Abstract:

The purpose of this degree project is to study a work evaluation project in a municipality, on the basis of key participants. The municipality is the employer, per-forming the workplace project and the chief objective is to reach gender equality between the employees. Equal pay for equal work. Through work evaluation is it pos-sible to find out which of a lot of different jobs, which have equal requirements. The jobs, which have equal requirements, should have equal pay.

According to Swedish law, all employers need to analyse and survey their salary/wage distribution, to identify and remedy sexual discrimination concerning that area. One way to do that is to do a work evaluation and to study the result. Studying the result was what the municipality was doing, when got in contact with it. My focus is to find out what the central issues, problems and hinders are, or can occur when an employer is trying to follow the law.

This study is based on qualitative research. The empirical material (interviews and ob-servations) from key participants, who took part in the project in the municipality, is presented through excerpts. They speak about different problems and other aspects they have experienced during the work process with the result from the evaluation project. The material is then analysed in the light of different theories. The theories treat areas as gender and organisation.

For example is not al of the involved unions of the same opinion about the project. Money is one aspect that the key persons talk about and the circumstances around how to reach the goals of the project is another subject. The result of the study has shown that it could be useful within the project to have greater concern about the system of gender and to stronger point out the gains of ex-tended gender equality. Thou a lot of money are needed if equal pay for equal work should be reached, the gain in efficiency from the employed might compensate that.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the experience of work-life balance among ombudsmen within a trade union located in the midst of Sweden. The study was based on a qualitative method conducted through semi-structured interviews with 10 respondents. The results were analyzed by an inductive thematic analysis that generated three main themes; Personal circumstances, Flexible work arrangements and work load and The profession of ombudsmen. The result demonstrated that the majority of the respondents felt that they had a good experience of work-life balance. They argued that their working life and private life do not have a major impact on each other but stated that they on numerous occasions primarily had to prioritize commitments in their working life. The respondents expressed that their experience of work-life balance may periodically change due to workload and personal circumstances such as family situation and experience of the profession. They also argued that the flexible working arrangements along with the culture that characterize their profession have an impact on the experience of work-life balance.

Abstract:
The aim with this paper has been to explore how flexible work is perceived and handled by trade unions. The study's main focus has been the white-collar union Unionen, where four qualitative interviews were conducted and a number of official documents were reviewed. In addition to the interviews with Unionen two interviews were held with participant from Vision and Handelsanställdas förbund. Trade unions today face new challenges. These challenges involve questions that relate to how work today is organized and how members' attitude towards unions and their activities have changed. Flexible work is one such challenge. Flexible work as a phenomenon appears to be somewhat complex for Unionen. This complexity creates a situation where problems are expected to present themselves if no preventive efforts are made, while in reality there are relatively few actual errands for Unionen. Unionens work with flexibility is analysed from a legitimacy perspective in relation to Unionens environment. How Unionen works in relation to flexible work is also problematized in relation to the challenges of today’s unions where they are faced with decreasing number of members, individualization of society and new forms for organizing work.

Abstract:
Integrity verification is essential to safe planning of wells. Although the complexity of wells has increased over the last decades, the process of integrity verification has not seen any significant changes. In order to reduce the number of engineering hours spent planning new wells, the work process, and corresponding engineering software needs improvements to be compatible with today’s requirements. In this thesis, tubing stress analysis and casing wear simulations have been conducted for an <i>High-Pressure High-Temperature</i> (HPHT) well on the Norwegian continental shelf using the industry leading software tools. Both the work process and engineering software have been subject to investigations. The tubing sees excessive forces from high temperatures and high pressures in the well. In order to verify the integrity of the tubing, possible well scenarios are modelled in the Landmark WellCat software. As the production casing serves as a well barrier during production, it is of high importance that casing wear does not compromise the integrity of the casing. Petris DrillNET has been used to model wear from drilling operations on the casings. Improvements to the work process and engineering software are suggested in order to simplify the integrity modelling and reduce the engineering time spent on well planning. Based on the above mentioned work, the following points of improvement have been identified:- Implementation of standards and technical requirements in the engineering software. - Reduction of software input parameters through the establishment of a company specific database of parameters. - Need for improved communication between software models to reduce the iterative nature of well planning.

Lindheimer, Tomás Ernesto. "Safety Evaluation of Work Zone Practices in Utah." DigitalCommons@USU, 2010. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/871.

Full text
Abstract:
Work zones present a risk to drivers and to personnel constructing the roadway. In 2005 work zones accounted for 2.5% of fatalities nationwide, 3.5% for the state of Utah. The goal of this research is to make work zones safer by quantifying the risk that they present to drivers. The approach of this research has been to review part 6 of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and compare the differences from the 2003 and 2009 editions, conduct field studies of Utah work zones, and develop a tool for measuring risk in work zones. In the 2009 MUTCD an effort is made to provide additional safety measures to disabled pedestrians. Also, guidelines are set for the use of new technology for work zones, flagger procedures, and incident management. Research was done to ascertain what several states are doing to promote safety around work zones. The states that are highlighted in this report are Arkansas, North Carolina, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Minnesota, and Virginia. These methods include integration of a Smart Work Zone system, late lane merge, investigation of higher quality traffic control devices, and application of other technologies to make drivers aware of work zone conditions. Discussion about the various technologies available and their effects on traffic found through research is also provided in this thesis. Research for safety and safety regulations continues. An audit process developed at Utah State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology was used to conduct an evaluation of work zones in Utah. The audit was instrumental in evaluating the measures being used on highway and interstate roads work sites. The results and observations of this research were utilized to make standards concerning conditions of signs and delineation devices. Also observations were used to determine risk factors pertaining to a work zone. These factors were implemented in a spreadsheet that served as an analysis tool for quantification of risk in a work zone. Eleven projects in highways and arterials were audited and analyzed with the analysis tool developed. The risk scores attained from this tool range in value, and though the values may not be an exact value of the present risk, the tool still proved to be effective as an estimation device for auditors and contractors alike. The tool also proved efficient in quickly identifying the areas of concern in the work zone, and giving an estimate on the impact that improvements will have on the safety of workers and drivers. For the 11 work zones audited, the recommendations were enforcement of speed limit, improvement of signs in the work zone, and use of positive protection, among others.

Jackson, Meredith A. "Do Roundabouts Work? An Evaluation for Uniform Approach Demands." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/76831.

Full text
Abstract:
With the increased prevalence of roundabouts in the United States, there is a need to evaluate the performance of roundabouts relative to other intersection control strategies. Few studies have compared roundabouts with other intersection control strategies in a systematic fashion. Consequently, this Thesis compares four types of intersection control strategies considering a single lane approach with a 58 km/hr speed limit and equal demand on all approaches. The study demonstrates that vehicle delay is minimized with the use of a roundabout intersection control for all demand levels below 500 veh/hr/approach. Above this point if the left turn percentage exceeds 70% traffic signal control is more efficient. The roundabout alternative also produces the fewest vehicle stops for low demand levels, low left turn demand and high right turn demand, however a TWSC alternative produces the least number of vehicle stops when the through and total demand is high. This study illustrates that fuel consumption and carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions can be improved with roundabout control over other intersection control strategies. The research presented here demonstrates that for low traffic demand levels roundabouts should be part of design alternatives considered for isolated intersection control.

Abstract:

In the current educational discourse there have been urgent calls for the United States to develop programs to prepare students for post-secondary success and to develop in students the skills necessary for workplace success. One avenue suggested to do this more effectively is to create more robust partnerships between educational institutions and employers. In particular, President Obama’s “Blueprint for an America Built to Last” (2012) calls for “new partnerships between community colleges and businesses to train and place 2 million skilled workers.” He also indicated that in order to address future workforce needs, he will “support partnerships between high schools and industry to create more career academies, which combine instruction in academic subjects and industry skills” (4). The Cristo Rey model of high school education is one variation of this model of partnership between the world of academics and the world of work.

This study is designed as a program evaluation of the Cristo Rey model of education whereby each student from a low SES family works five days a month in an entry level professional job for each year of attendance. In particular, this study seeks to examine alumni perceptions of the impact their high school corporate work-study program at one particular Cristo Rey School, Cristo Rey St. Martin, has had on their lives. In addition to alumni perceptions, this study will also gather the perceptions of workplace supervisors. The study will also look at how alumni are doing in terms of college persistence and completion. In particular, it will look at how the classes of 2011, 2012, and 2013 are doing in terms of post-secondary enrollment and persistence relative to national averages and relative to peer group (low SES) averages utilizing the National Student Clearinghouse database and reports. By triangulating these data points, the study seeks to answer the following question. What impact is the corporate work-study program (CWSP) having on the graduates?

Abstract:
A great deal of evaluations are commissioned and conducted every year in social work, but research reports a lack of use of the evaluation results. This may depend on how the evaluations are conducted, but it may also depend on how social workers use evaluation results. The aim of this thesis is to explore and analyse evaluation practice in social work from an empirical, normative, and constructive perspective. The objectives are partly to increase the understanding of how we can produce relevant and useful knowledge for social work using evaluation results and partly, to give concrete suggestions on improvements on how to conduct evaluations. The empirical data has been organised as four cases, which are evaluations of temporary programmes in social work. The source materials are documents and interviews. The results show that findings from evaluations of temporary programmes are sparingly used in social work. Evaluations seem to have unclear intentions with less relevance for learning and improvement. In contrast, the evaluators themselves are using the data for new purposes. These empirical findings are elaborated further by using the knowledge form phronesis, which can be translated into practical wisdom. The overall conclusion is that social work is in need of knowledge that social workers find relevant and useful in practice. In order to meet these needs, researchers and evaluators must broaden their knowledge view and begin to include practical knowledge instead of solely relying on scientific knowledge when conducting evaluations. Finally, a new evaluation model is suggested. It is called phronesis-based evaluation and is argued to have great potential to address and include professionals’ praxis-based knowledge. It advocates a view that takes social work’s dynamic context into serious consideration and acknowledges values and power as important components of the evaluation process.

Abstract:
This study aimed to determine if the Department of Behavioral and Mental Health at a local school district is improving the academic outcomes of the students it provides services to. The purpose was to evaluate its effectiveness in order to improve and expand services. This is important since schools have become a primary setting to address the mental health needs of children and youth. The research design consisted of a quantitative, one-group pretest-posttest as students’ outcomes were assessed before and after treatment. The data was analyzed using a paired samples t-test. The findings from this study demonstrated no statistical significance in students’ grades and attendance, thereby demonstrating the need for further research on this topic.

Abstract:
This is an summative evaluation of the Homeless Chronically Mentally Ill program which examined the impact of case management and the outcome of the program on participant's substance abuse usage. Twenty-six participants' participated in the study. Participants were evaluated by two scales, the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Reid-Gundlach Social Service Satisfaction Scale. Participants were sampled from those who were admitted into the HCMI program. The result of the study revealed that the majority (73.1) of those surveyed were satisfied overall with the program and 73.1 percent felt they could count on their social worker in times of trouble. This indicates that the HCMI program is meeting its goal to serve those veterans who are homeless and chronically mentally ill in order to help them reconnect into society.

Price, Andrew D. F. "An evaluation of production output for in situ concrete work." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1986. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7285.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis is to develop reliable methods of measuring output levels for construction plant and labour, with a view to establishing realistic output rates for concreting operations. This thesis demonstrates that most of the variability in production rates can be quickly explained, leaving relatively constant levels of output f or individual construction operations (i.e. basic operation times). The primary factors in determining output rates were found to be work rate, delays and waiting caused by poor management, and poor motivation. The latter two items accounted f or more than fifty per cent of the available working time on many sites, whereas work rate varied only slightly. This last finding may be surprising, but the results indicated that when work was being done the effort applied appeared fairly constant to the observer. However, the time spent working was largely dependent upon the level of motivation induced through the payment system. Where a combination of good direct supervision and satisfactory financial incentives were present, high levels of motivation were observed, conversely, low motivation occurred on sites where minimum day-work payments were present. Investigations into several construction trades indicate that work study techniques can be modified to meet the requirements of most construction operations, sites and companies, whether the requirements be a complex synthesis of basic operation times or the more simple determination of site efficiency. The key to this portability lies in the isolation of basic operation times via the application of site efficiency factors. In this thesis, primary work study techniques are identified and discussed. The need for specific construction work study techniques is shown to be of paramount importance. The results from over seventy concrete pours are combined and statistically analysed to produce realistic output rates arid current levels of production. Site factors are combined and statistically analysed to produce a relationship between efficiency and level of remuneration. A comparison is drawn between: the production rates achieved on several sites; and the output rates currently being used in the planning and estimating processes.

Sharif, Shaheedah. "A program evaluation of the Georgia justice project's employment assistance program." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2004. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/2038.

Full text
Abstract:
This evaluation examines the Georgia Justice Project's (GJP) employment program. GJP has been assisting its clients since 1986. GJP is an unlikely mix of lawyers, social workers, and a landscaping company. The Georgia Justice Project defends people accused of crimes and, win or lose, they stand by their clients while they rebuild their lives. GJP's mission is to ensure justice for the indigent criminally accused and to take a holistic approach to assisting them in establishing crime-free lives as productive citizens. GJP's goal is to have a positive impact on the lives of individual clients and their families, which in turn positively impacts the community by decreasing crime and violence. Helping clients rebuild their lives often involves helping them obtain employment. In 1993, New Horizon Landscaping Company was created to assist clients with employment needs. The services the employment program provides include job readiness, job placement, training, and GED preparation. These services help clients remove/overcome barriers (i.e., legal case, criminal record). The sample consists of sixty individuals who received assistance in 2002. The social services intake form was utilized to gather the information needed for the evaluation. The data was obtained by assessing each client's case file records. The following questions were addressed in this evaluation: (1) What were the employment needs presented by the program's clients? (2) What specific needs were met by existing services? (3) What needs were not being addressed? The data were collected by the researcher and interpreted for data analysis. The findings from this evaluation were expected to increase awareness when working with ex-offenders in the field of social work. The results of the evaluation and implications are discussed in later chapters.

Cooper, Susan. "Transformative evaluation : an interpretive study of youth workers' experience of using participatory evaluation." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3759.

Full text
Abstract:
This interpretivist research aims to add to the body of knowledge in relation to the impact of managerialism in the youth work sector by investigating the ways in which youth workers and their practices are influenced by systems of accountability, externally imposed targets and measurement. Evaluation in this context is reduced to upward compliance; the professional no longer responsible for defining good practice or determining the outcomes of their work. The concern that the learning and development functions of evaluation are lost warranted the research. Participatory evaluation can offer resistance to evaluation as ‘technology of power’ because of its ongoing process of collective action, reflection and knowledge creation. Using an ‘insider’ methodology, a new participatory evaluation methodology was developed and implemented to explore how this different approach influenced the youth workers’ sense of self and practice. Data were gathered via individual semi-structured interviews before and after the implementation of the participatory evaluation and an inductive thematic analysis was used to identify emergent themes. This research contributes to knowledge by showing that youth workers have been serious challenged by managerialism, and performativity particularly in relation to maintaining their personal and professional values. It confirms that they view accountability metrics as inadequate for capturing the complexity and demonstrating the value of their work. Of particular significance is the knowledge that this study adds in regard to the design and use of participatory evaluation. A new way of thinking about evaluation is proposed. Transformative Evaluation (TE) offers a methodology that supports the learning and development functions of evaluation. In addition, TE was seen to enhance practice outcomes, raise worker confidence and well-being potentially supporting a more agentic response to change.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Employment Plus Program in the Chesapeake(VA)Public Schools by determining the extent to which the program was effective in achieving its goals. Six questions were addressed: (1) What proportion of the students completed in each year between 1991 and 1997 all five parts of the GED test at a passing level? (2) To what extent did the program change the behavior of the students? (3) What pre-employment skills of the students were developed as a result of participation in the program? (4) What employment skills of the students were developed as a result of participation in the program? (5) What basic living skills of the students improved as a result of participation in the program? (6) To what extent did the program provide hope for the students to graduate in the Employment Plus Program? Except for the data on the first question-- the propor- tion of students passing the GED between 1991-97, forty randomly selected students (50 percent) from the 1993-94 school year were the focus of this study. This was the first year that the program was in all five high schools in the school division. Data were obtained through teacher, student, and employer interviews and through a review of written program materials. Data were analyzed thematically and findings were shared through tables and narrative summaries. The researcher reported the Employment Plus Program findings to be (in order of importance): 71.6 percent of the students passed the GED in the years 1991-97, only two students were dismissed for discipline infractions in 1993- 94, four of the Employment Plus students that started working in 1993-94 are still working in the same job today. In the years 1991 through 1996, progress has been made in the number of students obtaining their GED. One year, 1996-97, showed a regression of students obtaining their GED. The researcher concluded as a result of the findings that the Employment Plus Program is meeting the majority of the stated goals. The 1993-94 baseline data should be used for future comparisons. Variables which affect the Employment Plus Program that could be manipulated to increase the number of students in obtaining their GED would be to improve upon the student truancy and drop-out rates. Educators should use this information to continue to help the students obtain their GED in the future.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of emergency medical service working conditions, and to develop recommendations to aid in minimizing harmful actions and behaviors inherent in EMS work. The naturalistic data collected in this study allowed researchers to perform analysis in a rural emergency driving environment to identify contributing factors to attending medic behavior, severity of biomechanical forces experienced in the driver and patient compartment, and an evaluation of emergency medical response safety culture. Based upon research findings, the project includes development of a series of environmental, ergonomic, policy, or training recommendations to mitigate circumstances that cause potentially unsafe operations in the driver's and patient's compartment of the ambulance. This study used naturalistic data and video, survey responses, focus groups, and agency patient care records to analyze the rural medics' working environment during emergency patient transportation. Accelerometer data was analyzed for 102 separate emergency transports to provide descriptive statistics relevant to whole-body vibration experienced by the medics during patient care. Five years of patient care records were analyzed to identify specific patient illnesses and medical procedures associated with traveling in emergency response mode. Restraint compliance rates were collected for both self-reported (21.5% restrained) and observed (2.6% restrained) data collection methods. Focus groups identified factors influencing medics' choice to be unrestrained, characterized by a reduced ability to provide patient care, the belief that restraint devices will cause harm to the medics, and the belief that the restraint devices are ineffective in a crash situation. Finally, reach analysis was conducted to highlight the procedures and equipment retrieval which require the medics to assume positions resulting in awkward and unstable postures during transport. The results of this study will add to the growing body of knowledge surrounding the behaviors of EMS workers in a real work setting, will aid in understanding the complexities of EMS safety culture, and can be applied toward different aspects of EMS work such as driver or medic training.

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Work Engagement is one construct of many that forms part of the complex nomological network of constructs underlying the behaviour of working man2. Work Engagement is an important construct both from an individual as well as from an organisational perspective. Human resource management interventions aimed at enhancing Work Engagement aspire to contribute to the achievement of the organisation’s primary objective and the well-being of the organisation’s employees. Such interventions will most likely also be valued by individuals within the workplace, as individuals will be able to experience a sense of personal fulfilment through self-expression at work. It is therefore essential to gain a valid understanding of the Work Engagement construct and the psychological mechanism that underpins it, in order to design human resource interventions that will successfully enhance Work Engagement. The current study raises the question why variance in Work Engagement exists amongst different employees working in different organisational contexts. The research objective of the current study is to develop and empirically test an explanatory Work Engagement structural model that will provide a valid answer to this question. In this study, a comprehensive Work Engagement structural model was proposed. An ex post facto correlational design with structural equation modelling (SEM) as the statistical analysis technique was used to test the substantive research hypotheses as represented by the Work Engagement structural model. Furthermore, the current study tested two additional narrow-focus structural models describing the impact of value congruence on Work Engagement by using an ex post facto correlational design with polynomial regression as the statistical analysis technique. A convenience sample of 227 teachers working in public sector schools falling under the jurisdiction of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) participated in the study. The comprehensive Work Engagement model achieved reasonable close fit. Support was found for all of the hypothesised theoretical relationships in the Work Engagement structural model, except for the influence of the PsyCap*Job Characteristics interaction effect on Meaningfulness and for three of the five latent polynomial regression terms added in the model in an attempt to derive response surface test values. The response surface analyses findings were mixed. Based on the obtained results, meaningful practical recommendations were derived.
Werkverbintenis word as ‘n belangrike konstruk beskou vanuit ‘n individuele sowel as vanuit ‘n organisatoriese perspektief. ‘n Omvattende Werkverbintenis strukturele model is in hierdie studie voorgestel.

Harb, Rami. "Safety and Operational Evaluation of Dynamic Lane Merging in Work Zones." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2009. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2203.

Abstract:
Traffic safety and mobility of roadway work zones have been considered to be one of the major concerns in highway traffic safety and operations in Florida. In intent to expose Florida's work zones crash characteristics, the Florida Traffic Crash Records Database for years 2002, 2003 and 2004 were explored. Statistical models were estimated and Florida's work zone crash traits for single vehicle crashes and two-vehicle crashes were drawn. For the single-vehicle crashes, trucks were found more likely to be involved in single vehicle crashes in freeway work zones compared to freeways without work zones. Straight level roadways are significantly affected by the presence of work zones. The lighting condition is also one of the risk factors associated with work zone single-vehicle crashes. In fact, at work areas with poor or no lighting during dark conditions, motor vehicles are more prone for crashes compared to non-work zone locations with poor or no lighting during dark. The weather condition is positively associated with single-vehicle work zone crashes. Results showed that during rainy weather, drivers are less likely to be involved in work zone crashes compared to the same weather conditions in non-work zone locations. This fact may be due to the vigilant driving pattern during rain at work zones. For the two-vehicle work zone crashes, results showed that drivers younger than 25 years of age and drivers older than 75 years old have the highest risk to be the at-fault driver in a work zone crash. Male drivers have significantly higher risk than female drivers to be the at-fault driver. The model conspicuously shows that drivers under the influence of narcotics/alcohol are more likely to cause crashes (i.e. at-fault driver) at work zones. Road geometry and the lighting condition were significant risk factors associated with two-vehicle work zone crashes. Freeways straight segments are more susceptible to crashes in work zone areas. Poor lighting or no lighting at all during dark can lead to significantly higher crash hazard at work zones. Foggy weather causes a significant mount in work zone crash risk compared to non-work zone locations. In addition to that, work zones located in rural areas have higher crash potential than work zones located in urban areas. After examining the current Florida work zone Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans, known as the Motorist Awareness System (MAS), it was realized that this system is static hence does not react to changing traffic conditions. An ITS-based dynamic lane management system, known as dynamic lane merging system, was explored to supplement the existing MAS plans. Two forms of dynamic lane management were recognized as dynamic lane merging namely the early merge and the late merge. These two systems were designed to advise drivers on definite merging locations. Previously deployed dynamic lane merging systems comprise several Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS) and traffic sensors. The addition of multiple PCMSs to the current MAS plans may encumber the latter and usually requires relatively extensive equipment installation and relocation which could be inefficient for short term movable work zones. Therefore, two Simplified Dynamic Lane Merging Systems (SDLMS) were designed, deployed, and tested on Florida's short term movables work zones. The first SDLMS was a simplified dynamic early merge system (early SDLMS) and the second SDLMS was a simplified dynamic late merge system (late SDLMS). Both SDLMS consisted of supplementing the MAS plans used in Florida work zones with an ITS-based lane management system. From the two-to-one work zone configuration (first site), it was noted that the ratio of the work zone throughput at the onset of congestion over the demand volume was significantly the highest for the early SDLMS compared to the MAS and late SDLMS. Travel time through the work was the lowest for the early SDLMS, followed by the late SDLMS, and then MAS. However, the differences in mean travel times were not statistically significant. It was also concluded that the early SDLMS resulted in higher early merging compared to the MAS and that the late SDLMS in higher late merging compared to the MAS. The first site was used as a pilot for testing the system since data collection was limited to two days for each MOT type. Hence, operational measures of effectiveness (MOEs) could not be evaluated under different demand volumes. It should also be noted that the RTMS was not available during the MAS data collection which disabled us from collecting speed data. From the three-to-two work zone configuration site, data was collected extensively relative to the first site. The RTMS was available for all three MOT types tested which enabled the collection of the speed data that are used as a safety surrogate measure. The mean speed fluctuation in the closed lane was the highest under the MAS system for all demand volumes and in all three lanes. Comparing the dynamic early merge and the dynamic late merge mean speed fluctuations in the closed lane and the middle lane, results showed that the mean speed fluctuation for the early merge are lower than those of the late merge under all demand volumes. However, the difference in the mean speed fluctuation is only statistically significant under demand volume ranging between 1 and 500 veh/hr. As for the shoulder lane, it was noted that the speed mean speed fluctuation is significantly the lowest for demand volumes ranging between 1500 veh/hr and 2000 veh/hr under the late SDLMS compared to the early SDLMS and the MAS. The ratio of the throughput over demand volume was taken as the operational MOE. Results showed that the Dynamic early merge performs significantly better than the regular MAS under demand volume ranging between 500 veh/hr and 2000 veh/hr. Results also showed that the dynamic late merge perform better than the MAS under volumes ranging between 1500 veh/hr and 2000 veh/hr and significantly poorer than the MAS under low volumes. Therefore, the late SDLMS is not recommended for implementation under low volumes. Results also showed that the late SDLMS performs better than the early SDLMS under higher volume (ranging between 1500 veh/hr to 2000 veh/hr). A simulated work zone with a two-to-one lane closure configuration was coded in VISSIM and operational and safety MOEs under MAS, early SDLMS, and late SDLMS were compared under different drivers' adherence rate to the merging instructions, truck percentage in the traffic composition, and traffic demand volumes. Results indicated that throughputs are higher in general under the early SDLMS, travel times are lower under the early SDLMS. However, overall, the early SDLMS resulted in the highest speed variance among MOT types. The MAS resulted in the lowest speed variances overall.

Sherman, Kim Michelle. "An Evaluation of Fatigue and Performance Changes During Intermittent Overhead Work." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/9657.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined changes in task performance during performance of simulated overhead assembly task. The study objectives were to better understand the relationship between fatigue development during overhead work and task performance. This relationship is important, considering that performance changes, or decreases in task quality, have the potential for justifying and driving ergonomic changes that can help to improve worker safety. Sixteen people participated in eight experimental conditions (two levels of duty cycles, two work heights, and two hand positions). Four dependent measures based on endurance, subjective, objective, and physiological fatigue were used to quantify shoulder fatigue and were collected during the experiment. An overhead work task required participants to use a hand tool to strike targets at two reach distances above their head. Task performance was measured as a function of the closeness to the target center and the ability to apply a consistent force throughout the experiment. Data collected in this experiment is intended to provide a research basis for creating design guidelines that will help maximize efficiency and quality while reducing the likelihood of developing shoulder fatigue.

Abstract:
This is an exploratory design that examines the effectiveness of Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Youth Leadership Program. This study was based on the premise that youth who participate in this program will have an increase in community service activities, increase in advocacy for issues in the community, enhanced leadership skills, and increase their knowledge in sexual health and gender issues. Because only three youths participated in the study, the evaluator could not evaluate the effectiveness of the Youth Leadership Program. However, this study does provide information based on whether the hypothesis would have been accepted or rejected. In conclusion more research should be conducted on the Youth Leadership Program to measure the effectiveness of the program.

Abstract:
Nurses' perceptions of their work environment and empowerment in relationship to patient satisfaction are well explored in the literature. Empowerment has been linked to improved job satisfaction and improving the elements of empowerment cam improve overall patient satisfaction. This project examined 2 nursing units, 1 with lower patient satisfaction scores (Unit A) and 1 with higher patient satisfaction scores (Unit B), in order to compare their structural empowerment scores as measured by the Conditions of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire II (CWEQ-II). A total of 29 nurses who worked full-time, part-time, or per diem on 1 of the 2 units were recruited to participate in the project (11 from Unit A and 18 from Unit B). Using Kanter's theory as a framework, the nurses were asked to complete the CWEQ-II and overall scores as well as subscale scores were calculated. Scores were estimated using a Mann-Whitney U test given the lack of normality and linearity of the data. Both units had a moderate overall empowerment level (Unit A: 19.55; Unit B: 21.47). Unit A had a significant difference in Access to Resources: Acquiring Temporary Help (z = -2.07, p < 0.05) as compared to Unit B. In comparing nurses with a Bachelor's and higher nursing degree to nurses with less than a Bachelor's degree, there was a significant difference in Access to Resources: Acquiring Temporary Help (z = -3.115, p < 0.05) and overall Resource Subscale (z = -2.157, p < 0.05). The project demonstrates the need for organizations to create a workplace that promotes empowerment among nurses as a strategy to improve patient and organizational outcomes. A work environment that promotes a nurse's control over his or her practice and decision-making ability may lead to higher patient satisfaction and may become the role model of a nursing practice environment as a result.

Abstract:
This study examines the motivations of student volunteers participating in AIDS Walk Atlanta 2004. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to make AIDS Walk Atlanta 2004 a success. Volunteers participate in the AIDS walk in many different capacities. Volunteers helped with mailing, canvassing, phone banking, data entry, registration, and much more. The number one function of a volunteer is to participate in the fundraising walk-a-thon in order to raise money to benefit AIDS research, AIDS education, AIDS awareness, and AIDS patients. Motivations of volunteerism include, but are not limited to, educational/work related requirement, social support, self-fulfillment, increasing HIV/AIDS awareness, and honoring victims of AIDS. A sample of 237 participants completed a questionnaire examining the motives behind their volunteer efforts. The Exchange theory is used to describe the needs that humans have for one another, with exchange being the medium through which the need is satisfied. Finally, this evaluation provides implications for social work practice that assesses the motivations of student volunteerism in AIDS Walk Atlanta 2004, as well as in other community service projects.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the efforts of the Fulton County Court Appointed Special Advocate (FCCASA) Program and its effectiveness in permanency planning. Permanency planning refers to efforts to move children through the court system in a timely and efficient manner. Fulton county Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers collaborate with parties who have a legal interest to children involved in deprivation and neglect proceedings. The outcome of permanency is measured by the following outcome indicators: average number of months (in the past year) children in the CASA program are under court jurisdiction; percent of CASA children dismissed from court custody at six, twelve, and eighteen months after being assigned a CASA; and percent of CASA cases that experienced case closure with the court during the past 12 months. A sample of 25 children having a CASA ordered and assigned to their case was compared with a sample of 25 children who had no CASA assigned to their case. A chi-squared test, t-test, and ANOVA were used to interpret the frequency data collected on child outcomes variables related to time spent under court jurisdiction. The use of the ecological model allows for cases to be looked at individually, while also providing a holistic view of the interconnected and inseparable relationship of which individuals are a part. This scientific and systematic approach provides better insight in to why CASA volunteers are more effective in promoting permanency for children involved in deprivation and neglect proceedings in the Fulton County Juvenile Court. A brief narrative hignlights the findings and results of the study. Finally, this evaluation provides implications for social work practice that assess the strengths and weaknesses of having a volunteer program such as Fulton County CASA advocate for abused and neglected children involved in deprivation cases.
