Abstract:
The way I approached this analysis was to start with two general statements, one on the form and the other on the harmony. This was so the reader could get a sense of the direction of the piece. Then I did a fairly detailed analysis of the introduction since most of the ideas originate from there. The rest of the piece is discussed in less detail, but occasionally there were places that needed a little more detailed explanation. In the postscript I describe some of my influences.

Full text
Abstract:
The Prelude, Chorale and Fantasy is a tonally conceived work for orchestra with a duration of approximately twenty minutes which uses as its inspiration the final chapter of Ecclesiastes. It is constructed from a relatively small number of germinal elements which function throughout the work as connecting forces and icons. In it can be found musical ideas used to represent the Trinity, the most significant of which are the quotations of the hymn "How Brightly Shines the Morning Star" which appear throughout.
A greater understanding of the work can be gained by approaching it first on a philosophical level, making connections between the Biblical text and the music and extrapolating from those connections. Following this, a step by step analysis will show the microscopic structure of the work and its relationship to the larger form.

Schmidt, Douglas Garth. "Eyes without light." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/32243.

Full text
Abstract:
"Eyes Without Light" is conceived and scored for symphonic orchestra. The title of this work reflects personal concerns regarding global environmental issues. The phrase "eyes without light", derived from the Gaelic term "sul gan solas", refers in this instance to the blind greed of multi-national industrial and political corporations which are responsible for the destruction of the earth's ecosystem (primarily the forests and oceans). This work, influenced by the 19th-century symphonic poem initiated by Beethoven, Berlioz and Liszt, is programmatic in nature. The busy, confrontational destructiveness of mankind is represented by repeated or moving sixteenth notes at the beginning and end of the piece. These sections utilize varying densities of semitone clusters and are predominantly dissonant. The calmness and balance of the planet earth is represented by the middle section of the work, which consists primarily of slow-moving sustained lines. These sustained lines move to a sonority which is the structural focal point of the work (m 129-131). This sonority is resolved in the final measures. Both the focal point sonority and its resolution are constructed of P5 and P4 intervals. The aggressive destructiveness of mankind is emphasized by the repeated dissonant chords in the concluding measures (m 140-147, m 151-157) of the section.

Barney, Quinten Zehn. "The Neglected Facsimile: An Examination and Comparative Study of Facsimile No. 3 of the Book of Abraham." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7598.

Full text
Abstract:
Facsimile No. 3 of the Book of Abraham contains parallels to other Egyptian throne scenes found elsewhere, which fact has led many to pass Facsimile No. 3 off as commonplace. However, the lack of a broad comparative study examining these types of scenes in their varying contexts has rendered most conclusions regarding Facsimile No. 3 superficial at best. Hugh Nibley was perhaps the first to notice this problem, arguing that "The great abundance of pictures of the Facsimile No. 3 variety calls for the widest possible comparative study. In a case like this the student's first obligation is to compare, as widely and as carefully as possible." This thesis takes a critical step in solving this problem by looking at both the textual and iconographic elements found in Facsimile No.3 and comparing them with the larger corpus of Egyptian texts, temples, tombs, and stelae. Significantly, this study compares Facsimile No. 3 with the throne scenes from every other publicly known copy of the Book of Breathings, the ancient Egyptian document on which Facsimile No. 3 was found. In this thesis, I argue that Facsimile No. 3 is not as commonplace as some scholars have argued in the past. I begin this thesis with an introduction which presents some of the main issues surrounding Facsimile No. 3, including some of the likely reasons as to why it has remained the least studied of the three Facsimiles of the Book of Abraham. The first chapter contains a literature review of the published writings and theories that deal with Facsimile No. 3. Chapter Two gives a closer look at the hieroglyphs of Facsimile No. 3 and discusses some of the challenges relating to the translations that have been offered for them. The iconography of Facsimile No. 3 is discussed in the third chapter, where it is compared with the larger corpus of Book of Breathings vignettes. This discussion is especially important, as it is the first study to date which compares Facsimile No. 3 with the vignettes from all other extant copies of the Book of Breathings. In Chapter Four, this comparative study broadens, and parallels to Facsimile No. 3 are looked for in Ptolemaic copies of the Book of the Dead, Temples, Tombs, and funerary stelae.

Fenwick, James A. "The Use of Faceplate Assemblies as Facsimiles of Custom Hearing Instruments." PDXScholar, 1994. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4735.

Full text
Abstract:
Custom-designed hearing instruments comprise the majority of those dispensed in the United States today. Because of their custom nature, there has been no means of evaluating them until they have been completed. There would be advantages to evaluating custom instruments prior to their completion. This study investigates a means of evaluating custom instruments prior to their final assembly into the customized shell. This is done by having the subject listen to the circuitry of the instrument while it is still mounted on the faceplate, which is accomplished by coupling the faceplate assembly to the subject's ear with foam earplug. To determine if the faceplate assembly, when coupled to the subject's ear, is a facsimile of the completed instrument, the insertion gain of the faceplate assembly was compared to the insertion gain of the completed instrument. Real ear measurements were obtained for both conditions (faceplate assembly vs. custom instrument) on twelve subjects. Once insertion gain was measured, the faceplate assemblies were then converted into custom instruments and insertion gain remeasured. A two-way Analysis of Variance test revealed no significant difference between the two test conditions at five representative test frequencies. A tolerance template, as specified by ANSI S3.22 1982, was used as a second criterion for similarity between two conditions. The tolerance template was superimposed over the insertion gain curves of the twelve faceplate assembly conditions to determine if the insertion gain curves of the completed instrument fell within acceptable variances. None of the insertion gain curves for the completed instruments fell completely within the tolerances allowed by the template. Based on this criterion, it was concluded there was a significant difference between the insertion gain of the two conditions and therefore the faceplate assembly was not a facsimile of the completed instrument, where insertion gain was concerned. However, from a subjective standpoint the faceplate assembly might still have some utility in the fitting of the custom in-the-ear hearing instruments. For example, it could be used to allow potential hearing aid wearers to experience different technologies during the preselection phase of the fitting process.

Abstract:
The paper details and discusses the compositional issues and techniques employed in the candidate's M.Mus. Thesis Composition Filigranes pour les Freres Limbourg. The piece takes its title and inspiration from the work of the fourteenth-century master-illuminators and also makes reference to music of the same period, while at the same time being grounded in a post-serial aesthetic. The composition's relationship to these models and the specific compositional processes derived from the resulting fusion of certain aspects of mediaeval music (including modality and numerology) with serial technique are described and illustrated. Special emphasis is placed on the interaction of abstract organisational principles (such as permutation) and their musical results.

Wodarczak, Erwin. ""The facts about fax" : facsimile transmission and archives." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29677.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, facsimile transmission, or "fax", has become the leading medium of written telecommunication. At the same time, the basic technology for fax has been in existence for some 150 years. Nevertheless, there has been little analysis of facsimile transmission in an archival context. This thesis aims to fill at least part of this gap in archival literature. The first chapter is an overview of the history of fax, and examines the various transmission and recording techniques developed over the years, discusses the uses to which these techniques have been put, and describes potential sources from which an archives might acquire facsimile documents. The next chapter illustrates modern facsimile processes in detail, analyzes the chemical and physical make-up of papers and inks used, and explores the conservation problems inherent in certain kinds of facsimile paper. On the basis of this technical examination, the rest of the dissertation discusses the treatment of fax documents in the archival context, in terms of both theory and practice, with specific reference to law, archival theory, and records management. The nature of facsimiles as records and the characteristics of their physical form are amply discussed; and their legal value is examined to determine the criteria to be used in their appraisal. In this regard, special attention is given to the way in which the legal profession handles problems of authenticity and security inherent in fax transmission, and to the way in which organizations deal with the operational and legal problems presented by facsimiles. Archivists have to be alert to changes in communication technology, in order to determine if archival theory and practice have to adapt to such changes. In the case of facsimile transmission, this study concludes that no fundamental changes in archival theory are required in order to deal with it effectively in the archival context. What is needed is a basic understanding of the technology involved, and a thorough knowledge of archival concepts and of relevant legal principles.

Abstract:
The notion of identity between the ancient and the contemporary, which has its source in Mayan studies, informs the design principles of this work. Specific techniques are listed for the design of musical space and time in Guacamayo, which is "a musical drama that strives for synthesis." There follows an outline of the principle motivic material, approaches to melodic construction and text setting, techniques used to design space (or pitch) and time (or rhythm)--including traditional harmony, symmetrical modes, non-octaviating space and random number generation in the first case, and speech rhythm, folk rhythm, metre and tempo in the second--as well as the role of summation series in the construction of both time and space. A discussion of dialectic concepts, and the ways in which different techniques are combined to create a sense of motion between simple textures and complex ones leads to consideration of form-determining placement of important scenes from the opera. Comments on the composition of the orchestra and electroacoustic music conclude the essay.

Abstract:
Optical storage technology holds the capability to increase the amount of data stored on a single 5 1/4-inch disc from 1.2 Megabytes (Mb) to 640 Mb. The three basic types of optical disks, Compact Disk-Read Only Memory (CD-ROM), Write Once, Read Many (WORM), and erasable optical, each has its own application niche. For this reason, it is critical for managers to analyze present systems carefully prior to seeking optical storage solutions. An in-depth evaluation of performance and interfacing requirements of currently marketed optical systems was performed. That evaluation was used in the process of determining if Defense Manpower Data Center's (DMDC) Querry Facsimile (QFAX) System, a system of nine databases currently stored on a direct access storage device (DASD), was a candidate for an optical storage application. Additional consideration was given to industry standards for optical devices. A detailed analysis of the current system configuration and end-users requirements was made to determine acceptability of optical systems interfaces and associated capabilities. Abstract:

Testing is a crucial part when developing electronics. One way to lower the costs and increase the efficiency is to avoid human interaction. This can be done with automated testing. The purpose with this thesis is to look into the possibility of automating telephony and facsimile tests with "off the shelf components" such as modems and standard computers. The proposed solution was put together and the needed software was developed, using Java. When testing electronics it is of most importance that the hardware and software carrying out the tests are reliable. To be able to ensure this, the software has been thoroughly tested, and the different error sources discussed. The biggest cause to the problems found was that the modems weren’t reliable. A general work around is presented, implemented and tested.

Thesis (Masters Diploma( Technology)) --Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 1989
Soekor's exploration programme has moved totally offshore and expanded greatly in the past few years. Use of computers necessitated the exchange of data between offshore and land installations. At the same time the exploration programme is moving further offshore While the coastal. stations of the Post & Telecommunications can not handle the volume of traffic that the oil drills present nor the data modes. A study of the transmission requirements revealed that a minimum of one voice channel per drill must be available at all times, While Some 20M byte of data per oil drill per year will be transmitted. Facsimile will be needed at times, also as a back-up for the data systems. A study of publications revealed that only five of the eleven methods studied where viable, namely VHF-EM, satellite, HF-telephony, HF-teleprinter and HF-data. These possibilities as well as their practical implementation were studied in depth. The effect of the atmospheric conditions on the propagation of VHF-signals around the coastline was studied and 17 sites identified and evaluated from the mouth of the Orange River to Port Elizabeth in respect of coverage, accessibility, facilities and cost. INMARSAT facilities and costs were evaluated as well as HF-systems. Finally a system was designed consisting of HF-telephony, separate "packet" HF radio data system, satellite telephony back-up and satellite high speed data as well as a limited VHF system. The entire system is complemented by marine telephony and telegraphy equipment. On-going system guidance in the form of propagation predictions is provided. Some existing equipment was used, While R950 000 has been spent to date on additional equipment.

Abstract:
The hieratic script has never been studied systematically regarding its peculiarities in abbreviations, orthography, functions or historical development, nor in comparison with cursive and monumental hieroglyphs as well as Demotic signs. After Möller’s Hieratic Palaeography volumes I to III, being based on merely 32 sources, Egyptologists compiled several more or less complete palaeographies on single texts, groups of texts or time spans. However, the comparability of signs is often hindered or impossible due to the heterogeneity of writing surfaces, the quality of facsimiles and photos or the choice of examples and the degree of detail. Furthermore, the word or sign context is often lacking. Since April 2015 a long-term project for a possible maximum of 23 years is located at the universities of Mainz and Darmstadt, being financed by the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. The lecture presents the aims and methods of this project and discusses the state of affairs with regard to the development and structuring 1) of a digital palaeography of the cursive scripts, including all stages of hieratic, abnormal hieratic and cursive hieroglyphic scripts from the Early Dynastic period through to Roman times, and 2) of a database with extensive metadata that allows the study of various topics among which the emergence, development, regional use, context and economy of scripts as well as the identification of individual scribes’ hands. Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 233-235.
The CCITT X.400 Message Handling System resides in the Application Layer of the seven-layer Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection. It bypasses the services of the Presentation Layer completely to interact directly with the Session Layer. The objectives of this thesis are to show how the general Session Layer may be tailored to be minimally conformant to the requirements of X. 400; to produce a formal specification of this session layer; and to show how this session layer may be implemented on a real system. The session services required by X. 400 are those of the Halfduplex, Minor Synchronization, Exceptions and Activity Management functional units of the CCITT X.215 Session Service Definition. These services, and particularly their use by X.400, are described in detail. State tables describing these services are derived from the general session service state tables. Those elements of the CCITT X. 225 Session Protocol Specification which are required to provide only those services required by X. 400 are described in detail. State tables describing this session protocol are derived from the general session protocol state tables. A formal specification of the session layer for X.400 is presented using the Formal Description Technique Estelle. This specification includes a complete session entity, which characterizes the entire session layer for X.400. A session entity for supporting X.400 is partially implemented and interfaced to an existing X.400 product on a real system. Only the Session Connection Establishment Phase of the session protocol is implemented to illustrate the technique whereby the entire session protocol may be implemented. This implementation uses the C programming language in the UNIX operating system environment.

Abstract:
This study investigated commensal feeding interactions between the European harvestman (P. opilio L.) and the predatory mites Balaustium spp. and Anystis baccarum L. It also investigated the feeding behaviour of P. opilio. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory using standardised temperature, humidity, photoperiod and experimental arenas, with eggs of the brown blowfly (Calliphora stygia F.) as prey facsimiles. Due to initial difficulties in obtaining enough predatory mites, mite feeding was manually simulated piercing blowfly eggs with a minuten pin. P. opilio consumed significantly more freeze-killed than live blowfly eggs, indicating that freezing induced chemical and/or physical changes to blowfly eggs that are detected by P. opilio. Significantly more manually pierced eggs were consumed by P. opilio compared with unpierced ones, demonstrating that piercing caused a chemical and/or physical to the egg and increased the feeding rates of P. opilio. Different densities of eggs had no effect on the numbers eaten by P. opilio and placing single pierced eggs next to groups of unpierced eggs also had no effect on the numbers of unpierced eggs eaten. These results suggest that P. opilio does not exhibit klinokinesis or orthokinesis to intensify its search for prey around the area where previous prey were located. P. opilio ate significantly more brown blowfly eggs that had previously been fed on by mites, demonstrating that a short term commensal interaction existed. However, further work is required to demonstrate if the relationship is commensal in the longer term. A comparison between hand-pierced and mite-pierced eggs showed that P. opilio ate significantly more of the former indicating that mite and hand piercing were quantitatively different. The potential for, and importance of, other commensal or mutual relationships between predators in agroecosystems is discussed. The lack of klinokinesis and orthokinesis in P. opilio is compared with other predators and parasitoids that do exhibit these behaviours. The means by which prey are detected by P. opilio are discussed in relation to interpreting behaviours such as prey inspection. Concerns about the effect of pre-treatment and handling of sentinel prey and the problems of using prey facsimiles are raised.

Abstract:

Modern semiconductor design methods makes it possible to design increasingly complex system-on-a-chips (SOCs). Testing such SOCs becomes highly expensive due to the rapidly increasing test data volumes with longer test times as a result. Several approaches exist to compress the test stimuli and where hardware is added for decompression. This master’s thesis presents a test data compression method based on a modified facsimile code. An embedded processor on the SOC is used to decompress and apply the data to the cores of the SOC. The use of already existing hardware reduces the need of additional hardware.

Test data may be rearranged in some manners which will affect the compression ratio. Several modifications are discussed and tested. To be realistic a decompressing algorithm has to be able to run on a system with limited resources. With an assembler implementation it is shown that the proposed method can be effectively realized in such environments. Experimental results where the proposed method is applied to benchmark circuits show that the method compares well with similar methods.

A method of including the response vector is also presented. This approach makes it possible to abort a test as soon as an error is discovered, still compressing the data used. To correctly compare the test response with the expected one the data needs to include don’t care bits. The technique uses a mask vector to mark the don’t care bits. The test vector, response vector and mask vector is merged in four different ways to find the most optimal way.

Colombo, Amy. "G.A.M.E.: A Hypermedia Edition of James McNeill Whistler’s The Gentle Art of Making Enemies." VCU Scholars Compass, 2015. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4027.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation, G.A.M.E., refashions James McNeill Whistler’s book, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, into a hypermediated facsimile text and archive. By remediating the text, the socio-historical context of the Victorian time period in which Whistler lived is reestablished, making his book more accessible to twenty-first century audiences. The era studied in this dissertation includes the expansion of the idea of celebrity, the power of the press, and the concept of art for art’s sake from 1863 through 1892. In order to showcase these concepts, archival materials, such as personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, and published pamphlets, from this period were collected, digitized, and organized into a digital archive and edition. In 1890, Whistler, an American-born, British-based artist known for his arguments with the critics of his day, published The Gentle Art, a collection of previously printed letters and pamphlets. Throughout the book, Whistler refers to people, publications, and events relevant to himself and his work. Persons unfamiliar with those references may find themselves frustrated while reading due to the lost social and historical context referred to on the pages, because those references remain difficult to access. G.A.M.E., makes Whistler’s The Gentle Art more accessible by realizing the proto- hypertextual nature of his book. Like many modern-day websites, The Gentle Art contains numerous references to references – a virtual daisy chain of associations Whistler made to and with his work encircling his artistic philosophy, art for art’s sake. From 1890, when the book was published, until now, Whistler’s “links” have remained dormant on the page. G.A.M.E. activates those links and reanimates The Gentle Art via a hypermediated facsimile text for twenty-first century readers. The Gentle Art of Making Enemies is a window into the late Victorian art world. G.A.M.E. houses and archives this contextual material in order to resurrect The Gentle Art and reconcile it with the man who created it.

Cantara, Linda M. "ST. MARY OF EGYPT IN BL MS COTTON OTHO B. X: NEW TEXTUAL EVIDENCE FOR AN OLD ENGLISH SAINT'S LIFE." UKnowledge, 2001. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_theses/276.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholarship of the anonymous Old English prose Life of St. Mary of Egypt ranges from source studies and linguistic analyses to explorations of Anglo-Saxon female sexuality and comparisons to saints' lives translated by the monk Ælfric, but all of these studies have been based on either the text extant in BL MS Cotton Julius E. vii or on W. W. Skeat's edition of the Julius manuscript, Ælfric's Lives of Saints (1881-1900). There is, however, an as yet unedited fragmentary copy of the Old English Mary of Egypt in BL MS Cotton Otho B. x, a manuscript severely damaged by fire in 1731. Digital imaging of damaged manuscripts in concert with ultraviolet fluorescence and other special lighting techniques has been shown to be effective for restoring the legibility of previously inaccessible texts. By means of such digital facsimiles I have transcribed the text of Mary of Egypt in Otho B. x, have collated this text with Skeat's edition, and have discovered that Otho B. x contains textual evidence not found in Julius E. vii. In this thesis, I present my findings and discuss the significance of this new textual evidence for the Old English Life of St. Mary of Egypt.

Abstract:
An historical perspective of Theobald Boehm (1794-1881) and his design of the modem alto flute. Chapters I and II discuss the development of design, playing technique and repertoire of the ancestors of the modem alto flute beginning with the Renaissance consorts detailed in the treatises of Agricola, Praetorius and Mersenne, through the Baroqueflate d'amour and its use in the music of J.S. Bach, to Boehm's alto flute design (c. 1855) and its use in early twentieth-century orchestral and chamber repertoire such as Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps (1911), ending with specific aspects of contemporary alto flute design and manufacture since 1950, including the innovations of Dutch flutemaker Eva Kingma. Chapters III and IV concentrate on Boehm's mechanical and acoustical developments for the concert flute in C, the resulting modem alto flute in G, and his career as a virtuoso flutist, teacher, and composer. Chapter V is a critical commentary on Boehm's arrangement of Beethoven's Largo from the Concerto for Piano, Op. 15, No. 1 for alto flute and piano (c. 1858). Appendices A and B include the facsimile of the unpublished Largo manuscript and a list of Boehm's works for alto flute.

Abstract:

Merfield, C. N. "Predator interactions within a trophic level : Phalangium opilio L. (Arachnida: Opiliones) and mites (Arachnida: Acari)." Diss., Lincoln University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/21.

Full text

Transmission of Document information is the major way of human communication. The G3 standard of fax protocols over PSTN has made fax machine the major tool to interchange imformation across office environment, but the printing of digitized document has caused the confusion of saving or indexing the information. Fax document is less convenient than generic electronic document. Now Computer Network is popular, and electronic documents have evloved from plain text to multimedia information (e.g.Graphics, audio and video). It makes the multimedia document the major medium of network transferable information. Herein, our system adopts the SGML meta language that eatablished by IS0-8879 in 1986, and makes various multimedia documents format as standard as fax protocol, and interchange information smoothly. Again, our system supports a transmission channel between PSTN and Computer Network, and makes the two societies (fax society and Internet society) widely interflowing. The system has the following characteristics: ●The documents have the characteristics of the ability to be formatted, reassembled, indexed, reused and printed. ●Supporting a standardized protocol which is independent with software and hardware. ●An open document interchange environment. ●Supporting the communication environment between the computer users and telephone users. We choose SGML to script document, and implement government document delivery system of ROC. We use WWW Client-Server model to provide user input interface, using the document type of HTML and Chinese LATEX. We improve the Mail-Fax Gateway made by NCU DSLAB, and use it as the open system platform, And finall, we provide a convenient, highly reliable government document making and delivery system.
