Abstract:
The study examined the analysis of firm specific determinants of profitability (PROF) of listed Oil & Gas firms in Nigeria between the periods of 2011-2020. The study made used of secondary data which was sourced from the annual reports and accounts of the various 10 Oil and Gas Firms for the measures of firm specific determinants [Firm Size (FS), Firm Age (FA), Liquidity (LIQ), Leverage (LEV), Sales Growth (SG) and Operating Expenses (OE)] in relation to profitability proxy with Return on Assets (ROA). Descriptive statistics and the correlation analysis were used to determine the nature of relationship between the independent and dependent variables. In view of the hypothesis formulated for this research, the method of data analysis chosen was a multiple regression analysis using E-VIEW 9.0 computer software. The findings revealed that LIQ, LEV and OE have significant relationship on ROA while FS, FA and SG does not have significant relationship on ROA relationship with ROA. Hence, the study concluded that there is a significant relationship between firm specific determinants and the PROF of listed Oil & Gas firms in Nigeria. This study recommended among others that Listed Oil and Gas Firms should increase their FS so as to increase the return on assets of their firms. Keywords: Profitability, Liquidity, Leverage, Firm Size and Return on Asset.

Crovini, Chiara, and Giovanni Ossola. "Is risk reporting a possible link between financial and management accounting in private firms?" FINANCIAL REPORTING, no. 1 (June 2021): 29–60. http://dx.doi.org/10.3280/fr2021-001002.

Abstract:
This study represents a theoretical analysis with the purpose to continue the discussion on the relationship between management accounting (MA) and financial accounting (FA), by concentrating on the role of risk reporting as a possible manifestation of their convergence. Moreover, the analysis focuses on the private-firm sector as private firms represent the backbone of the economic system of several countries and little is known about financial and non-financial reporting. Drawing on the neo- Durkheimian institutional theory, this paper develops a conceptual framing that considers risk as an embedded element of the business domain and risk reporting as a direct outcome of the convergence between MA and FA in private firms. Furthermore, the neo-Durkheimian institutional theory emphasizes that the owners and managers' risk attitude is a crucial element affecting risk disclosure, especially in private firms.

Abstract:
Maternal folic acid (FA) supplementation is well recognised to protect against neural tube defects. Folate is a critical cofactor in one-carbon metabolism involved in the epigenetic regulation of transcription that underpins development. Thus, it is possible that maternal FA supplementation may have additional, unforeseen persistent effects in the offspring. This is supported by the modification by maternal supplementation with one-carbon donors and FA of the epigenetic regulation of offspring phenotype in mutant mice. The present article reviews studies in human subjects and experimental animals of the effect of maternal FA intake and phenotypic outcomes in the offspring. Maternal FA intake was associated with a short-term increased incidence of allergy-related respiratory impairment in children and multigenerational respiratory impairment in rats. Higher maternal folate status during pregnancy was associated positively with insulin resistance in 6-year-olds. In rats, maternal FA supplementation modified hepatic metabolism and vascular function through altered transcription, in some cases underpinned by epigenetic changes. FA supplementation in pregnant rats increased mammary tumorigenesis, but decreased colorectal cancer in the offspring. Maternal FA supplementation decreased a range of congenital cardiac defects in children. These findings support the view that maternal FA supplementation induces persistent changes in a number of phenotypic outcomes in the offspring. However, the number of studies is limited and insufficient to indicate a need to change current recommendations for FA intake in pregnancy. Nevertheless, such effects should be investigated thoroughly in order to support firm conclusions about the risk of unanticipated long-term negative effects of maternal FA supplementation in humans.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to put forward a demand chain management (DCM) framework underpinned by the alignment theory and applies it to investigate the fashion apparel (FA) industry in China under the impacts of the latest economic transition. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory multiple case study methodology involving five Chinese FA firms, each with a different business model and ownership type, was employed. Semi-structured interviews, onsite observations and review of company documents were conducted to collect information for analysis. Findings Using a conceptual DCM framework as a guide for analysis, the study finds that companies with a higher level of alignment with the external market situation and among the three internal DCM dimensions, namely, market management, supply chain management (SCM), and organization management, appear to perform better under the rapidly changing economic conditions in China. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to knowledge by reviewing thoroughly the literature on SCM evolution and develops a DCM framework based on alignment theory that represents the state of the art in this area. By extending the administration-integration-production-development (A-I-P-D) logic set adopted in the alignment theory, this study has also equipped the proposed framework with an empirical tool to measure alignment. Practical implications By applying the framework to examine the Chinese apparel industry under the impacts of the latest economic transition, this study provides practitioners in the industry with a framework to help formulate strategies and a tool to measure alignment. The findings of the case study also offer insights to the industry to thrive in the rapidly changing businesses environment with dynamic uncertainties. Originality/value This study extends the application of the A-I-P-D logic set under the alignment theory to the SCM field. This endeavor successfully transforms the proposed DCM framework from a theoretical concept to a practical tool to help evaluate empirically the alignment and strategic fit of a firm and potential relationship with firm performance. As the Chinese FA market has increasingly evolved under the impact of the globalization, the findings of this study not only assist the local FA companies in coping with the dynamic uncertainties but also shed light on the future developments of the global FA industry. Besides, the alignment measurement tool embedded in the proposed DCM framework can help enhance the chances of business success during implementation.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a better assessment of the positive impact of family influence (FI) on the performance of SMEs and investigate a possible shift with firm size (FS) and age. Design/methodology/approach This study is based upon a large sample of 4,240 firms representative of small businesses operating in the USA. It focuses on active ownership, i.e. direct involvement of owners alongside employees as an important factor of FI and conducts hierarchical regression models with profitability as the dependent variable, FI as the independent variable, and FS/age as moderating variables. It also includes other firm characteristics as control variables. Findings The results show that even though active family ownership is positively associated with the profitability of SMEs, the relationship between FI and profitability is negatively moderated by FS and firm age (FA). Research limitations/implications The limitations of this study are mainly related to the definition of family SMEs and to the cross-sectional data used to understand the variations in economic performance. However, the results show the great importance of this kind of study; more attention must be paid to heterogeneity due to the size and age of family businesses as well as the level of owners’ involvement alongside employees. Practical implications Practitioners are encouraged to maintain a higher degree of family ownership combined with a higher degree of active ownership in the initial stages, when family businesses are young and small. However, the level of active ownership should be reduced when family businesses increase in age and size. According to this study, practitioners should open up businesses to external human resources other than the owners’ family as the firm increases in size/age to avoid the risks associated with family members lacking talent and/or expropriating benefits. Originality/value This study is one of the first to give evidence on not only a direct (and positive) relationship between FI and economic performance, but also an indirect (and negative) moderating effect of FS and FA on this relationship.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the nature and intensity of changes in corporate sustainable development as a result of certain relationships between stakeholder-centered corporate governance (CG) and corporate social responsibility CSR practices in the leading firms with respect to their market capitalization (MC) in the Shanghai stock exchange (SSE) of China. This study selected the top 100 companies from the manufacturing sector at the Shanghai Stock Exchange by (MC) for a period of 10 years (2012–2021). For this quantitative study, financial and CSR performance data were collected from the China Securities Market and Accounting Database (CSMAR), a reliable database for examining research on Chinese listed companies. For the data analysis, we applied different statistical tools that include descriptive statistics; a correlation matrix, fixed effect regression analysis, and moderation analysis of the effect of government subsidies on the relationship between explanatory variables and the dependent variable (firm performance) were applied. The result of the adjusted R-square values suggests that there has been a considerable change in the value of explained variable Firm Performance (FP), represented by ROA, TbQ, and Grow caused by the explanatory variables of the study, including Government-centered responsibility (GCR), community-centered responsibility (COMCR), firm age (FA), firm size (FS), and leverage (LV). Supplier-centered responsibility (SCR), customer-centered responsibility (CCR), creditor-centered responsibility (CRCR), and total risk (TR) were, respectively, at a 1% and 5% level of significance. The values extracted from the moderation effect show that Sub is a key factor in motivating the well-established large firms to focus on stakeholders-centered CSR practices, which ultimately improves the FP in the short and long run.

Abstract:
The study uses panel data and a two-step GMM estimation to figure out how formalization of firms affects Vietnam's total factor productivity (TFP) and its decompositions. TFP is broken down into output-oriented technical efficiency (OTE), (ii) output-oriented scale efficiency (OSE), and (iii) residual mixed efficiency based on the Faure-Primont (FP) index (RME). So, the mechanism of the formalization process can be thought of in different ways to improve corporate performance. The results show that formalization played a important role in the rise of TFP, OSE, and RME of SMEs in Vietnam. The findings imply that it is important to improve the business environment and formalization, which in turn promote productivity.

Abstract:
BackgroundBrief interventions (BIs) delivered in primary care have been shown to be effective in reducing risky drinking, but implementation is limited. Facilitated access to a digital application offers a novel alternative to face-to-face intervention, but its relative effectiveness is unknown.MethodsPrimary care-based, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial comparing general practitioner (GP) facilitated access to an interactive alcohol reduction website (FA) with face-to-face BI for risky drinking. Patients screening positive on the short Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) were invited to participate in the trial. Assessment at baseline, 3 months and 12 months was carried out using AUDIT and EQ-5D-5L questionnaires.Findings58 participating GPs approached 9080 patients of whom 4529 (49.9%) logged on, 3841 (84.8%) undertook screening, 822 (21.4%) screened positive and 763 (19·9%) were recruited. 347 (45.5%) were allocated to FA and 416 (54.5%) to BI. At 3 months, subjects in FA group with an AUDIT score of ≥8 reduced from 95 (27.5%) to 85 (26.8%) while those in BI group increased from 123 (20.6%) to 141 (37%). Differences between groups were principally due to responses to AUDIT question 10. Analysis of primary outcome indicated non-inferiority of FA compared with BI, and prespecified subgroup analysis indicated benefits for older patients and those with higher levels of computer literacy and lower baseline severity. Additional analyses undertaken to take account of bias in response to AUDIT question 10 failed to support non-inferiority within the prespecified 10% boundary.InterpretationPrespecified protocol-driven analyses of the trial indicate that FA is non-inferior to BI; however, identified bias in the outcome measure and further supportive analyses question the robustness of this finding. It is therefore not possible to draw firm conclusions from this trial, and further research is needed to determine whether the findings can be replicated using more robust outcome measures.Trial registration numberNCT01638338; Results.

Abstract:
Jackfruit seeds are usually discarded as waste. Therefore, this work aimed at obtaining the Jackfruit seeds flour of two varieties (soft and firm) from Brazilian Midwest and to evaluate its physicochemical characteristics, mineral and fatty acids composition (FA). Seeds were dried at 45°C for 72h and ground (40-mesh). Both flours revealed high protein content, varying from 13.43% to 16.28%. It also revealed excellent insoluble fibers (4.16% for soft Jackfruit seeds flour [SJF] and 4.68% for firm Jackfruit seeds flours [FJF]) content. Plus, it was good sources of minerals, especially magnesium (approximately 200 mg 100g-1). Oleic acid was predominant in FJF (47.03%) and linoleic acid (30.81%) in SJF. The flour from both seeds presented minor contents of acid α-linolenic acid (approximately 5%). Consequently, both seeds flours are strongly indicated for formulating new food products, improving its nutritional value and promoting beneficial effects on human health.

Abstract:
BackgroundDepressive disorders are highly prevalent in adolescence and confer a heightened risk of recurrence in adulthood. Insight into the developmental neurocircuitry of depression could advance our understanding of depression and aid the development of effective treatment strategies. Whereas white-matter (WM) abnormalities are strongly implicated in adult depression, we still lack a firm understanding of WM architecture in adolescent depression. Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we set out to investigate WM microstructure in a sample of clinically depressed adolescents relative to matched controls.MethodWe employed tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to examine WM microstructure in 25 treatment-naive adolescents with clinical depression relative to 21 matched controls. Using TBSS, we examined fractional anisotropy (FA), axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD) and mean diffusivity (MD). Threshold-free cluster enhancement (TFCE) with family-wise error (FWE) correction was used to control for multiple comparisons.ResultsOur analysis revealed abnormal WM microstructure in clinically depressed adolescents. More specifically, whole-brain analysis revealed that patients had lower FA values in the body of the corpus callosum (CC), coupled with elevated RD and MD, and preserved AD. Conversely, region-of-interest analysis revealed that patients had higher FA values in the uncinate fasciculus (UF), coupled with elevated AD, reduced RD and preserved MD.ConclusionsIn line with neurocircuitry models of depression, our findings suggest that WM abnormalities within pathways facilitating cognitive and emotional functioning are involved in the pathophysiology of depression. Importantly, our findings show that these WM abnormalities are already present early in the course of the disorder.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to explore which kind of relationships connect urban space and contemporary cinema, by analyzing the space of the film image. How does urban spectator react in front of images invaded by many technological devices, which change the condition of that film space? The concept of respatialization seems to be a strategy, for cinema, to survive in the actual media landscape.

examining the faç
ade formation of the high-rise office buildings in Levent-Maslak area in respect to the analysis and examining the working principles and marketing attitudes of faç

application, by which physical autonomy is totally gained, transforms the faç
ade to a production element by using the technological developments and specifications of curtain-wall system in the Turkish context, in particular in Levent-Maslak area. Besides the technical availability, the representational qualities of the new materials transform this production based character of the free-faç
ade to a more representational character as an object-faç
ade. Finally, the study investigates how the technical knowledge inherent in the new faç
ade systems gives the authority,in formation process of faç
ades, to the manufacturing firms instead of the architect. It is therefore stressed that the changing role of the architect in the formation process of faç
ades is often based on the working principles and marketing attitudes of faç
ade manufacturing firms at present.

Abstract:
I agreed to meet Punk Paul on Stokes Croft at around 8 a.m. Paul was exactly where he said he would be—behind the bin next to The Big Issue office. In his early forties, Punk Paul was everything a punk should be—a devout follower of punk bands across the UK, he sported a blue Mohican (when bathroom facilities and soap rations permitted), army issue boots and a battered leather jacket covered in ‘anti-fa’ (anti-fascist) symbols. Paul fashioned the rest of his clothes from whatever he was given by church volunteers and picked up along the way. His distain of authority was firm but friendly. ‘Evening officer,’ he could often be heard saying, with a wink, to local police who regularly busted him for drinking in ‘no drinking zones’. ‘Could you spare a few shekels for an old sea dog? I’m trying to get together a pirate ship to sail off the end of the earth!’ ‘I have to pay Abdul £10.03,’ Paul said, as I approached. Abdul, Stokes Croft’s kindly but long-suffering newsagent, let some homeless people, including Paul, have beer on tick. We walked the short distance from the post office to Abdul’s shop and I waited outside with my dogs while Paul paid his debt. He was holding a can of Tennant’s lager when he reappeared. ‘It’s sort of a constant debt that I have with Abdul!’ He grinned before leading the way down City Road, Brighton Road, and onto Wilder Street. ‘You have to see this place! If you want to see what homelessness is really like in this country . . . this city could be any city, if you ask me. You have to see this place!’ We continued down Wilder Street until we reached a semi-derelict building. Through peeling paint it was possible to read ‘Bristol Transmissions’ above the long-ago boarded-up shop window. ‘It’s known as “The Black House”,’ Paul said, pushing the door. A padlock had been smashed off. Inside, there were two downstairs rooms, both hugely decayed with missing floorboards.

Abstract:
After a dispute with Diaghilev over money and after a long-standing feud with fellow music critic Emile Vuillermoz, Auric abruptly made several shifts in his career in the late 1920s. He briefly moved out of Paris into the suburbs. He began collaborating frequently with avant-garde theatre companies and, beginning in 1930, would compose his first three film scores. He also dreamed of composing major works of absolute music, resulting in his 1930–31 Sonate en fa. In 1930, he married the painter Nora Vilter and the two settled in Hyères, in a home given to them by Charles and Marie de la Noailles. As the Great Depression settled into France, the Aurics struggled financially and his career reached its lowest point.

Abstract:
This essay attempts a critical rereading of the well-known film by the Chinese director Fei Mu. When first released in 1948, Spring in a Small Town was judged derogatorily by critics in the then-rising communist China as a reactionary work, one that they considered to perpetuate China's feudal beliefs and customs. Through a reading of the Yuwen's voiceover narration, the scenes in which she and Zhichen play out their strong passion for each other in words and gestures, and the melodramatic ending of the reconciliation between Yuwen and Liyan, this chapter raises questions about the relations among female sexuality, culture, and nature in this specific context. Above all, the chapter interrogates the basis that seems to unite the film's director and his critics-that is, a collective consensus on the necessity of repression, as expressed in the Confucian moral-aethetic dictum, fa huqing, zhi hu li ([poetry is] springing from the emotions, stopping at the rules of propriety), a dictum that was not only conveyed by Fei Mu as an instruction to the actors but also reiterated as an ethical principle in much of the critical literature on the film.

Abstract:
This paper provides an account of more than a year’s fieldwork with a small group of Falun Gong members in New Zealand. The narrative begins in 2005 with my hopes of helping the group, and ends in a haze of mysterious communications, threats and accusations, which continue today – a decade after the research project was finished. The chapter shows how Falun Gong members in Western countries have forged an identity for their spiritual path as a group subjected to human rights violations for simply doing breathing exercises. The Rachlin media group (Falun Gong’s former Public Relations organisation) created the narrative, re-casting apocalyptic leader Li Hongzhi as a hero akin to Gandhi, who has mobilised millions of followers to non-violently resist an oppressive regime. In accord with this story, practitioners have staged headline-generating events, despatched thousands of press releases, and protested any portrayal that is not in accord with their new image. But Li’s writings to members tell a different narrative to the one told in the Western media. Drawing on my ethnographic research, the author discusses the differences between the group’s public and private communications. Using James Scott’s frame – the higher the stakes involved, the greater the discrepancy between an oppressed group’s public and hidden transcripts (Domination and the Arts of Resistance: Hidden Transcripts. Yale University Press 1990) – Heather Kavan observes that while practitioners revised their publicly proclaimed ideology to appeal to Western moral ideals of amelioration of suffering and personal freedom, these ideals were not part of their in-group communications. Rather, sacrifice, martyrdom, and exclusivity were intrinsic to members’ beliefs and life choices. To illustrate the focus on suffering and martyrdom, the author analyses practitioners’ responses when a frail, older member was denied refugee status and was returning to China to her likely imprisonment. Heather Kavan discusses why practitioners refused to pass on a message that would assist the woman and possibly save her life, preferring to embrace Li Hongzhi’s views that suffering is to be prized. The chapter closes with an outline of the responses to Heather Kavan's study. She discusses the internet passages about her that resulted in several Falun Gong authors being banned from Wikipedia, and the lingering shadowy harassment of which she could never be sure whether the protagonists were from the Chinese government or Falun Gong. Heather Kavan interprets harassment from Falun Gong as an expression of Li Hongzhi’s ‘stepping forward’ ideology in which practitioners must defend his version of the fa to compete for entry into heaven, which only allows for limited numbers.

Abstract:
Introduction: Phyllodes tumor (PT) of the breast is an infrequent neoplasm, which corresponds to less than 0.5% of the breast tumors. The age group at the greatest risk in women is between 35 and 55 years of age. They are classified as benign (60%–75%), borderline (15%–20%), and malignant (10%–20%). In their less aggressive form, they behave like benign fibroadenomas (FA), however, with a tendency to recur locally after excision without wide margins. In contrast, they may present a metastatic component in its most aggressive form. In general, they are referred to as voluminous tumors, larger than 5 cm, painless, of firm consistency, with a raised or lobulated surface, well defined, movable, and without compromising the skin or deep tissues. They are associated with inflammatory axillary nodes in 17% and metastatic in about 1%. Systemic spread is rare and primarily affects the lungs, bones, liver, and brain. However, the preoperative diagnosis is very difficult, since its clinical presentation, in imaging examinations and in biopsies, is like to FA, requiring surgical excision of the lesion for diagnostic confirmation. Surgical treatment alone is the first therapeutic choice. In smaller tumors, general segmental surgical resection with margins of at least 1 cm is necessary for local control. In very voluminous tumors, total mastectomy or adenomastectomy is performed, without the need for axillary dissection, due to the low probability of lymphatic metastasis. Adjuvant radiotherapy is controversial, with a reduction in the rate of relapses, but without a reduction in mortality. A 67-year-old patient came to the gynecology emergency deparment reporting an ulcerated lesion in the right breast for 3 months, associated with intense right breast tenderness and local fetid secretion. She reported an involuntary weight loss of 6 kg and a progressive increase in the lesion, which at the time of the consultation affected practically the entire breast. She reported active smoking for 40 years. On physical examination, a necrotic-looking tumor was observed, occupying all quadrants of the right breast, with local fetid secretion. She underwent core biopsy, which resulted in a poorly differentiated, high-grade malignant neoplasm in the breast and skin on the right, with breast neoplasia to immunohistochemical marking of prognostic factors: estrogen receptor (ER) negative, progesterone receptor (PR) negative, KI67 positive 50%, and HER2 negative. She underwent right mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. The anatomopathological conclusion reported histological aspects of a malignant PT of the breast (cystosarcoma phyllodes). The tumor measured 21×15×9.5 cm, with a high-grade epithelioid appearance and necrosis in 60% of the neoplasm, in addition to the ulcerated skin affected by the malignant lesion, with areola and nipple free of invasion. The margins were free and there was no evidence of vascular invasion. In all, 30 mitotic figures were present in 10 CGA in sarcomatous areas. Two sentinel lymph nodes were isolated and were free of neoplasia. Immunohistochemistry was repeated: KI67 is 45%, HER2, ER, and PR are all negative. The patient was referred for outpatient follow-up at Clinical Oncology, which started adjuvant radiotherapy.

Abstract:
Both diffraction gratings and optical interference coatings are used in a wide range of applications. While the basic theory of thin-film optics is well covered in many optics text books and many books on the design, fabrication and application of optical coatings have been published, the treatment of diffraction gratings in optics text books goes little beyond presenting the grating and to date only three books on diffraction gratings have been published. The book edited by Petit1 describes the electromagnetic theory of gratings. The book by Hutley2 concentrates on the physics of gratings. Complementing the above two, the recently published book by Loewen and Popov3 aims at the applications of gratings. In addition, a volume in SPIE’s milestone series, edited by Maystre4, contains many important papers in all aspects of gratings up to 1992.

Abstract:
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of diamond film has recently been discovered in variety of flame and plasma environments. A gas jet of effluent from a dc-arc plasma has one of the fastest growth rates for high quality diamond film. To improve the yield from such arc-jet plasmas, models of the deposition chemistry and sensors to control the reactive gas jets are needed. Measurements of the gas temperature in the jet and boundary layer above the substrate surface are crucial to develop models of the process chemistry. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements of the rotational distribution of diatomic radicals has proven an effective method for non-intrusive determinations of gas temperature in low-pressure flames.1 In this presentation we discuss LIF observations of CH radicals in a dc-arc-jet reactor during diamond CVD and explore different excitation and detection strategies to determine the optimum method for temperature measurements.

Abstract:
Second-harmonic generation and others quadratic effects have attracted a great interest in the past few years. The renewal of these experimental and theoretical studies is essentially focused on cascaded χ(2) effects. Our aim here is to concentrate on corrugated Zinc Sulfide thin film and take the advantage of the strong confinement of the resonantly excited guided waves. Surprisingly, dielectric thin films have not been intensively studied for their nonlinear optical properties as was be done for polymer thin films.

Abstract:
Abstract In high-velocity ejector systems containing liquid droplets, ejector walls are sometimes damaged by flow-accelerated corrosion/erosion. Velocity, droplet size, impact angle etc. are the most important parameters affecting flow-accelerated (FA) corrosion/erosion. In our plant operation, we had experienced FA corrosion/erosion and consequent failure even with very low impact angle. To understand the leak/ failure, we have adopted the Euler-Euler multiphase model-based CFD approach. In the Euler-Euler multiphase model, the liquid droplets are modelled as dispersed phase while the gas-steam is modelled as a continuous phase. To capture the droplet dynamics very accurately, appropriate correlations for drag, lift and wall lubrication force have been chosen. In CFD simulations we have observed liquid film formation at the ejector wall. The liquid film moves along the ejector wall creates a very high wall shear-stress. In the location of high wall shear-stress, one can expect high FA corrosion/erosion and consequent leak. Qualitative comparison of the X-ray image of the actual equipment with the CFD results for wall-shear stress shows very good agreement in terms of predicting leak location. Moreover, we have varied the droplet size and the liquid fraction in the upstream of the ejector. Qualitatively we have observed that with increase in droplet size the material removal rate increases, however, the affected area of the leak decreases. The more liquid in the system increases the wall-shear stress very rapidly. The present CFD model is useful for predicting the leak-prone location and taking predictive actions (e.g. cladding the wall with a high-grade material).

Identification of Impact Aroma Compounds in Tomato: Implications to New Hybrids with Improved Acceptance through Sensory, Chemical, Breeding and Agrotechnical Techniques. United States Department of Agriculture, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2002.7585204.bard.

Abstract:
The tomato, a profitable vegetable crop in both the USA and Israel, has benefited significantly from intensive breeding efforts in both countries, and elsewhere (esp. Holland). : Modem hybrids are highly prolific and resistant to a variety of major pests. They produce attractive, firm fruit for both processing and fresh-marketing. In all cases, however, reduction in flavor and aroma have occurred concomitantly with the increase in yield. Sugars-acids ratio dominate fruit taste, whereas aroma volatiles (potent at minute ppb and ppt levels) contribute to the total characteristic tomato flavor. An increase in sugars (1-2%) contributes significantly to tomato fruit taste. However, because of energy reasons, an increase in fruit sugars is immediately compensated for by a decrease in yield. Our main objectives were to: (a) pinpoint and identify the major impact aroma components of fresh tomato; (b) study the genetic and environmental effects on fruit aroma; (c) determine precursors of appealing (flavors) and repelling (off-flavors) aroma compounds in tomato. Addition of saturated salts blocked all enzymatic activities prior to isolation of volatiles by dynamic and static headspace, using solvent assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) and solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) from highly favored (FA-612 and FA-624) and less preferred (R 144 and R 175) tomato genotypes. Impact aroma components were determined by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC- MS) and aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). The potent odorant (Z)-1,5-octadien-3-one, was identified for the first time in fresh tomato. From the ca. 400 volatile compounds in the headspace of fresh tomato, the following compounds are proposed to be impact aroma compounds: (Z)-3-hexenal, hexanal, 1-penten-3-one, 2-phenylethanol, (E)-2-hexenal, phenyl acetaldehyde, b-ionone, b-damascenone, 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3-(2H)-furanone (FuraneolR), (Z)-l,5-octadien-3-one, methional, 1-octen-3-one, guaiacol, (E,E)- and (E,Z)- 2,4-decadienal and trans- and cis-4,5-EPOXY -(E)-2-decenal. This confirms the initial hypothesis that only a small number of volatiles actually contribute to the sensation of fruit aroma. Tomato matrix significantly affected the volatility of certain impact aroma components and thus led to the conclusion that direct analysis of molecules in the headspace . may best represent access of tomato volatiles to the olfactory receptors. Significant differences in certain odorants were found between preferred and less-preferred cultivars. Higher consumer preference was correlated with higher concentrations of the following odorants: l-penten-3-one, (Z)-3-hexenal, (E,E)- and (E,Z)-2,4-decadienal and especially Furaneol, whereas lower consumer preference was associated with higher concentrations of methional, 3-methylbutyric acid, phenylacetaldehyde, 2-phenylethanol, and 2-isobutylthiazole. Among environmental factors (salinity, N source, growth temperature), temperature had significant effects on the content of selected aroma compounds (e.g., 3-methylbutanal, 1- penten-3-one, hexanal, (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, 2-isobutylthiazole, 6-methyl-5-hepten- 2-one, 1-octen-3-one, methional, 2-phenylethanal, phenyl acetaldehyde, and eugenol) in fresh tomatoes. Salt stress (20 mM NaCl) increased the content of odorants such as (Z)-3-hexenal, 2-phenylethanol and 3-methylbutanal in the R-144 cultivar whereas salinity had minor effects on 1-pentene-3-one, 2-isobutylthiazole and b-ionone. This fundamental knowledge obtained by comprehensive investigation, using modem chemical, sensory and agrotechnical methodology will assist future attempts to genetically modify the concentrations of key odorants in fresh tomatoes, and thus keep the tomato production of Israel and the USA competitive on the world market.
