-C. gigas. The contents of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were 18.3%, 20.5% for MUFAs and 31.7%, 34.7% for PUFAs respectively in F-C. gigas and W-C. gigas. These MUFAs compositions contained 16:1n-7, 16:1n-5, 18:1n-9, 18:1n-7, 20:1n-11, 20:1n-9 and 20:1n-7, among them fatty acids 16:1n-7 (7.2% in F-C. gigas, 6.3% in W-C. gigas) and 18:1n-7 (6.6% in F-C. gigas, 7.4% in W-C. gigas) were the main MUFAs. PUFAs in these two oysters consisted of long-chain n-3 and n-6 fatty acids, in which 20:5n-3 (EPA) and 22:6n-3 (DHA) were dominated with the values of 12.7%, 13.9% for EPA in F-C. gigas and 6.5%, 6.0% for DHA in W-C. gigas.

Abstract:
KSL-W peptide has demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal activity and inhibitory effects against oral biofilm. This study aimed to check out the effect of chlorhexidine (CLX) or KSL-W peptide-loaded poloxamer 407-based microemulsions for buccal delivery on Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) biofilm. The formulation (F) containing 10% copolymer poloxamer 407 dispersion (1%), 40% oleic acid and 50% PPG-5-CETETH-20 was characterized by polarized light microscopy (PLM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), rheology, bioadhesive and syringeability; and in the treatment of a biofilm produced by F. nucleatum. The darkfield images obtained by PLM and the SAXS curves with an extended peak indicated that the system was characteristic of microemulsions. In a continuous analysis, microemulsions exhibited Newtonian behavior. In frequency, the oscillatory analysis profile presented predominantly viscous behavior. Bioadhesive force detected in the analysis of F (7.4 ± 1.81 mN˙ s) and syringeability (17.83± 5.97 N · mm) being adequate values for buccal administration. After 4 h, KSL-W-loaded F shown over 20% higher effectiveness than chlorhexidine-loaded microemulsions. In conclusion, the KSL-W-loaded microemulsions showed a considerable reduction in F. nucleatum biofilm formation and presented promising structural properties for buccal drug delivery.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fusarium wilt of palms occurs worldwide, caused by different Fusarium oxysporum ff. spp. including F. oxysporum f. sp. elaeidis, F. oxysporum f. sp. canariensis, and F. oxysporum f. sp. albedinis (3). Prior to 2010, F. oxysporum f. sp. canariensis was the only palm infecting species known to occur in the United States. In 2010, isolates of F. oxysporum were reported from dying Syagrus romanzoffiana and Washingtonia robusta in Florida. Based on morphological and molecular data, as well as the unique host species affected by the pathogen, this fungus was determined to be a new forma specialis of F. oxysporum, designated f. sp. palmarum (1). The pathogen infects foliar tissue, causing complete necrosis of the crown and leading to tree death within 2 to 3 months. In June 2012, the Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (TPDDL) received a plant sample from a dying W. robusta palm, exhibiting reddish-brown stripes on the petiole with chlorotic and necrotic leaves, from an established palm in the landscape from Harris County, Texas. Fungal cultures were obtained from symptomatic foliar tissue and identified as F. oxysporum based on morphology. Microconidia were oval to reniform, 1- to 2-septate, measuring 5 to 18 × 2.5 to 5 μm. Phialides were short with microconidia produced in false heads. Macroconidia were curved and slender with a foot-shaped basal cell, usually 3-septate, and 22 to 37 × 2.5 to 5 μm. Chlamydospores were roundish and ranged from 7 to 13 μm in diameter. Fungal colonies had white to purple mycelia when grown on potato dextrose agar. DNA from a single spore culture was extracted, amplified by PCR using primers corresponding to a segment of the translation elongation factor 1α (EF-1α) gene, and the PCR product sequenced (2). Using the sequence alignment tool (BLASTn) in GenBank, the TPDDL's sequence (GenBank Accession No. KC897693) was aligned with EF-1α regions from F. oxysporum f. sp. palmarum isolates previously entered into the database ([1]; accessions GQ154455[=NRRL53544] and GQ154456[=NRRL46589]), revealing 100% homology between the isolates. Based on host source and sequence similarity, the fungus was tentatively identified as F. oxysporum f. sp. palmarum. Pathogenicity tests were performed on three leaf seedlings of W. robusta and W. filifera. Fifteen plants of each species were inoculated with the suspect isolate (designated KB2012) and 10 control plants were mock-inoculated as described by (1). Plants were grown in a greenhouse for 8 weeks post-inoculation. During this time, 83% of inoculated plants developed foliar lesions and died or severely declined, and all control plants remained healthy. F. oxysporum was recovered in culture from 100% of the symptomatic plants. DNA was extracted from fungal cultures, and EF-1α was amplified by PCR and sequenced, as described above. The amplicon was determined to share 100% homology with known F. oxysporum f. sp. palmarum isolates, confirming this fungus as the cause of disease in W. robusta. This is the first report of this pathogen in Texas, as well as the first report outside of Florida. This is also the first documentation of W. filifera as a host of this pathogen. References: (1) M. The fecundity of 100 gravid female fishes of Jat puti, Puntius sophore, was collected from the experimental ponds of the Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh was estimated during the period from June to August 2011. Collected samples were clustered month-wise: group A (collected in June), group B (collected in July) and group C (collected in August). The estimated fecundity ranged of 7951 to 17670; 8135 to 23053 and 12461 to 15105 eggs and the mean gonadosomatic index (GSI) of 23.44 ± 2.50; 30.47 ± 4.52 and 28.43 ± 2.99 was estimated for the fish group of A, B, and C, respectively. The relationship between fecundity and total length was linear and it was expressed as: Ln F= 1634 ln TL-1972; Ln F= 119405 ln TL-273.53 and Ln F= 1831.6 ln TL+ 825.31 in group A, B, and C, respectively. The regression equation between body weight and total length was linear and it was expressed as: Ln W= 2.2128 ln TL- 0.7048; Ln W= 2.0207 ln TL+ 0.3493 and Ln W= 1.4438 ln TL+ 5.5694, in group A, B, and C, respectively. The regression equation between body weight and fecundity was linear and it was expressed as: F= 656.84 W+199.96, F= 438.16 W+2470, F= 1116.1 W-3433.5, in group A, B, and C, respectively. Abstract:
The influence of temperature and leaf wetness duration on germination of sporangia and infection of cantaloupe leaves by Pseudoperonospora cubensis was examined in three independent controlled-environment experiments by inoculating plants with a spore suspension and exposing them to a range of leaf wetness durations (2 to 24 h) at six fixed temperatures (5 to 30°C). Germination of sporangia was assessed at the end of each wetness period and infection was evaluated from assessments of disease severity 5 days after inoculation. Three response surface models based on modified forms of the Weibull function were evaluated for their ability to describe germination of sporangia and infection in response to temperature and leaf wetness duration. The models estimated 15.7 to 17.3 and 19.5 to 21.7°C as the optimum temperature (t) range for germination and infection, respectively, with little germination or infection at 5 or 30°C. For wetness periods of 4 to 8 h, a distinct optimum for infection was observed at t = 20°C but broader optimum curves resulted from wetness periods >8 h. Model 1 of the form f(w,t) = f(t) × (1 – exp{–[B × w]D}) resulted in smaller asymptotic standard errors and yielded higher correlations between observed and predicted germination and infection data than either model 2 of the form f(w,t) = A(1 – exp{– [f(t) × (w – C)]D}) or model 3 of the form f(w,t) = [1 – exp{–(B × w)2}]/cosh[(t – F)G/2]. Models 1 and 2 had nonsignificant lack-of-fit test statistics for both germination and infection data, whereas a lack-of-fit test was significant for model 3. The models accounted for ≈87% (model 3) to 98% (model 1) of the total variation in the germination and infection data. In the validation of the models using data generated with a different isolate of P. cubensis, slopes of the regression line between observed and predicted germination and infection data were not significantly different (P > 0.2487) and correlation coefficients between observed and predicted values were high (r2 > 0.81). Models 1 and 2 were used to construct risk threshold charts that can be used to estimate the potential risk for infection based on observed or forecasted temperature and leaf wetness duration.

Abstract:
This work reports on a new TBO–Pluronic F–127 three-dimensional (3D) gel dosimeter for UV light dose distribution measurements. The optimal gel composition was found to be 60 µM Toluidine Blue O (TBO), which acts as a UV-sensitive compound; 5% w/w hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is necessary for initiation of TBO photodegradation and 25% w/w poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic F–127), which forms a physical gel matrix. The dosimeter becomes discoloured when exposed to UV radiation and a discolouration is the more intense, the higher the absorbed dose is. The samples after irradiation with UVA, UVB and UVC radiation were measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry to obtain the basic dose–response characteristic of the dosimeter, including dose sensitivity, linear and dynamic dose range, threshold dose, stability over time and dose–response for fractioned and non-fractioned doses. Additionally, the TBO–Pluronic F–127 gel dosimeter was investigated for spatial stability and the ability to measure the dose distribution of UV radiation. The results obtained indicate that the TBO–Pluronic F–127 dosimeter is a promising UV sensor and 2D/3D UV dosimeter.

Sucrose, 5% and 10% (w/v), supplemented with between 0 and 5 ppm fluoride (F), was tested for its influence in vitro on plaque-induced experimental in vitro enamel caries and plaque pH. Plaque growth on bovine enamel was initiated from saliva inocula and sustained in a multiple plaque growth system for up to 31 days by means of a basal medium with periodic applications of sucrose or sucrose supplemented with F. Change in enamel mineralization was assessed, before and after plaque growth, by microhardness testing and microradiography; pH was monitored with microelectrodes. It was found that enamel demineralization was inversely related to the F concentration in the range 2 to 5 ppm, for both 5% and 10% sucrose. Plaque pH responses were unaffected by the F supplements.

Abstract:
Sheep (<em>Ovis aries </em>L<em>.</em>) grazing, a cost-effective method of weed control compared with herbicide application and tillage, may influence soil C fractions by consuming crop residue and weeds and returning C through feces and urine to the soil. We examined the effect of three weed management practices (sheep grazing, herbicide application, and tillage) and two cropping sequences (continuous spring wheat [<em>Triticum aestivum </em>L.] [CSW] and spring wheat-pea [<em>Pisum sativum </em>L.]/barley [<em>Hordeum vulgare </em>L.] mixture hay-fallow [W-P/B-F]) on soil microbial biomass C (MBC), potential C mineralization (PCM), and particulate organic C (POC) in relation to soil organic C (SOC) at the 0- to 30-cm depth from 2009 to 2011 in southwestern Montana. The MBC at 0 to 5 cm was greater with tillage on CSW than tillage on W-P/B-F in 2009 and 2011, but was greater with herbicide application on CSW than tillage on CSW in 2010. The POC at 0 to 5 cm and 15 to 30 cm was greater with sheep grazing than herbicide application on CSW and W-P/B-F, but at 5 to 15 cm was greater with grazing on CSW. The MBC, PCM, and POC at all depths decreased from 2009 to 2011. Crop residue incorporation into the soil increased MBC with tillage on CSW. Lower proportions of labile than nonlabile organic matter through feces and urine probably reduced MBC at the soil surface, but increased POC with sheep grazing compared with herbicide application on CSW and W-P/B-F. Sheep grazing may increase coarse soil organic matter compared with microbial biomass in dryland cropping systems.

Abstract. In August 2000, a new ionospheric sounding station was established at Sao Jose dos Campos (23.2° S, 45.9° W; dip latitude 17.6° S), Brazil, by the University of Vale do Paraiba (UNIVAP). Another ionospheric sounding station was established at Palmas (10.2° S, 48.2° W; dip latitude 5.5° S), Brazil, in April 2002, by UNIVAP in collaboration with the Lutheran University Center of Palmas (CEULP), Lutheran University of Brazil (ULBRA). Both the stations are equipped with digital ionosonde of the type known as Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde (CADI). In order to study the effects of geomagnetic storms on equatorial spread-F, we present and discuss three case studies, two from the ionospheric sounding observations at Sao Jose dos Campos (September and November 2000) and one from the simultaneous ionospheric sounding observations at Sao Jose dos Campos and Palmas (July 2003). Salient features from these ionospheric observations are presented and discussed in this paper. It has been observed that sometimes (e.g. 4-5 November 2000) the geomagnetic storm acts as an inhibitor (high strong spread-F season), whereas at other times (e.g. 11-12 July 2003) they act as an initiator (low strong spread-F season), possibly due to corresponding changes in the quiet and disturbed drift patterns during different seasons.

Abstract:
Soil organic matter is important because it influences the productivity and physical well-being of soils. Recently, increased attention has focussed on soil organic matter as a possible sink for C02-C. Despite this interest, there is a lack of data for quantifying the effect of tillage on soil organic matter. Between 1981 and 1994, two tillage experiments were conducted at Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on Swinton loam, an Orthic Brown Chernozemic soil. Organic C and N were monitored periodically to quantify the effects of crop rotation [continuous spring wheat (Cont W) (Triticum aestivum L.) vs. fallow–wheat (F-W)] and tillage management [no-tillage (NT) vs. conventional tillage (CT) involving primarily use of a cultivator and rodweeder]. The effect of snow management on soil organic matter was also evaluated in one experiment, but this factor was not significant. Organic matter changes were mainly observed in the 0- to 7.5-cm soil depth. Carbon and N were greater in both concentrations and amounts in Cont W than in F–W; the latter cropping system was employed on this land during the previous 70–80 yr. In the 0- to 7.5-cm depth, the amount of organic matter was only moderately greater in NT than CT in the Cont W systems while in the F-W systems tillage was not significant (P > 0.10). During the 12-yr period, Cont W (average of NT and CT) gained about 2 t ha−1 more C in the top 15 cm of soil than F-W (average of NT and CT), with most of the increase occurring in the first 5 yr. Further, Cont W (NT) gained about 1.5 t ha−1 more C than Cont W (CT), and F-W (NT) gained about 0.5 t ha−1 more than F-W (CT). When a system that was maintained as Cont W (NT) for 9 yr was changed to Cont W (CT) for 3 yr and then summerfallowed (CT) for 1 yr, soil organic matter declined (P < 0.05). Our observations, supported by calculations based on crop residue production, indicated that an increase in organic C, averaging about 0.4–0.5 t ha−1 yr−1, has occurred in the top 15 cm of soil in Cont W (NT) between 1982 and 1993. However, because of uncertainty in our estimated C levels at the start of the experiment, the nature of the rate of C increase (linear or curvilinear) is not known. Abstract:
Purple cabbage plants require an adequate supply of water in the process of growing. So that if there is a lack of water it can result in stressful conditions then the growth of purple cabbage is disrupted and can even cause death. The purpose of this study was to determine the tolerance limits of purple cabbage to PEG 6000, and to determine the effect of PEG 6000 on the growth of purple cabbage as a simulation of drought stress. This research was conducted using a completely randomized design with the main factor being PEG 6000 with 5 concentration levels: 0 % w/v, 10% w/v, 20% w/v, 30% w/v and 40% w/v with 5 replications. As parameters are plant height, length, width, and number of leaves, also chlorophyll content. Then analyzed with the Levene test, one way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test at 5% level. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that giving PEG 6000 shows that the tolerance limit for purple cabbage plants to PEG 6000 treatment is at a concentration of 10%, then giving PEG 6000 gives a negative response to the growth of purple cabbage which is indicated by a decrease in plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaf, also chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll content.

Abstract:
Soil organic matter contributes to the productivity and physical well-being of soils. An 11-yr study was conducted on a clay soil in the Brown soil zone in southwestern Saskatchewan to determine the influence of tillage and cropping frequency on soil organic C and total N content. Carbon and N behaved in a similar manner. Cropping frequency did not affect soil organic C or total N content, but soil C and N were greater under no-tillage (NT) than under mechanically tilled continuous wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (Cont W) and fallow-wheat (F-W) rotations. Effects were apparent in the 0– to 7.5– and 7.5– to 15-cm depths. Over the 11-yr period, F-W (minimum tillage) gained no additional C; Cont W (conventional tillage) gained 2 t C ha−1, and both Cont W (NT) and F-W (NT) gained 5 t C ha−1. Changes in organic C and N were greatest in the final 4 yr of the experiment when crop residue production was greatest. Using data from two similar experiments conducted during the same period on soils differing in texture, we demonstrated that C gains were directly related to clay content of the soils. Thus, when attempting to estimate C storage in soils, we must consider both residue input and soil clay content. Key words: Organic C, total N, organic matter, soil texture, bulk density

Abstract:
Cell nucleus and membrane recovery after exposure to microwaves Cells of human buccal epithelium of six male donors were exposed to microwave radiation (frequency f = 36.64 GHz, power density W = 0.1, 1 and 4 W/m2). Exposure time was 10 seconds. The state of chromatin in cell nucleus was estimated by a number of heterochromatin granules after staining with 2% orcein in 45% acetic acid. Permeability of cell membranes was estimated by percentage of unstained cells after 5 min of staining the cells with vital dyes trypan blue (0.5%) and indigocarmine (5 mM). Cell exposure to microwaves induced chromatin condensation (increase of the number of heterochromatin granules) and increase of membrane permeability to trypan blue and indigocarmine. Isolated human buccal cells demonstrated the ability to recover after microwave exposure. The number of heterochromatin granules decreased to its initial level after 0.5 hour (W = 0.1 W/m2) and 2 hours (W = 1 and 4 W/m2) after cell exposure. Cell plasma membrane permeability recovered later — after 1 hour and 3 hours post exposure, respectively.

Abstract:
Soil organic C (SOC) is readily influenced by crop management practices, such as summerfallowing. On the Canadian prairies, the area summerfallowed has decreased significantly in recent years. Our objectives were to determine the influence of fallow frequency on the rate of change in SOC in an Orthic Brown Chernozem, and to test the effectiveness of an empirical equation developed in an earlier study for estimating SOC changes in these rotations over 33-yr period. The rotations, which were initiated in 1967, all received adequate N and P fertilizers. They were (i) fallow-spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (F-W), F-W-W, F-W-W-W-W-W and W-lentil (Lens culinaris L.) (W-Lent). Soil organic C was measured in the 0- to 15-cm and 15- to 30-cm depths in 1976, 1981, 1984, 1990, 1993, 1996 and 1999. No measurements of SOC were made in 1967; we estimated SOC starting values to be 30.5 Mg ha–1 in the 0- to 15-cm depth. In the period 1967 to 1990, when growing season precipitation was near normal for this semiarid region, SOC in the four rotations approached a steady state. However, a decade of much more favourable growing season precipitation in the 1990s increased C inputs, which resulted in a marked increase in SOC in the treatments. The empirical equation suggests, and the F-W and W-Lent rotations appear to confirm, that these rotations are approaching a new steady state at a higher level of SOC, reflecting the decade of favourable precipitation. Measured SOC levels were quite variable, emphasizing the difficulty of relying on measurements made over short time frames (e.g., 5-6 yr) when quantifying SOC changes. The equation effectively simulated the trends in SOC changes in all rotations, but consistently underestimated SOC levels in the W-Lent rotation by about 2 Mg ha–1. Estimates of difference in SOC between treatments were generally similar whether expressed on a mass/fixed depth or a mass/equivalent depth basis. Based on the estimates derived by the empirical equation, we estimated rates of SOC sequestration during the 1967-1990 period to be 0.03 Mg ha–1 yr–1 for F-W, 0.10 Mg ha–1 yr–1 for F-W-W, and 0.15 Mg ha–1 yr–1 for W-Lent. If we include the decade of more favourable precipitation (1967-1999), the rates were between 0.05 Mg ha–1 yr–1 for F-W and 0.20 Mg ha–1 yr–1 for W-Lent. These values are much higher than those estimated by others using the CENTURY model. We concluded that (i) simple models, such as that used in this study, are very useful for estimating management effects on SOC changes, and (ii) we must be cautious in extrapolating C sequestration estimates based on data from short-term experiments because future weather conditions are not easily predicted and weather can have an important impact on C sequestration.
