Is our beleive that the democracy does not exist without the media, turning on a a midocracy. The text begins with the sociology of communication, with the support of political economy, and broad focus in studies of political communication, looking on how communication impacts on policy. It also put focus on political parties, candidates and their electoral activities, and the impact that media coverage brings to its processes. For this, the text is organized in five chapters, which set out to observe the current status of communication and the role of information in contemporary democracies. The relationships that the media system and political setting, the characteristics of the media and the current state of media coverage, and the construction and characterization of mediacracy will be covered. To fullfil this goals, we selected a sample of magazines, publications that are within the media realm, to observe and analyze the relationship between media and politics in contemporary societies. A period that includes election and non-electoral periods was selected, and using the knowledge of the depht-hermeneutics combined with content and discourse analises, we present some analized data that demonstrates how the relations between these fields happens. Thus we allow ourselves to reflect on this complex and visible balance of power to build our concept of mediacracy.
Abstract:
Current energy challenges are multidimentional in nature as they blend together the economic, social, and environmental fields. They are also global, interconnected and transversal. Energy challenges are apprehended globally by international law, despite some shortcomings. Those shortcomings stem from the strategic nature of energy challenges and their simultaneous dependance on sovereignty. They also come to light in the context of environmental risks and risks of harm to humans. Yet, those shortcomings do not deprive international law of its capacity to adapt to energy challenges. It shows adaptation by taking into account their transversal character and the correlated necessity for solidarity. The inclusive and new finality of pursuing universal access to sustainable energy and the efforts shown toward energy democracy yet reinforce this adaptability. Thus, international law exibits all the tools necessary to help, and also be an engine for the energy transition

Saxton, Gregory W. "PERCEPTIONS OF FAIRNESS AND POLITICAL SUPPORT IN THE FACE OF ECONOMIC INEQUALITY." UKnowledge, 2019. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/polysci_etds/28.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I investigate two key questions: 1) What are the specific conditions under which economic inequality undermines democratic legitimacy; and 2) How does inequality map onto individuals’ perceptions of fairness and subsequently affect satisfaction with democracy and trust in political institutions? I first argue that individuals’ perceptions of distributive unfairness are key factors whereby economic inequality undermines democratic legitimacy. Inequality - and subsequent perceptions that the economic distribution is unfair - undermine political support by signaling that the democratic process is not functioning properly and by challenging people’s normative expectations about what democracy should do in practice. I next draw from a diverse literature on social and political psychology, as well as governance quality, to derive new hypotheses about how people form their fairness judgments and use them to evaluate democracy. Right-leaning and upper-class individuals should be less upset with inequality in the first place, but even when these individuals perceive distributive unfairness, they should be less likely to express political dissatisfaction as a result. Additionally, the context in which individuals form their fairness perceptions should condition the relationship between fairness judgments and political support. In a context of good governance, individuals should be less likely to perceive inequality as unfair, and subsequently less likely to express political dissatisfaction for any perceived distributive unfairness in society. Governance quality provides alternative evidence that democracy is in fact functioning properly and should allay citizens’ concerns about inequality and distributive unfairness, at least when it comes to evaluating democratic legitimacy. To test my theory and hypotheses, I take a mixed-methods approach that combines large-N analysis of public opinion data and original survey experiments. To contextualize my quantitative results, I draw on motivating examples from original open-ended surveys, newspapers, and elite interviews. In the first empirical chapter, I conduct a multilevel analysis of data from 18 Latin American and show that perceptions of distributive unfairness are negatively correlated with trust in government and satisfaction with democracy, yet good governance significantly mitigates this negative relationship. In the second empirical chapter, I use original survey experiments in Argentina, Mexico, and the US to show that perceptions of distributive unfairness are key causal factors linking inequality to political dissatisfaction. In the third empirical chapter, I use a second set of survey experiments to investigate how governance quality moderates the relationship between inequality and political support. When individuals are presented with information about declining corruption, they are less likely to perceive their country’s income distribution as unfair, and less likely to link inequality to political dissatisfaction.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2013-09-30
This dissertation examines the existence and intensity of influence of the access to information using the Internet by a society, through bloggers, online forums, emails, websites, and other forms of new media of communication, in the levels of democracy experienced by this society. With this purpose, we analyze the theoretical approaches on recent developments and concepts of democracy, characterized by waves. We also provide a specific literature review, based on empirical research developed by centers and universities worldwide and publicly available, related to the measurement of the effect of the Internet and other media, as well as social and economic indicators. Finally, we report in detail facts considered as signs about the importance of access to this revolutionary means of communication, especially addressing the popular movements in the world's most prominent that occurred between 2008 and 2013. There seems to be strong evidence that, by providing a source for the population dynamics of communication and access to basic public services, through current experiences, the Internet plays a key role in promoting democracy. However, it is important to argue that the population needs to a better organization not only in the virtual world, but in the real world in order to make their goals become concrete, real and durable. Otherwise, mankind can only be experiencing a new ephemeral, temporary and not ideology based democratic wave. Keywords: Media. Social indicators. Internet. Civil liberty. Political rights. Democratic waves.
Indicadores sociais. Internet. Liberdade civil. Direitos políticos. Ondas democráticas.

Abstract:
The Economic Community of West-African States is a sub-regional organization that was created in 1975, initially with a purely economic purpose. Since its inception, the organization has observed a clear principle of non-interference in its member-states” internal affairs. But since then, the recrudescence of coups that affected political stability in various member-states and economic development for the sub-region, have led the organization to operate a change in its doctrine and missions. Indifferent to the political regimes of its member-states, and their effect on Human rights protection, ECOWAS has been increasingly involved in conflict prevention and anti- constitutional changes in power. For ECOWAS, coups fall under its mission to promote and preserve sub-regional collective security. Since the 1993 revision of the Lagos Treaty that saw its creation, ECOWAS pays close attention to the inner working of its member-states” institutions, the legality and constitutionality of power transfers as well as the protection of Human rights. This dissertation deals with the instruments developed by the sub-regional organization to prevent and counter anti- constitutional power transfers. It pays attention to the progresses made as well the tools missing from ECOWAS’ legal arsenal. At last, this dissertation offers a set of proposals designed to improve the organization’s capacity to prevent and respond to coups threatening its member- states political stability and the region’s security

Fauvel, Guillaume. Electronic Thesis or Diss., Rennes 1, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022REN1G001.

Full text
Abstract:
Transhumanism promotes a model of humanity that is entirely subject to the sole techno-scientific power that is itself oriented by neoliberal ideology. The figure of the "augmented man" or "posthuman" is constituted on the reduction of the human to what in its condition is the most "governable", the most docile, the easiest to direct and to adapt to the requirements of efficiency and economic performativity. Transhumanism thus becomes the support for the creation and conditioning of a new subjectivity willing to let itself be led according to the demands of a market society. The "posthuman" would allow to reach the ultimate objective of a total depoliticization of the individuals and the society to the profit of an integral economization of the individuals and the society. Taken in this transhumanist soteriology, the humanity of the men does not appear any more like an enigma, like what the men can “let understand of their humanity” when they are free to question perpetually the sense of it which refers to an indefinable Idea and thus essentially enigmatic [Robert Legros]. By mobilizing the tools of Critical Theory, political philosophy, theories of democracy and the history of political ideas, the stake of this thesis lies in the analysis of the transhumanist movement in the light of a domination of the neoliberal ideology which hides the fact that the utopia of a posthumanity is only the ideological illusion of a democracy which will have definitively exhausted its utopian energy at the same time as it will have ceased to maintain the enigma of the humanity of the men as the political source of a true emancipation

Tais temas abordam, primordialmente, as questões comerciais e as institucionais. __________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This dissertation, entitled "Mercosul: the rhetoric of Brazilian foreign policy in relation to the principle of legal security and the principle of democracy (2002-2012)," aims to examine the decisions within Brazil's foreign policy that violate the legal framework of Mercosul. The tone of regional foreign policy speeches determines which topics stand out in the process of consolidating Mercosul as a successful customs union. These subjects relate primarily to commercial issues and to matters of the bloc's institutions. They have been analyzed with regard to the principle of legal security and the principle of democracy. Case studies on the temporary suspension of Paraguay from Mercosul, the accession of Venezuela to the bloc, and the Brazilian Retreaded Tires Case corroborate this paper's thesis that recent decisions in Brazilian foreign policy have generated legal insecurity within Mercosul.

Abstract:
Nowadays in the society, the media are essential and very important for the activities of people. The 1955 system, where domination by one party of Parliament ( the LDP ) continued without interruption for 38 years, was created by the unique conditions of politics in Japan. However, later, the media contributed greatly to the fall of this strong political system with long duration. Now the media have a tendency to exert a great influence on politics. On the other hand, the authorities began to take measures to control the media in favor of their policy, which is interference in the media and made considerable pressure on their expression activities. Under the situation where media freedom is limited, the people, however, reacted against the authorities with new means and the relationship between media and politics is becoming more serious for us today

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation is embedded in the debate on the relations of participation and representation within the institutional arrangements aimed at broadening citizenship participation. It's main aim is of verifying whether the decision-making process inaugurated by Participatory Budgeting is beyond the scope of the theoretical foundations of canonical contemporary democratic theory. To facilitate this analysis it was necessary to identify the elements that make up the decision process of participatory budgeting and compare them with the state of the art of democratic theory, having as the principal reference the theory of polyarchic democracy developed by Robert Dahl. As empirical element were studied the experiences of Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte. It was found that participatory budgeting can be legitimized by the theoretical foundations of representative democracy and that this institutional arrangement exemplifies the interdependence present in the relationship between participation and representation, fulcrum of contemporary democracy. It was evident, too, the importance of political participation of citizens, especially at subnational levels of government to enhance democracy at the present time due to the expansion of the size of democratic regimes. However, participation ensured by experiences as participatory budgeting is limited by an institutional representative entered into the system. In this sense, citizens who participate in these decisory spaces play the role of representatives in an analogous way to that of political party representation, but play this role as a mechanism to enable a decision-making process toward the expansion of political participation and democratization of public management.

Abstract:
Between the conference of The Hague (1965) and the signing of the Single European Act (1986), the European Construction was foremost an economic endeavour aiming at integrating the European societies and based on the free movement of goods, people, services and money. The creation of the common market was an extraordinary challenge for the nation states and for the political parties which are responsible for the expression of the political life of their nation. Two parties, the French socialist party (PS) and the social-democratic party of Germany (SPD), both deeply rooted in the political life of their own nation, with a socialist and democratic identity, but also moved by European ideals, were greatly involved in the realisation of the European project, mainly through the action of their leaders when these were exercising their national responsibilities and ruling their nation. Thus the questioning: did these parties leave the mark of democratic socialism on the European construction or did they only accompany it without correcting the original features? Did they participate in the definition of the European economic model or not? And in turn, did the European construction lead them to preserve or to modify their identity? Our inquiry leads us to study how two utopian ideas, the path towards democratic socialism and the path towards European unity, interfere. The extreme difficulty for both parties to create a convergence between these two paths could prevent them from remaining political strengths with great future at national and European scale

Abstract:
This thesis presents techniques for detecting and recognizing faces under various imaging conditions. In particular, it presents a system that combines several methods for face detection and recognition. Initially, the faces in the images are located using the Viola-Jones method and each detected face is represented by a subimage. Then, an eye and mouth detection method is used to identify the coordinates of the eyes and mouth, which are then used to update the subimages so that the subimages contain only the face area. After that, a method based on Bayesian estimation and a fuzzy membership function is used to identify the actual faces on both subimages (obtained from the first and second steps). Then, a face similarity measure is used to locate the oval shape of a face in both subimages. The similarity measures between the two faces are compared and the one with the highest value is selected. In the recognition task, the Trace transform method is used to extract the face signatures from the oval shape face. These signatures are evaluated using the BANCA and FERET databases in authentication tasks. Here, the signatures with discriminating ability are selected and were used to construct a classifier. However, the classifier was shown to be a weak classifier. This problem is tackled by constructing a boosted assembly of classifiers developed by a Gentle Adaboost algorithm. The proposed methodologies are evaluated using a family album database.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As a consequence of the Cold War, the second half of the twentieth century brought to Latin America, in opposition to the popular struggles for emancipation, civil-military dictatorships which perpetrated serious Human Rights violations against the population who should be under the protection of the States. In response to this, both peaceful resistance movements as well as armed ones erupted across the continent. One of the most iconic episodes of resistance in Brazil was the Guerrilha do Araguaia, which involved 86 individuals at its best moment – almost all of them college students who saw armed resistance as the only way to overthrow the dictatorship. The Army’s reaction came soon after and, of the 86 who joined the guerrilla, 70 were victims of enforced disappearance. In 2010, the Brazilian State was held responsible for these disappearances before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which demanded the State to locate those who were still missing and to punish those responsible for the violations, among other measures to be taken. One year after the sentence was issued, Brazil handed in its Compliance Report, which is the object of study of the present work under the theoretical framework of Transitional Justice.

Abstract:
A metodologia utilizada teve caráter etnográfico.

The aim of this project is to evaluate whether the e-learning material, that has been converted from face-to-face course material to e-learning materialon the basis of the revised version of Bloom's taxonomy and learning strategies, is pedagogical in the sense that the students realize the categories of the three domains of learning in Bloom's taxonomy. To achieve the aim of this project a face-to-face course will be converted to an e-learning course; that will then be evaluated. The results show thatthe e-learning material is pedagogical in the sense that the students realize the categories of the three domains of learning in Bloom's taxonomy, and the discussion indicates that the material is pedagogical to a certain extent. That is, some categories and aspect of the three domains of learning appear to have been realized, for example remembering, understanding, practicing, and adapting. The report includes a discussion on positive and negative aspects concerning attention, motivation, imitating, etc.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an ethnography of the research interview. It presents an analysis of interviewer-interviewee interaction unencumbered by the methodological and practical concerns of research interviewers, for collecting reliable or valid data. The thesis argues that positivist and interactionist descriptions of the research interview, that are tied to interactional procedures for saving the referential quality of interview talk - by maximising or minimising respondent interviewer interaction - under-theorise the interaction they describe. Thus this thesis suspends any concern with the referential quality of interview data and draws upon a particular reading of the work of Goffman to analyse how participants accomplish a research interview as an intelligible interactional reality organised from within and how participants honour and accommodate each other as ritual selves in the primary roles of interviewee and interviewer. The thesis reviews positivist and interactionist descriptions of the research interview; makes the case for a Goffman style ritual analysis and presents an empirical analysis of qualitative interview talk.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is on facial biometrics; specifically in the problems of face detection and face recognition. Despite intensive research over the last 20 years, the technology is not foolproof, which is why we do not see use of face recognition systems in critical sectors such as banking. In this thesis, we focus on three sub-problems in these two areas of research. Firstly, we propose methods to improve the speed-accuracy trade-off of the state-of-the-art face detector. Secondly, we consider a problem that is often ignored in the literature: to decrease the training time of the detectors. We propose two techniques to this end. Thirdly, we present a detailed large-scale study on self-updating face recognition systems in an attempt to answer if continuously changing facial appearance can be learnt automatically.

Abstract:

The question is regularly posed within communication academia as to whether computer mediated communication (CMC) is a "richer" form of communication than face-to-face (FtF). Similarly, the necessity of meeting FtF with regard to business has been repeatedly called into question since the downturn of the economy in 2008-2009. One reason professionals gather FtF is for tradeshows.

This thesis looks at the quality of the communication that takes place at FtF tradeshows, and reveals attitudes and opinions with regard to the importance of the relationship-building and commerce that occurs in person and/or online. The results inform what we can and cannot accomplish in these different environments.

331 professionals who have worked in tradeshows as a planner, an exhibitor, an attendee, or an executive took an online survey designed to reveal how they felt about the relationship-building and commerce that occurs in the tradeshow environment. The questions were focused on whether FtF, CMC, or a combination of the two is the solution, exploring the value and necessity of tradeshows. Additionally, an autoethnography highlights some personal experiences, having served within each of the professional roles with regard to tradeshows.

The results showed the respondents felt that CMC is not a replacement for the FtF communication that occurs at tradeshows, but it is a useful supplement to the FtF experience. The autoethnography echoed these sentiments, in addition to echoing the short answers of many of the respondents.

Abstract:
Face Recognition has been a long-standing topic in computer vision and pattern recognition field because of its wide and important applications in our daily lives such as surveillance system, access control, and so on. The current modern face recognition model, which keeps only a couple of images per person in the database, can now recognize a face with high accuracy. Moreover, the model does not need to be retrained every time a new person is added to the database. By using the face dataset from Digital Democracy, the thesis will explore the capability of this model by comparing it with the standard convolutional neural network based on pose variations and training set sizes. First, we compare different types of pose to see their effect on the accuracy of the algorithm. Second, we train the system using different number of training images per person to see how many training samples are actually needed to maintain a reasonable accuracy. Finally, to push the limit, we decide to train the model using only a single image per person with the help of a face generation technique to synthesize more faces. The performance obtained by this integration is found to be competitive with the previous results, which are trained on multiple images.

Abstract:
This study examined advice interactions following infidelity. Participants (N = 213) completed a survey concerning an instance on infidelity and a subsequent advice interaction. Injured party perceptions of advice interactions were measured by examining advice messages, perceived face threat, and perceived face support, in addition to perceived effectiveness of the advice message. Results from this study showed no significant differences in perceived face threat, perceived face support, or advice effectiveness between different advice messages. Results also indicated both positive and negative face threat as negative predictors of advice effectiveness. While negative face support was a positive predictor of advice effectiveness, positive face support was a negative predictor. When controlling for relational closeness, negative face support was the only significant predictor of advice effectiveness.

We conduct experiments in which service providers manipulate their facial expressions while interacting with customers in one of three conditions: In the neutral condition the banker tried to maintain a neutral facial expression; in the smiling condition the banker tried to smile throughout the interaction; in the empathetic condition the banker tried to respond with the same or complementary facial expressions. Results show that the customers (n=46) were more satisfied with the interaction when they perceived the service provider was empathetic. More significantly, the service provider and customer shared synchronized facial expressions with many prolonged smiles, when customers said the service provider was empathetic. We suggested three different criteria to investigate customer satisfaction as follows; according to what the service provider tried to convey, what the customer perceived and what was actually detected in their interactions. According to the analysis of the interactions, smiling bankers who shared smiles were evaluated as the best while smiling bankers who did not share smiles with customers were appraised similar to non-smiling bankers.
by Kyunghee Kim.
S.M.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a method to reconstruct a frontal facial video basedon encoding done with the facial profile of another video sequence. The reconstructed facial video will have the similar facial expressionchanges as the changes in the profile video. First, the profiles for boththe reference video and for the test video are captured by edge detection. Then, asymmetrical principal component analysis is used to model thecorrespondence between the profile and the frontal face. This allows en-coding from a profile and decoding of the frontal face of another video.Another solution is to use dynamic time warping to match the profilesand select the best matching corresponding frontal face frame for re-construction. With this method, we can reconstructed the test frontalvideo to make it have the similar changing in facial expressions as thereference video. To improve the quality of the result video, Local Lin-ear Embedding is used to give the result video a smoother transitionbetween frames.

Bluemink, J. (Johanna). "Virtually face to face: enriching collaborative learning through multiplayer games." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2011. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514294235.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This study focused on enriching collaborative learning through pedagogically scripted multiplayer games. Collaborative learning was examined in the synchronous discussions of small group problem-solving activities in face-to-face and virtual game settings. The theoretical approach is socio-cognitive and builds on the contextual and situated nature of learning. Interaction between group members in social situations is a key mechanism fostering students’ collaborative learning. In the field of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning the underlying aim is to stimulate and structure socially shared construction of knowledge and development of shared understanding among the collaborators. This thesis consisted of three empirical studies. The first study focused on analysing the macro-level elements of teacher education students’ face-to-face discussions in a context of an international web-based course. The focus of the second and third empirical studies was on how distributed collaboration can be enriched by scripting multiplayer game environments. The game environments were developed and tailored as part of the empirical studies. The main aim was to analyse small-group micro-level interactions and activities taking place during the game. Moreover, the particulars of a 3D voice-enhanced multiplayer game context for small-group shared collaborative activities were investigated. The focus of the last empirical study was on aspects of collaborative game activity and shared problem solving described from the perspective of individual players. The results indicated that the synchronous small-group discussions, on the macro-level, consisted of explaining, sharing knowledge, providing critiques, reflection, and joint engagement. The micro-level elements of the players’ discussions during the game were questions, content statements, social statements, suggestions, instructions or orders, encouragements, and responses. Both macro and micro level elements varied in random order during the discussion, forming a base for small-group discussion and joint problem-solving efforts. Not all problem-solving situations in the game data were shared, indicating that if shared collaborative activity was pursued, the scripting of the game tasks must require equal participation and teamwork during the game. The 3D game environment created a strong shared context for the distributed groups by engaging the players and reinforcing individual participation through the avatar activity. The findings of this thesis contribute to the future development of serious games and highlight the potential of multiplayer games as tools for supporting the social aspects of distributed teamwork
Kaikki ongelmanratkaisutilanteet pelin aikana eivät kuitenkaan olleet jaettuja.

Abstract:
Decades of research on human happiness points to one central conclusion: Engaging in positive social interactions is critical for well-being. The current smartphone revolution, however, may be altering how and when we derive these benefits. Using a field experiment and experience sampling, we found the first evidence that phone use may undermine the enjoyment people derive from real world social interactions. In Study 1, we recruited over 300 community members and students to share a meal at a restaurant with friends or family. Participants were randomly assigned to keep their phones on the table or to put their phones away during the meal. When phones were present (vs. absent), participants felt more distracted, which reduced how much they enjoyed spending time with their friends/family. We found consistent results using experience sampling in Study 2; during in-person interactions, participants felt more distracted and reported lower enjoyment if they used their phones than if they did not. This research suggests that despite their ability to connect us to others across the globe, phones may undermine the benefits we derive from interacting with those across the table.
Arts, Faculty of
Psychology, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2010.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 133-143).
Exposure to new ideas and opinions, and their diffusion within social networks, are important questions in education, business, and government. However until recently there has been no method to automatically capture fine-grained face-to-face interactions between people, to better model the diffusion process. In this thesis, we describe the use of colocation and communication sensors in 'socially aware' mobile phones to model the spread of opinions and behaviors of 78 residents of an undergraduate residence hall for an entire academic year, based on over 320,000 hours of behavior data. Political scientists (Huckfeldt and Sprague, APSR, 1983) have noted the problem of mutual causation between face-to-face networks and political opinions. During the last three months of the 2008 US presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain, we find that political discussants have characteristic interaction patterns that can be used to recover the self-reported 'political discussant' ties within the community. Automatically measured mobile phone features allow us to estimate exposure to different types of opinions in this community. We propose a measure of 'dynamic homophily' which reveals surprising short-term, population-wide behavior changes around external political events such as election debates and Election Day. To our knowledge, this is the first time such dynamic homophily effects have been measured. We find that social exposure to peers in the network predicts individual future opinions (R 2 ~ 0.8, p < 0.001). The use of mobile phone based dynamic exposure increases the explained variance for future political opinions by up to 30%. It is well known that face-to-face networks are the main vehicle for airborne contagious diseases (Elliott, Spatial Epidemiology, 2000). However, epidemiologists have not had access to tools to quantitatively measure the likelihood of contagion, as a function of contact/exposure with infected individuals, in realistic scenarios (Musher, NEJM, 2003), since it requires data about both symptoms and social interactions between individuals. We use of co-location and communication sensors to understand the role of face-to-face interactions in the contagion process. We find that there are characteristic changes in behavior when individuals become sick, reflected in features like total communication, temporal structure in communication (e.g., late nights and weekends), interaction diversity, and movement entropy (both within and outside the university). These behavior variations can be used to infer the likelihood of an individual being symptomatic, based on their network interactions alone, without the use of health-reports. We use a recently-developed signal processing approach (Nolte, Nature, 2008) to better understand the temporal information flux between physical symptoms (i.e., common colds, influenza), measured behavior variations and mental health symptoms (i.e., stress and early depression). Longitudinal studies indicate that health-related behaviors from obesity (Christakis and Fowler, 2007) to happiness (Fowler and Christakis, 2008) may spread through social ties. The effects of social networks and social support on physical health are well-documented (Berkman, 1994; Marmot and Wilkinson, 2006). However, these studies do not quantify actual face-to-face interactions that lead to the adoption of health-related behaviors. We study the variations in BMI, weight (in lbs), unhealthy eating habits, diet and exercise, and find that social exposure measured using mobile phones is a better predictor of BMI change over a semester, than self-report data, in stark contrast to previous work. From a smaller pilot study of social exposure in face-to-face networks and the propagation of viral music, we find that phone communication and location features predict the sharing of music between people, and also identify social ties that are 'close friends' or 'casual acquaintances'. These interaction and music sharing features can be used to model latent influences between participants in the music sharing process.
by Anmol Madan.
Ph.D.

Montpellier 1, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000MON10067.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This study will lecture on the topic of attitudes towards democracy in Cape Verde and Mozambique in a comparative perspective.
