Abstract:
Shift work disorder (SWD), which is characterized by insomnia and excessive sleepiness related with shift work, is one of the most common health problems in shift workers. Shift work disorder causes insomnia, fatigue, worse work performance, an increased likelihood of accidents, and a poor quality of life. In addition, SWD is associated with decreased productivity and increased economic costs. The correct management of SWD is important to prevent sleep disturbances and maintain work performance in shift workers. To diagnose and evaluate SWD, it is necessary to take detailed medical histories, assess the severity of sleep disturbances, and evaluate shift workers’ sleep using a sleep diary and actigraphy. The work-fitness evaluation should include recommendations on how shift workers can reduce their sleep disturbances and increase work performance, as well as the assessment of work performance. This paper reviews previous research on the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of SWD and summarizes the work-fitness evaluation of SWD.

Abstract:

The purpose of this degree project is to study a work evaluation project in a municipality, on the basis of key participants. The municipality is the employer, per-forming the workplace project and the chief objective is to reach gender equality between the employees. Equal pay for equal work. Through work evaluation is it pos-sible to find out which of a lot of different jobs, which have equal requirements. The jobs, which have equal requirements, should have equal pay.

According to Swedish law, all employers need to analyse and survey their salary/wage distribution, to identify and remedy sexual discrimination concerning that area. One way to do that is to do a work evaluation and to study the result. Studying the result was what the municipality was doing, when got in contact with it. My focus is to find out what the central issues, problems and hinders are, or can occur when an employer is trying to follow the law.

This study is based on qualitative research. The empirical material (interviews and ob-servations) from key participants, who took part in the project in the municipality, is presented through excerpts. They speak about different problems and other aspects they have experienced during the work process with the result from the evaluation project. The material is then analysed in the light of different theories. The theories treat areas as gender and organisation.

For example is not al of the involved unions of the same opinion about the project. Money is one aspect that the key persons talk about and the circumstances around how to reach the goals of the project is another subject. The result of the study has shown that it could be useful within the project to have greater concern about the system of gender and to stronger point out the gains of ex-tended gender equality. Thou a lot of money are needed if equal pay for equal work should be reached, the gain in efficiency from the employed might compensate that.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the experience of work-life balance among ombudsmen within a trade union located in the midst of Sweden. The study was based on a qualitative method conducted through semi-structured interviews with 10 respondents. The results were analyzed by an inductive thematic analysis that generated three main themes; Personal circumstances, Flexible work arrangements and work load and The profession of ombudsmen. The result demonstrated that the majority of the respondents felt that they had a good experience of work-life balance. They argued that their working life and private life do not have a major impact on each other but stated that they on numerous occasions primarily had to prioritize commitments in their working life. The respondents expressed that their experience of work-life balance may periodically change due to workload and personal circumstances such as family situation and experience of the profession. They also argued that the flexible working arrangements along with the culture that characterize their profession have an impact on the experience of work-life balance.

Abstract:
The aim with this paper has been to explore how flexible work is perceived and handled by trade unions. The study's main focus has been the white-collar union Unionen, where four qualitative interviews were conducted and a number of official documents were reviewed. In addition to the interviews with Unionen two interviews were held with participant from Vision and Handelsanställdas förbund. Trade unions today face new challenges. These challenges involve questions that relate to how work today is organized and how members' attitude towards unions and their activities have changed. Flexible work is one such challenge. Flexible work as a phenomenon appears to be somewhat complex for Unionen. This complexity creates a situation where problems are expected to present themselves if no preventive efforts are made, while in reality there are relatively few actual errands for Unionen. Unionens work with flexibility is analysed from a legitimacy perspective in relation to Unionens environment. How Unionen works in relation to flexible work is also problematized in relation to the challenges of today’s unions where they are faced with decreasing number of members, individualization of society and new forms for organizing work.

Abstract:
Integrity verification is essential to safe planning of wells. Although the complexity of wells has increased over the last decades, the process of integrity verification has not seen any significant changes. In order to reduce the number of engineering hours spent planning new wells, the work process, and corresponding engineering software needs improvements to be compatible with today’s requirements. In this thesis, tubing stress analysis and casing wear simulations have been conducted for an <i>High-Pressure High-Temperature</i> (HPHT) well on the Norwegian continental shelf using the industry leading software tools. Both the work process and engineering software have been subject to investigations. The tubing sees excessive forces from high temperatures and high pressures in the well. In order to verify the integrity of the tubing, possible well scenarios are modelled in the Landmark WellCat software. As the production casing serves as a well barrier during production, it is of high importance that casing wear does not compromise the integrity of the casing. Petris DrillNET has been used to model wear from drilling operations on the casings. Improvements to the work process and engineering software are suggested in order to simplify the integrity modelling and reduce the engineering time spent on well planning. Based on the above mentioned work, the following points of improvement have been identified:- Implementation of standards and technical requirements in the engineering software. - Reduction of software input parameters through the establishment of a company specific database of parameters. - Need for improved communication between software models to reduce the iterative nature of well planning.

Lindheimer, Tomás Ernesto. "Safety Evaluation of Work Zone Practices in Utah." DigitalCommons@USU, 2010. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/871.

Full text
Abstract:
Work zones present a risk to drivers and to personnel constructing the roadway. In 2005 work zones accounted for 2.5% of fatalities nationwide, 3.5% for the state of Utah. The goal of this research is to make work zones safer by quantifying the risk that they present to drivers. The approach of this research has been to review part 6 of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and compare the differences from the 2003 and 2009 editions, conduct field studies of Utah work zones, and develop a tool for measuring risk in work zones. In the 2009 MUTCD an effort is made to provide additional safety measures to disabled pedestrians. Also, guidelines are set for the use of new technology for work zones, flagger procedures, and incident management. Research was done to ascertain what several states are doing to promote safety around work zones. The states that are highlighted in this report are Arkansas, North Carolina, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Minnesota, and Virginia. These methods include integration of a Smart Work Zone system, late lane merge, investigation of higher quality traffic control devices, and application of other technologies to make drivers aware of work zone conditions. Discussion about the various technologies available and their effects on traffic found through research is also provided in this thesis. Research for safety and safety regulations continues. An audit process developed at Utah State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology was used to conduct an evaluation of work zones in Utah. The audit was instrumental in evaluating the measures being used on highway and interstate roads work sites. The results and observations of this research were utilized to make standards concerning conditions of signs and delineation devices. Also observations were used to determine risk factors pertaining to a work zone. These factors were implemented in a spreadsheet that served as an analysis tool for quantification of risk in a work zone. Eleven projects in highways and arterials were audited and analyzed with the analysis tool developed. The risk scores attained from this tool range in value, and though the values may not be an exact value of the present risk, the tool still proved to be effective as an estimation device for auditors and contractors alike. The tool also proved efficient in quickly identifying the areas of concern in the work zone, and giving an estimate on the impact that improvements will have on the safety of workers and drivers. For the 11 work zones audited, the recommendations were enforcement of speed limit, improvement of signs in the work zone, and use of positive protection, among others.

Jackson, Meredith A. "Do Roundabouts Work? An Evaluation for Uniform Approach Demands." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/76831.

Full text
Abstract:
With the increased prevalence of roundabouts in the United States, there is a need to evaluate the performance of roundabouts relative to other intersection control strategies. Few studies have compared roundabouts with other intersection control strategies in a systematic fashion. Consequently, this Thesis compares four types of intersection control strategies considering a single lane approach with a 58 km/hr speed limit and equal demand on all approaches. The study demonstrates that vehicle delay is minimized with the use of a roundabout intersection control for all demand levels below 500 veh/hr/approach. Above this point if the left turn percentage exceeds 70% traffic signal control is more efficient. The roundabout alternative also produces the fewest vehicle stops for low demand levels, low left turn demand and high right turn demand, however a TWSC alternative produces the least number of vehicle stops when the through and total demand is high. This study illustrates that fuel consumption and carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions can be improved with roundabout control over other intersection control strategies. The research presented here demonstrates that for low traffic demand levels roundabouts should be part of design alternatives considered for isolated intersection control.
