Full textWhen reading a text, the reader construct a situation model. Such a processing is often linked to inferences drawing. The present study examines the role of reading perspectives on the inferential processing, and whether, these inferences can resist to long term decay (one month). The material comprised five expositive texts which had a problem-solution rhetorical structure. Reading perspectives are going to focus the reader on essential elements for the problem resolution, and these elements should be better memorised. These were two different tests : one about content of text information, one about their literal form. Results show that inferences are processed and memorized (valid inferences) ; 1e) there is a good content memorization ; 2e) with a very long terme decay, inferences tend to be confused with literal information. But reading instructions don't play an important role (three possible explanations are proposed). Moreover, a new question appear about the way the information is kept in memory and then restituted. In such a case, types of tests used are particularly important

Full textThe aim of this thesis was to link individual, contextual and communicational factors during a group activity and to study theirs effects on collective performances and workload during collaborative task. Our first study focused on linking workload measurement in a group context and the temporal structure of communication within the group. The aim of the second study was to examine the interaction between context, communication modes, workload and personality on performances. A first analysis of the collected data allowed us to model the interactions between these factors and their effects on performances. The resulting model predicted effects of the communication mode, the context, the workload estimation as well as personality on performances. The second axis of the data analysis aimed to study the relationship between the structure of the participant’s personality and the workload level. Statistical analysis highlighted that those who are categorised as friendly and conscientious personalities, when in a group task context estimated the level of workload weaker in comparison with other. The last axis confirmed the links between the temporal structure of communication and the workload level within a group. Finally, the third study provided a applied component to this basic research by testing the recommendations based on our previous studies. The results indicated that the addition of precise instruction and specific tools to realize the task supported the development of structured operating strategies the participants to develop structured operational strategies improving collective performances

Full textThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of gender on individual, relational, and contextual factors as well as to test a career indecision and school motivation mediation model for college students. A total of 839 Canadian college students participated to this study. A multivariate analysis of variance reveals gender differences on all factors, but not on career indecision. A first model was tested, in which individual, relational, and contextual factors indirectly predict school motivation through career indecision. However, a second model in which individual and relational factors predict directly school motivation is preferred. Results from path analysis show that individual and relational factors are associated to students’ career indecision and to school motivation. Furthermore, students who already chose a specific career were more intrinsically motivated than undecided students, who were more extrinsically motivated and amotivated. Path analysis also indicates a gender difference on career indecision, as opposed to the multivariate analysis of variance. Results are discussed in light of past research.

Full textThis research deals with the discussion of the limitations of road lighting design models to improve road safety. The relationship between driver and road lighting is by means of photometric quantities such a illuminance and luminance, and the visibility level (FZ,), based on the luminance contrast. The VL model use among others, reference data from the psycho-physical sciences, which correspond to a static situation in the laboratory, where the elementary visual stimuli are presented in central vision. The difference between the function of lighting - "a driver detects a target standing on the road" - and data of human behavior used in th model of VL is therefore important. The research's objective was to produce knowledge about the limits lighting design models, that is to say, discuss their ecological validity. The pragmatic objective was to act o road safety through improving road lighting design. To introduce different features of driving and its context in the model of VL, three experiments were designed, one in an on-closed circuit and two others in lab. The results have shown, firstly, the effect of factors from the driving activity and, secondly, the effect environmental factors on target detection in mesopic vision. Thus, the driving activity, which goes beyond the factors taken into account by the model of VL, has an effect on visibility

Full textThe primary aim of this thesis is to first identify and classify entrepreneurial traits so as to distinguish those surveyed on the basis of the perception they have of their entrepreneurial potentialities. Aside from this primary aim, the following work seeks to analyse personal and contextual factors likely to contribute to the acquisition and development of entrepreneurial traits of women entrepreneurs both within Djibouti and Africa at large. We have tried to compare entrepreneurial typologies of those who are entrepreneurs and those who are not. In view of achieving adequately the aims of this thesis, we first establish a synthesis of the main works regarding the paradigms of traits and facts of the entrepreneur so as to better reproduce Gasse’s conceptual model. In the second part of the work, the field work is focused on the exploitation of the findings of a survey conducted among 208 female entrepreneurs and 10 others who were not entrepreneurs. In this survey, a questionnaire, of 125 items excluding identifying factors and based on 17 dimensions distributed among 5 axes (motivations, aptitudes, attitudes, interests and behaviors), was used. Data processing is conducted according to the descriptive statistics techniques (basic sorting and cross sorting) and multi-dimensional ones (correlation analysis, principal component analysis, hierarchal classification, discriminative analysis). The study was strengthened by semi-structured interviews conducted among 10 female entrepreneurs. The results of the analysis confirmed that, unlike non-entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs have more capabilities and entrepreneurial skills. Moreover, results also indicate that entrepreneurial potentialities are mainly linked to the level of education and prior experience among young entrepreneurs and to a host of environmental factors (family circle, circle of friends, religious beliefs, and cultural context) as far as older entrepreneurs are concerned. Therefore, our study tends to show the importance of belonging to a family environment or having a circle of friends with a long-standing entrepreneurial tradition in the process of business creation. The results of these various methods of data processing reinforces the initial conceptual model and open perspectives on ways of assisting Africa’s women entrepreneurship often subjected to contextual burdens

Full textYellow and red light running is an important cause of intersection crashes. These behaviors are more or less deliberate and influenced by different contexts. The aim of this PhD was to study factors involved in the decision making dealing with traffic lights. We examined how car drivers negotiate between safety, respect of the rules, and reducing waiting time. This thesis comprised an introduction followed by two main parts. The first part exposed theories of motivation, decision making, and time and space perception which gave the basis for the empirical research. It ended with a presentation of the problem section. The second part comprised four studies. The first one, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1985), examined the predictors of the intention to run the yellow light. Next studies, carried out on driving simulator, investigated the influence of (study 2) social and personal context on drivers’ behavior at traffic lights, and (study 3) of stopping at lights on the travel time perception as well as the consequences of this perception for drivers’ behavior at traffic lights and for the route choice. The fourth study focused on the use of the numerosity heuristic in the choice between two itineraries depending on the number of traffic lights and the probability of stopping at the lights. For finishing this work, the results obtained were discussed and limits of the studies carried out were commented before drawing a final conclusion

Full textThe aim of this study is an analyze of operators' cognitive skills and characters. They have been identified by their abilities ("expert trades" and "project managers") in the field of the car industry. Indeed, factors are implied in the development of these two types of jobs. In this way, two tests: the "F-JAS, Fleishman Job Analysis Survey, and the "MBTI", Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, were carried to 18 expert trades and 9 project managers. These subjects were also interviewed about their professional activity. On one hand, the conceptual semantics and the F-JAS analysis results underlined significant differences between these two groups, regarding some cognitive skills and context elements. On the other hand, the character field about the MBTI analyse, did not show any dimension linked with the expertise. Then, these results have been refined with data geometric analysis. Some model profiles have been established. Lastly, some recommendations have been proposed for the expert trades' career management. Several training activities were also given; they aim to support the expert trades' professional growth through the transmission of their own specific knowledge and know-how

Full textImplementing health-related interventions is challenging in school settings. Discrepancies, between expected and actual programme outcomes, are often reported. They are, at least partly, due to contextual factors in the setting, the community and the stakeholders involved. The impact of these factors sets two challenges for the development of successful health promotion programmes: first, transferability and generalization, as end effects are in reality difficult to predict; second, the scaling up of interventions cannot be taken for granted, as the determinants involved are numerous and variable, depending on situations. While implementation research is substantial in healthcare or management, it is an emerging and growing field in health promotion. This work proposes to produce knowledge on implementation in health promotion, with a twofold approach based on a theoretical reflection, and its confrontation with three empirical studies. Each study contributes to understand a different aspect of implementation, namely the processes involved, the outputs resulting from the process and the influential factors in play. Findings put forward that specific characteristics of the context, which exist prior to implementation, influence the implementation process greatly, on various levels and according to complex loops of interactions. The new programme introduced sometimes acts as a revealer, a constraint, or a motivator. It is used as a tool, a guideline or a vision, depending on initial conditions, expectations and potentiality of the context of implementation. This work also discusses the way in which school stakeholders tend to “instrumentalize” programmes and guidelines for their own purpose. Questioning the design, status and potentiality of programmes is essential. Rather than proposing a paradigm shift, our suggestion is to move towards implementation research and programme design that focus on interactions between contexts and programmes, to reduce health inequities. It is about moving the cursor from evidence-base and fidelity, to a focus on contextual influencing implementation. Implementation patterns, based on a detailed understanding of contextual factors, could serve as guiding directions to support the implementation process, in a transformational change perspective. More research is needed on combinations of contextual factors in different types of school, and other types of settings, to further develop the approach presented in this work

Full textThe aim of this research is to investigate the process of transfer of intra-organizational knowledge within multinational corporations. Taking into consideration the following three postulates: that organizational knowledge represents a source of competitive advantage for a firm (Barney, 1991; Bartlett and Ghoshal, 1998); that access to a large pool of knowledge disseminated across the world and the transfer of this knowledge across the organization constitutes la raison d’être of MNC (Gupta and Govindarajan, 2000); and that internal organizational mechanisms are more efficient than the market (Williamson, 1987) for the transfer of this knowledge between organizational units, for the purpose of this study we were particularly interested in the factors that can affect the effectiveness of this process of transfers. Having identified in past research various theoretical approaches to study this phenomena, we proposed and tested the integrative theoretical model helping to analyse the impact of contextual factors on each of the following three stages of the process of transfer: the determination of knowledge to be transferred, the selection of mechanisms of knowledge transfer and finally, the evaluation of the effectiveness of transfer. Our research confronts two theoretical perspectives currently dominating the field of knowledge transfer in multinational corporations. The strategic approach and the resource-based view of the firm emphasize the importance of internal organizational factors for the effectiveness of any organizational action (Bartlett and Ghoshal, 1998; Barney, 1991). On the other hand, the institutional approach considers rather that organizational choices and actions are conditioned by the external environment (Ferner, 1997; Kostova, 1999; Scott, 1991). The results of our research show that in spite of the existence of institutional and cultural constraints, the effectiveness of the entire process of transfer of knowledge related to HRM is determined by internal organizational conditions, such as the involvement of top management, the role of RH function and the alignment between corporative strategy, HR strategy and the organizational culture. Our methodological approach is based on a qualitative case-study of three multinational companies (two Canadian and one French) working in metallurgical and telecommunications sectors. Our empirical data stems from seventeen semi-structured interviews conducted with the top HR managers of these companies, who are actively involved in the process of knowledge transfer at HQ or at its subsidiaries in Canada, France, Germany and Switzerland. We also used a large amount of publicly available information from these companies.

Full textContext and goals. This study proposes an ecological framework model for understanding school violence. The goals of this research are to; 1) assess the effect of individual, contextual and environmental factors on the risk of victimization, 2) verify the existence of interaction between the different factors. Methods. The pupils of 16 elementary schools from the great Montreal metropolitan participated in a self-reported survey pertaining to different aspects of violence at school. Firstly, descriptive analyses were conducted to portray school violence. Secondly, a general hierarchal linear model was used to estimate the effects of individual, contextual and environmental variables on the risk of victimization. Results. The results of multi-level analyses show that individual, contextual and environmental variables have an effect on the probabilities of being victim of verbal, physical or online violence. Thus, the more delinquent students are also those who report more prior cases of victimization. These results are not entirely attributable to individual characteristics, however. The risk of victimization is lessened when “guardians” interfere in order to put an end to the conflict, as well as when victims defend themselves. Finally, the risk of victimization is lower in schools with a greater number of students. Interpretation. The results suggest that many aspects unrelated to victims and delinquents make it easier to comprehend the process of victimization at school. The role of guardians as well as the size of schools are important elements to the etiology of violent behaviour.
Obartel, Patricia. "Usage de la force policière au Québec : une analyse des facteurs individuels, situationnels et contextuels." Thèse, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/11889.
Full textIn Quebec, the officer has the authority to enforce various laws and to maintain order. Since the police officer may be faced with a multiplicity of problems, he is, in certain circumstances, forced to use physical force to protect himself or to protect any person against death or serious injury. However, although the phenomenon of police force raises a good number of criticism and it is widely publicized, only a few studies have connected individual, situationnal and contextual factor to police use of force practices. The purpose of this thesis is to examine and to understand the phenomenon of police use of force in Quebec by identifying individual, situational and contextual factors on levels of police force. The data for the current study are derived from three primary sources : the incident reports of use of force of a Canadian police force for a period covering the years 2007 to 2011, 2006 Canadian Census and Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR). The use of multilevel models reveals that several factors have an impact on the level of police use of force. Individual and situationnal findings suggest that police are more likely to use higher level of force when they encounter males, citizens who physically resist and citizens who possess or display a weapon. Contextual findings indicate that the proportion of racial heterogeneity and concentrated disadvantage have an impact on levels of police force. Findings lead us to conclude that the nature of the immediate situation (individual and situational factors) is one of the most prominent explanations for police decision making, but police behavior can also be accounted for by variation in demographic and institutional characteristic of communities. However, further studies are needed to verify the consistency of our results.

Full textThe purpose of the present study was to compare the care model of one Montreal local territory to the stepped-care model and to investigate factors influencing the implementation of this model. A qualitative case-study approach was employed involving 13 semi-structured interviews with services providers and managers from primary and specialist mental healthcare. Results showed that the hierarchical care model in place in this territory is compared in several points with the stepped-care model. However, some elements of these models have to be integrated to improve efficiency and quality of care, including the introduction of objective evaluation criteria and the specification of evidence-based interventions. Furthermore, some factors influenced the implementation of this hierarchical care model. Thus, the presence of collaborative working and learning strategies were identified to be a key condition. However, some elements must be considered to facilitate its success like the standardization of the referral criteria and process, the clarification of the mental health guichet d’accès (centralized access point) roles and the general practitioners' adherence to the care model. In conclusion, the use of the reference and analysis frames of this study may guide managers on issues to be considered to support the implementation of an evidence-based care model which may facilitate mental healthcare efficiency and its adequacy with the population needs.
