Abstract:
This chapter argues that, assuming that law is a kind of artifact (which is a reasonable assumption, when one excludes that it is a natural kind), it is interesting to inquire into the particular features of it. Indeed it is a strange kind of artifact, for it has a set of properties that are quite different from those of everyday artifacts such as tables and chairs. First, law is not a material artifact (as a table) but an intellectual one. Second, it is different from other intellectual artifacts (as poems) because it is normative. Third, it is different from an individual creation because it

Abstract:
The Periodic Table of Elements hasn't always looked like it does now, a well-organized chart arranged by atomic number. In the mid-nineteenth century, chemists were of the belief that the elements should be sorted by atomic weight. However, the weights of many elements were calculated incorrectly, and over time it became clear that not only did the elements need rearranging, but that the periodic table contained many gaps and omissions: there were elements yet to be discovered, and the allure of finding one had scientists rushing to fill in the blanks. Supposed "discoveries" flooded laboratori

Abstract:
The term “element” is typically used in two distinct senses. First it is taken to mean isolated simple substances such as the green gas chlorine or the yellow solid sulphur. In some languages, including English, it is also used to denote an underlying abstract concept that subsumes simple substances but possesses no properties as such. The allotropes and isotopes of carbon, for example, all represent elements in the sense of simple substances. However, the unique position for the element carbon in the periodic table refers to the abstract sense of “element.” The dual definition of elements pro

Abstract The consumption of dairy products, made from the milk of cows, sheep, goats, and buffalo, among other mammalian species, is almost as old as human civilization, with evidence of these products stretching back many millennia. The production of different kinds of dairy products originated as different ways to preserve the valuable nutritional goodness of milk components (lactose, fat, protein, vitamins, and minerals) and make the milk safe for consumption, using basic principles like fermentation, heating, separation, dehydration, acidification, smoking, and salting, which are the keys
