Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is threefold: first, to analyse the current state of the literature on the relationship between quality management (QM) and productivity as a performance indicator; second, to identify the key constructs of QM practices related to productivity; and, finally, to reveal whether QM can actually be regarded as a determinant of productivity.Design/methodology/approachThis research was carried out through a systematic literature review, considering 150 papers that studied this relationship between 1997 and 2017 and another 37 papers on the internal determinants of productivity.FindingsThe findings revealed that human resource management, top management and process management were the more relevant constructs of QM practices related to productivity. In addition, 89 per cent of the internal determinants of productivity were related to the proposed constructs of QM practices, which suggest that QM is a determinant factor of productivity.Originality/valueThis review analysed the literature on the relationship between QM and productivity, as few studies have done before, generating original, interesting and useful findings that can guide future research and that also represent a useful tool for researchers, practitioners, managers and policy makers.

Abstract:
Reverse migration in Malaysia is a relatively new emerging phenomenon where the migrants have intentionally chosen to return to their hometown for better living. Thus, there is a demand to investigate the determinants that lead to these changing population mobility trends in Malaysia. This study adopts the systematic literature review to identify the determinant factors of reverse migration. The aim is to analyse empirical studies to determine factors in reverse migration. Consequently, the findings have revealed several determinants: following family, career, environment, economic reason, quality of life, and social aspect as the driving factors towards achieving subsistence living. Indonesia is an emerging country which will be develop to industrial country. This paper examines the main implications about foreign bank presence on the Indonesia’s economy. We find that the Foreign Bank Presence has negative effect on Indonesia’s Economy. The determinant factor of foreign bank presence is Foreign Number and Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) can be used to confirm determinant factors of Foreign Bank Presence but Foreign Shares cannot be used to confirm determinant factors of Foreign Bank Presence. While, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Inflation Rate can be used to confirm determinant factors of Indonesia’s Economy. But direct effect of foreign number on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is positive effect, and direct effect of capital adequacy ratio on inflation rate is negative effect.

Abstract:
The main purpose of the research is to evaluate determinant factors which contribute to companies being delisted from Stock Exchange Market in Indonesia. The samples are taken from the delisted companies list in IDX for a period year 2007-2011. The matching companies are then selected based on the company size to make an equivalent comparison for each delisted companies sample. The total final samples consist of 58 companies, 29 delisted companies and 29 matching companies. This research analyzes the company’s financial status by using descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, and logistic regression model to find the effect of each determinant to the probability of delisting. The shares liquidity is a significant determinant to company’s delisting in Indonesia. Meanwhile, profitability and leverage seems to be determinant factors for delisted, but appear to be insignificant. Other examined factors, market capitalization and growth opportunity appear to insignificant determinants. This manager implication of this research is that the strong delisting factor is the external company factor, in this case, the market factor.

Abstract:
Total factor productivity growth has played a significant role in uplifting the economic development process of nations in recent years. This paper uses the recently published data of Penn World Table (PWT, 9) for six emerging economies (China, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan) to establish a relationship between the growth of total factor productivity and its various determinants. Panel data econometric techniques are employed and the data utilized were spanning from 1955 to 2012. We found that growth of real GDP and human capital are positively and significantly related with the growth of total factor productivity. Similarly physical capital stock is although positively impacted the growth of total factor productivity but however this relationship is not significant statistically. Lastly, an inverse and significant relationship is observed between employment level and total factor productivity growth for the selected emerging economies. The study concludes that relatively richer and highly educated economies have improved their productivity while employment level has adversely affected the growth of TFP. The results of the study imply that economies should focus on income and human capital increasing policies and further to translate the benefits the focus should be on efficiency of labor rather increasing the employment level.

Abstract:
<p>Prompted by increased competition, universities around Sweden are beginning to recognize that marketing and branding are strategic key components. This recognition is of great importance for Umeå School of Business (USBE) given that it is often perceived as both geographically and psychologically distant for many prospective students. A committed brand management initiative by the management of USBE could therefore serve to strengthen the school’s competitive ability and increase its brand equity in the long run, making it more attractive to prospective students.</p><p>In order to create a foundation for this work, this study sets out to answer; what are the relevant brand equity dimensions of a business school, and what is the general perception(s) of them with regards to USBE? The study is limited to prospective and present students making it possible to interpret these relevant brand equity dimensions as determinant factors of school choice given that it is the most obvious use prospective students will make of them.</p><p>In the study, existing brand equity theories are used to construct a conceptual brand equity framework applicable to a business school’s brand and organization. A quantitative survey is then performed to collect empirical data from over 450 students at nine Swedish universities including USBE.</p><p>After performing a series of factor analyses on the empirical data, the study shows that the relevant brand equity dimensions for prospective business students are awareness and loyalty in addition to associations in the form of the Outcome & Prestige of the education, its Versatility, Performance, and Expertise as well as its ability to instigate Assurance.</p><p>The study also indicates that there are considerable differences between the general perception(s) of these dimensions with regards to USBE between USBE’s present students and prospective students – implying that strategic actions are necessary to correct for this. Toward the end of the study, the author therefore provides the management of USBE with brief suggestions of how these actions could be undertaken.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
Many factors have been studied in relation to this association, but a mechanism advanced by Tarlov (1996) concerning dissonance between expectations and reality has not been investigated. Moreover, few studies have examined in depth social and psychosocial factors influencing health, with the participation of people living in poverty and social exclusion. objectives and methodology: This study aims to identify and describe the factors harming the health of low-income adults; the strategies and actions used by low-income adults, which are linked to these factors; and the effects on the participants of participation in the study. This study used a participatory research approach and a problem-posing method based on Freire’s pedagogy. The participants were eight low-income adults using food bank services provided by a community organization in an urban setting. They participated in eight group meetings, which included activities such as presentation of representative stories or images and role-playing. They also participated in the data analysis, during five additional meetings. Results and conclusions: This study identifies a new psychosocial factor, namely, the dissonance between current perceived circumstances and one’s ideal of circumstances conceived early in life. This dissonance generates profound malaise and follows a loss or a failure to achieve the ideal of circumstances. Other factors identified support those from previous studies and are grouped into two themes: lack of love and support from an early age, and current circumstances as a trap. This study also identifies an important and under-reported outcome of participation, which is the experience of personal discoveries or a better understanding of the self in the world. A participatory research approach combined with a problem-posing method based on Freire’s pedagogy enables personal discoveries and might be a means for accompanying people with profound malaise. Actions, interventions, and policies should enable people to achieve their ideal of circumstances and to respond to children’s needs for love and support.

Abstract:
Background South Africa has experienced the most severe consequences of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Every community has been affected in some way, many experiencing huge increases in mortality, particularly before antiretroviral therapies (ART) were readily available. However, the micro-level understanding of the HIV epidemic in South Africa is weak, because of a lack of detailed data for most of the population. This thesis is based on detailed individual follow-up in the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS) located in the Agincourt subdistrict of Mpumalanga Province and investigates micro-level determinants of HIV epidemiology and the impact of treatment provided. Methods The Agincourt HDSS has followed a geographically defined population since 1992,approximately the time when the HIV/AIDS epidemic first became apparent. This population based surveillance has included capturing details of all deaths, with cause of death determined by verbal autopsy, as well as the geographical location of individual households within the overall Agincourt area. Background information on the roll-out of ART over time was also recorded. Results A comparison immediately before and after the major roll-out of ART showed a substantial decrease in HIV-related mortality, greater in some local communities within the area than others. Individual determinants associated with a decreased risk of HIV/AIDS mortality included proximity to ART services, as well as being female, younger, and in higher socioeconomic and educational strata. There was a decrease in the use of traditional healthcare sources and an increase in the use of biomedical healthcare amongst those dying of HIV/AIDS between periods before and after the roll-out of ART. Conclusions Understanding micro-level determinants of HIV/AIDS infection and mortality was very important in terms of characterising the overall epidemic in this community. This approach will enable public health interventions to be more effectively targeted towards those who need them most in the continuing evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Abstract:
Os restantes indicadores (oportunidades de crescimento, rentabilidade e tangibilidade dos activos) considerados na análise mostraram-se determinantes na estrutura de capitais das empresas em análise; ABSTRACT: One of the most contentious issues in the theory of finance has been the theory of capital structure. In recent years, a number of theories have been proposed to explain the variation in debt ratio across firms. The theories suggest that firms select their capital structure depending on attributes that determine the various costs and benefits associated with debt and equity financing. Modigliani and Miller (1958) showed that capital structure decisions do not affect firm value when capital markets are perfect and when corporate and personal taxes do not exist. The purpose of this research was to examine, for some of the Portuguese and Spanish SMEs, the relevance and validity of several factors considered in the literature as determinants of capital structure of firms: size, growth opportunities, tangibility of assets, profitability and profit rate. To achieve these objectives it was developed a descriptive, quantitative and explanatory study. It was used a multiple linear regression with panel data for the period 2005 to 2008, using the variables mentioned above as the dependent variable and the capital structure, based on data collected in the financial documents through the System of Iberian Balance Analysis (SABI). The results show that the SMEs in both countries exhibit similarities in their capital structure choices. Profit rate is not statistically significant for both countries. Size is statistically significant only for Portugal. The remaining factors (growth opportunities, profitability and tangibility of assets) included in the analysis were determinants in the capital structure of companies under study.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter provides an overview of the working environment as determinant of retirement (section “Working Conditions as Determinants of Retirement”) and its role as mediator of the health effects of retirement (section “The Health Effect of Retirement”).In the first Section on “Working Conditions as Determinants of Retirement”, we summarize studies showing that having a good job is an important aspect of individuals’ retirement decisions. Mostly positive working conditions appear to contribute to individuals’ later retirement, but adverse working conditions not necessarily relate to earlier retirement. Moreover, adverse conditions can be buffered when combined with high job control, job resources or social support. In the Section on “The Health Effect of Retirement”, we focus on how retirement affects health in both theoretical and applied studies, suggesting that the inconclusiveness illustrated in theories is also evident in empirical work. Previous studies, however, vary largely regarding the adopted (1) health outcomes, (2) study designs, (3) definition of retirement and (4) the type of work performed before retirement. These four factors could explain the inconsistencies of the results. We finally focus on the latter factor, showing that the effect of retirement on health tends to be positive for workers retiring from low quality or more demanding jobs. Our chapter concludes with policy advices regarding how to promote longer and healthy working lives and a discussion of relevant groups to pay attention to.

Abstract:
AbstractEquity, fairness, and justice are related concepts widely discussed in several areas of study but remain an open field in terms of spatial justice and support decision systems application. Uneven spatial development have shown a tendency to amplify social inequalities alongside territories. To better understand the spatial configuration and spatial distribution of resources for different social groups, multiple objective criteria can be used to formulate optimal resource allocation. This work discusses spatial justice by utilitarianism and Rawlsian difference principle perspectives to formulate two models based on facility location problem (FLP) framework. Assuming the proximity to a desired opportunity (service or resource) as a measure of wellbeing and satisfaction, we weight the distances to the nearest facility by a social factor based on exponential function. Optimization results tend to favor outliers for weighted FLP, while the regular distances FLP formulation tend to favor heavy urban areas. We found that results are heavy context based, as the distribution of social groups are determinant in optimization process.

Abstract:
Abstract The chloride concentration in concrete required to compromise reinforcing steel passivity and initiate active corrosion, [Cl−]th, is an important service life determinant for reinforced concrete structures. However, consensus regarding a value for [Cl−]th is lacking, as evidenced by the fact that reported experimental determinations vary by more than an order of magnitude. A recently recognized factor that contributes to the range in [Cl−]th is the obstruction to Cl− migration posed by reinforcement, such that ingress of this species must be treated as two-rather than one-dimensional. In the present research, reinforced concrete slabs were exposed to outdoor conditions while cyclically ponded with a NaCl solution. Subsequent to corrosion initiation, selected slabs were cored, dissected, and [Cl−] determined both from the cores and from shallow millings of concrete immediate to the reinforcement. It is demonstrated that, in addition to the reinforcement obstruction effect, the spatial distribution of coarse aggregates immediate to the reinforcement influences Cl− distribution and the measured value for this parameter upon such sampling. The results are discussed within the context of understanding factors that effect measured values for [Cl−] and the relatively wide variation in [Cl−]th that has been reported in the literature.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper identifies the problems with large multi-year painting projects and discusses the benefit to Facility Owners and Contractors for breaking a large bridge project into smaller phases. It will also discuss factors that determine the optimum size, large or small, of a painting project and their impacts. The size of a project will be analyzed from the standpoint of money, time, insurance, bonding, manpower, inspection, management, bridge inventory and job quality. All of these factors are important and must be addressed during the design of any project. When both the Facility Owner and Contractor have a better understanding of the issues, he or she can then determine how large or small a project should be. It should be noted that the information presented in this paper is not based upon empirical data from any specific project(s). The purpose of this paper is to identify the challenges facing both Contractors and Facility Owners when selecting the size of a specific project.

Abstract:
In today's dynamically developing global security environment, it is necessary to increasingly strengthen the state‘s soft power tools, build its reputation, be attractive to its surroundings, partners, and at the same time influence others so that even a small state can enforce its policy and achieve its goals. Building the soft power of the state is a very complex process, which is not always based only on positive variables and of which the human factor is an essential part. The aim of this article is to process a theoretical study on the issue of analyzing the roles of the human factor not only as an instrument of the state‘s soft power, but above all as its source.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective. The purpose was to review available evidence of risk factors associated with maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States during the prenatal and postpartum periods to inform a National Institutes of Health Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Identifying Risks and Interventions to Optimize Postpartum Health, held November 29–December 1, 2022. Data sources. We searched MEDLINE®, CINAHL®, and the Social Sciences Citation Index through November 2022. Review methods. We searched for observational studies examining exposures related to social and structural determinants of health and at least one health or healthcare-related outcome for pregnant and birthing people. We extracted basic study information and grouped studies by social and structural determinants of health domains and maternal outcomes. We prioritized studies according to study design and rigor of analytic approaches to address selection bias based on the ROBINS-E. We summarize all included studies and provide additional descriptions of direction of association between potential risk exposures and outcomes. Results. We identified 8,378 unique references, with 118 included studies reporting social and structural determinants of health associated with maternal health outcomes. Studies covered risk factors broadly, including identity and discrimination, socioeconomic, violence, trauma, psychological stress, structural/institutional, rural/urban, environment, comorbidities, hospital, and healthcare use factors. However, the risk factors we identified represent only a subset of potential social and structural determinants of interest. We found an unexpectedly large volume of research on violence and trauma relative to other potential exposures of interest for pregnant people. Outcome domains included maternal mortality, severe maternal morbidity, hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, cardio/metabolic disorders, weathering (the physiological effect of premature aging caused by chronic stressful experiences), depression, other mental health or substance use disorders, and cost/healthcare use outcomes. Depression/other mental health outcomes represented a large proportion of medical outcomes captured. Risk of bias was high, and rarely did studies report the excess risk attributable to a specific exposure. Conclusions. Identifying risk factors pregnant and birthing people face is vitally important. Limited depth and quality of available research within each social and structural determinant of health impeded our ability to outline specific pathways, including risk factor interdependence. While more recently published literature showed a trend toward increased rigor, future research can emphasize techniques that estimate the causal impacts of risk factors. Improved reporting in studies, along with organized and curated catalogues of maternal health exposures and their presumed mechanisms, would make it easier to examine exposures in the future. In the longer term, the field could be advanced by datasets designed to more fully capture the data required to robustly examine racism and other social and structural determinants of health, in combination with their intersections and feedback loops with other biologic/medical risk factors.

Prusky, Dov, and Jeffrey Rollins. Modulation of pathogenicity of postharvest pathogens by environmental pH. United States Department of Agriculture, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2006.7587237.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Until recently, environmental pH was not considered a factor in determining pathogen compatibility. Our hypothesis was that the environmental pH at the infection site, which is dynamically controlled by activities of both the host and the pathogen, regulates the expression of genes necessary for disease development in Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. This form of regulation ensures that genes are expressed at optimal conditions for their encoded activities.Pectate lyase encoded by pelB, has been demonstrated to play a key role in virulence of C. gloeosporioides in avocado fruit. Polyglacturonase synergism with oxalic acid production is considered to be an essential pathogenicity determinant in the interactions of S. sclerotiorum with its numerous hosts. A common regulatory feature of these virulence and pathogenicity factors is their dependence upon environmental pH conditions within the host niche to create optimal conditions for expression and secretion. In this proposal we have examined, 1) the mechanisms employed by these fungi to establish a suitable pH environment, 2) the molecular levels at which genes and gene products are regulated in response to environmental pH, and 3) the molecular basis and functional importance of pH-responsive gene regulation during pathogenicity. The specific objectives of the proposal were: 1. Characterize the mechanism of local pH modulation and the effect of ambient pH on the expression and secretion of virulence factors. 2. Provide evidence that a conserved molecular pathway for pH-responsive gene expression exists in C. gloeosporioides by cloning a pacC gene homologue. 3. Determine the role of pacC in pathogenicity by gene disruption and activating mutations. Major conclusions 1. We determined the importance of nitrogen source and external pH in the secretion of the virulence factor pectate lyase with respect to the ambient pH transcriptional regulator pacC. It was concluded that nitrogen source availability and ambient pH are two independent signals for the transcriptional regulation of genes required for the disease process of C. gloeosporioides and possibly of other pathogens. 2. We also determined that availability of ammonia regulate independently the alkalinization process and pelB expression, pecate lyase secretion and virulence of C. gloeosporioides. 3. Gene disruption of pacC reduced virulence of C. gloeosporioides however did not reduced fully pelB expression. It was concluded that pelB expression is regulated by several factors including pH, nitrogen and carbon sources. 4. Gene disruption of pacC reduced virulence of S. slcerotiourum Creation of a dominant activating

Full text
Abstract:
This is one of the first studies in Sweden testing the notion of racial color-blindness empirically in a Swedish context, by asking a sample of Swedish participants to assign race to images of faces with different phenotypes, rate how ‘Swedish’ the faces are perceived (referred to the degree of ‘Swedishness’) and identify the skin color of the faces (through the NIS skincolor scale). We also use eye-tracking to explore whether participants look differently at faces of different racial groups. The results show that skin-color is a decisive factor in the racial ascription as Black, while skin color is not determinant of the degree of Swedishness. What determines the degree of Swedishness is the racial assignment itself, in other words, how individuals perceive and categorize phenotypes into different racial groups. We conclude that Swedes are not truly racially color-blind and race does indeed matter in Sweden.

Abstract:
According to recent research, external factors and political governance considerations are key determinants of capital flows in Latin America. We postulate that corporate governance is a crucial determinant as well. We show that while the region is characterized by relatively low levels of corporate governance it shows highly volatile capital flows. The high level of economic volatility that characterizes the region is partly due to the behavior of capital flows which, in turn, are influenced by external factors. The paper shows that by implementing better corporate governance the region could reduce the sensitivity of capital flows to external shocks and hence reduce the volatility of its economy.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is part of the project "Explaining Economic Growth Performance" launched by the Global Development Network (GDN). The purpose of this project is to explain economic growth performances across seven regions of the world. This paper provides a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the main factors behind Chilean growth: the main characteristics that made economic performance so average through the 1960s, so sensitive to the two major international crises in the early 1970s and early 1980s, and so simulative to growth rates and dampening to volatility from the mid-1980s onward. The first section looks at the history for the period under analysis. The next section uses a growth accounting exercise to approximate Total Factor Productivity (TFP). The results from that exercise are then used to conduct a multivariate time series analysis that includes several measures of economic distortions to assess which are important determinants (or consequences) of Chile's economic performance. Features found to be relevant are then incorporated into a model that attempts to quantify the growth effects of several shocks. Finally, the last section summarizes the main analytic conclusions and draws policy implications.

Full text
