Abstract:
ADOLESCENT ACTIVITY VS PASSIVITY ON SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES AND ITS RELATIONS WITH LONELINESS AND PERSONALITY TRAITSBirutė Pociūtė, Erika KrancaitėSummaryWith the growing popularity of Internet communication among adolescents, the Internet has become an important social context of their development. Recent data have revealed that there are already are over 1 million Facebook users in Lithuania; one-fifth of Facebook users consists of adolescents 13–17 years old. Investigators have assumed that one of the main reasons encouraging individuals to use social network websites is to facilitate psychosocial problems such as loneliness. Scientists are discussing the Internet possibilities to extend the limits of real communication or to take its place. The aim of this investigation was to reveal the features of adolescents’ use of the social networking website Facebook and its relations with loneliness and personality traits. The study included 175 adolescents, age 13 to 18 years (M = 15.4; SD = 1.102). They filled in a questionnaire on the use of social website Facebook, UCLA loneliness scale (version 3; Russell, 1996), the personality traits questionnaire NEO-FFI (Costa and McCrae, 1992).The results show that 81.1% of teens are users of the social network site Facebook and spend very much time on Facebook, publishing a lot of personal information in the web profiles without paying due attention to privacy preservation. On the website, adolescents accumulate large amounts of “friends”, although relationship transfer from the reality to the Internet prevails. The study revealed two main activity types: socially proactive and socially passive. The results also show that the personality traits have an impact on teenagers’ behaviour on Facebook: neurotic teenagers’ activity on Facebook is socially passive; extraverted adolescents support the social enhance attitude, but they are not enough to communicate online and tend to actually meet people that first were met on Facebook. Teenagers with a highly expressed consciousness, in general, are not active Facebook users, and do not try to compensate their loneliness by using the social network website Facebook. Very lonely teenagers show a socially passive activity, or a passive activity dominates, or in combination with a social activity. At the time, loneliness decreases, depending on how much time per day adolescents use the Facebook website.Key words: Social Network Site Facebook; personality traits; loneliness; activity on social Network Site.

Abstract:
The rise in social media usage has revolutionized information dynamics, transforming traditional communication into a multidirectional, interactive process. This study explores the impact of Facebook adoption on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) performance, addressing a notable gap in the Ugandan context. A quantitative survey involving 120 SMEs employed a comprehensive questionnaire validated for content and reliability. Existing literature suggests that Facebook positively influences SME performance, more so in areas like cost-effective marketing and customer engagement. Results highlight a moderate to high levels of Facebook adoption among SMEs. Correlation analysis reveals positive associations between Facebook adoption and SME performance. Regression analysis further signifies Facebook's significant impact ( =0.142, P<0.0003), particularly through customer engagement (B=0.263, p<0.029). The study points out the unique relationship between Facebook adoption and SME performance and thus recommend businesses to strategically engage with customers on this platform. While the model explains a part of SME performance, areas for future research to explore additional influencing factors are recommended.

Abstract:
This study aimed to analyze Facebook's use as a pedagogical tool for teaching didactics for graduate students in Dentistry. Seventy-two adult students participated in this study. These students attended theoretical classes, developed practical activities by Facebook, and evaluated the course through a questionnaire. Tasks were analyzed concerning the following criteria: time to respond to assignments and whether they have been finished or not. Additionally, post type and students' reactions to posts were also evaluated. Forty-three (59.8%) students have considered Facebook as a good pedagogical resource. Only 5 (22%) students answered that they had some difficulty in responding to the assignments of the course through Facebook. Most students completed their tasks through Facebook. However, in general, most students only fulfilled the assignments close to the deadline. The main reactions of the students were likes and comments. Despite its limitations, Facebook seems to be a great pedagogical resource to be inserted in post-graduate education. In addition, the students still show little participation even being in the virtual environment of Facebook.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractHigher education institutions are increasingly implementing peer tutoring and peer mentoring strategies to support newly enrolled students’ transition into university, aiming to reduce drop-out and improve persistence. However, it is rare that these are directly compared, and even rarer for effects on social and academic integration and institutional attachment to be explored, as in this study. In this quantitative and qualitative study, a total of 446 first-year university students of Psychology and Education Sciences in one university, recruited via a snowball technique which relied heavily on email and text messages, followed-up with invitations to a Facebook group, completed an online questionnaire. The questionnaire incorporated three instruments of known reliability: the Social Adjustment, Academic Adjustment and Institutional Attachment subscales of the Adaptation to College Questionnaire; the Commitment subscale of the Revised Academic Hardiness Scale; and the Commitment Attitude Scale. Results were analysed by independent t-tests. For the qualitative semi-structured interviews participants were 39 self-selected but stratified volunteers. Interviews focused on the three stages of Appreciative Inquiry: Discovery, Dream and Design. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. A combined inductive-deductive content-analysis technique and a thematic analysis technique was then used via MAXQDA 11. Peer mentoring was the most effective means to enhance social integration. However, peer tutoring showed a significant effect on academic integration. Neither had much impact on institutional attachment. Participants particularly mentioned that activities such as speed dating and mentoring days were important, since they developed self-esteem, which encouraged them to further participate. The availability of peer support over the longer term was seen as important. Evidence-based action implications for educational practice, policy-making and future researchers were outlined, and the importance of listening to students when developing institutional policy is emphasized.

Abstract:
Today, the number of cities involved in the road tests of different autonomous vehicles is dynamically increasing. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly important to understand people’s opinions about autonomous urban mobility. Although several social science studies address the acceptance of autonomous vehicles, most of the studies apply questionnaire methods. Furthermore, scarce information is available about how people formulate their opinion if there is no research framework, and they form their opinion spontaneously, especially in countries where the road test of autonomous vehicles is less common. The main aim of the present study is to find out the free and spontaneous opinion of the Hungarian population regarding autonomous vehicles. The method is the analysis of Hungarian-language comments about autonomous vehicles on the most popular social media platforms (Facebook and YouTube): 1,690 comments of 10 posts in total are analyzed in the form of software-supported structured text and content analysis.

Abstract:
AbstractFrom a simple channel through which people can communicate at a distance, the Internet has been transformed, evolved and slowly started to dominate different aspects of their lives. In this regard, people in general, and students and universities in particular, began using online platforms for different purposes. The aim of our paper is to examine students’ perception regarding the informal online platforms used in the name of Transilvania University of Brasov, in order to identify the way in which such platforms can influence the collaboration between students and the university. Students’ perception about the Facebook page entitled “Unitbv Crush” -a page created with the purpose of helping students interact and date with each other- were analyzed. A mixed method approach included interviews with 15 top fan students based on the Facebook algorithm of the same university as part of a pilot study and a questionnaire that was applied to 848 students. Results of the research showed that most students thought that the page was created with the purpose of posting fun content and of dating, and that they did not agree with the idea that the page should be administrated by the university. Therefore, the page managed to improve the collaboration between students, but by showing that students did not want for the page to be administrated by the university, the page has little to no influence on improving collaboration between the institution and its students. Universities could benefit from the results of this research, in the case in which they would like to take control over the Crush pages created by students.

Abstract:
AbstractThe democratization of travel and tourism has led to increased competition among tourist destinations, bringing the importance of destination image to the forefront. At the same time, the expansion of social media made it possible for visitors and stakeholders to collaborate on the creation of the destination image. Thus, both cognitive and affective destination image can be observed in social media and can be found in posts that users upload either in groups dedicated to a specific destination or in posts that use the name of the destination as a hashtag. This study adopts a mixed method approach in order to reveal features of the cognitive and affective perceived destination image and compare them with the projected image. The city of Pafos was chosen as a case study and all the Instagram posts using the hashtags #visitPaphos and #visitPafos (7861 in total) have been collected and analyzed. At the same time, a questionnaire designed and answered by a sample of 108 respondents who are members of Facebook groups acting as forums for holidaymakers in Cyprus. This research attempts to provide practical implications for destination managers and stakeholders to prepare and build their future marketing strategies by gaining a deeper understanding of the impact shared content has on visitor perception.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research explores if wine consumers are aware of the wines of the Greek prefecture of Drama and, in particular, its wines with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), and if they have previously experienced them. It also investigates where do consumers search online for wine information, and which of the 17 directly related to wine terroir attributes they seek information for. Lastly, it explores if the male and female wine consumers have the same level of awareness and experience with these PGI wines, and if they seek the same terroir elements on the online information channels. An online questionnaire was used to collect 917 valid responses. The data analysis showed that all participants were aware of the wines of Drama Prefecture, and as for the PGI wines (PGI wines of Drama, Hadriani, and Agora), about one half of the sample knows the Drama PGI wines and 48% has had previous experience, 29% knows Hadriani PGI wines and 24.3% has previous experience, and 23.3% knows PGI Agora wines and 20.2% has previous experience with these wines. Main online information search channels are the winery’s website, Google + and Facebook. The terroir elements most searched for information is “area of wine production”, “grape varieties”, and “wine authenticity”. No gender differences were found in knowledge and previous experience with PGI wines of the prefecture of Drama, while for four out of 17 terroir elements that consumers were seeking information of in their online search, gender differences were observed: Place attachment, vineyard terrain, winery landscape architecture, and grape harvesting. Results are discussed and provide suggestions for terroir-based marketing. Results provide insight to consumer behaviour and may lead wineries to implement programs for wine tourism and education on wine terroir characteristics and wine choice connected to gastronomy.

The chapter examines Facebook usage among female undergraduate students of library and information science. Through a survey approach, the study drew on 154 female undergraduate Library and Information Science students from four universities. Questionnaire was used to gather data. Four research questions were developed and answered. The results revealed that the majority of the respondents (female undergraduates) use Facebook on a daily basis. Female undergraduates use Facebook to socialize, connect, and chat with friends, making it the highest purpose of using Facebook. While majority of female students use Facebook on a daily basis, the negative aspects of it were also revealed, including consumption of ones' precious time; the time they should use for other productive academic work is being channeled to Facebook, thereby making Facebook time consuming. Finally, erratic power supply was identified as the major problem of using Facebook by female LIS undergraduate students.

This chapter analyses how autonomy, collaboration, and cooperation are built in a class designed to use digital technologies for a teacher development syllabus. For the purpose of this chapter, data was collected using an empirical-qualitative approach through active observation in participative action, using a questionnaire and Moodle e-portfolio that addressed learning in several virtual tools including Facebook. The final analysis demonstrates that it is possible to understand the autonomous and collaborative teaching and learning process when online tools such as social networks are used, and it is also possible to determine students' participation through authorship. However, such acknowledgment requires that participants be prepared in terms of methodology, including teachers, and have the means to consider accepting new ways of teaching through the cooperation enabled by social networks and virtual learning environments.

Abstract:
The impact that Facebook and Twitter usage has on the creation and maintenance of university student’s cognitive social capital was investigated on students in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Facebook and Twitter were selected as part of the research context because both are popular online social network systems (SNSs), and few studies were found that investigated the impact that both Facebook and Twitter have on the cognitive social capital of South African university students. Data was collected from a survey questionnaire, which was successfully completed by over 100 students from all 5 universities within the Western Cape. The questionnaire was obtained from a previous study, allowing comparisons to be made. Analysis of the results however, did not show a strong relationship between the intensity of Facebook and Twitter usage, and the various forms of social capital. Facebook usage was found to correlate with student’s satisfaction with university life; which suggests that increasing the intensity of Facebook usage for students experiencing low satisfaction with university life might be beneficial. Abstract:
Sports pedagogy is a subject matter, which is taught in all sports sciences courses in all Italian Universities, which offer programs of this kind. Being this discipline entirely new in Italy, the impact of its teaching on students has been scarcely studied and explored by scholars. Also, the subject has never been innovated by adopting new teaching and learning models. Starting from this genesis, our study aims to reflect on the possibility of innovating the teaching of sports pedagogy through the technologies offered by Web. 2.0. In our research, we show that this innovative way of teaching sports pedagogy in the University can be found in social networks and Facebook when it is conceived of and used as an online learning environment capable of integrating all media and e-tools provided by Web 2.0. As evidence of this, in the second part of our paper, we will present a case study conducted in Italy at the University of Rome Foro Italico in which Facebook has been utilized as an online learning environment for teaching sports pedagogy in a blended modality and tutoring the students who couldn't attend the classes. After describing the scenario of the case study, we will show the results of a questionnaire administered to a group of sports sciences bachelor’s degree students involved in the case study. In conclusion, we will analyze and interpret the data from the questionnaire and answer the question whether Facebook as an integrated online learning environment and model can be, as it is, an innovative and useful tool to teach sports pedagogy or it needs a revision or adjustment to a better implementation.

Abstract:
In this article, I explore connections between internet use, a huge development in human civilization and its role in educating citizens. Internet is literally considered as a practical key or essential to human development and social advancement causing massive innovation in the world. Over the years, the advent of new media has permeated most aspects of our lives, especially that of the young generation. It is against this background that this paper aims to analyses the present use of the new media by youth to gauge their usage in relation to political participation. This study is a country wide survey covering resources posted on Facebook related Romanian military sites. Practically users are split into groups that accept more or less the politically correct ideas and sometimes accept or fierce reject some kinds of historiography. Besides a survey research using questionnaire as instrument was used to obtain data paper take its data from of samples of content and information's publicly posted on this social engine. The data was analyzed descriptively and inferentially using SPSS 20.0 From the results, majority of the respondents, 89% are social media users having a social media account. A discouraging trend with regard to participation is the very low level of giving comments on general societal issues ranging from social issues, the environment to politics. The youth are more inclined to using the new media for entertainment and finding resources for surface education on hot topics. Abstract:
Aims: Q-LAMP aims to identify risk factors and resilience factors for symptoms of psychiatric illness during the pandemic. Study strengths include the 1-year longitudinal design and the use of standardized instruments already available in English and Arabic. The results will increase understanding of the impact of the pandemic on mental health for better support of the population during the pandemic and in future epidemics. Until an effective vaccine is available or herd immunity is achieved, countries are likely to encounter repeated ‘waves’ of infection. The identification of at-risk groups for mental illness will inform the planning and delivery of individualized treatment including primary prevention. Methodology: Longitudinal online survey; SMS-based recruitment and social media platforms advertisements e.g. Facebook, Instagram; Online consent; Completion time for questionnaires: approx. 20 to 30 minute; Baseline questionnaire with follow up at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months; Study completion date: Sept. 2021. Inclusion criteria: Currently living in Qatar; Qatari residents: citizens and expatriates; Age 18 years; read Arabic or English (questionnaire and consent form available in both languages). Instruments: Sociodemographic questionnaire including personal and family experience of COVID-19 infection; Standard instruments to assess psychiatric morbidity including depression, anxiety and PTSD; research team-designed instruments to assess social impact of pandemic; standard questionnaires to assess resilience, personality, loneliness, religious beliefs and social networks. Results: The analysis was based on 181 observations. Approximately, 3.5% of the sample was from the sms-recruitment method. The sample of completed surveys consisted of 65.0% females and 35.0% males. Qatari respondents comprised 27.0% of the total sample, while 52% of the sample were married, 25% had Grade 12 or lower level of educational attainment, and 46.0% were unemployed. Covid-19 appears to have affected different aspects of people’s lives from personal health to living arrangements, employment, and health of family and friends. Approximately, 41% to 55% of those who responded to the survey perceived changes in their stress levels, mental health, and loneliness to be worse than before the pandemic. Additionally, the wide availability of information about the pandemic on the internet and social media was perceived as source of pandemic-related worries among members of the public. Conclusion: The continued provision of mental health service and educational campaigns about effective stress and mental health management is warranted.

Abstract:
The presence of social software and social media in higher education is subject to research and change of educational practice. The increasing use of Web 2.0 technology is well documented in the international literature, especially in relation to more interactive learning, shift to student-centered pedagogies and change of teachers' roles, and student engagement with the learning process. Recently, there seems to be a significant number of studies in which emphasis is moved from teaching to learning with technology, namely on students' expectations from technology use in their courses. In Romania, in spite of their acceptance in higher education teaching/learning process being still in the stage of early adoption, research in this area shows increasing preoccupation with studying their implementation and impact on teacher and student practice. For the past five years, the authors have built and implemented a wiki-based blended learning programme for teaching English for Academic Purposes for undergraduate students at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania. They have studied its impact in relation to the factors that influence the use of social software/social media for learning, with language and IT proficiency levels as predictors of active use. Next, learning behaviour patterns were targeted to document transition from traditional to a web-based learning paradigm. Findings showed that student and teacher roles changed during the process, with the former developing independent and collaborative skills and the latter offering support and guidance as a facilitator. However, the quantitative analysis performed on several cohorts indicated an uneven online presence and a relative reluctance to use the respective course-embedded technology. These results, together with class observations and interaction with students, as well as a growing attention paid to the influence of Facebook on students' behaviour, prompted the authors to investigate into similarities and differences between the current learning environment and Facebook in terms of potential for improving motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. The purpose of the present study is to build, pilot and validate (by using the validity-reliability method) a questionnaire aimed at exploring motivation, frequency and ease-of-use, and type of activities performed on two particular social media, namely a wiki and Facebook. Students' perception of the usefulness of extending the learning environment to Facebook will be also investigated. Brief interviews will complete the quantitative data and study data obtained with social network analysis. The findings are expected to highlight benefits and challenges of using social media for learning and point out ways to improve pedagogical design to allow for an enhanced student engagement and for the design of a future experiment for the in-depth study of student success.
