The analysis and the numerical simulations described in this Thesis allow to better understand the confinement properties of toroidally confined plasmas dedicated to the research on controlled thermonuclear fusion. Two important configurations have been investigated: the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) and the Tokamak. In the former we have focused our attention on advanced regimes recently discovered, named Quasi Single Helicity (QSH). The magnetic topology and the particle transport have been studied in these states both in the experiments RFX-mod (Padua, Italy) and MST (Madison,WI,USA). A new

Abstract:
The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system (CNS), and as an immune-privileged site, it requires special immune surveillance and regulation. The complement system is a component of innate immunity produced locally in the CNS, since size restrictions from the blood brain barrier prevent complement proteins from easily passing through from the rest of the body. The complement pathway contributes to inflammatory cell recruitment, cell lysis, and opsonization, and thus requires regulation to avoid inappropriate activation. Despite its important role in innate immunity, very little

Most of the concrete buttress dams in Sweden were built from the 1950s till the1980s based on the traditional method of analyses. Those structures are reinforced and heavy in structure. Their height to thickness ratio being large makes them prone to crack during their lifespan. The presence of these cracks make the reinforcements used in the buttress dam susceptible to corrosion due to the water entering through the cracked areas. Therefore, studying the effect of cracks and corrosion regarding the safety of dams is important and should be carried out before the dams fail to function. However,

Abstract:
The application of geosynthetic reinforcements in civil/geotechnical engineering projects (retaining walls, foundations, pavements, dams, slopes, etc.) has gained much popularity during the past few decades due to several benefits, including cost-effectiveness, environmentally friendly and sustainability. A detailed literature review as presented in this thesis has indicated that when a slope is reinforced with the geosynthetic layer(s), it improves the overall stability of the slope with or without loaded footing on the slope crest. However, studies on the performance of strip footings embedd

Abstract:
This research has three parts. Part 1: The Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Street provides 5 methods of superelevation (e) distribution. Many states use methods 2 and 5 for low speed, urban and rural high-speed facilities. Method 5 aims to address speed variations; but is complicated, computationally intractable and may violate design consistency. Design recommendation by NCHRP439 accounts for speed variation, tractable; but is cumbersome along with irregular/step-wise design curves. New reliability based e distribution method is developed that addresses the speed variation; which
