"Factive verbs are traditionally said to induce weak island effects, banning the extraction of adjuncts, but not that of arguments, out of their post-verbal clause. However, many studies in the literature (Karttunen 1971, Hooper & Thompson 1973, Djarv 2019) show that not all factive verbs are alike and distinguish between emotive factives (true factives) and cognitive factives (semi-factives). These two sub-classes evince different syntactic behaviour, cognitive factives being seen as more permissive. With such verbs, event adjunct extraction is reported to be allowed, in some cases (Djarv

There is however disagreement in the literature about the types of factive environments in which any is found. This paper proposes the first systematic large-scale survey of the use of any with factive predicates. The purpose of this thesis is to present an argument against the factivity of knowledge and in doing so develop a non-factive approach to the analysis of knowledge. The argument against factivity presented here rests largely on empirical evidence, especially extant research into visuomotor noise, which suggests that the beliefs that guide everyday motor action are not strictly true. This framework is prominent in manual sketches and is especially important in small-scale depictions viewed obliquely from above. The role which the occluding contour, or Factual Silhouette, plays in structuring the sketch becomes increasingly minimal as more of the terrain becomes visible, as the viewpoint is raised. Drawing upon the work of Bruno Latour, this dissertation defends the thesis that the law is a factish: an indivisible blend of social and natural reality. The dissertation develops, in Latour's terms, a "non-modern" framework from which it draws, in turn, the philosophical foundations for a theory of factish law. This framework is presented as a paradoxical model of understanding, which situates the law within a broader understanding of reality. The model allows for several distinctions of modern analytical philosophy to be breached, without succumbing to a post-modern paralysis of thought. Ap
