Abstract:
Face recognition has been largely used in biometric field as a security measure at air ports, passport verification, criminals' list verification, visa processing, and so on. Various literature studies suggested different approaches for face recognition systems and most of these studies have limitations with low performance rates. Eigenfaces and principle component analysis (PCA) can be considered as most important face recognition approaches in the literature. There is a need to develop algorithms and approaches that overcome these disadvantages and improve performance of face recognition systems. At the same time, there is a lack of literature studies which are related to face recognition systems based on EigenFaces and PCA. Therefore, this work includes a comparative study of literature researches related to Eigenfaces and PCA for face recognition systems. The main steps, strengths and limitations of each study will be discussed. Many recommendations were suggested in this study.

Abstract:
Objectives This study conducted a systematic literature review to examine research trends and confirm the char-acteristics and effects of modulating variables by examining research on non-face-to-face video group counseling. Methods Among the studies related to non-face-to-face video group counseling, papers published from January 2020 to August 2023 were collected. The academic search database used for thesis search was the Academic Research Information Service (RISS), the Korean Academy of Information (KISS), and the Academic Database Service (DBpia). The search terms used for the research were used by combining non-face-to-face, video, group, program, counseling, and effect. Based on the selection criteria and exclusion criteria, the final 31 papers were used for analysis. Results Looking at the classification by symptom level, a significant number of studies were concentrated in the general group (87.1%). In terms of classification according to the stage of development, adults (61.3%) and college students or higher (29.0%). The theoretical approach was mindfulness meditation (35.7%), cognitive emotional behavior (17.9%), and integrated approach (14.3%), and the intervention areas were emotions (24.7%), stress (16.4%), and self-concept (15.1%). Regarding the intervention effect, improvements in emotions, stress, inter-personal relationships, and cognitive domains were confirmed. The self-concept and subjective well-being were mixed with conflicting reports. Conclusions In terms of symptoms, additional research is needed including the clinical group including social anxiety, and in terms of developmental stage, including elementary school students and the elderly. Since con-flicting reports are mixed in the areas of self-concept and subjective well-being, a comprehensive and systematic analysis including meta-research needs to be conducted. This study is significant in that it understands the re-search trends of non-face-to-face video group counseling and the effects of each intervention area, and suggests future research directions.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Susan A. Michalczyk<br>Children's literature possesses the power to crumble walls of prejudice, open the mind to unlimited possibilities and perhaps most importantly, entertain children whatever their race, age or social status. Many people have such fond memories of the books they read as children that, should you demand of any American college student what his favorite book was as a child, and he will find it difficult to narrow his selection down to just one. Ask any American child what her favorite movie during childhood and inherently nine out of ten children will choose a movie made by Walt Disney. Indeed literature and the stories of childhood play an important role in the intellectual and psychological development of human beings. During childhood, the literature children read and have read to them often lay the seeds for their future views of themselves and the world. If this were the case, then how much caution should be taken with the themes of these books? Children's literature is defined as "books that are good for children, written with their general necessities and entertainment in mind." The “goodness” of these books is determined not only in their vivid creativity and wildly imaginative stories, but as well in the long lasting lessons they impart upon the children who read them. These books give a child a glimpse into distant lands far away from the suburb they live in or the city in whose parks they play every day. As well, literature can also cultivate cultural prejudices and stereotypes that can either damage a child's developing psyche or improve it. From its inception, children's literature has always been meant to shape and mold children to the will of society. The questions remains to be answered, if literature holds such power over us, then what control should responsible publishers, teachers, librarians and parents exercise in determining what their children should be reading? Where does one draw the line between education and politics in the world of children's literature? In order to fully examine this question and comprehend its implications, one must first examine the history of children's literature and what it originally desired to achieve. Then, once the evolution has been traced, one can analyze the future and determine where the shifts that have occurred in children's literature throughout the eras are leading us in the years to follow<br>Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2003<br>Submitted to: Boston College. Key, Laura. "Face value : representations of money in American literature, 1896-1944." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2012. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/face-value-representations-of-money-in-american-literature-18961944(6a2ed6f3-0a55-4dd7-91b8-a96ebedffef2).html.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the significance of socio-historical conceptions of money in relation to the development of American literary modernism from 1896 to 1944. Taking as its starting point Jean-Joseph Goux's contention that there was a correlation between the end of gold-backed money in France and the birth of French modernist literature, this study considers how far this claim is tenable in the American case. In 1896, the key debate surrounding the presidential election was over whether money should be backed by gold or silver specie, which became a major public issue. Faith in the gold standard was challenged, raising the possibility that the source of monetary value was negotiable. Subsequent policy changes, financial panics, the Depression and the World Wars all affected public conceptions of money, until the Bretton Woods Agreement instituted an international gold standard supported by the gold-backed U.S. dollar in 1944, effectively re-establishing a firm relationship between gold and money. Since the 1990s, New Economic Criticism has sought to understand the ways in which money and literature converge throughout history. Although several studies of money and American literary realism have been undertaken, the relationship between money and American literary modernism specifically has largely been overlooked in scholarship. Analysing the works of Robert Herrick, Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Dos Passos, this thesis contends that a certain strand of American modernism developed as a series of reflections upon the relationship between money, value and realistic representation, in which the limitations of realism are exposed. Calling for a re-historicisation of the relationship between money and literature, this study argues that particular socio-historical moments in the story of American money emphasised the fluidity of money, sending social conceptions of value into flux in a society in which money functioned as the general equivalent by which all values were measured. These moments when accepted face values were called into question offered American writers the language and structure by which to consider and challenge the limitations of existing literary forms by comparing money with literature. Both paper money and literature, forms of representation which function via the inscription of words upon paper, contain an inherent duality; they have both a material value, in terms of their composition from paper and ink, and a deeper capacity to represent a certain value in the society in which they circulate. Modernism is concerned with such a duality, emphasising the materiality of the text and exposing the text's status as a representation that can never equal the reality that it represents. The authors discussed here confronted the discrepancy between written language as a reflection of the real world and words as material constructs in themselves through the metaphor of money, manifesting in both textual theme and structure, where the boundaries of realist representation are broken down via the use of unconventional forms. Utilising the method of close textual analysis and situating the texts examined within the wider socio-historical contexts of which they were born, the thesis focuses upon four different moments in the story of U.S. money and literature. This historically contingent approach facilitates the argument that these literary texts function as sites at which to examine and come to terms with contemporaneous social issues, helping to broaden both the purpose and structure of American literature in the early-twentieth century.

Tastekin, Emel. "Another look at Orientalism : Western literature in the face of Islam." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/33849.

Full text
Abstract:
Another Look at Orientalism seeks to establish a genealogical link between the fields of literary criticism and Islamic studies through a case study of the Qur’anic scholarship of Abraham Geiger (1810-1874). Responding to Edward Said’s thesis in Orientalism (1978), which polemically subordinates all Orientalist scholarship of the nineteenth century to some form of imperialist motive, this dissertation argues that Geiger, as a member of the Jewish diaspora in a German-speaking land, reacted against the Christian bias in the philological scholarship of his time by highlighting the heading “Abrahamic” in his work Was hat Mohammed aus dem Judenthume aufgenommen? (1833). I see Geiger’s work as one of the first attempts to critique the internal imperialism of Western/European culture and, as such, a precursor of comparative and postcolonial literary studies of the twentieth century. From a theoretical angle, I combine Jacques Derrida’s philosophy, particularly on “Abrahamic hospitality” and “exemplarity,” with perspectives drawn from diaspora and postcolonial studies, such as those of Aamir Mufti, Jonathan and Daniel Boyarin, Sander Gilman, Susannah Heschel and Amos Funkenstein. The aim is to show that Geiger’s pioneering influence on the “objective” study of Islam—however motivated by his defence of Judaism in face of Christianity—should be seen as a gesture of hospitality towards Islam. I ultimately argue that Islam was not always exterior but also implicated in the construction of modern European identity. In the first chapter, I show how the corroboration of a Judaeo-Christian essence in Western literary criticism, particularly in the works of canonical critics like Matthew Arnold and Erich Auerbach, was informed by the nineteenth-century background of the “Jewish question.” In the second chapter, I trace how postmodern Jewish theory, as influenced by Derrida’s philosophy, has contended with the supersessionist and hegemonic implications of the Judaeo-Christian “hyphen.” Next, I turn to my case study of Abraham Geiger and contextualize his work with respect to the methods of German Orientalism and in relation to the German-Jewish emancipation struggle. I then analyze Geiger’s Was hat Mohammed aus dem Judenthume aufgenommen? in the light of Derrida’s philosophy of exemplarity and hospitality, as explained in Chapter Two.

Full text
Abstract:

Glasburgh, Michele M. "Chick lit: the new face of postfeminist fiction?" Thesis, School of Information and Library Science, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1901/349.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a content analysis of ten chick lit books, a genre of women’s fiction. Books were analyzed for five postfeminist characteristics as defined by Susan Faludi’s backlash theory, outlined in Backlash: The Undeclared War Against Women and in further research on popular culture’s notions of womanhood: 1) negative reaction to second wave feminism, 2) focus on the individual instead of a collective sisterhood, 3) desire for more traditional femininity through domesticity, consumerism, romance, and motherhood, 4) female identity crisis causing fears of a man shortage, a loudly ticking biological clock, and career burnout, and 5) feelings of anxiety over ability to make the correct future decisions. Analysis has found that chick lit does generally reinforce the notions of postfeminism/backlash, however the characters displayed anxiety over how to incorporate feminine paths into their lives and generally disregard motherhood.

Abstract:
Face recognition is a crucial and rapidly evolving field within computer vision and artificial intelligence. The human face is one important element for recognizing a person in a group. The mechanism used by the human brain for face recognition is not yet fully understood, making it a complex problem. Over the past decade, there have been significant advancements in both the accuracy and applicability of face recognition systems. Deep learning techniques, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have played a pivotal role in achieving state-of-the-art performance in face recognition tasks. This paper proposes a review of research on face recognition techniques, algorithms and existing applications, with their advantages and disadvantages. It also includes a comparison of the results obtained with various algorithms and the related limitations. In the last part, it presents future directions of development in the field of face recognition.

Abstract:
Since 2020, with the spread of the pandemic, the face-to-face teaching mode transformed into online mode with no other alternative. With regard to the tertiary level, all courses which were offered physically had to be adopted to the novel approach making both teaching and learning challenging. The present study examines learners’ viewpoint and what they have experienced so far in learning literature online during the pandemic. Consequently, the study provides an insight into the prevalent teaching mode and explores effective strategies followed using the appropriate pedagogical online tools or platforms, when adopting the literary content for diverse learning styles, and student engagement synchronously and asynchronously. The study involves undergraduates at a private university following their Bachelor of Education in English. These students enrolled to a physical learning mode though the pandemic has made them into learning online. Thus, the study compares their views on learning physically and online. Due to the closure of the university, both qualitative and quantitative data are gathered via an online questionnaire with the due consent of the participants. The findings indicate learning literature online is more effective compared to the traditional face to face learning mode. The results indicate that online learning enhances leaners’ study skills, stimulates, and facilitates their interest in learning, which transforms learning into a collaborative experience. Khan, Ayesha. Adolescents and reproductive health in Pakistan: A literature review. Population Council, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2000.1042.

Full text
Abstract:
This report reviews research and findings on adolescents and reproductive health in Pakistan. The material is drawn from a range of national surveys and medical research, as well as information gathered by nongovernmental organizations. Although adolescents make up a quarter of the population of Pakistan, they are still a new subject for research. The characterization of adolescents for this review is individuals ages 10–19, whether or not they are married, sexually active, or parents. The discussion of the research material is based on the assumption that adolescence is a developmental phase, a transition from childhood to adulthood. Basic data on education, employment, and reproductive health among adolescents shows that they are not receiving adequate schooling and capability building to equip them for the future. Due to their relative youth, lack of decision-making power, and incomplete personal development, adolescents are ill equipped to handle the reproductive health burden they face. Policies and programs, as well as legal provisions, do not protect adolescents and need to be designed to meet the needs of adolescents without disrupting their development into adults.

Murad, M. Hassan, Stephanie M. Chang, Celia Fiordalisi, et al. Improving the Utility of Evidence Synthesis for Decision Makers in the Face of Insufficient Evidence. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcwhitepaperimproving.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Healthcare decision makers strive to operate on the best available evidence. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) Program aims to support healthcare decision makers by producing evidence reviews that rate the strength of evidence. However, the evidence base is often sparse or heterogeneous, or otherwise results in a high degree of uncertainty and insufficient evidence ratings. Objective: To identify and suggest strategies to make insufficient ratings in systematic reviews more actionable. Methods: A workgroup comprising EPC Program members convened throughout 2020. We conducted interative discussions considering information from three data sources: a literature review for relevant publications and frameworks, a review of a convenience sample of past systematic reviews conducted by the EPCs, and an audit of methods used in past EPC technical briefs. Results: Several themes emerged across the literature review, review of systematic reviews, and review of technical brief methods. In the purposive sample of 43 systematic reviews, the use of the term “insufficient” covered both instances of no evidence and instances of evidence being present but insufficient to estimate an effect. The results of the literature review and review of the EPC Program systematic reviews illustrated the importance of clearly stating the reasons for insufficient evidence. Results of both the literature review and review of systematic reviews highlighted the factors decision makers consider when making decisions when evidence of benefits or harms is insufficient, such as costs, values, preferences, and equity. We identified five strategies for supplementing systematic review findings when evidence on benefit or harms is expected to be or found to be insufficient, including: reconsidering eligible study designs, summarizing indirect evidence, summarizing contextual and implementation evidence, modelling, and incorporating unpublished health system data. Conclusion: Throughout early scoping, protocol development, review conduct, and review presentation, authors should consider five possible strategies to supplement potential insufficient findings of benefit or harms. When there is no evidence available for a specific outcome, reviewers should use a statement such as “no studies” instead of “insufficient.” The main reasons for insufficient evidence rating should be explicitly described.

Dabrowski, Anna, and Pru Mitchell. Effects of remote learning on mental health and socialisation. Literature Review. Australian Council for Educational Research, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37517/978-1-74286-682-6.

Full text
Abstract:
This literature review focuses on the effects of remote learning on mental health, including acute mental health issues and possible ongoing implications for student wellbeing and socialisation. It provides an overview of some of the challenges that can impact on the mental health and relationships of young people, many of which have accelerated or become more complex during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the light of concern about rising antisocial behaviour and extremism there is a focus on socialisation and self-regulation on return to school post-pandemic. In the face of limited Australian research on these topics, the review takes a global focus and includes experiences from other countries as evidenced in the emerging research literature. Based on these findings the review offers advice to school leaders regarding the self-regulatory behaviours of students on return to school after periods of remote learning, and addresses social and emotional considerations as students transition back to school. It also considers ways in which schools can promote wellbeing and respond to mental health concerns as a way to address and prevent antisocial behaviours, recognise manifestations in extremism (including religious fundamentalism), and challenge a general rise in extremist views.

Kelly, Luke. Humanitarian Diplomacy Definitions and Approaches. Institute of Development Studies, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4dd.2024.018.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid evidence review explores humanitarian diplomacy, acknowledging its varied definitions and approaches amidst a growing literature. It reveals the complexity of assessing success across different contexts and delineates the challenges faced by humanitarian actors, often acting from positions of relative weakness compared to states. Key findings include the importance of negotiation practices, challenges in working with non-state armed groups, and the effectiveness of invoking humanitarian principles. While evidence points to some success in promoting humanitarian norms, coordination mechanisms face obstacles. The review underscores the need for further research to understand the nuances of humanitarian diplomacy across diverse contexts.

Abstract:
Authentication methods based on human traits, including fingerprint, face, iris, and palm print, have developed significantly, and currently they are mature enough to be reliably considered for human identification purposes. Recently, as a new research area, a few methods based on non-facial skin features such as vein patterns have been developed. This literature review paper explores some key biometric systems such as face recognition, iris recognition, fingerprint, and palm print, and discusses their respective advantages and disadvantages; then by providing a comprehensive analysis of these traits, and their applications, vein pattern recognition is reviewed.

Brassil, Anthony. The Consequences of Low Interest Rates for the Australian Banking Sector. Reserve Bank of Australia, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.47688/rdp2022-08.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a vast international literature exploring the consequences of low interest rates for various banking sectors. In this paper, I explore how this international literature relates to the Australian banking sector, which operates differently to other jurisdictions. In the face of low rates, the profitability of Australian banks has likely been less adversely affected than what the international literature would predict, but the flip side to this is that the pass-through of monetary policy to lending rates may have been more muted. I then use a recent advance in macrofinancial modelling to explore whether pass-through in Australia could turn negative – the so called 'reversal rate' – and find that the features of the Australian banking system mean a reversal rate is highly unlikely to exist in Australia.

Carter, Becky, and Paul Harvey. A Literature Review on Social Assistance and Capacity in Yemen. Institute of Development Studies, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/basic.2023.003.

Full text
Abstract:
Yemen is experiencing one of the worst crises in the world in terms of levels of suffering and humanitarian need. Intense civil war since 2014 has devastated the national economy, and approximately two-thirds of the population (21.6 million people) were assessed as being in need of humanitarian assistance and protection services in 2023 (OCHA 2023a). In response to such huge levels of need, a substantial humanitarian aid operation has been ongoing for the past eight years. The social assistance landscape in Yemen is a complex mix of humanitarian aid and the legacies of social protection systems, with local institutions still playing a role in the delivery of assistance. This paper reviews the literature, looking at the following issues: how best to balance humanitarian and social protection approaches; how to balance meeting acute immediate needs and support for longer-term systems in an ongoing conflict; and how to maintain support in the face of donor fatigue, and a complex and dynamic political landscape in Yemen. In a context where aid actors are committed to localisation, and in order to strengthen the nexus between development, humanitarian and peace-building approaches, it is vital to understand how local capacities have been affected by conflict and how the international aid effort is trying to engage with national and local actors. However, efforts to strengthen local capacities also need to take into account the divided governance in Yemen, ongoing conflict, and tensions between the main donor governments’ funding of assistance and the de facto authorities in the north of Yemen. This paper provides an empirical building block that will help to inform efforts to engage with local capacities by comprehensively mapping the complex mix of local and national actors involved in the management, delivery and regulation of social assistance. This review summarises the key literature and evidence on the capacities of national and international actors involved in providing social assistance in Yemen. It has been undertaken to inform a Yemen study on social assistance capacities and systems, part of the Better Assistance in Crises (BASIC) Research programme.[1] The primary audience is donors providing social assistance in Yemen, to help their decision-making on how to support local actors’ capacities for social assistance. Social assistance refers to the non-contributory transfers (provided as food, cash or vouchers) to poor and vulnerable households and individuals. Today in Yemen these transfers support millions of people, funded by humanitarian and development aid, and implemented by international aid agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with national quasi-governmental bodies and national and local NGOs. Other local stakeholders (national and local governance authorities in the north and south of the country, and community members and beneficiaries) are also involved. This Yemen study feeds into broader BASIC Research work on the resilience of social protection systems in crises. We draw on the inception review by Slater, Haruna and Baur (2022) to frame our understanding of capacity along three interlinked dimensions: institutional, organisational and individual capacities. We found a small published literature on capacities for social assistance in Yemen (mainly donor and aid agency strategic and programme documents and some independent analysis of aid effectiveness). In this report, we summarise the political economy of international support in Yemen (Section 2). We map the social assistance landscape (Section 3), as well as the capacities of key national actors (Section 4) and international actors (Section 5 and Annexe). Section 5 sets out some preliminary conclusions.

Oviedo, Daniel, Daniel Perez Jaramillo, and Mariajosé Nieto. Governance and Regulation of Ride-hailing Services in Emerging Markets: Challenges, Experiences and Implications. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003579.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper seeks to shed some light on the different considerations for regulation and governance of ride-hailing platforms in emerging markets, highlighting their positive and negative externalities. Building on an extensive review of the literature and secondary sources, we outline Ride-hailing's identified and potential effects on users (providers and consumers), incumbents, and society. Based on the welfare impacts structure, we identify the significant challenges that regulators face in understanding, monitoring, evaluating, and regulating this type of transportation innovation. Finally, the paper proposes a framework for approaching such mobility innovations from governance and regulation perspectives. In a context of exponential growth in research and innovation in urban mobility in general and Ride-hailing, a rigorous review of the literature and a critical framework for understanding governance and regulation in such services in rapidly changing contexts is a timely contribution.
