Shorey, Thomas Paul Jr. "Parametric Performance-driven Passive Solar Designed Facade Systems." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2015. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1408.

Full text
Abstract:
Buildings in the United States account for nearly 68% of all U.S. energy consumption due to their reliance on electrical lighting and mechanical systems. Beginning in the 20th century, emphasis on developing the glass curtain wall created increased energy demands on lighting and mechanical systems. Consequently, the building’s curtain wall is a direct cause of significant energy loads. This research project investigated how current parametric design tools and energy analysis software are used during a performance-driven passive solar design process to develop facade systems that lower the energy use intensity (EUI) of a building and increase natural daylight to an acceptable illuminance level (lux). Passive solar shading strategies were employed to realize the proposed design process through a proof of concept project that retrofits the facade of an outdated office building in a hot-mediterranean climate. Incremental steps were taken using parametric software (Revit Architecture 2015) to increase the passive solar and daylighting performance capabilities of the facade system and Autodesk Green Building Studio was employed to measure, compare and contrast the results of each design.

Yellamraju, Vijaya. "Evaluation and design of double-skin facades for office buildings in hot climates." Thesis, Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/205.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objectives of this research are (a) to investigate the thermal effect of double skin facades in office buildings in hot climates and (b) to propose guidelines for their efficient design based on this evaluation. The study involves the energy performance analysis of two buildings in India. A base case with the existing building skin was simulated for both the cities. The main source for the high cooling loads was found to be heat gain through windows and walls. This led to the evolution of a series of facade strategies with the goals of reducing heat gain, providing ventilation and day-lighting. The buildings were then simulated for their energy performance with the proposed double-skin strategies. Each of these strategies was varied according to the layers constituting the facade, the transparency of the facade and the orientation of the facade to which it is applied. Final comparisons of energy consumption were made between the proposed options and the base case to find the most efficient strategy and also the factors that affected this efficiency. The simulations were done using the building simulation software, Ener-Win. The double skin was simulated as per an approximate and simplistic calculation of the u-value, solar heat gain coefficient and transmissivity properties of the layers constituting the facade. The model relied on logically arrived at assumptions about the facade properties that were approximately within 10% range of measured values. Based on inferences drawn from these simulations, a set of design guidelines comprised of goals and parameters was generated for design of double-skin facades in hot climates typical to most of the Indian subcontinent. It was realized that the double-skin defined typically as a 'pair of glass skins separated by an air corridor' may not be an entirely energy efficient design strategy for hot climates. However, when used appropriately in combination with other materials, in the right orientation and with the right transparency, a double-layered facade turns out to be an energy efficient solution.

Abstract:
Bangkok's dramatic growth in the last three decades has brought with it a wide range of urban problems - economic, architectural, environmental, and social. One problem has been a demand for a new dwelling and work spaces. The Bangkok townhouse has served to meet both needs, but the forms it has taken thus far leaves needs improvement. This creative project proposes improvements to the Bangkok townhouses to make it more responsive to its environment as well as interior functions. The improvements focus on facades, reorganization of interior spaces, and physical townhouse elements. The study uses a typological and environmental study to understand and investigate examples of existing Bangkok townhouses. This includes case study analyses to suggest daylighting design strategies for design applications. This study proposes a facade design guideline and a set of physical arrangement suggestions for enhancing the daylight, ventilation, and accommodation capacity of the Bangkok townhouses. In addition, potential applications of the facade guidelines are illustrated. The facade and physical arrangement guidelines can be a fundamental concept for further development and improvement of the Bangkok and other townhouses in locations throughout Thailand.

This research has significantly advanced the knowledge and understanding of the structural behaviour and design of vertical load bearing members of aluminium facades subject to wind actions, based on full-scale wind pressure tests and extensive advanced numerical simulations. It has shown that the design approaches used in the industry may result in either conservative or unsafe designs of vertical load bearing members, and thus developed improved design guidelines. Further, it has demonstrated that advanced numerical simulations can be used for economical designs of these facade members.

Kilaire, Aneel. "Design of an integrated passive and active double facade system for UK offices." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/30860/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Egan Report, changes to Part L Building regulations, and the importance of office workers is challenging designers to improve the construction process, reduce operational carbon emissions, and enhance occupant comfort for office buildings in the United Kingdom. This thesis proposes a double skin facade system with integrated environmental systems to overcome these challenges. The Facade deals with a number of conflicting requirements and a single-storey, naturally ventilated cavity, unitised Double Facade has been proposed to resolve them. The two key determinants for the Active Environmental System have been prefabrication and operational carbon emissions. To address these issues a decentralised system, comprising of a Reversible Air Source Heat Pump, Heat Exchanger, Active Beam and Active Trench is proposed, and integrated into the Double Facade. A key part of the design process has been working with industrial partners to develop the design and realise a full-scale prototype. This has been tested and evaluated in terms of key aspects of the comfort, weather and aesthetic performance. An appraisal of the product demonstrates that it achieves proof of concept; it is highly prefabricated and enhanced occupant comfort and carbon emissions targets can be met.

Selim, Kareem Hassan. "Building Integrated Water Efficiency Strategies that Generate Energy and Enhance Human Thermal Comfort." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/339043.

Full text
Abstract:
Building integrated water efficiency strategies can generate energy or reduce the energy consumption of the building. Solar and wind are two natural forces that are commonly used to provide energy to buildings today; water, on the other hand, is usually ushered off site and not utilized to its full potential. The question is how to find a way to reduce the energy used to get the water needed for the building, because water is an important aspect to care about and save. This will require several methods and strategies in order to find the best and most efficient way of doing this. This thesis is proposing a smarter way of utilizing one of earth's most precious resources as a guideline for the designer to conserve energy by using a water harvesting system, grey water system and reuse, water use reduction, water heating and cooling. Concentrating more on generating energy or reducing energy consumption using water by fuel cells, solar water heater, photovoltaic thermal and algae. Finally, the proposed method is to generate energy using algae, while growing it to the building's façade facing south. Algae panels use water and sunlight to grow, then are harvested in the building to generate enough energy to power it. Algae is the most known source of energy now and only used for industrial purposes, however applying it to a research building called Engineering Innovative building got 134 feet south façade, will be a huge source of energy to power it up. It also can be used for educational purposes to study.

Abstract:
It was first stated 200 years ago, and reiterated numerous times since, that "architecture is frozen music". While this romantic analogy sufficiently satisfies many in the realm of architecture, it actually is a sad way of defining an idea so inherently lively. Goethe's quote conjures up the notion of a world that is silent, one in which we can see the notes but never hear the music because we are trapped by stasis in time. Like the note admired on a piece of paper, architecture in this world is static regardless of the changing conditions around it. What if the "frozen" part could be removed from this concept, and the element of time could play an active role in the built environment? An architecture that can exist in a sense of time is one in which the musical note can be played. Through the ability to change with time and be changed by time architecture can directly respond to its inhabitants, environment, and contextual factors. A rich melody of interaction can then be initiated in which the built world can talk back. Naturally, the first point of this contact would be the building's facade, and it is here that there is the greatest opportunity to reach the largest audience. The outer "face" of a building has always been a feature of significance for both designer and customer. For centuries the ornamental features of a building were what distinguished its purpose and place in society. From the elaborite pediments of the Greeks to the inticatly carved reliefs of the Itailians, the ornament of a structure told a static story about the creators and inhabitants of the structure. Now, the technology is available to make this aspect of architecture talk to us by becoming a dymanic, interactive, and kinetic component. In order for this facade system to transcend the boundries of conventional architecture it must utilize precocious architectural means, methods, and materials. These new communication systems include, but are not limited to, touch, light, sound, and electromagnictic fields. As any of these stimuli are precieved by the facade, it can have the ability to react proportional to the input. Esentially, the facade system will be able to customize itself depending on the conditions presented. Similar to a computer operating system, the new facade will provide a generic mass producible platform that can be individualized by it user. The users of this system may be the architect, client, occupant, viewer, environment, regional context, technologic connection, or global community, depending on the specific installation. And most importantly, both the user and the facade have the capacity to be changed or altered at any time, meaning that the fundamental characteristics of the project will never be frozen. In this manner, the new architectural ornament will go beyond the static nature of its predecessors and become one that the viewer can actively communicate with.

O'Connor, Zena. "Facade colour and aesthetic response: Examining patterns of response within the context of urban design and planning policy in Sydney." University of Sydney, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/4093.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The overall aim of this research was to examine aesthetic response to façade colour. Drawing on a range of theories and studies from environment-behaviour studies (EBS), Nasar’s (1994) probabilistic model of aesthetic response to building attributes provided a theoretical framework within which to examine patterns of response. Prompted by the Development Control Plan for Sydney Regional Environmental Plan: Sydney Harbour Catchment (NSWDOP, 2005), this research also linked its aims and methods to planning policy in Sydney. The main research questions focussed on whether changes in aesthetic response are associated with variations in façade colour; and whether changes in judgements about building size, congruity and preference are associated with differences in façade colour. A quasi-experimental research design was used to examine patterns of aesthetic response. The independent variable was represented by four façade colours in two classifications. An existing process, environmental colour mapping, was augmented with digital technology and used to isolate, identify and manipulate the independent variable and for preparation of visual stimuli (Foote, 1983; Iijima, 1995; Lenclos, 1977; Porter, 1997). Façade colour classifications were created from extant colour theories (including those of Albers, 1963; Hard & Sivik, 2001 and Itten, 1961). The façade colour classifications were further developed using F-sort and Q-sort methodology (Amin, 2000; Miller, Wiley & Wolfe, 1986; Stephenson, 1953). Ten dependent variables, linked to overall aesthetic response, were drawn from studies relating to environmental evaluation, building congruity and preference (Groat, 1992; Janssens, 2001; Russell, 1988; Russell, 2003; Russell, Ward & Pratt, 1981; Wohlwill & Harris, 1980). The dependent variables were presented in the form of a semantic differential rating scale and a sample group of 288 evaluated the visual stimuli. The Latin-square technique was used for the controlled presentation of visual stimuli. Factor analysis, correlation analysis and analysis of variance were applied to the data. The findings indicate that variations in aesthetic response are associated with differences in façade colour. Judgements about building size varied by up to 5% and buildings featuring contrasting façade colours were judged to be larger and more dominant. Judgements about a building’s congruity varied by up to 13% and buildings that featured harmonious colours were considered to be more congruous. Preference varied and harmonious façade colours were not necessarily preferred over contrasting façade colours. The outcomes from this research suggest that a new approach to façade colour within the context of planning policy may be appropriate. A model of façade colour evaluation is presented and, unlike current planning guidelines, the model allows for a participatory approach to façade colour evaluation and specification. The model allows for factors that may influence aesthetic response to façade colour (such as contextual, perceptual and idiographic factors) as well as variation in architectural expression with respect to façade colour.

Abstract:
The study reaches an understanding of the boundaries that a society can set, for the provision of comfort conditions using energy efficient building skins in prisons. The aim is to establish the role of facade design in attaining a possible balance between the provision of a humane environment for inmates that would help in rehabilitation efforts on one hand, and the penal system on the other. This study examines the factors that affect the balance between the costs to society of such comfort in energy terms, against rehabilitation. The study provides guidelines to establish this balance in design of prison facades in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Emphasis will be on variables that have impact on the design and configurations of building skin. In Western societies, the reform policy in the 18th century produced a new kind of architecture associated with it at that period (Evans, 1982). Prison architecture was part of the punishment regime. The effects of the indoor environment on the inmates and their physical and psychological comfort were not considered (Peters, 1995). The main role of the buildings was to operate as a punishment symbol not only to the offenders, but also to put fear into everyone passing by them (UNSDRI, 1975). The special configuration of the prison buildings of the 18`h century was therefore manifested in the patterns of the indoor space as well as the facade design (Pearce, 1995). Modern concepts of penal theories emphasise the rehabilitation of the prisoners (Lenci, 1977). It is believed that the contemporary institutions should focus more on the effect of the building environment on the individual (Christopher, 1990). Consequently, the contemporary design of prison buildings is to foster a more positive environment. This is mediated by the creation of an environment that is proactive rather than reactive (Spens, 1994). A positive and healthy environment is essential for the inmates' rehabilitation. In order to achieve this goal, comfort is a main concern. The question of comfort in prisons is complex. Large numbers of quantitative and qualitative variables have been identified. This study traces and investigates the development of penal theories, in order to identify the importance of such variables for rehabilitation of inmates. A historical review was essential to fully understand the forces that shaped the development of prisons. The review includes development of prisons in different societies and discusses the penal systems in those societies. The analysis of the historical development of prison buildings also revealed the importance of facade features that reflected the penal theories of certain times and of certain societies. The thesis takes prisons in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a case study. The UAE prisons have moved through different phases of development. The new policy of the Ministry of Interior emphasises the need for rehabilitation and improving the conditions of the inmates. A prototype design has been developed as a model for all prisons in Abu Dhabi. The new design, with its improved environmental conditions, has significant implications on energy consumption with the increase in area per inmate and the introduction of air-conditioning. Emphasis on comfort as one of the main design factors will affect the layout of prisons, the design of the building skin, and the services provided. The proposed prototype is simulated using thermal simulation modelling software in order to understand the thermal performance of the facades. Alternative scenarios, based on prison and design theories and new facade technologies, are developed and compared to the proposed prototype. The thesis concludes with a discussion on the role of facade design on the sustainability of prison buildings taking into account the social, environmental and technical related variables. The thesis argues that the phrase sustainable facade design has always referred to the introduction of appropriate facade configuration in order to achieve energy efficiency. In prison buildings, however, a typology driven by cultural values and social theories, socioeconomic factors have great impacts on the sustainable design of prisons' facades. Hence, achieving sustainable prison facade design is conditioned by coupling social aspects of prison buildings with technical energy saving measures.

Abstract:
As inhabitants on the earth and as designers in societies, we always think and try to make the world better, to be sustainable. Regarding everyday life in city, to enhance social sustainability, it is revealed that walkability and diversity mean a lot to livability and lovability. Building façades affect peoples’ walking behavior (Choi, 2012), and an area has better be with a good mix of residence and commerce etc. So in this study, focusing on shops which everyone has access to, I tried to seek a hint how to encourage shop owners to make the façades lively by themselves. Why by themselves is related to the idea of bottom-up urbanism that came up from a people- first point of view. The main theory used is affordance theory, originally defined as “what it offers the animal, what it provides or furnishes” (Gibson, 1979, p.127). With this, the study considered three affording-afforded relationships, that is, architects-shop owners, shop owners-shop owners, and the whole environment around façades- pedestrians, only the former two were investigated this time though. Using pixel analysis with photos, arrangement of elements around façades, its tendency, and whether cluster by elements exists or not were studied. After the investigation done, the study was concluded suggesting to reflect the result of observation on peoples’ behavior with affordance, and perhaps to make a design guide as a feedback from the world of everyday tactics to that of strategy, that are supposed to be closer, to make them in a loop to go on.

This thesis contributes to the improvement of Double Skin facades' thermal performance in warm climates. A new design for DSF was proposed and evaluated using an experimental study on a scaled model and Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations. The proposed facade named IS-DSF (Interstitial slat-blind DSF) showed the capability to reduce overheating risk in the cavity due to two applied strategies: shading devices’ specific placement and wind-induced ventilation improvement. Finally, a framework was developed for the implementation of IS-DSF in warm climates applicable at the early stage of building design.

Abstract:
This research seeks to find a design solution for reducing the energy usage in high-rise office buildings in Singapore. There are numerous methods and techniques that could be employed to achieve the purpose of designing energy efficient buildings. The Thesis explores the viability of double-skin fa??ades (DSF) to provide natural ventilation as an energy efficient solution for office buildings in hot and humid environment by using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations and case study methodologies. CFD simulations were used to examine various types of DSF used in office buildings and the behaviour of airflow and thermal transfer through the DSF; the internal thermal comfort levels of each office spaces were analyzed and compared; and an optimization methodology was developed to explore the best DSF configuration to be used in high-rise office buildings in the tropics. The correlation between the fa??ade configurations, the thermal comfort parameters, and the internal office space energy consumption through the DSF is studied and presented. The research outcome of the Thesis has found that significant energy saving is possible if natural ventilation strategies could be exploited with the use of DSF. A prototype DSF configuration which will be best suited for the tropical environment in terms of its energy efficiency through cross ventilation strategy is proposed in this Thesis. A series of comprehensive and user-friendly nomograms for design optimization in selecting the most appropriate double-skin fa??ade configurations with considerations of various orientations for the use in high-rise office buildings in the tropics were also presented.

Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/21501/.

Abstract:
In terms of technology, BIM is also part of the worldwide change Industry 4.0, which in essence is the trend toward automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies and processes. Generative design is an iterative process that involves a program that will generate a certain number of outputs that meet certain constraints, so that a designer is able to fine tune the feasible project by changing minimal and maximal values of an interval in which a variable of the program meets the set of constraints, in order to reduce or augment the number of outputs to choose from. The initial idea of this thesis work was to manipulate few of the most basic geometric elements in order to get a complex parametric shape inspired from the honeycomb as the natures perfectly generated the element. This preliminary idea, together with the ambition to use this transformation for a façade system in a structural building led us to a series of decisions to try and connect two “worlds”, in the sense that we have a CAD environment that lets us create the geometry and a BIM environment where everything is represented by a specific level of information. This geometry is given a specific set of rules that drive and manipulate each of the elements it contains in a certain fashion. This methodology, as well as the communication and the interaction between the software adopted and their programming environments, is what makes the generative design possible. This result from the Grasshopper algorithm is then being created in the CAD environment in Rhinoceros3D, which then can be opened through Rhino.Inside.Revit and give us a direct real-time preview in the BIM environment in Revit. Through a long series of testing and experimenting with the geometry, we get to a point where we have a functional algorithm that creates and manipulates the geometry, in order to foster many design opportunities for structural and architectural designers.

Abstract:
Extruded aluminium has become the material of choice for building envelope owing to its lightness, wide range of possibilities for profile design, durability and the eco-friendly attitude. In the light of recent technological developments in metal and glass industries, there has been various new approaches towards aluminum curtain wall systems which are mostly preferred by architects in high-rise buildings. Herein, the panel curtain wall system is determined as innovative and the modern aluminium curtain wall system. Furthermore, in the recent prestigious high-rise buildings, the demand of the architects and the contractors begins to replace the conventional curtain wall system which is constructed via stick construction technique, with panel curtain wall system which is applied to the building in a modular form . The main aim of this study is to investigate why the panel curtain wall system comes to the forefront especially for high-rise buildings. Accordingly, the basic architectural, structural and constructional design principles of unitized aluminium curtain wall systems are defined, analyzed and then the advantages and disadvantages of this system are pointed out from an architectural point of view. In order to evaluate the performance of panel curtain wall system against environmental factors, the facade tests, which are new and still-developing methods in Turkey, are used. The extensive facade tests have been conducted on full-scale specimen under field conditions reproduced in an equipped test chamber by authorized facade testing company and the assessment of this curtain wall performance was provided accordance with related standards. The two story full-size specimen, was 3000 mm to 7600 mm, belongs to one of the prestigious office towers constructed in Istanbul. The facade tests conducted to the specimen include watertightness, air permeability, wind resistance and building movement tests. In this study, the performance criteria of panel curtain wall system were investigated not only against environmental factors but also against human sourced factors. It is expected that this study will provide a guideline for system designers on the future research and development phase and for architects on the selection of curtain wall systems for their buildings due to the conducted test results and other advantages taken throughout this study.

Abstract:
Design for efficient buildings is a complex process because of interaction between several stakeholders throughout life cycle phases. Today, many standards allow design to be assist taking in account energy performance and other performance aspects, such as indoor comfort, carbon footprint or project management. In this context, early-design stage plays a key role: early-design choices define design strategies that can influence the following phases (developed design, construction and operational). In order to optimize the whole construction process, constructability sets some principles based on the anticipation of risks about performance variations. Even if some tools and methods exist, in France constructability still needs to be formally integrated in design process. This thesis has two main goals: it aims to introduce the discipline of constructability in early-design stage and, on the other hand, it provides a performance assessment for conceptual design choices. The result consists in an assessment method able to support programme managers and designers to verify early-design relevance concerning constructability and performance aspects. The evaluation is based on seven criteria established by constructability concepts and performance-based tools. The method is applied to three case studies in order to show its applicability for both an early-design holistic assessment and a decision support approach concerning traditional or adaptive envelope components

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis work is the development of a decision-support methodology for the energy design of sustainable buildings. The proposed methodology consists of: (1) a set of sixteen indicators of energy performance, covering the three dimensions of the concept of sustainability (environmental, economic and user comfort aspects) and based on a whole life-cycle approach; (2) a framework for the calculation of these indicators, adapted to the level of knowledge and detail of buildings in the early design phases; (3) a decision making roadmap, proposed as a sequential model for structuring decision making throughout the design process; and (4) a knowledge base of building elements, compiling the necessary technical, environmental and economic data for evaluating energy performance. This methodology is aimed to assist architects and engineers who participate in the energy design of office buildings within a French context. An assessment tool has been developed as a first application of the proposed methodology in order to determine its contribution to the process of decision making. The methodology has been validated through various case studies at each stage of the design process: from the schematic design phase to the detailed design phase. In particular, the integration of a double skin facade, whose impact on building performance is still not fully understood, was assessed

The increasing of using precast concrete panels, lack of standardization, lack of studies on precast concrete panels and its connections devices on Brazil, has led to the need of manual and design criteria of precast concrete panel connections. Although the designers and precast concrete panel manufacturers is using foreign standards when its available and their empirical knowledge on the specification and connections design criteria, the lack of manuals become hard to find solutions that provide easiness of precast concrete panel s employment. Connections are fundamental part of the precast structures. For the building assembly are necessary linking devices which influences the production process, the efficiency of casting, storage, transport, handling and especially in the assembly on site. This work presents the concept, technical features and functions of main types of spandrel panel connections and the main structure of building, and identifies typical connections and the general design recommendation. This report purpose the put in connection as a new classification of connection type.

Abstract:
Even though computer simulation of environmental factors and manufacturing technologies have experienced a fast development, architectural workflows that can take advantage of the possibilities created by these developments have been left behind and architectural design processes have not evolved at the same rate. This research presents design to fabrication workflows that explore data driven design to improve performance of facades, implementing for this purpose computational tools to handle environmental data complexity and proposes robotic fabrication technologies to facilitate façade components fabrication. During this research three design experiments were conducted that tested variations on the design to fabrication workflow, approaching the flow of information in top-down and bottom-up processes. Independent variables such as material, environmental conditions and structural behavior, are the framework in which workflow instances are generated based on dependent variables such as geometry, orientation and assembly logic. This research demonstrates the feasibility of a robotic based fabrication method informed by a multi-variable computational framework plus a simulation evaluator integrated into a design to fabrication workflow and put forward the discussion of a fully automated scenario.

The sites I visit turned into routines a long time ago. Everywhere someone has decided what should be there and what will not fit. I retreat into my daydreams, away from everyday life. A longing for something different, something wonderful. I decided to go where I've never been, searching for something unknown. Sometimes the escape and search is similar, and with the same goal. This is a story about a journey to a new place, which is familiar in more ways than one. It's about everything that is designated, but by whom and for whom? About possibilities, to see what the world could be, potential, dreams and hope. The project aims to implement a fantasy, and show a different reality. I found a place on the border between urban buildings and vast nature. An end, a beginning and a passage. There is a tree, a symbol of knowledge and vegetation, a premonition of what's coming. The closest we come to untouched nature begins on the other side of the slope. But here, where I stand, everything is decided. I understand that my world is synthetic. My project is a site-specific design in Akalla, where I created a tree wig and a stone landscape.

This research examined the significance of automotive facade particularly car facade and its relationship to design, image and identity. This research is based on the assumption that the car exterior design delivers both, product character and messages which influence the consumer perceptions. The car fayade normally reflects the company image and identity, the profile (side) section shows the functions either saloon, convertible or estate, while the rear section usually becomes a follower to be incorporated within the overall design. To make a comparison to humans, a car fayade resembles the face where normally the reflections on personality, character and expression ofthe person are experienced. The test revealed a relationship between car fayade and human face that in tum suggested that both are operated within the context of common themes and manners. Interpretation of the research findings also contextualised the anthropomorphic and zoomorphic references in car fayades.

Abstract:
Purpose: The building sector accounts for 40 % of the total energy consumption in Sweden today, and the largest proportion is consumed during the operating phase. From the year 2020 and onwards, all new buildings should be erected as zero-emissionbuildings. The building’s design can reduce energy demands, but the current legal requirements do not favour energy-efficient designs. This study focuses on the design’s importance for the energy efficiency of buildings, i.e., energy-saving design. The impact of specific measures is difficult to calculate due to the complexity of reality. This study aims to highlight the measures that could reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings. Method: In order to provide answers to the issues stated in the report and to achieve the objective of the study, case studies are being conducted investigating three commercial buildings where deliberate decisions were made to use energy-reducing measures. Results and conclusions are based on qualitative interviews and literature studies. Findings: The energy-reducing design measures found to be of most importance used in the studied buildings are the form factor, the window portion and the thermal storage capacity. Moreover, significant savings are possible by carefully consider how solar energy can be limited or used in the building. Generally, buildings tends to become more technical, therefore technical knowledge early in the process is important to reach a good result. Economic incentives and clear objectives with right focus are also important for optimizing a building’s energy performance. The wording and the requirement levels in the Swedish building regulations highly controls the construction of energy efficient buildings. Implications: This study shows how energy efficient design is made today and provides an indication of what can be done and what should be prioritized. By imposing requirements on consumed energy instead of bought, energy efficient design could be favoured. Furthermore, this study suggests that a balance between windows, façade and solar shading are important energy-reducing measures. Regardless of selected energyreducing measures, a good performance is essential. Finally, this study shows that a methodical use of existing knowledge and technology makes a difference. Limitations: A lifecycle approach provides an overall picture of a building’s energy consumption. However, this study is based on the energy consumption during the operating phase. The result of this study does not take economic or aesthetic factors into account. This study is a comparative case study and is based on few but carefully matched cases. The selected cases are commercial buildings where deliberate decisions were made to use energy-reducing measures.

Abstract:

In Finland, approximately 80 % of the facades of buildingsare manufactured as precast units. Currently one of theobstacles to making the overall design and construction ofprecast building facades more efficient is the inefficientexchange of data about facades between architects, structuralengineers and precast element manufacturers. The product modelapproach seems to offer a new methodology for data exchange andsharing which would solve many of the current problems. Thisthesis presents the results of research in which this approachwas tested.

The prevailing way of designing facades was chosen as areference process model. Based on an analysis of data needs inthe different stages of the process a product data model of afacade was developed. The product data model was restricted tofacades only and does not include other information about thebuilding. Central data structures in the conceptual schemadefine how a precast concrete facade consists of precastconcrete units, i.e., elements. Structural wall layers that mayhave openings form the elements.

The conceptual schema was implemented as a prototype whichwas based on existing software, modified and further developed. The prototype was tested by an architectural design company, astructural design company and a manufacturer. The mainconclusion of testing was that the data produced in thearchitectural design is directly usable in further design. Thestructural or element design may use the architectural data assuch. Also, it is possible to create applications that takeinto account the architect's preferred design approach.

Abstract:
This thesis highlights a method of arriving at form that minimizes the need for high end technology and complex mathematical models, yet has structural principles of load flow at the highlighted methods core. Similar to how graphical statics assisted earlier architects and engineers to arrive at form by relating form and forces, this thesis suggests a method of form finding that relates the flow of stresses within solid masses to possible load-bearing façades. Looking to nature, where an abundance of efficient structural solutions can be found, this thesis focuses on a tree-like structural form called the dendriform. In doing so, this thesis explores the idea that through an understanding of typical load flow patterns and the removal of minimally stressed material of the solid body, dendriforms can be revealed that qualitatively exemplify load flow yet maintain an architectural aesthetic.

Abstract:
Facades mounted on the exterior of buildings protect the interior from aggressive environments, besides contributing to their aesthetics and technical performance. Unfortunately, despite some serious facade failures involving some deaths and injuries, their inspection and maintenance, which are essential for public safety, have been generally ignored. On July 16, 2009, a large concrete facade element, weighing 320 kg, detached from the building structure of a Montreal hotel and fell on its exterior sidewalk cafe, instantaneously killing a young woman celebrating her birthday and injuring her husband. Some major U.S. cities, such as New York, Chicago and Boston have learnt from such tragedies, and nine American cities have enacted by-laws or ordnances requiring mandatory periodic facade inspections to ensure public safety. However, Canadian cities do not have similar stringent regulations to guide design, construction, maintenance and life-cycle performance of facades to ensure their safety over service life. The National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) includes safety provisions for building components which implement environmental separation; however, the NBCC and other relevant CSA standards do not deal adequately with the maintenance, performance and durability issues related to the performance of these facades. This research program is an attempt to develop and recommend strategies to minimize these risks through mandatory inspection and maintenance programs, and to eliminate similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to the field of interaction design by exploring the use of nonverbal cues in FTF communication with the aim of generating knowledge that can be used as an alternative approach for assessing and designing text-based CMC media. To achieve this goal, movement in is analysed in the nonverbal and collaborative dimensions of FTF communication. This presents the possibility to assess text-based CMC media based on a better understanding of the use of nonverbal cues and FTF communication as a standard. The assessment and design based on this concept is tested in the design phase. This process provides a platform for discussion and evaluation of an alternative approach for designing text-based CMC media with a focus on interaction between communicators.

Abstract:

The purpose of this project is to test and improve people’s ability of face recognition.

Although there are some tests on the internet with the same purpose, the problem is that people

may feel bored and give up before finishing the tests. Consequently they may not benefit from

testing nor from training. To solve this problem, face recognition and online game are put

together in this project. The game is supposed to provide entertainment when people are playing,

so that more people can take the test and improve their abilities of face recognition.

In the game design, the game is assumed to take place in the face recognition lab, which is

an imaginary lab. The player plays the main role in this game and asked to solve a number of

problems. There are several scenarios waiting for the player, which mainly need face recognition

skills from the player. At the end the player obtains the result of evaluation of her/his skills in

face recognition.
