Abstract:
Facial synkinesis following severe facial palsy has been observed clinically across a wide range of patient groups, from infants to older adults, indicating that it is not limited to any specific demographic. In one of the largest studies on the natural progression of idiopathic peripheral facial nerve palsy, synkinesis was reported in approximately 16% to 55% of patients. The severity of facial synkinesis generally correlates with the severity of the initial facial palsy. Various types of nerve injuries have been categorized based on the extent of damage to the endoneurium, perineurium, and a

Abstract:
Blepharospasm (BS) is one of the diseases characterized exclusively by involuntary face movements (facial hyperkinesis). Typical clinical manifestations include squinting or increased blinking. Among frequent patients’ complains at the disease onset are unpleasant irritations, a foreign body sensation, itching, dry eyes, and frequent blinking. Dynamism is a typical BS feature: 1) it increases during emotional stress, in stressful situations, during fatigue, eye strain (reading), in bright light; 2) disappears while sleeping; 3) decreases after waking up; 4) «corrective gestures», such as touch

ABSTRACT Aims . Hyperkinetic seizures are usually associated with frontal lobe epilepsy. However, some patients have hyperkinetic seizures of temporal lobe origin. The semiological differences in hyperkinetic seizures between frontal and temporal lobe epilepsy have not been well studied. Here, we retrospectively assessed ictal semiology in order to distinguish between hyperkinetic seizures of frontal lobe origin and those of temporal lobe origin. Methods . We retrospectively reviewed data on patients who had undergone surgery for hyperkinetic seizures of temporal or frontal lobe origin and ach

A 67-year-old man visited the neurology clinic for new-onset, generalized, uncontrollable movements. His wife noticed onset of some unusual facial expressions and facial movements. This then evolved to him having some writhing movements of the left upper and left lower extremity. His speech and swallowing also became affected. He noted a tendency to bite his tongue, which was moving uncontrollably. Shortly before his neurology clinic visit, the same writhing movements of right-sided limbs developed. No cognitive or behavioral changes were reported. He had been diagnosed with cutaneous lupus er
